I must say thx to Tentris for alerting the right channels. Lets hope now something can be done about it.

It's one thing when the user does something stupid that leaves themselves open to attacks (like setting dmz or what not); but it's different when your isp treats your security as if it is of no consequence to them, that is bollocks.

I too wonder why there has not been any group law suits against them for exposing our networks needlessly, if anything like this happened in any western country, there would be heavy fines or what not  rolleyes.gif And remember, it's not just home users who are affected by this, but businesses as well who have a lot more to lose  shocking.gif
Anyway other than that issue mentioned above, my Unifi 10 mbps is doing pretty well  nod.gif

From what i can see, TM is responding to this. The fact that the news hit my blog (10,000 pageviews a day), then also featured on MT (lol 1 million pageviews a day?), means that they can't ignore the problem. They must respond.

The VP for Corporate Affairs has told me that their Tech team is looking into it now, and have some preliminary findings (i've shared this privately with riz -- i want TM to engage riz directly, acknowledge his work, and damnit, even reward him for it). We'll see what they do next.

Also. Why is Microtik RB250GS is better than the DIR-615?
*
Why is a Toyota better than a Proton?

Both are cars, so sure can take you where you want to go.

But one has got better mileage, looks better, and won't break down so often.

There you have your answer.

<-- very happy RB250GS customer.

Everyone,

This is the reply i received from Izlyn Amalia Ramly, the VP Head of Corporate Communications, on the issue of router security which brought to their attention several days ago.

QUOTE
Dear Aizuddin,

Following up on our email discussion, thank you again for your help highlighting this important UniFi Residential Gateway (RG) issue in your blog “Hacking Ethics -- Unsecuring UniFi” published on 25th October.

Your concern on matters regarding UniFi is highly appreciated and we have taken note of the hacker access into the UniFi RG (router). In fact, this is in line with our regular security review of the active elements of our UniFi network service delivery platform. We do admit that we have also seen this possibility and are currently taking the necessary action steps to address the issue, as follows:

1.      Disabling remote access to the UniFi RG for all UniFi customers.

2.      For a longer term solution, we are working with our equipment supplier to address the matter raised, which includes planned firmware upgrades. This, together with our ongoing action plan related to the deployment of an end-to-end customer service delivery, will soon mean that RG remote access management would no longer be required for future customer troubleshooting. This will also provide our customers with further enhanced security features. We have an intermediate timeframe for this .

We believe the matter of RG security will only have an impact on the user’s Internet and IPTV connectivity. However, as an added precaution, we urge customers to take the relevant steps to protect their PC content, as the risk of it being accessed by hackers is independent of any RG issue.

As for the issue of BTU security, to the best of our knowledge, this can only be physically accessed at the user’s premise and not remotely. We are still investigating the telnet claim.

The provisioning of any new service utilising new technologies, will bring in its wake challenges such as this. However, we reassure our customers that TM will always place customer security as a top priority and we will not compromise on this.

We would also like to take this opportunity to express our sincerest appreciation to all our UniFi service users who are very active in their postings through online forums, blogs and discussion groups about their various experiences with the service. This provides us a source of valuable feedback from the ‘ground’ as well as a platform to further carry-out service improvements for the betterment of UniFi customers.

I'm not a technology guru, so i can't really validate everything she's said. Hopefully there will be some here who will be able to respond constructively, and i'll funnel the feedback back to her.

Guys, take note of this.

TM is finally getting their act together, and will begin plugging the security holes soon.

Guys, read this. Very important.

All of this is partly because of what we managed to accomplish as a community. TM wants to engage with us, and speak to us directly. Let's not waste the chance.

Btw, can you help me ask if they have a clear communication on whether existing Streamyx/Landline users migrating to Unifi can be migrated automatically + retain old phone number, instead of having to cancel separately? E.g. My dad has been a TM user for more than 30 years and he had to cancel the 30 year old home phone number + streamyx account when migrating. This also had to be done separately. It's sad losing that old number and will my dad be considered just a 1 year old account? It might be too late for me, but I'm sure other new sign ups would appreciate this feature.

Confirmed, cannot retain old number.
