Thanks smile.gif I bought it 2nd hand for RM1.6k around year 2003. The bass is very un-traditional. It's very light due to it's luthite body and have a very nice modern tone. The electronics and pickups are Bartolini's (it came standard)...so for the price I got, quite a deal that time. Somemore, when SLC Uptown were still around, they selling it for RM 2.8-3.0k!
Nowadays, I dunno if it's still available...i heard at Swee Lee Singapore there it's RM 1.6k brand new.

Skincut? LOL...there's a long story behind it tongue.gif

yes, played them many times. but no money buy for whole set like above. and the prices here are way more expensive (i guess) than in kl. one small splash over rm900. how to afford like that. but as i said, this is a practice room (and the first few pics are in my bedroom) so wouldnt need such good cymbals at the moment. usually do shows with the set provided(and add someof our stuff). cant afford to pay a drum tech to carry and set up this drum set here and there. haha.

i'm using the md-2, bandmate is using the ds-1.
i will not say that i bought all those equipment as i didnt. it all belongs to the band thats why we kept it in that room. its sortof like our band's property as we all contributed some gear. our drummer has his own set at home too.

edit: i dont mind knowing how to mod a ds-1 too. can mod that ds-1 for him if he wants

Fell and sound like fender or squier, but the PU is very poor ... ( I got a plan to upgrade the PU hmm ... )

btw
I bought it in Japan, not in the music store but in the electronic store (weird isnt it?)
you can cheat audience if u were on stage, add some song or music with the cassete ... (plugged into amp)
but again the PickUp is poor sad.gif

yalor, i notice other than pix fender amp, the rest of us are using really puny amplification.

but hey my gibby special plays nice on the small vox amp, this is not a gibby with hot humbuckers for all those menacing power chords, gone are my days of heavy metal sound together with my gibby classic, my ada mp1, and marshall cab (aggh im having seller remorse)

btw pix got all my gears back when i was in the States, except for the vox amp which i got recently from a local store.

edit: oh i made a mistake it is supposed to be Pix's Peavey Classic tube amplifier

i will not say that i bought all those equipment as i didnt. it all belongs to the band thats why we kept it in that room. its sortof like our band's property as we all contributed some gear. our drummer has his own set at home too.

edit: i dont mind knowing how to mod a ds-1 too. can mod that ds-1 for him if he wants

massive ?.. i remember he wanted to upgrade his current amp... eventhough it sounds good (he makes good use of it !), it's still a peavy blazer.. unless he bought a new one already ?
*
I have a peavey bandit, and most of the recorded stuff is done direct with my GT-6. also, i can believe i havent told you guys yet. I did buy a new amp, a marshall 1974x CLONE, head version. its a non master volume tube amp, so you have to crank it up to full to get distortion. I also bought a THD hotplate, so that i could crank it up all the way, then bring down the volume with the hotplate, so you can get that cranked amp powertube distortion at normal volumes. then i boosted the signal somemore with my gt-6. what can i say, it was everything i expected it to be. fjooking awesome. HOWEVER, since then, ive already blown my output transformer twice. Its expected when you play your tube amp full tilt all the time.
so basically, i think im done with this tube amp thing. it sounds really great, i mean, its the real thing, but maintenance and reliability are a real issue if you play it like that.

Next amp im going to get (in the faaar future of course), are probably one of those modelling amps. As it is, they sound damn near close to the real thing, and will only get better, and also, none of my digital or solid state stuff has ever died on me

go to www.ceriatone.com
you can get the address there, its in bandar seri damansara.
clone as in its an exact replica of the real thing. Ceriatone more known internationally than it is here.
Now, i want to stress, the output transformer blowing is NOT due to any defect in the amp, its due to me playing it at full volume all the way, but he told me he can put in an even more heavy duty one for me. This guys work is quality stuff, and he knows his shit. point to point wiring, the whole works. buy hey, dont just settle for the marshall 1974x, he does plexi's, jtm45's, vintage fenders, matchless etc as well

clone as in built to the exact same specs, not fake coz the dont stick a marshall label on it. quite a number of companies make clone 1974x and other vintage marshalls as well, but most of them sell for just slightly under the price of a real marshall 1974x. Ceriatone sells his for ONE FIFTH the price of a real marshall 1974x. In fact, if you knew how to build amps, you could make one yourself too, coz the schematic is readily available on the net, just to to schematicheaven

ok, based on japanese prices, a new 1974x list costs 10,900 ringgit, roughly, but they sell it for about 8700. the real marshall 1974x comes only in combo version. Ceriatone sells it in both a combo format (only the head) where it will fit in a combo (eg, if you want to replace the amplifier of you 1974x) or also in a head format. I bought mine in the head format, for just over 1900, or is it just under 2000. why i chose 1974x, coz it uses el-84 tubes, which are supposed to give you a more 'metal' kind of distortion, like the el-34s.

..unlike, you mean?

el34 are said to be more chunky, to crunch faster.. el84, I forgot.. but according to what you say, it's colder --> better for metal.

el 84s are supposed to be similar to el 34, but lower powered.

