w00t, low-enders thread in LYN! thumbup.gif

Alrite, since it's empty here...let discuss stuff.

What kind of tone you like? How do u set it?

For me, i'm more into modern tone...i set my bass to full bass and treble but i cut my mid (with the mid boost switch on). At amps, depend on what amp i use, i usually dial it to flat (all EQ at 0). Mid-swepping tone is quite popular among bassist anyway so my tone not really unique hehehe~

My friend shared this tip which shape my setting above. He said that u carry your tone on your bass so you shouldn't depend on the EQ at amps since for most of us, we don't carry our own amps to gigs/shows. So, we should shape out tone mainly from the bass itself.

QUOTE(techmax @ Jun 8 2005, 01:26 AM)
just want to ask ... compare bass to rhythm and lead guitar, bass is easier ?
and if want to learn bass from zero, where should we start 1st ? do the bassist need to know those chords like power, full chords for the rhythm ?
*
QUOTE(modD @ Jun 8 2005, 09:29 AM)
for a TOTAL beginner, knowing the root notes is enough i think. no scaling needed. of course, that's for a total newbie lah.
*
As starters, bass is easier than guitar since bass u usually play note by note compared to guitar. But as musicians, u need to know scaling and chords knowledge since it's the basic. I suggest u learn scaling and chords but dun emphasis on it. Main job of bassist is to lay down the groove and keep it going while locking with the drummer, which keeping the tempo. Then comes all those fancy2 thing like slap & pop, tapping, harmonics yada yada

But really, i dun know scaling, modes, whatsoever (my music theory sux d00d, can't remember shiznik!) at all too...i just play root notes all the time hahaha. Knowing your fretboard is the best way thumbup.gif

Just my two cents...from 2 years of bass-ing it out laugh.gif

QUOTE(Pix @ Jun 8 2005, 09:42 AM)
you roll off the mid on your bass, AND activate the mid-boost ? Can you explain what is the mid boost actually ?

And big thanks for bassists who roll of their mids, so the guitarist has clear frequencies to play on wink.gif
*
I guess it's easier to explain with this picture

user posted image
This is Bartolini MK2 EQ...(1)bass (2)mid (3)treble (4)volume (5)slapswitch
The slapswitch actually will boost the mid...coz slap tone usually have a high amount of mid and then if i turn it off, the mid sounded too weak. So i would actually dial the mid at 0 (can go lower to cut it) and let the slapwitch on.

Hahaha...i'll not letting guitarist go easy...give 'em a low B rattle nyaahahah laugh.gif

ok... but i guess the mid boost affects also your sound when you're not slapping. Unless you switch it on only when you play slap ?
I'd like to try !
*
yah, i use it all the time. Coz if not, the mid will be too weak or muddy for me.
Want to try? No problem...where is your whereabouts?

monny : if this complicated, then check Fender Stu Hamm Signature bass --> http://www.fender.com/products/search.php?partno=0191500886 ...with the J/P/J pickup config, a variety of tone waiting for ya! and that's more complicated than my single humbucker config hehehe~

chapree, i'd like to organize a jam session actually !
in 2 months I'm leaving malaysia, i'd like to do something before that..
i'm in KL/PJ.

so let's say you just add the mids using your mid-knob... + mid boost off... what's the difference with mid-knob rolled off + mid boost on ?
*
I'm in Shah Alam/Putrajaya...no far then smile.gif
I'm bad at impromptu jam since my incompetency of music knowledge but i would love to come to watch ur jam man thumbup.gif

Hmm...how to answer this...the tone is a bit different. Checkout the mp3 i posted.
Constant setting are bass and treble which both are dialled to full
midfullboost0 = Full mid, mid boost off
mid0boost1= Flat mid, midboost on

Midfullboost0 tone is more treblish...something like an active P-Bass with tone dialled up to full. Mid0boost1 tone have muddy mid, when u play some muted notes it sound kinda nice hehehe...

If i put mid full and boost on, can get Sting Ray tone wink.gif

By the way, both clip are recorded direct to mic port with Sound Recorder. Built-in laptop sound card anyway...so plz bear with the quality tongue.gif

Guess where the bass riff come from wink.gif

i'll learn that on my next bass
targetting a yamaha RBX774 maybe....

im a guitarist...but im rather attracted towards bass sounds that sound...rather stringy..as in played with a pick. my bassist too. we like mark hoppus's sound...mike dirnt's...that trebly springy sound...along with a deep grumbling low end. not so nasal i suppose....

Hahaha...give some try ler...limp bizkit have some nice bassline and sound. Re-arranged is definately one of them.

Eh dude, share your bass tone with us ler...

yeeah ! samples ! Cool !

I like both sounds actually... the mid0boost1 for rock, the midfullboost0 for funk and slap'ya'mama !

why didn't you plug in thru your bass Vamp ?
*
Coz my bass v-amp is not around (gonna get it today)...and it's better direct from the bass itself. The real tone hehehe...
I think i got like 4 or 3 more samples all about cutting/full mid while boost0/1...i glad u ask that question since it make me record the tones for easier references thumbup.gif

QUOTE(jc133 @ Jun 9 2005, 02:11 PM)
Hi - another bassist reporting in. Look forward to learn from some of u sifus.

Can everyone do an intro pls. Start with mine.

Been playing for a couple of years, mostly church duty. Bias to modern jazz, blues, funk and R&B.

