New Professional-Grade Tablet Delivers Unmatched Power and Web Performance

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA--(Marketwire - Sept. 27, 2010) - BlackBerry DEVCON 2010 -

Editors Note: There is a video and two photos available with this Press Release.

Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ:RIMM)(TSX:RIM) today redefined the possibilities for mobile computing with the unveiling of its new professional-grade BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet and BlackBerry® Tablet OS.

Perfect for either large organizations or an "army of one", the BlackBerry PlayBook is designed to give users what they want, including uncompromised web browsing, true multitasking and high performance multimedia, while also providing advanced security features, out-of-the-box enterprise support and a breakthrough development platform for IT departments and developers. The incredibly powerful and innovative BlackBerry PlayBook is truly a game-changing product in the growing tablet marketplace.
"RIM set out to engineer the best professional-grade tablet in the industry with cutting-edge hardware features and one of the world's most robust and flexible operating systems," said Mike Lazaridis, President and Co-CEO at Research In Motion. "The BlackBerry PlayBook solidly hits the mark with industry leading power, true multitasking, uncompromised web browsing and high performance multimedia."

The Tablet You'll Want to Take Everywhere

This beautifully designed and incredibly powerful tablet is ultra portable, ultra thin and super convenient for both work and play. Measuring less than half an inch thick and weighing less than a pound, the BlackBerry PlayBook features a vivid 7" high resolution display that looks and feels great in your hand. With such a unique mix of utility, performance and portability, you'll want to take it everywhere.
The New Benchmark in Tablet Performance
At its heart, the BlackBerry PlayBook is a multitasking powerhouse. Its groundbreaking performance is jointly fueled by a 1 GHz dual-core processor and the new BlackBerry Tablet OS which supports true symmetric multiprocessing. Together, the abundant processing power and highly sophisticated OS enable the BlackBerry PlayBook to provide users with true multitasking and a highly-responsive and fluid touch screen experience for apps and content services.
Uncompromised Web Browsing

With support for Adobe® Flash® Player 10.1, Adobe® Mobile AIR® and HTML-5, the BlackBerry PlayBook provides customers with an uncompromised, high-fidelity web experience and offers them the ability to enjoy all of the sites, games and media on the web. For more than a decade, the mobile industry has worked to bridge the gap between the "real web" and mobile devices through various apps and technologies and, in fact, a significant number of mobile apps today still simply serve as a proxy for web content that already exists on the web. The BlackBerry PlayBook closes that gap and brings the real, full web experience to mobile users while also opening new and more exciting opportunities for developers and content publishers.

High Performance Multimedia

The BlackBerry PlayBook features premium multimedia features to support high-quality mobile experiences. It includes dual HD cameras for video capture and video conferencing that can both record HD video at the same time, and an HDMI-out port for presenting one's creations on external displays. The BlackBerry PlayBook also offers rich stereo sound and a media player that rivals the best in the industry.
BlackBerry Integration

For those BlackBerry PlayBook users who carry a BlackBerry smartphone*, it will also be possible to pair their tablet and smartphone using a secure Bluetooth® connection. This means they can opt to use the larger tablet display to seamlessly and securely view any of the email, BBM™, calendar, tasks, documents and other content that resides on (or is accessible through) their smartphone. They can also use their tablet and smartphone interchangeably without worrying about syncing or duplicating data. This secure integration of BlackBerry tablets and smartphones is a particularly useful feature for those business users who want to leave their laptop behind.
Enterprise Ready

Thanks to the seamless and secure Bluetooth pairing experience and the highly secure underlying OS architecture, the BlackBerry PlayBook is enterprise ready and compatible (out-of-the-box) with BlackBerry® Enterprise Server. When connected over Bluetooth, the smartphone content is viewable on the tablet, but the content actually remains stored on the BlackBerry smartphone and is only temporarily cached on the tablet (and subject to IT policy controls). With this approach to information security, IT departments can deploy the BlackBerry PlayBook to employees out-of-the-box without worrying about all the security and manageability issues that arise when corporate data is stored on yet another device.

QNX Neutrino Reliability

The BlackBerry Tablet OS is built upon the QNX® Neutrino® microkernel architecture, one of the most reliable, secure and robust operating system architectures in the world. Neutrino has been field hardened for years and is being used to support mission-critical applications in everything from planes, trains and automobiles to medical equipment and the largest core routers that run the Internet. The new BlackBerry Tablet OS leverages and builds upon the many proven strengths of this QNX Neutrino architecture to support a professional grade tablet experience and to redefine the possibilities for mobile computing.