18 watt

I have no personal experience with tube amps before this, so i got it based on info on the web. I read about the metal thing from a review about jtm45 at harmony central, where one knowledgeble user said that modding the jtm45 with el34s makes it more suitable to produce that 'metal' kind of distortion. but i think this is very subjective and should have said so earlier

What's the difference between KT88, 6550, EL34, 6L6, EL84 tube types?

In order to keep the subject matter concise and relevant to VHT amplifier models, we'll break these tube types down into 3 basic categories:

High power output: KT88, KT90, 6550

Although not widely used in the guitar amp industry, we find them to be ideally suited to players who want power punch and articulation. They are used in a variety of configurations, mostly in pairs and quartets and in some cases, sextets. They are capable of delivering 100 watts per pair and this is the typical application in which they are applied at VHT in the Two/Ninety/Two and Twenty One Fifty power amps. Quartets of 6550's are used in the Pittbull Ultra-Lead and are more conservatively operated at about 60 watts per pair. Because of the high output capability and efficiency of these tubes, amplifiers that use them exhibit a wide dynamic range, lots of low end power, crisp attack and to quote Guitar Player Magazine "miles of headroom".

Medium power output: EL34, 6L6

These are the standard bearers of the majority of the tube guitar amp industry for the last 30 years or so. Typical output for a pair is 50 watts. We use EL34's in the Twenty One Hundred power amp, Two/Fifty/Two power amp, Hundred CLX head, Hundred/CL head, Fifty/CL head, Fifty/ST head and Fifty/Twelve combo. EL34's are harmonically rich sounding tubes with a strong upper midrange which complements guitar voicing very nicely. When driven hard they exhibit a smooth transition into distortion while maintaining clarity and good tone quality. All VHT amps that use EL34's can be switched over to 6L6 operation. 6L6's generally sound a little cleaner than EL34's and tend to have a bit more beef in the low end as well as more bite on the top. Some players prefer the extra clarity and punch of these tubes. Others just like them because they are used to the 6L6 sound. We will ship any of the above models with 6L6's installed by special request. However, we prefer the sound of EL34's in our amps and these are what the above models are shipped with as standard equipment.

Low power output: EL84

This great sounding and economical tube, has had quite resurgence in popularity in recent years due to its increased availability. Typically used in quartets and run in Class A mode, they are good for about 30 watts or 40 to 45 watts in Class A/B. They basically sound like a small screaming EL34 with a rich fat midrange voice and great distortion tone. We use this tube in the Pittbull Forty-Five series heads and combos.

I agree that the list prices are the same about the same everywhere, but each shop can in turn give its own discount, and I every shop we investigated in Japan ALWAYS sells below the list, especially with gibson, fender and ibanez, unlike bentley, which sell them at the list price, and are cocky on top of that. A typical example will be:

MARSHALL 1974X GITAR AMPRIFRIER

ORIGINAL PRICE 10,900
OUR SUPER DISCOUNT PRICE 8,700 (8,500 without tax)

wow a real tube amp! and its a marshall clone, congrats man. The only close thing i had was the ADA MP1, which i already sold, its a 110V version, using a voltage transformer, i always get zapped when playing!
U must be one lucky dude who gets to crank your amp. Me, when i play a little loud on my 15watter, my 5 yrs old already start complaining. Now i remember why i stopped playing guitar 5 years ago.
oh i hav a confession to make, i just got my very first fender stratocaster (viva mexico!), a used one, but really excellent condition, coz the singaporean dude who sold it to me like have so many guitars.

cranking it's not working out. I called Nik up and he told me its probably due to my THD Hotplate, so that means, no more attenuation, so no more cranking cry.gif (unless I'm willing to accept hearing loss)
Buts its not so bad, the amp still sounds great pedals, its very pedal-friendly

no lah, hot plate was 1 k+, and the marshall clone was only 1.9 k plus. I have J-customs but i didnt pay j-custom prices biggrin.gif . Now, it seems that my amp has blown twice already coz I play it a full volume all the time, then go and boost the signal somemore, the THD Hotplate allows me to do this without going deaf. So, either I be prepared to replace the output transformer every so often or give up playing at full throttle all the time, and just use the amp as a power amp, get the disto from my gt6 (which sounds good through that amp too)

Not really, but lets put it this way, my Hotplate gave my amp an OPPORTUNITY to blow. With my Hotplate, I could play my amp at full blast for up to 5 hours/day (thats the most I play in a day), everyday, and thats all ive been doing since i came back from sabah. I think, if you play any amp like that, especially tube amps where the voltage inside the tubes can reach 500 to 600 volts, at full blast for hours per day everyday, its bound to blow

I wanted to buy it from JM guitars in Singapore, and since i was running out of time, I wanted it fast. So, the next day, when i didnt get any reply, i bought if new off ebay for USD 264.95. The next day, this guy from JM guitars emailed me but it was too late, i had already confirmed on ebay. Price from JM guitars in Singapore was about the same as ebay, and this guy deals with THD products. He also had the one i wanted, the 8 Ohm one (Hotplates come in 2 Ohms, 2.7, 4, 8 and 16 Ohm models, which is a big point against it, compared to other attenuators like the weber mass and minimass).