Rig -
Curbow 5 w barto mk2 pickup & eq
Washburn XB 4 stringer
Yamaha RBX775 (sold to another lowyatter - twistail where are u?)
Ampeg B2 combo
No effects box !!

how did u record ur sample basslines?

For me, slightly better in play than my previous rbx775. Great tone range but but less woody sounding than the Yamy. Were you able to dial up the Jaco sound?

The rbx is cool while it lasted. Ampeg is very good, but am eyeing swr drool.gif
*
Yo jc133, welcome! Yup, we are using the same bass! Good to know another user...where did u obtain yours? And what color?
Ampeg liao...ampeg notworthy.gif Have u tried other ampeg? I think i use B2 before at a show, but the one that totally impressed me is Portabass. 1000w in puny head, and played through 4x10, stabs through ur soul! laugh.gif
Since u eyeing a SWR, would u let go ur Ampeg? tongue.gif

I record that sample, just by plugging it into mic port through a big jack to small jack converter (i'm on laptop using built-in sound card). Adjust the mic volume, that's it...

Curbow...hmmm, i like the design and the weight. It's so light compared with other bass. The neck is fast and awesome. The bart's also...considering i got it at 1.6k, it's quite a deal. As for tone, i like the modern tone it produce and the slap tone especially. So juicy. Jaco sound, well that's quite hard. He's on fretless with a roundwound strings...quite hard to reproduce it on fretted. I never tried extensively anyway...but nothing is impossible.

Oh btw, some more intro from me... I played for two and half years already i think, more into modern rock but i like standard tuning more than the usual down tuning.

QUOTE(Pix @ Jun 9 2005, 03:00 PM)
just bouncing about the "improvisation" game... you, all the bass heads guys, would you like to do some improvisations stuff too ? If I record some funky or jazzy track with one guitar and drums as a backtrack, who would be interested to participate ?
*
Well, it's a good thing but i really doubt i'm up to the job...i try my best smile.gif Hope u can provide notes or tabs for the guitar and some info for the drums. Hope it won't hassle u much smile.gif

QUOTE(kardock @ Jun 9 2005, 06:24 PM)
man, i started the thread but now i'm lost ! hehe actually didn't have time to post any. well, as for my opinion (eventho this may be off topic coz i don't know the main topic here!) bassist usually very low-profile. and some people said that bassist are the people who fail to play guitar. so they turned to bass. whatever it is, bassist kick-a$$ !!

my 'weapon' :
Ibanez SRX500
Ibanez SoundWave 20W
D'Addario Bright Sound strings

i like my sound to be 'fat' and very low metal noise. still learning very hard to fully use my fingers. sorry but, who is nikki sixx ? my bad, as i'm new to the bass world. hope to learn more from u guys.

is it true that billy sheehan couldn't read score and don't even knew the chord ? he play by heart.

*
Nikki Sixx is from Motley Crue...he's on Gibson Thunderbird IV but he got his own Gibson signature bass too --> http://www.gibson.com/products/gibson/Bass...kisixxbass.html

Hehehe, i can't play guitar for nuts man and pple keep on telling me it's the same thing... blush.gif

Fat sounding, no wonder u got urself am SRX. How u lower down the metal noise since u have twin hot humbuckers?

Dunno about the billy sheehan but i read/heard about it somewhere...

Sorry for being a recording idiot -  but how do you convert wav to midi and edit in a Pc mixer software? Or is the format supposed to remain wav and mix with other tracks (eg drums, gits etc) which may be in midi format from the software/soundcard font library? And then remix and output result in midi / mp3?

Not referring to fretless. Its more his classic fretted fender J sound which is simply awesome for 16 notes funk. Can dial this with my Yammy but cant seem to get a close version from the Curbow, which I believe must be due to the luthite body. Other than that, I love the curbow much. Agree, lovely neck action.
*
Maybe Pix could clarify on the recording question...i'm kinda blur hehehe~

I dunno about his fretted J since his famous tone coming from the fretless J. I believe it's the pickup & maybe the body too. J is single coils while the curbow is on humbucker.

errmm... this may sound stupid. but, usually what kind of practice u (all the bassist) do ah ? i mean, try to play songs ? do some scaling practice ? or maybe fingering practice ? as for me, i usually just make a random bassline to activate my fingers. my little finger still cannot be as strong as my middle finger. ehehe. :

QUOTE(MoNnY @ Jun 13 2005, 06:47 AM)
i warm up with a bit of chromatics.. helps in the strecthing too..
then i play along to songs i learned...
of course it ranges from easy songs to harder ones la..
start easy and slowly progress to faster songs..
practicing for next gig anyway...
hehe
*
Mine is not much diff...i do chromatics till 12th fret and then i play the first part of classical thumb by victor wooten (he thumb it with speed & precision but i can only play the lines at 1/4 the speed and sounded so lousy hahaha). It helps the fingering and speed. My tiny finger oso not strong as the other 3 fingers...somemore so lazy to use hahaha~

QUOTE(Pix @ Jun 13 2005, 04:21 PM)
i tried to create a backtrack for you guys, with guitar + drums, but it's pretty rough... still need to practise about it. I'm thinking doing a "pop" song, REM / U2 style, with nice chords on which the bass should bring a "poppy" melody.

will take some time though... wink.gif
