I really hope to play I'm The One & The Only with you guys, but no luck for me and your band. Thanks for the offer, ninelives1980.

I wouldn't mind joining a band. As long as tabs and mp3 are provided.

I guess there are plenty out there like me, too busy with work and can't justify spending precious spare time and effort to tab out a song. I'd rather spend time working on my chops.

Could be the reason you're not having any luck, ninelives1980. As I see there's no lack of drummers in this forum.

So learn thru listening? I used to do that before got music classes, by then I realized tabs play an important role in your music practise if you really want your playing to be great. Like each notes that you strike.

Tabs help a lot if you have a ton of music to play.
Nobody can remember so much stuff, and it speeds up the learning process.

I think everybody here can play by ear, so it shouldn't be a problem.
The problem is that when you've got 10 different drum fills to remember per song... that's where the tabs come in.

Some ppl would say that you could just wing the parts you didn't learn. I say you should only wing it after you can play the song note for note.

marching snare/concert snare FTW! laugh.gif

@p2dm: it's probably personal preference, again? Some prefer to try play the song as close to the original recording as possible. Some prefer to wing it and just personalize the song it it has that "flavor" of them in it, if you get what i mean.

You can wing it all you want. But learn the damned song first!
If you understood correctly, it's not a matter of winging it or not.

Yup, if you can play that song well and accordingly then filling is the great part to expand your playing ideas. I love to play around with The Reason by Hoobastank and A Gunshot To The Head Of Trepidation by Trivium by adding some strange fills during practise. tongue.gif

guys, stop debating....

actually, i was only after the point that if you could play by ear.....and match the song as close as possible
that's how musicians should be

i mean, after years of learning sight reading...i've come to realise this

i mean, if you give me notations and TABs....everyone could match the song 100%, but then the listening skills won't be that solidly developed

and i don't need a band member who's so reliant on notations - cos' these are all simple songs - doesn't justify givin' out notations/TABs to bandmembers

unless we're playing mozart, or tchaikovsky or sth - which is terribly hard some of the pieces, dun yall agree?

c'mon, these are all just contemporary music pieces

songs that you hear on the radio, get the idea?

okay ....lets move on......just my opinion, u guys deserve to have ur own opinions....doesn't matter who's right or wrong at the end of the day

much more better things to do in life than debating here

now....get back in line, i'm only searchin' for a drummer whose listening skills are fine, that he could get his drum beats just by listening a few times

this is not jazz, so dun worry too much party2dmax....

I usually play with ear....but studying la....cannnot join band....

Playing by listening is nicer then reading tabs. Improvise rather then memorise.

huh, ive been out for a month and only yesterday u this thread is active? lol. whats up with that?

SihamZhai, if you think studying cannot join a band, then ur too late when u start working. dam hard to keep with practice schedule if your in working life.

True that.
Student life has the most free time.

BTW, I went to check out local-made cymbals while I was in Turkey last week. You know, exotic brands like Istanbul Mehmet and Bosphorus.
I'm not sure if these stuff are high-end but I've heard that they're in the same range as the priciest Sabians or Zildjians.

Anyway I'm kicking myself now 'coz a 21" Sabian Signature ride costs ~RM2000 (at Beatspot, The Curve) while a comparable Turkish one costs RM570 before haggling. Only consolation I have is that I managed to whack most of the cymbals they had. I should've whacked some more if I wasn't buying...