An OS Built for Developers

The Neutrino based microkernel architecture in the BlackBerry Tablet OS delivers exceptional performance, high scalability, Common Criteria EAL 4+ security, and support for industry standard tools that are already familiar to hundreds of thousands of developers. The OS is fully POSIX compliant enabling easy portability of C-based code, supports Open GL for 2D and 3D graphics intensive applications like gaming, and will run applications built in Adobe Mobile AIR as well as the new BlackBerry® WebWorks™ app platform announced today (which will allow apps to be written to run on BlackBerry PlayBook tablets as well as BlackBerry smartphones with BlackBerry® 6). The BlackBerry Tablet OS will also support Java enabling developers to easily bring their existing BlackBerry 6 Java applications to the BlackBerry Tablet OS environment.

New Demo Video Of The BlackBerry PlayBook Shows Off Multimedia, Games & Social Networking
-January 4th, 2011 @ 10:29 AM | By: Mauricio

RIM today posted a new video demoing the BlackBerry PlayBook and its multimedia, games and social networking capabilities. The video is a little over 3 minutes long and shows how the PlayBook can play videos in-line without leaving a website’s “environment”, such as in Facebook news feeds or YouTube. They also show that you can play Adobe Flash games no problem within a website like Facebook and still receive chat notifications. The websites load fast and scrolling/zooming is very smooth.

RIM has a lot riding on the PlayBook and so far it looks like it will deliver. Hopefully we’ll see some more videos soon but for now check this one out below and let me know what you think!

BlackBerry PlayBook VS Apple iPad : Specs Compared

user posted image

Apple may be steadily chipping away at BlackBerry’s market share when it comes to smartphones, but in the tablet space, it’s Apple that has the lion’s share. And now it’s BlackBerry’s turn to play catch-up. RIM took its first crack at doing just that on Monday with the release of the BlackBerry PlayBook, a smaller, lighter, more business-savvy tablet than the iPad.

But will the PlayBook become a staple in briefcases everywhere, or is RIM too late to make a difference? We’ll find out in early 2011, when the first PlayBooks arrive, but in the mean time we’ve put the specs for each tablet side by side to see whether BlackBerry’s PlayBook is a like nuclear warhead aimed straight at Apple, or more akin to a flying boat strapped with cameras.

Portability

user posted image

Winner: BlackBerry PlayBook

Not unlike RIM’s phones, the BlackBerry PlayBook will best its Apple equivalent on both size and weight. The seven-inch screen shrinks its top-down footprint correspondingly, but it also loses a tenth of an inch in depth (0.4 inches thick versus 0.5 on the iPad) and weighs 0.9 pounds, less than two thirds the weight of the 1.5-pound iPad.

Processor

Winner: BlackBerry PlayBook

As with most spec-based speed comparisons, this one’s far from cut and dry, but when it comes down to it, the iPad has one core running at 1GHz, the PlayBook has two. The ARM Cortex A9 used by BlackBerry represents a generational shift forward from Apple’s A4, which is based around the Cortex A8 processor. Besides the added computational brawn that comes with a whole extra core, like enabling 1080p video processing, the switch from 65nm to 45nm architecture should also improve battery life on the PlayBook. But there is a remaining question mark: BlackBerry hasn’t announced which graphics chipset it will pair with the A9, which could potentially leave the iPad as the gaming king with its potent PowerVR SGX 535.

Display

user posted image

Winner: Apple iPad

RIM has opted for only a seven-inch screen on the BlackBerry, quite a bit smaller than the 9.7-incher on the iPad, but resolution remains surprisingly close: 1024 x 768 on the iPad, and 1024 x 600 on the PlayBook. Essentially, that makes using the PlayBook horizontally like watching a widescreen movie on the iPad – after tearing off the black bars. While it does boast higher pixel density, the iPad still wins on size and theoretical resolution (remember, a larger screen stretches those pixels out more). And while RIM could roll out with a real stunner, it would take a top-spec LCD panel to compete with the best-in-class brightness and viewing angle on the iPad’s IPS LCD screen.