So, if youre looking for an 8 Ohm Hotplate, buy it from Singapore, coz he has one in stock. If youre looking for other models, buy it from some reputable ebay store then.
Oh ya, shipment, I payed USD 32 somthing for shipment. It reached here in 4 days time from Oregon, but it took 10 days for the poslaju people to tell me that it had arrived (fjookers) . I had to go to the Pos Malaysia building at Mas Kargo, to pay tax and collect. I almost got screwed there too, coz they thought it was some kind of amp, and wanted to charge me 25 % tax, but i managed to convince them that it was a guitar accessory, so i only got charged 10% tax

to me this particular thread is not about flashing gears to brag about - i think all agree having the greatest guitar and gears does not make u a better musician musically technically etc, more often the other way around - but the right gears really helps when u gig around often, am i right?

but rather this thread provides an avenue for us to ask and discuss about particular products from members who actually owns one, like hey that is a nice stompbox u got there, how does it sounds , how is the sound of that replacement pu blablabla.

also shows our members appetite in guitar playing, metal, blues, or zakk wylde! hahahaha

so guys don't be shy, post ur gears so we all can discuss bout em.

kimi > notice, i put some wub.gif in front of the "not usual" and quite "desirable" guitars/effects/amp.

really good gear doesn't make you play better, but it makes you sound better at least biggrin.gif IMO this thread is to discuss the gear as you said , but also know what ppl are using to record themselves. So when we hear them, we know what's that sound. And next thing, I'll ask them to put their address, so we know where to steal it biggrin.gif

wouldnt want it to evolve into a discussion
since we've got our own sub forum... it would be much better to just open another new thread to discuss about gear etc

never was good in explaining things in words but i guess this will answer your question

http://www.zzounds.com/item--ROGADRENALINNII

bought it on-line about 2 years ago. the built in drum machine sounds very good though. very 'punchy'. the synth also is not bad either. received very good rating in GW. for jazz, rock and mayyyyybeee heavy metal player will do just fine. but for those who are on the extreme side (satan worshipper, etc) it just doesn't cut in.

it's quite a beast of an amp.
actually, it would even scare the beast out of an other amp. Come to think of it, it would even make the beast kicks the a$$ of the other amp and move all its stuff to that amp, with rage.

huh.gif

I believe I heard it in hong kong last time, and was fjookingly impressed, but I was to busy trying all the guitars there to pay attention to it so much.

yeah..lots of the extra string, hehe...i normally dun do lots of leads, basically i jst do bits of here n there n lots of heavy riffs..my other guitarist does the lead thingy...n sometimes i dun even play the guitar n i'll stick with my drumming..my minor instrument is the guitar and major in drums..

i prefer using the RG7620...cause the pickup really sounds great..i only used the other one when i'm not doing much of melody n more on riff..

i haven't explore all of those amp yet especially the conford and diezels. i just got it like two months ago. don't think the lower end line6 have all of it. if you happened to have PODxt Live, you can d/load bogner from line6 site. you have to pay of course but not sure how much. PODxt i don't know. PODxt owner please advise...

you can download a "metal amp" pack for few hundreds RM on line 6, to add on top of the current Pod's modelized amps.
the default amps are OK, but it's not metal enough... the metal pack will remedy to that. you can check which amp are in the pack in line6 website.

most of my things i got it locally with the exeption of my Adrenalinn II.
speaking of which, there'll be a demo on this thing on 2 July at Acoustic Shack. admission is free and Jose Thomas will do the demo part.

thx beastmasta... (is different a "good" thing by the way ? laugh.gif )

i should come back on the forum more permanently around september/october, but i won't be in malaysia anymore. it doesn't really matter whether i'm in kl or not anyway, what matters is that we still all play guitar and try to be as active and constructive on this forum as we can. and that blacktrix will still intensely like to become a ass hair of zakk wilde wink.gif

I'm damn happy with my Les Paul....... I just want to add another one to the collection....Thinking of either a Dime Razorback or a Jackson/ESP Flying V with a tremolo bar......

But decided to save up for a better amp..... currently aiming for the Marshall Mode4..... Very versatile and very powerful.

I tested the Mode4 in Singapore......
very LOUD..... and yes.... the OD-1 mode does sound like the JCM800 with abit more bite.

I heard that they added in an Overdrive module into the OD-1 loop..... So THAT combined with my ZW-44........ You can probably hear it from Sarawak.

blacktrix how are you going to move those Mode 4 stacks around ? I know you can just bring the Mode 4 head but the speakers how ? I just hope those speakers won't fall on you. Then we have to bury you inside u're Coffin Case laugh.gif

Why not get something abit smaller (and cheaper) which u can carry around

for great tones (and extra loud pings!), getting a halfstack is worth the trouble carrying it around. look at me, my gears arent that good but still i carry my pedalboard case in 1 hand, guitar hardcase inanother and my vamp pro rack(and all other stuff like cables and adapter) inmy backpack. i look more like some guy moving house but once the jamming session starts its all good. biggrin.gif

i would be getting that amp too just that i dont have money. cost of living for me has also goneup alot thanks to not having a car here and eating out every meal. uni life away from home

Probably from the bastards at Bentleys, because they are the only ones bringing it in..... But that's still a loooooong time more. I only saved up about 1800 at the moment....... Still working the odd jobs now and then..... but Uni has been a killer these past few weeks.

