QUOTE
It has been nearly three years since Irrational Games released BioShock, a critical darling and a financial success. Somehow, designer Ken Levine and his team have managed to keep their new project under wraps until now. The mystery ends today, with the unveiling of BioShock Infinite. Set in 1912 (making it a prequel!), Infinite will look unlike anything you'd expect from a BioShock game.

Bioshock in the sky!
Woohoo! rclxms.gif

Always thought Icarus = something to do with sky from the tweet.
But never thought it is a Bioshock game.

*edit*

some more details

from the interview:

1. Ken Levine said that the buildings in the sky can actually collapse!!!
2.This game uses Unreal Engine 3(bioshock was Unreal Engine 2.5), but theres no shared codes, meaning all fresh and new
3.Bioshock Infinite wont feature photorealism as crysis or other next gen fps, but rather a "stylized visual"
4.The ppl whos working on this game consist a very limited ppl of only 80 staff (I like this, quality over quantity)
5.Combat will now involves more baddies, he mentioned 15 thugs at once shocking.gif
6. Bad guys dont suddenly attack you, theres actually some sequence before they start to gank you nod.gif

An excerpt of the demo:

You play as Booker DeWitt, a disgraced Pinkerton agent, and you need to find a woman named Elizabeth in a city called Columbia.
Which brings you to the problem, you dont know where the hell is Columbia! (hint:its in the sky...lol)
Some weird things happens, some woman sweep her stoop while a house behind her burns, dead horse lying on the ground.(really wtf)
Got some sequence where "the boss" order his underlings to attack you.One of the thugs can control crows.
After you killed him, you get some bottle shaped like crow and drink it, and presumably get the power
Theres a sky track, connecting the buildings, and you use some hook device to travel.Theres also some action sequence while you travel.
You found Elizabeth, she actually turns out to be badass too, making a raincloud. You use the boosted electric power to clear the baddies.
Elizabeth makes a big metal ball, you use telekinesis to throw it over the thugs.
You actually see the badass guy in the trailer's face, with floating heart and big hands, and turns out he wasnt all that badass.
Cos a big effing bird lands and trashes a building behind him! (maybe someone was riding it?)

*NEW*

demo video, 100x better than wall of text

If you meant wolfenstein 3D then I beg to differ, as they have mecha Hitler as end boss.

Judging by the hand that grab the woman with plasmatic power (only an assumption, may not be related), it will be equally or bigger than Big D.

Wow, that trailer was very much like the original Bioshock trailer. I like!

And hot air balloons to lift the cities up? Ingenious!

Now, we just need more info on the game.

How BioShock Infinite’s Creators Are Crafting Adventure from Labor Strife, Dead Horses and the Energy of the Tea Party

QUOTE
Some time ago, game designer Ken Levine commented wryly about the shallow pool from which video game creators get their ideas.

"Most video game people have read one book and seen one movie in their life, which is Lord of the Rings and Aliens or variations of that," he had said. "There's great things in that, but you need some variety."

At the time he and his team at Irrational Games were a half-year way from releasing BioShock, a first-person shooter set in a failed underwater utopia rusted with Ayn Rand Objectivism, a philosophy of exclusionary excellence that had failed the sunk city.

"Look, I just steal from other sources," he freely admitted.

Four years later, the influences for Levine and Irrational's next big game are just as atypical: a photo of a dead horse, a horrible fire that occurred 100 years ago this week, and even the spirit that motivates the Tea Party.

The ideas are helping to animate BioShock Infinite, a highly-anticipated game set in 1912 aboard a fantastic floating city called Columbia that is rife with conflict between a group called the Founders and group called the Vox Populi. Much of their motivations remain a mystery, but their schism emerged, Levine has explained, over the concept of American Exceptionalism, over the nature of America's place relative to the international community. Columbia's patriots preciously guard their gun rights and fret over the influx of non-whites to their society.

BioShock Infinite is a video game, one in which the main, advertised action of the 10 minutes that have been shown of it so far, is shooting. The games Irrational makes these days, however, are not just about what you do in them but what you experience. They're intentionally transportive software that treats, in the words of the game's lead artist Shawn Robertson, "a city as an actual character in the game."
How BioShock Infinite's Creators Are Crafting Adventure from Labor Strife, Dead Horses and the Energy of the Tea PartyNate Wells, art director for Irrational Games' BioShock Infinite, on the first of several reference photos that helped inspire his team's upcoming game: "This image is really the foundation of how Irrational believes a story should be told. Use simple, direct imagery that communicates a clear message with environmental content, without inserting a sign which reads: "Isn't This Tragic?". Provide a striking visual, and free the player to generate their own emotional response and personal stake in the narrative."

The city the BioShock builders are creating draws from influences captured a century ago. At PAX East, a gaming convention held in Boston earlier this month, Levine and three other senior creators on the game showed a series of photos — and some amazing early gameplay videos — that helped inspire the look and feel of their Columbia. (Those photos, including the arresting one of a dead horse, are presented again in this story, with captions by the game's art director.)

