Wat a coincidense. I'm also considering these 2 together with 2 other models. Like u I'm definately no-no for mods (no silvertop, blacktop, 6-spd, B16, B18, big-V, small V etc). If ur comparing with the prefacelifted 96-98 AE111, here's some of my findings from my past 3mth homework.

Honda EG/SR
I'm more towards tis for looks. D no-grill front, low stance n unique door handles makes is different than others. Compared to d AE111, d interior both looks n is actually bigger although u'll sit lower. Wide area windows n low-flat design dashboard makes it look more airy also. Its main advantage is d handling (it remains as 1 of d best stock saloons without any electronic assistant). Boot is average wit a tigher entry due to boot lid design. Maintenance for d D16 is mechanically simple but stock parts can be a bit diffcult 2source n some might cost a bit more than Toyota. 3rd party/aftermarket parts r a lot for spare part, performance and half cut shops. Ur main issue is getting a well looked after unit coz its relatively a 'rice-boy' car. Watch out for worn engine and suspension bushes which happens to most Hondas. FC and power is comparable to AE111 4AFE.

- has more connecting parts esp suspension so b weary of worn rubber bushes

Toyota AE111 4AFE
My wife has a final gen. EE111 from 2000. Other than d engine, cosmetics, foldable rear seats n slightly thicker seats, its d same as d 1st gen AE111. On top of dull design, d interior is rather tight esp d rear. D earlier AE101 is slightly bigger n has more soft-touch finishing but d AE111 chassis is a bit more rigid even compared to d EG/SR. D AE111 is d 1st Corolla to hv R&D cost slashed during d 90s economic downturn so finishing is more 'lasting' but still very well put together. D corolla is a better drive in d city n short distance due to its shorter gearing ratio n lower available power than d more engaging Civic. Mechanically its very easy to service wit easily available parts. As said by some forummers, tis is a very potential car due to all independant suspension n plug-n-play 4AGEs. Used units r likely to hv higher milleage than Civic having served as family n company cars but should not hv any major issues. Keep an eye on leaking gaskets, irregular timing, n loose under body bushes as like most high milleage cars.

but xMika claimed that silvertop gives more power but from the list he posted, i see the GELU is slightly less power than GLEU??

Silvertop is more crude & sturdy. Blacktop is lightened and simplified. Hence the margin for error of Silvertop is more lenient and thus easier to mod. Therefore he meant Silvertop is more 'powerful'.

Other than that, Blacktop is more efficient as the VVT is engaged anytime full range, while the activate point for Silvertop is 4.5k rpm.

p/s: Comparing Silvertop with Backtop is almost the same as comparing L15A of previous City VTEC and current City i-VTEC.

D15B vs 4AFE ? I rather not buy them

here's from a personal experience. currently on a Corolla AE101 with 4AGE 20v Blacktop (stock auto). went head-to-head drag recently with an EG8 B16A (stock auto) and smoked it by 1 car distance. i would call it a close race. reliability and parts availability/affordability-wise, vote goes to the AE111. performance-wise, close call.

Just a friendly opinion on these two great cars, in the end it really depends on what you really want in the car, the Toyota family has been known for their engine, their engines can take much abuse and revving, the Honda may have the upper hand with Vtec but it really all ends in tuning of the ECU. Hondata is famous for the Honda cars whilst Toyota may have more options.

Engine wise as I said, Toyota's are known to take heaps abusing e.g: Supra, Starlet, Corolla.
As for fuel consumption, I think it's pretty much similar and it also depends on how you drive it, redlining the rev-meter will not help at all in fuel consumption this i know in my car .
Anyways, spare parts for the Honda is cheaper than AE111 for what I can say because we don't get much AE111's in Australia.
Maintenance for these two cars, well it actually depends how often you service your car and what you put in your car is very important such as fuel and engine oil. I think the maintenance of these 2 great cars are I think pretty much the same. Keep your car healthy and you can save much on other mechanical issues in the long run.

Anyways in the end, two very similar cars, 2 great cars, as for my opinion, go out there and test drive these 2 cars, give it a good test drive and feel which one is more comfortable, and i'm not talking about feeling comfy when you rev it hardout and start drifting it, think about the most common things like parking, braking, turning ratio, radio, speaker, anything that makes your life easier on the road especially stuck in the traffic conditions in Malaysia

wow lucky you. my previous eg6 had tons of problem after it first started to overheat.
and after a lot of talks with eg`s owner they also complaint on the overheating problem.
although i must say the DRVING EXPERIENCE is really nice. but tired of meeting uncle woksop.

toyota SEG is really good i guess. even toyota salesman concur to the idea.
they even said latest vios/altis is nothing compared to previous gen car.
but mind telling me whats wrong with the vios/altis????

agreed... the new vios dugong and g10 altis a lot of interior noise issue.

AE111 SEG is the robot back square lamp model.


The final SE AE111 is semi eliptical lights one.


But the best is AE101 SEG. But the car is older.


So which AE111 is that? The best is AE101. It is over engineered and over reliable. AE111 acually falters in sales and design rather than reliabilty. U do get better engine mileage with the AE111 than the AE101 because of emmission controls. The problem u will have now for these cars is, INSURANCE rather than repayment. Honda parts are always more expensive than Toyota somehow. Its either there is no one taking them in or the focus for high performance honda engines overshadow the normal ones that causes the price problems.

if u do not bother about mods and such, the Toyota is the choice. Usual inspection rules apply to buying second hand cars even no matter how reliable Toyota is. Its better to check throughly. Good luck. Actually for the money, i would rather be paying for a 1.4L Ford Fiesta.