And yes, I wouldn't mind a portable amp, but common...... 300W!!!! That thing can scream man.
don't forget.... I drive a Toyota Hilux pick-up truck.... I have lots of room in the back to carry the amp......
But most likely...... won't be playing any gigs anytime soon unless we all form a band......

So yeah...... Mode4 is still on top of my list.

I've a Modulus Guitar G2T with a GIM neck. The carbon graphite core broke at the heel and I just have to say that wood is still the best material for a guitar. The guy at GIM built me a nice neck but the finish wasn't good =/

sweat.gif sweat.gif let see where to start...

Line 6 clean
they grafted the preamp and tone stack of a Roland JC-120 'jazz chorus' solid state combo onto the power amp and transormer of a classic Marshall JTM-45 tube head.

Line 6 super clean*
more sparkley and clean compared to line 6 clean. duh...

Line 6 super sparkle
its voiced in the clean/low gain realm where everything usually sounds too clinical or too dark (pls don't ask me about this)

Line 6 mood*
based on grunge guitar tones

Line 6 crunch
from Marshall JTM-45's pre amp and tone stack they ran it into the power amp and transformer of Fender's '58 tweed bassman. great grind and nice punch.

Line 6 spinal puppet*
based from the best stock and modded Marshalls in the world.

Line 6 insane
they ran Boogie dual rectifier as a preamp for triple rectifier.

Line 6 purge*
hot-rodded Marshall JMP-1.

Line 6 smash
tight bottom end and serious mid range void.

Line 6 big bottom*
crossed Boogie triple rectifier with Rivera Los Lobottom subrig. super wide midrange control.

Line 6 octone
they created Octave Distortion preamp for a class A poweramp.

Line 6 agro*
reminiscent of class A Vox sound.

Line 6 treadplate
modeled after 1994 Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier Tremoverb. tight, high gain similar to Dream Theatre or Metallica sound.

Peavey 5150 Mk II*
this is EVH preferred amp.

Jazz clean
based on Roland JC-120

Class A-30 TB*
based on 1967 Vox AC-30 Top Boost

Blackface Lux
based on 1964 Fender Deluxe Reverb

Fender 1961 Tweed Champ*

Double Verb
based on 1965 Fender Twin Reverb

Tweed B-man*
based on 1958 Fender Tweed Bassman

Plexi Lead 100
based on "jumped" 1968 Marshall Super Lead

Plexi 45*
based on 1965 Marshall JTM-45

Brit J-800
based on 1987 Marshall JCM800

Brit J-2000*
based on Marshall JCM2000

Connor 50
based on Cornford mk50h

Brit Silver*
based on 1985 Marshall Silver Jubilee

Treadplate
based on 2001 Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier

Diamond Plate*
based on 2001 Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifier

Bomber Uber
based on Bogner Uberschall. this amp is UBERRRRR!!! thumbup.gif thumbup.gif

Bomber X-TC*
based on Bogner Extacy

Deity Lead
based on Diezel VH4

Deity's Son*
based on Diezel Herbert

p/s- all * are alternate setting as all setting comes in pair. u can see 16 kind of amp dials but it is actually 32 kind of amps altogether

to tell u the truth, i had a faintest recollection of the real JCM800 my self... and i'm talking ages ago...
but the one that Line 6 engineers emulate rocks!!!
the tone controls are placed after the preamp tubes thus giving it a more tone-sculpting effect at high gain settings. the JCM that they modeled basically uses a tube for distortion sound....

Sorry dude, that's all I've got....The amp in the 2nd pic is the Line 6 Spider II 30. Bought at CK Musik Jalan Imbi...By far, the best shop I've ever been...Tested both Vox AD30VT and the Spider...Both are pretty darn good amp but I've picked the latter coz of the noise gate and the insane distortion...I would love to add more guitars and amp to my collection but me wife would most probably whack me with the Nighthawk to bring back me senses... biggrin.gif ...My next project will be the PRS McCarty plus a Mesa Boogie Heartbreaker....If I'm lucky, that may be realised 10 years down the road.... laugh.gif

Forgot to quote that I have zero effect pedal....My setup:

finger (30 years of good old joints) -> string (Gibson .010) -> pickup (Gibson M series) -> Cable (RM20 cable - similar to iron/kettle cable) -> Line 6 Spider II 30 (with built in efx) -> Celestion 12 inch (Warning, may induce unnatural earthquake)...

biggrin.gif It plays great! One of the most versatile guitars ever! Some people told me that the clean is really sweet sounding. Very suitable for pop stuff that I play. I'm selling it soon to a friend though cry.gif He dug the movie Crossroads to much hehe tongue.gif . I'm getting an SX Tele which I'm gonna convert to Johnny Greenwood's (Radiohead) Tele i.e. instead of a single bridge pickup, I'm gonna change it to a humbucker!!! drool.gif

I tried it this afternoon and it sounds great too. a bit more crunchier than the Squire. perrrfectt...

will do man.. Thanx foe the support hehe.. But I'm trying to get my guy to order a bigger bridge that will fit the humbuckers when I get them, So it will be somethin like a fat Tele. It will still have that overall Tele look I PWOMISH!

