i think hmm.gif ~~male are little bit stubborn than female if i compare my doggie with my boss doggie~~but not all male learning process is slower than female..
it is depand on their personality..some poodles are lazy(i.e. my boss dog pi pi) and some poodles are hyper active~ my boss has two toy poodle, one like to learn new stuff(Bosco)but the other one is vy lazy(pi pi)~

i think it depends on the dog's own personality
i have 2 male n 4 female
both male learn faster than 2 of the female
while the other 2 female learn faster than 1 of the male

I also think 50% is on the owner responsibility on teaching
and 50% is on the dog on how quick they pick up

not all kids are born smart? what do u think the kid will feel when their parents force them to study when the kids themselves don like to study and are interested with some other things?

probably your dog has some hidden talent and time will tell. do not force ur dog just because it is learning slower wink.gif

no offense, somehow you are just like all the typical kiasu parents out there

Teddy also learned very slow and he is very stubborn. When i teached him, he only want the reward and dont want to learn that. But the funny thing is Wawa, my another dog (just a normal dog, not poodle) hearing my command and want to rampas the reward i give. biggrin.gif

At the end, I think Wawa become smarter while Teddy is still the stubborn him. Some time really very gek sim, but have to be patient with him lo.

What I am trying to get here is to know why sometimes when I give him a simple command which he already know (down or sit) and not doing it. He is not listening just focusing on the food in hand. My dog is smart, just stubborn at times. He is 4 months old and now is a good time to train him. I am usually out of idea and paige.pc will help me out with this. smile.gif My first dog, still learning to take care of them. smile.gif

No worries , just need to do 1 command at 1 time , practise that command until u sien
Then when he does it very quickly by 1 time command , that is when they 100% know and it is practised
Only then start with a new command and repeat again , when start with new command , remember to also practise the first command as well

Never give up , never give the food in ur hand to them if he doesnt follow the command , if he unsure how to do sometimes , then hint it to them by pushing his butt if it is ( SIT ) by example.

The keyword i learnt is never give up , start with new command only when u have time , dont start and then give up after a couple of minutes lo.

Whether fast or slow learner , they need practise.
It is just about getting the command faster or slower , but still need practise lo.

And make sure they are calm when you are teaching
If they aren't calm and got over excited , i dont think it is a time to teach cos they want to play for that moment.

That is how i teach Cookie and she just learnt a new trick yesterday i taught her how to play dead Bang , super funny the way she does it , especially when i Bang and she is dead , then she try to get up back to take food from me , i Bang another time while she is getting up lolx , then she is dead again lolx. Successfully kao tim play dead trick yesterday

Added on September 7, 2010, 10:51 amI learnt from watching Cesar Millan that a dog needs to be calm and in a pack , who is the follower and who is the leader.
Generally listening to you meaning you are the leader
While taking a stroll with you , you walk the dog , not the dog walks you so the dog has to be in line with you and not infront walking you.

Thats one of the basic from Cesar Millan

Qian Qian is cute. How old? How come you can bring out so fast? I thought they are suppose to be kept indoor until 3rd vaccination?

Hi Yeowa, you can bring your dog out just by holding it in your arm. Actually you can socialize ur dog by bring it to your friend's home to let it social with vaccinated and healthy dogs plus people. Bringing to outdoor is not encouraged because u don't know what your dog will pick up from ground and also for dogs who come in contact with it, you don't know the background.

For people who is trying to teach your dog obedience and tricks. The first very important thing you need to teach your dog is pay attention, focus on you. This is very important because you want your dog to focus on you, not the food in your hand. This will help the dog understand that all good things come from you, if the dog do what you ask for, he will get the reward from you.

You can start training "Pay attention" with a food in your hand, your dog will look at your food instinctually. Wait for him to turn his head and look at you. Once he did that, immediately praise and give him the food. Repeat this a few times if your dog managed to do it 100%, start adding in a verbal command this time, you can use your dog's name or kissy sound.

So next time before you ask your dog to do something like "sit or down and etc", make sure you grab his attention first. Make sure whenever you give a command, give your dog 15 sec before you repeat the command. Don't do like "sit sit...... SIT!", you are training your dog to ignore you or your dog will only sit when you say Sit x3. Why 15 sec? This will give enough time for the dog to figure out what you want when he is still learning, and also some dogs are just having slow reaction.
