Mancini paves way for Given to leave City

Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini has admitted he is prepared to let goalkeeper Shay Given leave the club in January, though reports linking him with a return to Newcastle United have been dismissed as "wild stuff" by Magpies boss Chris Hughton.

Given revealed on Sunday that he is finding life on the bench "very, very frustrating" and said he is keen to secure a loan move in January.

And following City's 2-0 win at Wigan, where Given was again an unused substitute, Mancini said that his goalkeeper would be allowed to find a new club.

Mancini said: ''I have a lot of respect for Shay and I told him the situation before the finish of the [transfer] market, 'Shay, you can choose. I hope that you stay here but I respect your decision and if you want to leave you can.'

''He decided to stay here and until January he must stay here. I understand his frustration but I need that Shay stays here and puts in 100%. In January if he decides to leave I respect his decision.''

Despite Mancini's assertion that Given will not move until January, his former club Newcastle were thought to be seeking permission to sign the Irishman on an emergency loan deal after regular No.1 Steve Harper was ruled out with a shoulder injury.

But Newcastle boss Hughton appears to be happy to stick with young goalkeeper Tim Krul , who stepped into the breach after Harper came off in Saturday's 1-0 win at Everton , after dismissing claims he would move for Given as "wild stuff".

"I can understand that one and it is a very emotional one as well, but no, I can categorically say that won't be happening," Hughton said.

City's currently limited cover - they have Stuart Taylor and Colombian David Gonzales as back-up goalkeepers - also reduces the chances of Given leaving before January.

Meanwhile, Mancini has played down reports that he had a furious bust-up with City striker Emmanuel Adebayor. He joked: "We fought in the dressing room for an hour. I won because I don't have any scars. It was nothing."

i think Koscielny deserved a rest already? He has done a tremendous job for a new comer. Just like vermy last season just that he loves defending more