Mexican Tele.. yeahh man.. y'know what I almost got the Highway 1 Telecaster at bentley. It was going for about 3K without hardcase. But I really wanted an archtop so opted for the Sheraton instead (1 week to go!!! can't wait thumbup.gif ) Then I heard about SX Teles which are also quite good, and may be more subjective to 'Operations' hehe

Hello Nick,

What I've got is the Line 6 Spider II. I've tested both this and the AD 30 VT but found the Line 6 to be much more to my liking. I tested both at CK Musik at Jln Imbi. Commendable customer service and good discount too. I've got about 17% discount for my amp from the stated price. Not bad. Just go there and try the stuff.

They are very helpful and will let you test without the "Wanna buy or not ?!? No buy, no need to test la..." look... biggrin.gif

Most cables are similar... as long as they have low capacitance and good shielding you're alright
yea planet waves are good cables
dont get the gold plated cables.... wont make much of a difference and its less durable

Fast smooth neck and warm bluesy sound- worth the extra money. The tone is better than a LP I think-at least my Epi LP, and the sustain goes on forever (ngggggnggggggggg...) The shop owner said that if I have some money I should upgrade to a Gibson 57 pu. Anybody got any idea how much they would cost?

yanspe / evo , i'd like to try the ProCo cables, because they say the improvement is huge (at least as much as their price, I believe laugh.gif ). Planet Cables are, IMO, the "basic" cables if you have a sexy setup already : they provide a solid improvement on little details. Details that you really wouldn't notice if you didn't try these cables in the first place I agree... biggrin.gif Dynamism and Clarity... two factors that are impossible to look for because it's so subtle. Yet, once you heard them, you want them !

the cube and the vox ad series are the best practice SS amps in the market right now
im sure many would agree with me on this matter...

btw just completed my guitar....
tone zone/blue velvet/ air norton with push pull coil splitting... might install a mini switch for series/parallel
also did a full shielding .... its so much better right now.... no hum at all even at high gain for single coils

visit www.guitarnuts.com
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! thumbup.gif

The Cube & Vox are not SS ampslar, they're digital-modeling amps. Though, I'm sure they beat most (if not every) SS practice amps in the market.

I came across this site 2 days ago when searching for info on shielding. Very comprehensive site!!! thumbup.gif thumbup.gif thumbup.gif Thanks for sharing anyway!

pups sound great.... i had the air norton/blue velvet for a while now... but just got the tone zone last week
tone zone is juz..... SEXX
with dist.... chord riffs are clear and you can almost hear every chord note ring... ACDC all the way man
when coil tapped the air norton is incredible.... i wont say it sound exactly the same a strat on neck pos but its close... higher output
i also had a friend of mine to reverse the polarity of the blue velvet pickup... nice cleans on pos 2 and 4
giving me more GAS for a fender strat tongue.gif

got them for around 80USD for pups and 60 for the BV...
now all i gotta do is laern to play... lol

series is normal la..... maximum output.... standard humbucker wiring
parallel has got less output, more treble..... very very nice for cleans..... chords sound incredibly clear
hum-canceling is when 2 single coil pups cancel each other out to eliminate that 60cycle hum or something... like position 2/4 on the strats.... not the vintage ones thou

XCude... i'm not (yet) into acoustic guitars... but they look good !

Nerd, i'm not sure you can say the Valvestate is a tube amp... it sounds more like a solid-state, and it's build like a solid state with few tubes to make it prettier (it's mostly a marketing tactic)... I owned a valvestate 8080, that's the same family.

The fender is gorgeous... never heard of that model, but it sure looks like an ear-drum killer.

not that i dont like it. they are not bad. just that i like my weeping demon sound(from what i customize) and the auto footswitch wah feature is a must have. my playing style uses lots of heavy riffs and in between licks or one octave 'chords'(powerchords without the perfect 5th) so thats where the autofootswitch wah feature comes in. smooth transition.

its a 'portable' gear so i cant really carry an amp around coz i travel so much here(and i dont drive here too so using public transport). i come down to kelana jaya quite often too as i stay with my uncle sometimes. plus i dont want my neighbours in my hostel to know how much gear i have. so headphones for the timebeing.

QUOTE

thats all ive got here in kl (except my zoom pedal and the 'wooden pedalboard' which is not in the pic).

QUOTE

yes i really miss a nice amp. since ive been to kl i've only played through an amp only a few times during gigs. marshall jcm900 and good ol roland jc120.