Connectivity

Winner: Apple iPad

The first generation of the PlayBook will only ride on Wi-Fi networks, leaving the 3G-capable iPad looking much more practical for frequent travelers. However, BlackBerry may be sitting on a great deal more potential in the long term. If it follows in the footsteps of BlackBerry phones, future 3G versions of the phone may be carrier-independent, and QNX CEO Dan Dodge even hinted that 4G is not out of the question. However, until hard details on these options come down the pipe, the iPad remains the better-connected tablet.

Camera

user posted image

Winner: BlackBerry PlayBook

Considering Apple’s iPad doesn’t even have a camera, even a cheapo VGA cam in the PlayBook would make this no contest, but RIM has gone above and beyond with some seriously impressive imaging equipment packed in. The PlayBook sports both a front-facing 3-megapixel camera for videoconferencing, and a rear-facing 5-megapixel camera. Even more impressively, the rear cam will shoot true 1080p video – a first for any tablet or smartphone.

Applications

Winner: Apple iPad

Rather than carrying over the latest BlackBerry OS to the PlayBook, RIM opted to start over with the new “Neutrino” OS from QNX, a company it acquired back in April. On the up side, the PlayBook gets a specially designed OS optimized for its seven-inch screen. On the downside, developers will have to start from scratch developing apps for it, rather than granting access to the 10,000 apps already available for BlackBerry smartphones through BlackBerry App World. Meanwhile, the iPad boasts access to 25,000 iPad-optimized apps in Apple’s App Store and growing, plus access to the full 250,000 made for iOS.

While it looks grim for the PlayBook, RIM has promised robust support for Adobe Flash, Adobe AIR and HTML5, which could potentially help fill the void of dedicated apps with Web applications.

Conclusion

RIM can’t hold a candle to Apple’s app collection, but with the PlayBook, it has successfully managed to outspec Apple in a number of key categories. The PlayBook’s small size makes it eminently more portable than the iPad, its high-quality cameras will appeal to business users who want to Skype with family and coworkers from across the globe, and a dual-core processor will even tickle the fancy of performance geeks – not something RIM is used to doing. The PlayBook will also appeal to BlackBerry’s core constituency with the same tight enterprise support as its phones, BlackBerry tethering, and smartphone integration that will allow owners of both devices to switch back and forth between both devices seamlessly – starting an e-mail on a Bold 9700, for instance, then finishing it on the PlayBook.

RIM has also left us with a number of blanks to fill that could tilt the PlayBook in either direction. Which carriers will it come on? Can it match the iPad’s 10-hour battery life? Perhaps most importantly – how much will it sell for?

Until we have those answers – and our hands on the real hardware, we’ll refrain from declaring a winner here, but based on specs alone, it looks like RIM has wheeled out a legitimate challenger, and Apple engineers will have their work cut out for them when they go to revamp the iPad for 2011.

Exactly my thoughts. I fail to understand why didnt they just up the specs to atleast something similar. Dual core processors + multi processing on Torch surely would be sweeet!

One thing to look out for is the applications available to the Playbook. If the applications are going to be limited compared to Apple, it will be nice for business use, but non-business ppl might not enjoy it as much as you would an iPad.

I hope RIM will make their application design platform more friendly to developers, or we'll still be stuck in the application desert.

What would think if current BlackBerry apps and games are compatible with BlackBerry Playbook?

I am hoping at least the current apps and games are compatible. But do you really need what can be run on your phone, to run on the Playbook?

I would prefer if we have apps like Kindle (for e-reading) and more touch-based games if we are going to be getting a tablet. Or other apps that would not be so cool on my phone due to the small screen, but would rock on my Playbook thanks to screen real-estate. smile.gif

Kindle, thankfully, is definitely going to be on it (WOOT!). I saw the announcement on Twitter thumbup.gif

Don't get me wrong, I'm a RIM fanboy and love the idea of the Playbook. But I'm having a hard time thinking how it would be better than the iPad in terms of functionality if the application population is not improved compared to the ones we have on our phone.

As for why RIM didn't do this when they built the Torch.... for one thing...do you want to be carrying a Playbook size phone? And another, they only bought QNX (the company designing the Playbook's OS) after the Torch was launched if I'm not wrong.

Maybe its slanted more for entertainment value than work.
"Playbook" is also a term used in sports for the book you keep all your strategy and tactics.

