QUOTE(chuckenscream @ Oct 24 2007, 12:33 AM) namqul - isnt it the same whether u're left or righty? its just like looking into the mirror, maybe its even easier? hmm, i think for hands its ok but for legs, its not. and if combine both, its harder. u play doubles rite, try using ur left leg as main leg, and moving your hihat to right side. there is gonna be 1 point where this does not matter anymore because you mastered all, but to reach that lvl without guide, i think its hard for me.anyone knows tutorials or guides or anything can be learn by lefty for free? do share k. haha This post has been edited by Namqul: Oct 24 2007, 07:27 PM |

aah thanks, now I have something to kill my time with.
But like the article there said, community bands. I'm interested in looking for one, or at least a school band that's looking for a volunteer assistant with drumlines. |

learnin from a music school is worth it if u know which direction you're heading. seriously. they teach u the basics u need to know, and at least u have a mentor to refer too. but if u feel like its not helping u anymore, u can consider quitting.
rockschool is a music exam board, its headquarters is in UK. i dont think there's a music school in malaysia named Rock School, correct me if im wrong. |

^I read an ad for rockschool malaysia somewhere, but that was quite awhile back. If i can find it i'll post some details.
But just my 2 cents on drumming, you don't really need the classes more than basics unless you plan to read music scores. It's useful playing in a concert band, but that's about it. Not many drummers ever need to read music. For me, I spent 1 month learning the basics then i quit classes. Since then I just spent alot of time playing along to famous songs, etc etc, until I reached the point when I had a certain unique style and feel for the drums. It develops over time. Lately I've been learning more technique than anything else. When you have technique right, everything seems easier to play. Just my two cents |

I read scores for everything I play, even drums. In fact, I don't think I can learn a song if it wasn't written out. I have to have some form of notation, even if I have to scribble it on a post-it note.
Anyway, I'm a supporter of going to classes and getting a good teacher. 3 instruments and 11 years of being forced to go to classes can't be wrong =D |

There are some things in music that is impossible to write out (Applies to all instruments). If you're gonna solely rely on tabs/scores you would only be as mechanical as a programmed musician. Where's the creativity in following scores blindly anyway?
A good ear, adequate understanding of theory coupled with some sight-reading skills is the way to go, imo. And I agree with Chucky too that score-reading has its place. Who knows you need them later in your musical journey? |

Learning comes first, creativity comes later.
Besides, I don't think any of you can memorize a piece of music after playing it the first couple of times with scores. Sure anyone can play by ear instantly. But give it a few minutes and a few more drum fills later and the mind is bound to go blank. That's where the score comes in. Besides, one benefit of having the score is that you can play a new piece in your mind right away without having even heard it once. |

I've always been a firm supporter of creativity instead of reading music. like led_zep said, playing as a score tells you makes it seem very much mechanical. I prefer having the freedom to ad little licks and tricks her and there without getting yelled at for it for it.
But then again, the ability to read music comes in equally as important when playing an actual written score, as in concert band music/jazz music. @Chuck==> I didn't mean to underrate it, man. I was just trying to say that it is a useful ability to have, but if you're playing in a live band (usually rock), there is no space and time to read music onstage. No hard feelings tho Added on November 3, 2007, 1:42 amokay, so i found the ad for the "rockschool malaysia" thing, but it turns out it's called Rock CITY School, Malaysia. Potong stim abit la, but the names are close, which is why i thought they were the same. Anyways, here's the link to their website/blogspot, so you an the details off it if you're interested. http://rockcityschool.blogspot.com/ This post has been edited by liew90kw: Nov 3 2007, 01:42 AM |