QUOTE

its a mic tubepreamp, and yes, at this stage its modelling all the way since i am using headphones. it sounds modelled after the guitar amps, but lacks that special warmth and to add some sparkle back it goes through the tube preamp. guitar tube preamps wont work as theyll colour the sound(which i leave it to the amp modeller to do that). mic preamp is more suitable for this job. actually, mic and PA stuff are recommended to be used after modelling compared to guitar gear.

that's very interesting ! could you treat us with 2 audio clips:
1 with the modelisation straight to the PC
1 with the same modelisation ( & same riff ) ==> pre amp ==> PC

I'm really curious to hear the difference... as soon as you have a bit of time, of course. Do you think you could do it ?

Ok.... more info on the Junior:

On his 23rd Birthday, Ozzy gave Zakk a '57 Les Paul Jr. like the one Leslie West played. To quote Zakk from Guitar One, Holiday 2004 Issue:
"Ozzy would always say, 'Zakk, you gotta play one of these things. In Sabbath, when we went out with Mountain, he had the thickest guitar tone,' You know, the old man doesn't know shit about the fiddles, but as far as he was concerned, Leslie West used one, and he kicked ass, so that's what he got me - and that was that".

user posted image

I think the Les Paul Jr you're talking about is the one on the right.

Extra bit of trivia: It's also the same model that Billie Joe of Green Day now uses

And about the special, are you sure it was a Special? Because from what I know, Zakk uses mostly Customs.... there are a few Gibson Standards and SGs, but no Specials.

Listing down a few guitarswhich I think you might be mistaken for:

His VERY FIRST Les Paul Custom which was given to him by his Parents (Paid half actually) for his graduation was a cream colored one. This is waaaaaay before the Infamous "Grail" Bullseye guitar.

user posted image

This is the first Gibson that Zakk Purchased when he joined Ozzy, a Les Paul Deluxe Gold Top. But he quickly disposed of it because he hated the tone.

user posted image

From what I know (And Believe me..... I know ALOT), Zakk never owned a Les Paul Special. Soap Bar Pick ups arn't his thing and the closest thing to a Special is the Les Paul Jr. that he owned.

Sorry to dissapoint you man....

Blacktrix.. man I saw it in last year March issue of Guitar Player. The one with Zakk on the cover... Maybe they got it wrong(could be his guitar tech's guitar... but it's listed in Zakk's rig) ??

Wooh.. I love tht cream LP custom. They don't make cream finish anymore, do they?

Here's more info on the "Mystery Guitar"

QUOTE
For guitars, I used my Les Pauls and a Gibson SG. The Les Paul with the bullseye is an '81. I used the SG when we did the Ozzmosis sessions, I think that's a '95. I also have a Les Paul Classic that has a Fernandes Sustainer pickup in the neck and I used that for some of the solos and intros on some of the songs, like "The Rose Petalled Garden." Then I have an old Danelectro I use to overdub some clean parts. I bought that in New York City on 48th Street. I think I paid around $800 for it, although it probably only cost $20 to make. But there's nothing that sounds like it.

I checked back that old issue of Guitar Player (after all, I do have MOST of the magazines with Zakk on the cover) and he uses a Gibson Custom Shop '57 Les Paul TV reissue (With one-piece P-90s). Yes, it looks ALOT like your Special, but Zakk's is a reissue of a classic guitar. The TV is actually the shade of Yellow which Gibson called "TV Yellow".

Here are the specs for the Special (1955):
1955 Les Paul Special introduction specs: mahogany single cutaway slab body, 2 soapbar P-90 pickup with black covers, stud tailpiece/bridge combo with the string looping over the bridge, dot fingerboard inlays, 24.75" scale, bound neck, pearl logo, "Les Paul Special" silkscreened on peghead in gold, 3 layer black pickguard, nickel plated parts, beige "TV" finish.

And here are the specs for the TV reissue:
Solid mahogany body, One-piece mahogany neck, 22 fret rosewood fingerboard, Pearloid dot inlays, Early '50s rounded neck profile, 24-3/4" scale; 1-11/16" nut width, P-90 single coil pickup, One volume, one tone controls, Nickel hardware, Lightweight aluminum tailpiece, Vintage button tuners.

From what I can tell, Gibson Custom probably modified it to a 2 piece pick-up system with 2 tone/2 volume dials.

Hope that will clear things up now!!!!

*EDIT*
I've been checking back between Zakk's Reissue and your Special, I noticed that yours is using a 2 piece stop-bar while Zakk uses a single stop bar.

Guitars
2003 Ibanez RG450LTD with Evolution bridge
SX strat with Hotrails bridge

Amps
Behringer GX108 Firebird
Peavey 5150 combo

Effects
Behringer V-Amp 2
BOSS OD3

This is a rather perculiar RG as it came with the top of the line Edge Pro bridge which was unheard of in previous RG4xx incarnation since the early 90s (early 90s RG4xx came with Edge). This model is only available in 2003 to 2004.

The original V8 bridge kinda suck so I replaced it with a used but barely use Dimarzio Evolution that my friend was selling. It's only RM200 including installation so I thought what the heck, even if I don't like it I can probably sell it for a higher price (new ones cost around rm380). It's a great pickup, perfect for the 80s sound.