No matter if Samsung or BlackBerry have a better tablet and way better features, such as Flash people are still going to buy the iPad, just because it's an Apple product and Apple is just waiting to see what these other tablets could do so they could bust out the iPad 2 or whatever they call it. You already know a new iPad is on it's way...........

want free PlayBook?

Developers, it’s time to get down and dirty with the codes because you can now start writing apps for Research In Motion (RIM) BlackBerry App World for the upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook. That’s not all, if you’re eligible to be a developer for RIM and if your app gets approved for distribution on the BlackBerry App World prior to the launch of the PlayBook in North America, you will be rewarded with not only the chance to earn some money with your apps but also a FREE BlackBerry PlayBook.

The downside of Blackberries is their fantastic drain on battery power if you use all their functions fully - wifi, 3G access, sorting of files on transfer. I found that my Blackberry Curve 3G's battery charge lasts for about 2 - 3 days on a single charge if I use all its functions fully. At 1150mAh capacity the charge drains pretty fast. I have to turn off wifi and 3G if I don't need them to extend the battery charge. If the Playbook is typical of BB products I think it will drain the battery fast, too. But I read that its battery capacity is 5300mAh! So it will solve the problem of battery drain but downside is that its battery is non-removable!

Battery life is short because data are transmitted 24/7 if you are connected to BIS.. If without data it last for 3-4 days...

BlackBerry PlayBook Ads Can’t Be Missed At The 2011 International CES – RIM Making Big Announcements?

user posted image

It looks like RIM is planning on having a big presence at this year’s International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. Jessica Dolcourt of CNET uploaded a picture showing a huge banner/ad of the BlackBerry PlayBook outside CES. Even though this isn’t a RIM event, I’m sure they’ll be making some great announcements. Of course, they could just be advertising the PlayBook since this is a big tech event but let’s hope there’s more to it than that.

It’s a new year and that means new BlackBerry devices including the first ever BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. While we expect RIM to make most of their announcements at their own BlackBerry World conference, seeing ads like this one makes us wonder if they’ve got a few to share at CES. Oh and RIM, yes, we want to look and take more than a peek!

What do you think, will RIM make some big announcements this week? Be sure to keep an eye on BBRocks! as I’ll definitely be posting any news put out by them at CES.

January 6, 2011

New 4G Tablet to Deliver Unmatched Power and Web Performance - Available Exclusively from Sprint this Summer

Las Vegas, NV - CES 2011 - Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ: RIMM; TSX: RIM) and Sprint (NYSE: S) today announced plans to launch a new BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet model featuring connectivity to the blazingly fast Sprint 4G network. The BlackBerry 4G PlayBook™ will be the first BlackBerry PlayBook model to include wide area wireless connectivity, featuring Sprint 4G to give customers download speeds up to 10 times faster than 3G1. This new 4G model is expected to be available from Sprint in the summer.

The BlackBerry 4G PlayBook is a professional-grade tablet that's set to redefine the possibilities of mobile computing, giving users an ultra-portable design with industry leading performance, uncompromised web browsing, true multitasking and HD multimedia, as well as advanced security features and out-of-the-box enterprise support. Together, the BlackBerry 4G PlayBook and the Sprint 4G network will provide a high performance platform that will enable a mobile services revolution for both application developers and customers.

"RIM believes a significant portion of the tablet market will want a higher performing, multitasking, professional-grade tablet and that is why we chose to design the BlackBerry PlayBook for premium performance with a powerful dual-core processor and multitasking OS. Together with Sprint, we are now building on that performance advantage with 4G and providing an unparalleled mobile experience for users," said Mike Lazaridis, President and Co-CEO at Research In Motion.

”We are excited to bring this powerful new product to our business customers and consumers who rely on Sprint for industry-leading devices as well as one of the best values in wireless,” said Steve Elfman, president of network operations and wholesale for Sprint. “This tablet is a great example of Sprint’s strong partnership with RIM in continuing to bring customers powerful devices to enhance their mobility. We are confident the BlackBerry 4G PlayBook from Sprint will be one of the most anticipated tablets in 2011.”

In addition to Wi-Fi® support, the BlackBerry 4G PlayBook features a 1 GHz dual-core processor, 1 GB of RAM and the new BlackBerry® Tablet OS. The ultra portable, ultra thin tablet will offer an uncompromised, high-fidelity web experience with support for Adobe® Flash® Player 10.1, Adobe® Mobile AIR® and HTML-5 enabling customers to enjoy all of the sites, games, media and richness of the full Internet, delivered at 4G speeds. Additional details and pricing will be released closer to launch.