"We want to create a world that's interesting to explore, a society that's interesting to explore and discover," Levine said. "And you can't have a society without a battle of ideas."
How BioShock Infinite's Creators Are Crafting Adventure from Labor Strife, Dead Horses and the Energy of the Tea PartyWells: "We passed around the book Devil in the White City, and started talking about the Chicago World Fair 1893 and the sense of optimism and the sheer volume of innovations on display at that event. It just adds so much to the palette.

You also can't have an Irrational gaming city without those ideas, according to the game's art director Nate Wells, who said, "We can't build a building or lay a street until we know what the story is."

The ideas thing is unusually important to the BioShock enterprise. It's a sort of thought-as-theme that doesn't emerge in the finished product of many other video games. "I say this as the hugest World of Warcraft fan in the universe," Levine remarked," What are the philosophies of the Horde and the Alliance? That's kind of hard to say… I think they are very visually distinguished from each other, but we start with what are the ideas, and how do we make the visuals reflect those ideas."

The original conflict of ideas for BioShock Infinite was going to be a rift between technologists and Luddites. "The more we played with it, the more it felt like this is not a conflict that feels organic and would tear the city apart."

They found instead the energy of nationalism, the spirit Levine and team see around the worked, in the literature they've read — he cites Sinclair Lewis' It Can't Happen Here — and throughout American history, through the John Birch Society and the Tea Party.

"We thought of this before the emergence of the Tea Party," Levine said, batting off a suggestion that this game, a game specifically about an America movement, set to be released during a Presidential election year, is a commentary on the politics of now. "I think these are themes that happen over and over again," he said. "We looked at some of the extremes of what ultra-Capitalism could bring [in the first BioShock] before the [real] collapse of the financial system. It's not that we have a vision of the future. We have a vision of the past."
How BioShock Infinite's Creators Are Crafting Adventure from Labor Strife, Dead Horses and the Energy of the Tea PartyWells: "While it's never our intention to give a wholly accurate historical representation in our spaces, sometimes a piece of reference emerges that gives such a compelling portrait of a different era we have to draw from it. In a time before large-scale image reproduction, there was only hand-painted text. This storefront, and the entire street on which it sat were dominated by an overwhelming mass of it, with whole cities looking as though they had papered-over with book pages. Though it doesn't call out a specific date, it is so clearly not now. It's also interesting that this store, at photographed around the height of mass immigration in America, has text only in English."

The Irrational team also found their game energized by the the passions of labor conflicts. The same fervor for worker's rights that motivated recent mass protests in Wisconsin and awoke a nation following the fire at the Triangle shirt factory in Manhattan on March 25, 1911 deepens the rift in BioShock Infinite's Columbia. Levine said he is working on a level of the game now that draws on the events of that tragic fire, a disaster of employer negligence that killed more than 100 immigrant workers who toiled in intolerable conditions.

There isn't much Lord of the Rings in all that, and maybe only a dash of Aliens. Yes, a dash. More specifically, of Alien, the first movie in that sci-fi series. There's one scene that's set during a meal. A spaceship's crew is chowing down, joking with each other. Suddenly one of them chokes, writhes, and, in a bloody instant, a small alien bursts from his chest. "I remember sitting outside the theater afraid of that movie and watching that scene through the glass of the door," he said. Today, he marvels at it because it was so horrifying while being so…. brightly lit.
How BioShock Infinite's Creators Are Crafting Adventure from Labor Strife, Dead Horses and the Energy of the Tea PartyWells, on an influence for BioShock Infinite's airborne floating city, Columbia: "After settling on Columbia, we immediately started digging into period architecture and photography and it became clear in about five minutes that this was going to work really well, but also, it was going to be extremely difficult to pull off."

BioShock Infinite is not a dark game, not dark like the first BioShock or like most of the games with guns that are popular today. At PAX East, art director Nate Wells showed how the new game was going to be dark, was going to have dark skies, but then they turned them bright blue. He, Levine and the rest believed they could evoke mood and emotion in their game without what they believed would be the easier path of dark streets and mood lighting.

They could make a brighter game and still make their player feel the gravity of a tough situation and the drama of a place. They can make their game about a 1912 America that feels modern, one that is set on a city rising beneath a blue sky, set aloft by the drifts of history and the zeal that drives those who see themselves as patriots, back then and right now.

Bioshock Infinite will have online multiplayer anyway?
QUOTE
Back in August, Ken Levine claimed that like the first BioShock, there would be no online multiplayer in BioShock Infinite. Some investigation into Gamasutra's job listings may have given lie to that statement.

The classified reads Irrational Games is looking for "exceptional individuals to expand our Online Infrastructure team, where our mandate is to leverage online connectivity to deliver added value and groundbreaking experiences to gamers worldwide, both at launch and over time."

In an inteview, Levine said "We are never interested in making a multiplayer mode you could just play in some other game. Because, A) that's not creatively interesting and B), financially, you're wasting your time. They're going to go play Halo. They're going to go play Call of Duty."