The SX is one of those earlier models with the correct Fender pre-CBS era headstock. This one even has a foto flame top. This is my first guitar that I bought myself. I also replaced the bridge single coil with a Seymour Duncan Hotrails, a single coil size humbucker. I actually wanted a JBjr but Bentley didn't have any at the time and this dude recommends me the Hotrails. Great recommendation. It sounds great and it is perfect for the modern Iron Maiden sound (think Brave New World).

I bought the Behringer Firebird to replace my kinda crappy Rebel 30 watt amp. I was first attracted to the looks. Tested it and brought it home that day. It's great for the classic sounds of the 60s and 70s. And it is very loud for a SS 15 watt. It's a great amp for times when I can't use the 5150. (namely middle of the night)

I bought the 5150 combo from Keng of Awakening Studios and Furniture. I had my eye on it for months when he first posted it for sale. Since the amp was selling for such a good price and I don't have the money that time, I had to forget about it thinking that it will be snatch up fast.

Fast forward a few months later and I got some money to spend. On a whim, I check his ad and whoila, it's still for sale. I bought it on that day itself. It's a back breaker, it's loud and my parents are threatening to throw me out of the house but man, it's worth it. Once you play a tube amp, you will never go back to SS. The 5150 is a metal monster and for rock, you can't go wrong with it. Thankfully I didn't go with those Marshall DSL and TSL series. I tested the combos and thought they suck and they sound nothing like a Marshall to me.

Keng still have one he might want to sell. I telling you guys, go get it man, it's the best rock amp for the money.

I bought the V-Amp 2 mainly for recording and it is a great recording tool. It is an amazing practice and recording tool for the price and I heard you can get it for less than RM600 nowadays. It sounds and feels suprisingly like a real amp too. You need good quality headphones to get the best out of it though.

Since I was gigging again, I went around shopping for a pedal that can give me an overdrive and decent rock tones (GN'R, Aerosmith) and the BOSS OD3 delivers. I first tested the Bluesdriver. It sounds muddy and the gain was farty. I then tested the SD1, it's too thin and too little gain. The I tested the OD3 and I knew it's the pedal I want. Sadly it is also the most expensive of the three (RM340++). I didn't get it on that day. But I did get it a month later when Bentley have this sales for rm270++. Used it for a few gigs and it has always sounded great. And this pedal eats suprisingly little batteries unlike the Metal Zone. It is probably BOSS best pedal.

Pics of my guitar

Pics of amps and effects will be uploaded soon.

Get all tube man, it's worth it. Once you play all tube, you will never go back to SS. MF4 has lots of features but that's it. And if features is what you want, I say Line 6 is a better choice.

noisetrigger, i totally agree with you : a tube amp is another world ! Yet, the 5150 is set really cold (google JJ tubes, or eurotubes), and doesn't fully give a tube experience I believe. You might consider enhancing it wink.gif The DSL401 was a pretty poor amp, yet it's a tube amp... And the Mode 4 has some good reviews... basically, I must admit some SS amp are worth it. It's not a tube sound, but it's warm and alive enough to make it gooood (i'm thinking about the H&K Blues Edition actually, never tried the mode four before).

blacktrix > we used to have a really funny TV ad about a soda. A small actor was playing the human incarnation of the soda, he was a total useless and mean devil, threatening young kids and innocent women for no reason. And at the end of the ads, the victims used to ask, hopelessly, "Why on earth is he such a bada$$ ???"
And he answers : "BECAAAUUUUUUSEEEE !!!!"

Well... OBVIOUSLY my amp of choice would be the JCM800 (especially if it has the BLS seal of approval), but getting one in KL isn't as easy as it seams. The Mode4 is alreayd ready for sale at Bentley and is has roughly a similar sound to the JCM800.... and it isn't a pure solid state amp..... it uses a tube pre-amp as well.

blacktrix... using preamp valves is not really useful. Don't get me wrong : it's useful if you're intending to sell this amp, cuz it's a great marketing point.
But sound-wise, I never tried any marshall hybrid amp that do sound warmer than any another SS amp. It doesn't mean it sounds bad ! Just that it won't sound better just because of this feature.

I hope you're living in a bunker.. 350W might make a blast big enough to destroy a small kampung laugh.gif yummy !!!

led zep > you're technically wrong about this... i'll let you find out why wink.gif com'on, don't let btrix's neighbours buy a useless device !

evo.com > i dunno really know about this. from what I understood from amp technicians, 350W allows a SS amp to have a clean channel that keeps being clear and the disto channel that keeps being tight and sharp at loud levels. It seems that those 350W means that the "usable" watt range is big enough to have nice definition/clarity at loud levels. That "usable" range may not actually exceed 50W, or 100W (or whatever, i don't know the exact value). Yet the amp can go beyond, but the sound will degrade.

Whereas the wattage of a tube amp gives its actual usable range !

I may be wrong, cuz' it's just what I understood from my readings.

Well.... We'll see if I'm lucky enough to save up for a Mode4 or the JCM800.