Sprint 4G is currently available in 71 markets2 across the country, including Atlanta, San Francisco, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles and New York City. We all are guessing now lets wait for the actual news...

Added on January 7, 2011, 3:01 pmBlackBerry PlayBook VS Apple iPad : Specs Compared

user posted image

Spec wise is about the same as compare to future Android table.
But I am not satisfy with Android as phone OS. So I wont put too much hope on them at Tablet.

For playbook, it seem like it is very well perform in multitasking and multimedia aspect. The browser is just awesome with full flash and html support.

I got the different opinion compare to dicksonbell.
I found out iOS is more refine compare to Android in term of UI, stability and apps.
Android at current stage still not suitable as tablet OS. Whilst more Ipad specific apps appear like "Mushroom after Rain".

Looking at Android Honeycomb video and demo...I can still see those pitfalls on Froyo or gingerbread OS.

My pick will be on Ipad 2 more than Android Honeycomb tablet. But my top pick now still Playbook.. tongue.gif

Why need Internet Explorer when RIM got it own webkit browser that perform like Desktop?? rclxub.gif rclxub.gif rclxub.gif

For phone feature, dont think it will have like at this moment. It even dont come with 3G connection. Purely wifi now.
But it got a 4G variant specifically for US Sprint.. I dont think Malaysia will get 4G soon.

About BIS, so far RIM design it to use with another BB phone for BBM, calanders, Emails.

guys...some pricing updates on the rivals.

Another fren of mine got his IPad last weekend @ RM2299 (64GB | WiFi | 33G)

Heard, they have a tough fight from Samsung Galaxy.

This morning, I read in newspaper. Motorola Xoom launched.

Playbook will require to be competitive if they are serious competing in this segment

At first glance there doesn’t seem to be anything special other than this being the first image showing the App World on the PlayBook, but a friend of mine pointed something out that will surely excite many of you. If you look at the image above you’ll notice it shows a bunch of applications like BBM, MSN Messenger, Facebook and others, but it turns out the PlayBook will also be getting a Skype application.

Considering a dedicated Skype app has only been available for BlackBerry smartphones on the Verizon Wireless network, this is a significant development. While this doesn’t mean the Skype app will be available on smartphones not on Verizon’s network anytime soon, at least PlayBook owners will be able to enjoy video chatting/conferencing since distribution isn’t limited to certain carriers.

Knowing that Skype will be available on the PlayBook tablet, would you get it if certain BlackBerry apps were only available for the PlayBook, or are you getting it regardless?

BlackBerry Virtual PlayBook On Facebook – See What Your Social Life Looked Like In 2010!

user posted image

RIM just added a cool new web app to their “Tablet” tab on their Facebook page. The web app is called “Your Life On Playbook” and gathers all your Facebook profile info, updates, pictures, videos and more in 2010 and displays them in various ways including an autobiography. This Virtual PlayBook also shows you some of its capabilities with a WebKit browser preview, videos and photo album using your Facebook photos.

It was kind of weird seeing my 2010 summarized in this way but also interesting. If you want to check yours out go to apps.facebook.com/yourlifeonplaybook!

Why? Because one of the major reasons I bought my BB 9780, is for me to be able to open, login, and add / edit details on a HTTPS website that currently can be be 100% accessed via IE [ yes, I've tried it via Firefox since 4 years ago and I can open + login, but I can't add / edit details, view certain pages etc ].

Yep, secure company website. Sad to say that for a premier worldwide company, they can't be bothered to contact RIM and RIM to assist.

Anyone can confirm whether the upcoming Playbook will have Internet Explorer, as that's the only browser whereby I can do a proper 100% login, view and edit information in a https website?

Definitely no IE for PlayBook. IE is a Microsoft Product. It'll most likely use the Webkit Browser which should also support the HTTPS protocol. I would find it weird if they implement support for HTML5 and Adobe Flash but they never implement HTTPS or other protocols like FTP even if HTML5 is not a protocol but a web design language.

i dun think it is a problem with https in BB browser. i am able to login to the full website (not mobile site) of maybank2u and perform transactions there. so it could possibly be some function that ur website is using that was not supported by the current BB browser.

