I have a question to ask. I'm planning to install ubuntu on my old laptop. My laptop is using a PCMCIA wifi card. Can ubuntu detect this card?..
*
what is the card's chipset? usually it gives no issue when its current n older gen chip, just the latest intel wifi chip give some problems in 64bit...cz there arent any 64bit driver from them...

just install ubuntu, got any link to must have application? totem cant seem read avi and mp3 files..
*
do this,
sudo apt-get gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse gstreamer0.10-plugins-good gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly ubuntu-restricted-extra

that will definately allow totem support avi n mp3...totem...hmm just use mplayer(install gnome-mplayer) or vlc, as for torrent, go for deluge, music im using banshee, for mounting iso(graphical usage, furius iso mount). google is your best friend now

QUOTE(Shazril @ Oct 3 2008, 06:52 AM)
how to disable the password asking? i found it's like vista's uac. kinda intrusive  biggrin.gif
*
it is for your safety, it only will ask when the thing u do is going to require root privilege, or else it wont ask u...so its not really intrusive unless ur the kind that keep messing with system settings or install uninstall packages, other wise, i do not see the reason for os to ask for your password all the time..its not like uac, uac keep ask u whenever ANY program ask for privilege(almost anything that could possibly change file system files). password asking is actually to give that program rights to change things, a security reason for it to exist, or else your just using another windows.

cheers

yup.. i know its for safety but can't i off it? im the only one who use this system and i trust ubuntu wont break the machine. and if possible way to disable login password prompt. thanks smile.gif
*
as long as your login into internet, there wont be just u potentially harm the com smile.gif get what i mean? its built into the os, u need root privilege for any other system stuff.

1st thing 1st, what did u do that require root privilege so much? cz u talk like it comes out all the time! it only will come out when its needed, i really need to know what u doing that require so much authorization. n NO u cant turn it off, its there so your system know whos messing with it b4 it let u to mess it around, clear?

cheers!

ok thanks thats the answer.

when updating ubuntu/installing software its quite annoying to enter password coz well it just an update for the system. and do the ubuntu update server is suspicious too?

and for log in one, i thought just want to press the power-on button, wait ubuntu boot up then use it. its only me using the pc so kinda repititive to log in everytime.
*
for login password, that can be done, go to system > administration > login window, go to security tab, check enable automatic login.

as for other usage, i'll give u some other solution by end of the day

Hai guys! Love ubuntu much much.

I have a Pentium4 2.40 Ghz running 1gb of ram. Normally I have two or three things running on my ubuntu box (Firefox, Transmissions, Geany), but some websites on firefox run really slowly (namely lowyat). I was wondering is it a lack of ram, lack of processor, or both?

And the result of it would decide what laptop I want to buy/construct/recycle to make my lovely portable ubuntu box.

EDITED:
I found out that whenever I run firefox it's a processor resource hog, (100% all the time).. is this normal?
*
most probably because of flash plugin, it is quite common...which is a sad case given that adobe dont really support linux well enough

*

am i able to install ubuntu that is perfectly work in my pc that contain window xp?

can i install ubuntu in another hard disk where i have window xp on another hard disk

dual boot?how?

if it is possible to install ubuntu linux in another hard disk i will go get 1 new hard disk

because i wana use linux to host server
*
it is easy to do dual boot if u install linux on another hdd/partition, try not to resize windows xp partition if u do not know what r u doing smile.gif so, if u wan an easy way out, just get another hdd n install linux on it, during installation it will detect winxp n put tat into boot menu as well.

just remember to put win xp in 1st boot device, win xp isnt tat smart most of the time it wont boot if its not the 1st partition.