I might settle for a Valvestate AVT50H if funds are REALLY low.... Now that I'm going Florida and thinking of bringing back the Epi ZW

The Mode 4 has an attenuator??? Or is it because it's a SS amp? Or is it because Blacktrix simply won't use it? tongue.gif

oh cmon.... its the amp that really matters thumbup.gif

i dont think an attenuator would be useful for an SS amp.....simply because it doesnt work the same as tube amps... SS amps sound best at low/mid volumes whereas tube amps get their peak tone from pushing the tubes harder ie MAX VOLUMEEEEEE
so it would be very unwise to go max on a SS amp and then turn the volume down with the hotplate

pix> yea i guess so.... until they make better diodes/transistors, SS amps will always be remain as the inferior kind sad.gif
btw... have you ever turned ure amp up max?
dont think you'll have any problems doing that in tahiti.... just stand 50feet away and you're all good thumbup.gif

I don't think it's possible for transistors to exactly emulate the harmonics and the natural breakup of valves. You can always get the sound, but not the feel. tongue.gif tongue.gif

I never thought I could hear so well how bad I play laugh.gif What I like with the Classic series is that you can enjoy the "tube" experience even at low volume.

Can't imagine full blast in overdrive channel. Are the walls solid enough ?
I'll try it, playing in an adjacent room.. hehehe... mystical potato head groove...!

evo.com > damn, you helped leepy freeky ! yes, you don't need an attenuator on a SS amp, for the reason you invoked.
but i wouldn't be so radical with sS amp. Some are really good. And don't forget that all the Pod or valvetronix or alikes are doing a great job. Yet, it's all solidstate.

blacktrix > did the cup used to be full of x-tra strong beer before that ? did you absorb the whole content before seeing the cup move ? no wonder... wink.gif

pix, read about eurotubes too. And ya, the popular opinion on the Peavey boards is that the combo is the better sounding one due to the correct bias.

blacktrix, read around here and yes you are da man on Gibson and Marshalls. I used to be a Gibson/Marshall kinda guy too(I love Slash) but limited funds forces me to look for alternative and that's how I realized there are lots of better options other than the classic Marshall/ Gibson pairing. Sure it is the tried and tested combination but it is also not the only pairing that will work.

But since you mentioned you will be in florida, take this chance to get the JCM800 there. It will be cheaper there than any other place in the world.

And don't settle for anything less like the AVT50H. They honestly suck. I play gigs where they provide this amp(common amp nowadays) and it is a surprisingly weak sounding amp (volume and omphh)for an SS 50 watt.

I think if I where to do it, I might just send it back here to my own address as a gift. To my knowledge, if it is labelled as a gift, it will be free from tax.

I am not sure if it will work here but I have heard of people back in the States using this method to escape taxes.

Or another method would be buy the JCM800 there, stick lots of stickers making the head looked like it had been used and claimed that it's yours and you brought it from Malaysia and just bringing it back now.

Worst comes to worst, you will get tax like 25%(I could be wrong about the percentage) here.

brrr... i wouldn't do that... I got a bad experience with Pos Malaysia sad.gif Anyway, blacktrix is not planning to buy an amp from there, but just a custom fender telecaster.

But if Blacktrix is there might as well get it there right? Bentley doesn't stock the JCM800 as far as I know. Of course there is also trouble of modifying the amp to suit our voltage rating here.

And thanks for the answer man. I am trying to avoid the trouble of ordering from oversea if possible.

Edited: Wow, he replied almost immediately and good news is they have JJ's 6L6 in stock. Thanks a lot Pix, really apprecite it, you saved me a lot of money on shipping.

shouldnt be a problem using it in msia.... the voltage should be the same
and most amps can handle 50-100hz

if you get from the us all you need is a transformer...

Voltage the same here? Correct me if I am wrong but isn't the voltage in USA around 110V while it is 240V here?

If it is, the only way to use the amp here is either to modify it for the voltage here or use a step down transformer (which I don't recommend as they tend to blow due to long usage)

a transformer will eventually blow up and/or damage your amp, from what i've read. a bit scary !

laugh.gif it's very confusing laugh.gif
us = U.S.
singapore = m'sia = 220V/240V
U.S. = 110V

if you buy an electric device from the US, you'll have to use a transformer. If it's a "sensitive" electrical device, you'd better change the electrical input from the device itself because a transformer doesn't provide a perfect current.
that's all biggrin.gif

When did I say I will get a tele???????!!!!!! GIBSON FANBOY!!!! REMEMBER??!!!

And about the JCM800..... most probably, will get Bentley to do the ordering for me. Mind you, I'll probably get the JCM800 2203X re-issue model which I hear there's PLENTY going around.

And I think we better get back to topic or it's WHACKERIZED again. We should pin up a topic on "Gear we are about to get" instead

BTW have you tried a SG and a LP from similar "quality" side by side ? i'm surprised you would settle for a SG.

blacktrix, good news for you. I went to ceriatone today for tubes and got to test out his Plexi 50 watt. It's damn loud. And the price is very reasonable. Around RM3K for the head.

Anyway, the good news is, they will be offering JCM800 soon. Better get from him than Bentley. His work is top notch and his price is amazing.

He is a damn nice guy too.