Added on January 26, 2011, 5:30 pmBlackBerry PlayBook will have 4,000 apps at launch; battery life better than iPad?

user posted image

In an interview, RIM’s VP Jeff McDowell has estimated that there should be about 4,000 or more third party apps available to download for the BlackBerry PlayBook at its launch. McDoweel also made the claim that the PlayBook’s battery life will be equal to or greater than the current Apple iPad. It is a good thing to know that the battery life should be improved, as criticism did strike at the PlayBook for a brief moment.

The amount of apps that RIM seems to be estimating for the PlayBook sounds good. Although, we wonder how well of quality the apps will be when compared to others currently available on Android and Apple. Our other concern is the likeliness for the PlayBook to garner more developer support with its launch with the QNX operating system being so new to the market. What kind of apps would you like to see on the PlayBook?

Added on January 27, 2011, 1:41 amExclusive: BlackBerry PlayBook and smartphones to run Android apps?

user posted image

As crazy as that sounds, we have been told by multiple trusted sources that RIM is seriously considering a feature that will allow BlackBerry devices to run Android apps. Here is what we know… Research In Motion has been trying to figure out the path it wants to take as far as how the existing Java environment will work on its upcoming QNX tablet and smartphones. The company has publicly stated that it is looking at getting a Java virtual machine running on the PlayBook — not so much for app development going forward, but for legacy support, custom apps corporations have deployed and don’t want to recreate, etc — but RIM hasn’t yet decided what kind of Java VM it will use. Hit the break for the rest!

Here is the big news: we have been told RIM is very much considering the Dalvik virtual machine, and we ultimately expect the company to chose Dalvik. If that sounds familiar to you, it’s because it’s the same VM that the Android OS uses, and it would allow RIM’s PlayBook and other QNX devices to run just about any application built for the Android platform.

There are various approaches to this situation — one where RIM uses the open source Dalvik VM and does not involve Google, and another (incredible) scenario where RIM and Google might reach an agreement (basically “certify” the device/platform) that would provide official support to Android apps on RIM’s QNX-based OS, and would feature the Android Market, Google’s Gmail, Maps, and other apps.

With the bold moves RIM has taken lately — QNX, the acquisition of the great UI team at The Astonishing Tribe, and possibly the ability to run any and all Android apps — if the company can hang on just a little longer, it could be poised to attack the market again in a huge way.

RIM yesterday posted a new video of the BlackBerry PlayBook and its business features. This video provides a look at some of the business features available on the PlayBook including pairing, multitasking, and access to business apps such as flash enabled dashboards from SAP Business Objects. Check it out below and let me know what you think of the PlayBook as a business tool!

user posted image

The BlackBerry PlayBook has been said to work on both, landscape and portrait mode, but no one had the chance of seeing it working in portrait mode…until now. A video demo of the tablet has been released by Lotusphere where you can see Paul Steel from RIM showing off the device’s homescreen and keyboard in potrait mode.

The release date for the PlayBook is somewhere in Q1 so for those of you interested start saving up some cash for it! Check out the video at the link below and let us know in the comments how would you use your PlayBook, landscape or portrait mode?

Added on February 11, 2011, 11:25 amFour Modes for BlackBerry PlayBook Outlined by RIM VP

In a recent video demo of the BlackBerry PlayBook by RIM VP David Heit gave us the tour of various ways in which the tablet will be able to connect. We’ll have the Bridge mode we all know and love, which requires a PlayBook be paired with a BlackBerry handset to access any PIM data like memopad, e-mail, and contacts. The other mode is as a VPN device, which will basically let you use your PlayBook as a virtual desktop when securely connected over Wi-Fi. This is a great option for remote workers who need some files from the office, but I’d really love to see this function expanded that would let you use the PlayBook as a secondary computer monitor when you’re set up at your desk.......

Finally some benchy between current, new, latest incoming Tablet from different OS.

FYI, Playbook is using OMAP 4430 same as LG Optimus 3D. smile.gif

Which dual-core 1GHz ARM Cortex A9 system-on-a-chip rules the roost? It's probably too early to tell, but if you're looking for a preliminary verdict, AnandTech has benchmarked all three of them now. Texas Instruments' OMAP 4430, NVIDIA's Tegra 2 and Samsung's Exynos 4210 went head to head in a gauntlet of browser and graphical benchmarks, and it looks like the LG Optimus 3D's OMAP 4 came out on top, boasting minor but significant improvements practically across the board. Good news for the BlackBerry PlayBook, no? Oh, and if you're wondering why the iPhone 4 and Atrix 4G fall behind their older brethren in the image above, remember that they both have to render images at a higher screen resolution. More graphs at our source link below.

