do you know your /dev/sdb1's filesystem? and /dev/sdc? from this fdisk, its like your /dev/sdc is empty without a valid fs around...n sdb1 is unknown to fdisk...i just ask to make sure, so i can send u what you can add into fstab...just to let ubuntu recognise sdb1 n sdc1(if it exist) n it's owner

QUOTE(Onso @ Sep 10 2008, 02:38 AM)
thanks for you help fastcx
but I kinda figured out the problem already.
The filesystems are Apple Mac OS Extended Journal, therefore unknown to the system.
I did a long way round this problem, copied it off to another external HD through a Mac, formatted the drive using Gparted to something
Ubuntu friendly (fat32) and now recopying the data back.

Now how do I edit my fstab to get the disk MediaOne to auto mount every boot?

Thanks for your help.
*
ok, your welcome. i use your current content and add in a couple of lines for media1(which i assume is /dev/sdb1, if its not, change that to the 1 thats suitable)

CODE
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# <file system> <mount point>   <type>  <options>       <dump>  <pass>
proc            /proc           proc    defaults        0       0
# /dev/sda1
UUID=1710fe3a-2670-465f-9828-1bfe4480a904 /               ext3    relatime,errors=remount-ro 0       1
# /dev/sda5
UUID=aebaf572-dd6a-4b1c-a316-46a4394738be none            swap    sw              0       0
#I assume Media 1 is on /dev/sdb1, if its incorrect change it to the appropriate 1. e.g. change /dev/sdb1 to /dev/sdc1
/dev/sdb1 /media/Media\ 1 auto defaults,user,exec,uid=1000,gid=100,umask=000 0 0
#i notice u have 2 partition, 1 is for media 1, another is? in that case, u can copy the previous line and paste it under the last line with device name changed to appropriate 1 n mount point. hope it works in ubuntu, it worked in gentoo n other distro tho
/dev/scd0       /media/cdrom0   udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8 0       0
/dev/fd0        /media/floppy0  auto    rw,user,noauto,exec,utf8 0       0

cheers!

Thank you for your help, my fstab as follows:
CODE
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# <file system> <mount point>   <type>  <options>       <dump>  <pass>
proc            /proc           proc    defaults        0       0
# /dev/sda1

/dev/scd0       /media/cdrom0   udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8 0       0
/dev/fd0        /media/floppy0  auto    rw,user,noauto,exec,utf8 0       0
/dev/sdc1  /media/MediaOne vfat iocharset=utf8,umask=000 0 0

Two things I've learn with my tinkering with ubuntu last night was;
1) How to edit the fstab file
2) I'm unable to change the ownership of any of the files in a Fat16/32 partition as it doesn't contain any ownership info and it assigns it's ownership upon mounting the drive.

But tonight I have another problem that I need help with.

I'm having trouble with my sharing of folders across the network specifically between my ubuntu box and my macbook.
By using the Shares-admin, I'm able to place certain folders on my network which are easily seen on the macbook. The problem is that although I can delete files from said network drive, I cannot write to it.
The second thing that bugs me is that my shared folders on my macbook are unable to be seen by my ubuntu box.
Can someone suggest a solution or point me in the right direction?

I humbly bow to you wise and knowledgeable guru's in this forum, especially fastcx.
*
haha bow is not needed, im not dead yet tongue.gif anyway, perhaps u can try the code i posted for mediaone mount point. as for mac-linux sharing, im not an expert in this, but perhaps with adding in user in the options space in fstab for the device might help. cause your issue seems related to write protection/user privilege.

another thing, there is no need to type in "iocharset=utf8", just use utf8 will be suffice. refer to the code i posted smile.gif hope they can solve some of your issues.

we just glad to help, that is what linux about! community!

Cheers!

my windows partition was beyond repair so was my linux.
both booting like snail.
so i thought i just use the recovery cd to recover windows.
then reinstall linux on top.
however GRUB is still persistent after windows recovery.
*
what recovery cd does is just to restore your hdd image to factory setting, it does not affect MBR. for that, perhaps this can help, give it a try! http://users.bigpond.net.au/hermanzone/Sup...ubDiskPage.html if this dont help, post here again, i'll give u another solution, or u can search online as well, its call zero fill

Cheers!

1. BIOS
2. Quaterdeck disk manager
3. fdisk
4. anything else?  doh.gif

bios? u mean low level format? basically, delete all previous partition table will be suffice. but did u tried windows recovery console?u can use any windows xp installation cd to boot in. when asked whether u wan2 do recovery or install, press "R" for recovery console, once u done that, select your windows installation.

once ur in recovery console, type in fixmbr and confirm your command with Y.

above solution should b able to reinstall mbr for your windows to boot

I'm having problem with my acer aspire 5051. I've been trying to install hardy heron but its stop in busybox. I had tried fedora, suse and pclinux also.Same problem occur. Any suggestion?
*
if thats the case, u can try ubuntu 8.04.1 alternative cd for installation. if u just wan2 be certain, try knoppix for checking. if it boot without problem, then it shouldnt be a problem wink.gif mayb it isnt stop, they just need damn long time to boot when splash screen is on, which i have no idea why...dell laptop also have that issue with 8.04(but havent try 8.04.1 on it), but once i disabled splash screen during booting, it cut the time almost more than double!

well it still isn't as naggy as microsoft.
i had to change my mom's computer from ubuntu to windows xp.
after the change she asked me why this one so difficult to use, so many warnings, always needs update, etc etc.
yeah ubuntu just works without too much nags and warnings.
but unfortunately i couldn't get the AIO printer to work with ubuntu which is why i changed  doh.gif
*
still its better to get epson/hp printers for linux...but their cartridge is -.-" my wallet will bleed...hahaha

Pardon my ignorance.

