QUOTE(mikelanding @ Apr 16 2011, 10:59 AM) Death silent... PlayBook maybe play-out!So I guess the launch date is stil far. Maybe June.. Now will consider to buy from US.. Shares in Canada's Research In Motion fell on Thursday as the BlackBerry maker's new tablet computer, the PlayBook, received desultory initial reviews. David Pogue, the influential technology columnist for The New York Times, complained in his PlayBook review that the PlayBook "does not have e-mail, calendar or address book apps of its own." (No Angry Birds?) Size is just right but got screw by the THICKNESS, about half an inch too thick. Pogue and Walter Mossberg, the technology columnist for The Wall Street Journal, also pointed out that while Apple offers 300,000 applications for the iPad, RIM has just a handful for the PlayBook. Mossberg said the PlayBook is more a "companion to a BlackBerry phone rather than a fully independent device. "That may be fine for dedicated BlackBerry owners, but it isn't so great for people with other phones," Mossberg said. "I can't recommend the PlayBook over a fully standalone tablet, except possibly for folks whose BlackBerrys never leave their sides." Damage control >> Forrester senior analyst Sarah Rotman Epps said the PlayBook is a work in progress. |

I notice the thickness of the playbook comparing to the ipad. But after all, it doe not really matter right? I am trying to ask help from my aunt to get me a unit. Not sure if she can though.

Saying that it needs polishing and what not is a fair analysis. But people like Walt didn't even mention the potential of QNX, or why it has so few apps, and then further mislead people to think that PB is a "companion" to a BB smartphone. I'm angry > |

wait for it. Since when RIM would have favourable review?
we ain't a cult like Apple *grin* zombies. by the way; let me post a 'soalan cepu emas'. Why the need for a calendar app, an email app, and an address book app, WHEN YOU CAN ACCESS YOUR EMAIL IN ITS FULL GLORY? (HTML, FLASH, etc etc) *grin* This post has been edited by hyperyouth_firepower: Apr 17 2011, 12:49 AM |

Of the few reviews I've read, I feel that The review by Anandtech and also CrackBerry is very honest. AT's review looks at it from a "new contender" point-of-view whereas most of the other reviews (like the one on Endgadget) are very much phrasing their sentence as PB being "just another all talk no show" product. Google up Anandtech PB review. Very complete and neutral. Why'd you need an email/calender native apps on a tablet? This is because with the WiFi only version. Your PIM gets pushed to your tablet and then you can fire it up when you need em. If they were all on the web, you could only view them when you have an Internet connection. Have said that, RIM's approach is to satisfy their corporate users that emphasizes on security. There's 60 million BB users out there. These will be the people that will be rushing out to buy the PB upon release. They've announced it LONG ago saying that the PB wont be shipped with native PIM clients from the start. Hence, consumers who b**** about native apps HAD to wait till summer for the PIM native apps to kick in. This is based on the various comments and discussions I've read from forums and blogs. |

I saw the David Pogue's reivew. Totally bias review.
Complain about small thing like button hard to press, thickness. so thin for what? Big and heavy like a piece of steel plate to cut cake? Moss and David must have selective memory about Ipad when first launch dont have app that build specific for it. Ipad also dont have multitasking when first launch and was stuck at iOS3.2.1 for few months! They can accept those major flaw but cant accept no email apps which RIM promised will be out within 60 days? Totally fanboyish review. For more independent I would suggest: 1) JKontherun Segan points out what many are overlooking with the PlayBook: Aside from being the first tablet for RIM, the device sets the stage for what to expect from future BlackBerry handsets as the company transitions away from its old operating system. That type of transition takes years, not weeks or months. In that light, when you consider that RIM only purchased QNX last April and built the PlayBook on the new platform, the company has accomplished much in the last 12 months. Unfortunately, it may take another six to 12 months before RIM truly begins to recoup that investment in the PlayBook, which still needs some work. 2) PCMag This operating system is nothing like the previous BlackBerry OS, and it will share many of its components with the upcoming BlackBerry 7 for smartphones. The user interface of the QNX-based OS looks great, but it’s missing basic apps, and currently suffers from a confusing SDK strategy. There’s plenty of potential and a lot of good news here, though. This OS is light years ahead of the 1990s-era Java environment you see on current BlackBerry phones. And this isn’t Symbian, which is so barnacled with the encrustations of the past that it can’t move forward. This is a beginning. 3) www.Berryreview.com had some nice article on playbook's potential that many reviewer had didnt even mentioned in their biased review. Some of the Pros he pointed out are: a) Easy File tranfer and sharing: The BlackBerry PlayBook has a feature called Storage and Sharing. It allows you to access your BlackBerry PlayBook file system and storage over Wi-Fi from your PC with NO CABLES. I personally think that every device should have this feature but the BlackBerry PlayBook is the first non-Desktop device to have this feature. I have been using it all night and I absolutely LOVE IT! If you own a ipad, it is really a PITA to transfer your photo, documents, media to it. All had to go through itune or install a 3rd party app to do it. While Playbook included in the OS! b) Bridge mode allow control on your BB microSD and Bridge internet surfing This mean I can surt net using BIS data instead of tethering! Let say I travel to Batam, Indonesia. I alway use the local sim for BIS. The rate is dirt cheap there. Only RM1.70/day for unlimited BIS. There are 3G coverage all over the Island no like the stupid Digi BIS I using now where I alway get discon when under 3G! With bridge mode, I dont need to spend extra money to get another data package for tethering purposes. I can just bridge to my BB and start to surf net...Save a lot of money. c) BB browser still work on some online streaming site like Hulu.com, slacker radio, Pandora and etc. Link Playboook's hardware is capable and powerful enough to compete with it rival. The QNX software is still evolving and improving day by day. Why need so many apps when Playbook non compromise browser are able to take over the task of many apps. Everyone complain about it smaller size. I had a Ipad before, it is too damn big and too heavy for my usage! No way I going to bring it when i go outside for mamak session. From many user's feeback at blackberry resource forum, Playbook browser perform very well. It can run Hulu (at this moment), play FB game, FB chat, Youtube play smooth as well and many more. This user on crackberry forum: Angry Bird also ported to Adobe Air and can play on Playbook... The potential is endless.. |

This should be huge for existing BB user. Bridge Browsing on your existing BIS without upgrade to tethering package

I got to test the BlackBerry PlayBook first hand. My first impressions here. Really hope they get it ready, because it mostly feels unfinished. At least software-wise.