Added on February 17, 2011, 1:52 pmVideo: BlackBerry PlayBook WebWorks App Aura Weather Shown Off on Video...

RIM is showing off multiple features and apps lately but this latest is very compelling. Built by The Astonishing Tribe, Aura Weather was made in a week using web standards such as HTML5 and CSS but has the power and functionality that usually is only for native applications. While not a important app, this does show the capability of the WebWorks platform. Hopefully this will bring a lot of new developers onto the PlayBook.

to be fair, cant compare Samsung Tab with Playbook.
1 use single core with 512 ram
while playbook used dual core with 1gb ram

HP Says BlackBerry PlayBook is a 'fast imitation' of webOS - RIM Responds

user posted image

When their up, try and shoot em' down, seems to be the tactic of HP in a battle against the BlackBerry PlayBook. The argument is that RIM's BlackBerry Playbook borrows too heavily from the UI concepts of the software built by Palm and now owned by HP that it could easily be confused for a webOS tablet. Both handle multiple running applications using a zoomed out card view which also allows the user to close unwanted apps by swiping them off the screen. Although, the PlayBook goes further with gestures that are lacking in HP's tablet. The Hewlett Packard team makes a statement in regards to the similarity as:

"keep innovating, we'll keep honing and those guys hopefully will continue to see the value in it and keep following us by about a year."

Pretty Bold Statement!

RIM's response, as espoused by Jeff McDowell, as he says:

"when you're trying to optimize user experience that juggles multitasking, multiple apps open at once and on a small screen, you're going to get people landing on similar kinds of designs. In fact, I think QNX had that design lined up before we even started working with them."

While Mr. McDowell certainly could have thrown a low blow and mentioned the fact that webOS is basically a ripoff version of iOS in many ways, the fact is, these are private companies in a competitive market that seems to be plagued with more lawsuits than a Dalmatian has spots - so of course it's not a surprise to see competitors taking shots at each other. What's your take? Did RIM take from webOS, or did HP take from OS QNX? Does it really matter?

BlackBerry PlayBook to Launch on April 10th...

user posted image

Multiple sources are suggesting to BGR that the BlackBerry PlayBook will be releasing on April 10th. If this new rumored date is true, it will push the PlayBook’s release date behind the Apple iPad2 by a couple weeks. We originally heard that the PlayBook would be releasing late March or early April, and it looks to still be on track.

The BlackBerry PlayBook will first be sold as a WiFi only device in retail stores such as BestBuy, Staples, etc. A WiFi + 3/4G will release later to carriers. Are you still excited for the PlayBook? Do you think the iPad2′s early release will knock down the hype on the PlayBook?

I think that forumer dunno what playbook really are. There is no BBM client in playbook in the first place (as of now)
Not buying Playbook becoz of BBM on other platform? not a valid reason at all.
Also, according to the rumor, striped down version of BBM will be offer. Might not able to send photos and etc. Might not even have Group chat (to be confirm)
BBM still have exclusivity to BB user. Dont worry

Playbook is runing a new OS developed by QNX while BB phones are running OS6..It is different, however RIM has developed Blackberry Bridge to sync between Playbook and BB phones. We can sync BBM,email, music, facebook push between them. I believe we can tether Playbook using BB phones. It will be very good to get wifi version. No need to get another data plan.

Can't wait for Playbook. Just wonder is 7 inch screen is small for viewing?or how? hmm.gif

just sharing this presentation slide from Blackberry

The size is just about galaxy tab,and its acceptable for me. no need big screen size like ipad. 7" good enough to surfing and more comfortable. Been using galaxy tab for 1 month now,its a great phone indeed. .

playbook size slightly bigger and thinner than playbook. So i guess galaxy tab's pouch could fit playbook hmm.gif

Playbook will come with a cover+stand that is magnet based. In fact, do you see what Apple supplies with the new iPad2? The foldable magnetcloth wrap? They copied the idea from RIM. Its simple, protective, and comfortable. And also it can be customized too!