May I know how does Linux help in evading streamyx throttle? I have heard from somewhere that streamyx throttle does not apply in Linux.

What's the difference using Windows Utorrent with Protocol Encryption and using Linux for torrenting.

I hope my questions will be answered. I deeply appreciate your help.
*
lol! its a myth la! linux wont do miracle, its the encryption that makes it less likely to get throttled...n if ur using utorrent, pls use ipblock as well...for linux, u can always use deluge for torrent, it have encryption n ipblock so it give u more virtual "privacy"...we do not encourage piracy tho, thats y i use linux smile.gif

*
so its not related to linux, its how the software u use that encrypt data b4 sending out, thats y isp cant really detect its torrent stream. its common misconception that linux have faster internet speed...i have used both side b4, all i can say is its up to the software, not the os alone

QUOTE(xcen @ Sep 14 2008, 11:28 PM)
Thanks for clearing my doubts.

May I know how to use ipfilter.dat and what is the use of it?

I've googled and it claimed that it blocks 'bad IPs'? How do they do that? Some people even said that the download would be slwoer with ipfilter.dat
*
basically its a list of ip compiled by groups of ppl, check out their forum here http://www.bluetack.co.uk/forums/index.php

it block out data sniffers(like authorities, crackers, other intruders), u can get their list here http://www.bluetack.co.uk/bims/filters/ FAQ available in there for u to choose which u need to get for yourself. extract it, u'll get the list in there, rename it to ipfilter.dat n follow the following instructions.

as for utorrent enable ipfilter.dat:
"What is ipfilter.dat?

This is a simple text file that specifies IP ranges to block. The format is xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx - yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy
You can also use single IPs on a line (i.e. xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx). It ONLY supports blocks: it will ignore all text specified afterwards (such as what BLM and Tiny BLM does).

Do not pad IPs with 0s to ensure that it will work (i.e., write 64.12.15.0 not 064.012.015.000), though it is reported to work anyway.

Each new IP or IP range must be placed on a new line.

Place it in %AppData%\uTorrent, and set ipfilter.enable to true in the Advanced.

To reload ipfilter.dat without restarting µTorrent (1.7+ only), view the Peers tab, right click, and select "Reload IPFilter.""
Quote from utorrent site FAQ section http://www.utorrent.com/faq.php#What_is_ipfilter.dat.3F

sometimes i really want to say...u paid for the internet, use it...learn how to use it, n search in it...no offense, but i just find it kind of lazy when ppl dont search for it FIRST before ASK...

Cheers guys!

Actually, I have already search the utorrent website. But I just don't understand it.

This is because people can change their IP every so often right? So I was confused.

Is it true that it will slow down our downloading as I have heard from other forums?
Is it possible that data intruders and crackers can invade my computer if I only torrent from extremely trusted sites?

I am very sorry for taking your time and asking so many questions. I have been using Utorrent for quite a while with ups and down but no major problems. I was shocked when many people said ipfilter is a must, even more shocked to hear that it will reduce download speed.

I hope that my questions may be clarified, and again I am sorry for occupying some of your time.
*
it might reduce transfer speed, but its neglectable actually. cause its just like 10kb or less difference for me...usually i get like 60~80kb for my slow 1mb dsl speed...it blocks organizations that sniff streams(gov, authorities, organizations, they use tracker to get ip that connect to these torrents to track u), they use static ip, n most of all, this list update once every few days. thats y i use deluge, it will download the list from the site i gave u n import it. not like utorrent.

as to apply the list in utorrent, r u using winxp? if thats the case, use run, copy this %AppData%\uTorrent n run it. but before anything move forwards, download this http://www.bluetack.co.uk/config/pipfilter.dat.gz and extract it, u'll find pipfilter.dat, rename it to ipfilter.dat. when ur done, copy n move it to %AppData%\uTorrent. now go back to utorrent, in preference, look for Advance tab, look for string ipfilter.enable, check if its set to true, if not, set it to true. to make sure it works, check your log tab in the main window. it should stat how many ip is imported. if it doesnt, restart utorrent.

cheers! come back if problems persist

Wow, thanks a lot! notworthy.gif

Just 2 more questions, hope you don't mind.
Does Paranoid IP Filter sometimes block programmes that are not harmful sometimes?

Do I have to download a new pipfilter.dat oftenly? If so, how long download once? Or I just download Blocklist Manager?
Sorry for the late reply.
*
this list u downloaded n put into utorrent use is just for utorrent, wont affect others unless u use peerguard2, which is only available to xp, that will monitor your system's network in/out n filter them.

the filter u can download once a week if u dont1 to do it too often, or u can browse through FAQ section for more info, too many words to read after whole day outing hehe tired tongue.gif sorry http://www.bluetack.co.uk/forums/index.php...&CODE=02&qid=17

in your repositories setting, under "update" tab uncheck "unsupported updates (hardy-backport)", then refresh your repo. search network manager in package manager...look for network-manager and network-manager-gnome