However, online may be being forced into the game by 2K Games to combat used game sales. We'll let you know if this rumor turns out to be true.

Bioshock without multiplayer is a wise idea. The game is actually focus on SP only and the multiplayer is bad as we can see from bioshock 2 where the online community is dead. I really enjoy the bioshock 1 and 2 sp

Bioshock Infinite: explaining Sky-Lines
QUOTE
Bioshock Infinite creative director Ken Levine discussing the Sky-Lines in the game, and how they basically amount to satisfying his hunger for vertical combat by being rollercoasters you can fight enemies on.

Check out the developer video below to learn all about those dizzying Sky-Lines.

Get an early taste of the BioShock: Rapture novel

QUOTE
Announced in a partnership back in 2009, the Tor and Take-Two undertaking of BioShock: Rapture, a novel detailing the events of Rapture prior to the original game, is finally making its way to bookshelves on July 19. Tor, in anticipation of this event, has published the first excerpt of the novel to the public, taken from the book's first chapter.

The prequel novel is written by John Shirley, an accomplished screen and songwriter, as well as the Bram Stoker-award winning author of Black Butterflies. He also wrote the script for The Crow, so Brandon Lee fans take note. To read the excerpt, hit up the source link below.

Sure, but have to wait quite some time. I took the cheapest shipping (18-30days) and another 1-2 months to read. I also hope it's nice. I would like to suggest Metro2033. The novel is way better than the game.

Third BioShock Infinite dev video gets otherworldly

QUOTE
Ken Levine, in the third developer video for Bioshock Infinite, discusses the Tears, which are "Windows into Other Worlds."

Elizabeth's magic isn't so much mystical as it is focusing on the physics research of the turn of the century, with such concepts as Heisenberg and Einstein being brought into fruition, and the concept of the multiverse, in which layers of probability can be explored by Elizabeth, tearing into the fabric of reality and bringing them into our universe.

This is, presumably, where the "Infinite" in the title comes from.

Check out the developer diary in the video below, and let us know if this makes you even MORE excited for the game.

BioShock Creator Says Game Creators 'Need to Be on Mainstream Shows'
QUOTE
Irrational Games' creative director Ken Levine thinks that developers need to take a more high profile approach to promoting their games in the mainstream. He recounted a telling experience ahead of the public premiere of BioShock Infinite's E3 demo on Spike TV to Gamers with Jobs [thanks GI.biz].

"We had a room full of college students, in some fraternity in some state school somewhere – this is about a year ago – and they had never heard of BioShock. None of them. Not a single one," said Levine. "I think as an alpha gamer you assume that, 'whether you've played BioShock or not, you've heard of it, right?' These guys had never even heard of it."

Levine cited the marketing mantra that consumers have to be exposed to something three times before they absorb it. While TV and outdoor advertising are becoming more prevalent, he wants the industry to go beyond that.

"I mean, how many times have you seen images of Transformers?" he asked. "Whether you want to or not you've probably seen it 15 or 20 times... We're making products that cost however many millions of dollars and have the potential to have a large audience, but... to get people who aren't alpha gamers there's a whole different kind of activity that you have to undertake."

"That isn't just about buying ads. It's the places you can reach [new people]... We need to be on mainstream shows, we need to be on NPR, we need to be on The Daily Show, we need to be in those places talking about what we do,” mused Levine. "We're still ghettoized as game developers, and Spike TV is a great place in the middle, but we really need to think about how do we reach out and talk to people so you don't have a room full of college kids saying, 'I've never heard of that damn thing.'"

"You can't find a more impressive set of guys than Ray and Greg from BioWare - they're medical doctors, they're MBAs, they run this company, they're brilliant game developers, but I haven't seen them on The Daily Show,” noted Levine. "It's not their fault. It's our fault. As an industry we need to think of ourselves differently. We need to think of ourselves that way and present ourselves that way... We have a responsibility. People like me, like Cliff [Bleszinski], like Ray and Greg, have a responsibility to educate people who don't think of games. Like the people booking those shows."

"A lot of it is getting the guys that book those shows past their own lack of knowledge and their own discomfort about games,” he added. “There's no material reason why a Tim Schafer isn't going to be as good a guest as some guy who wrote a book that sells 15,000 copies. But there's a natural discomfort that the bookers must have, and part of our job is to get in front of those people and say, 'Hey, we're out here, we're doing cool stuff, and we want to speak to a broader audience as well.'"

Jimmy Fallon has openly sought out major games like Donkey Kong Country Returns, Uncharted 3 and Gears of War 3 for the Late Show, but he's definitely the exception. Do you think Ken Levine should appear on The Daily Show to promote BioShock Infinite?

Levine reveals the psychology behind Bioshock Infinite
user posted image

QUOTE
We've seen the hypnotic 15-minute trailer for Bioshock Infinite, but much more lies beneath the floating surface of Columbia. Levine revealed the method behind Irrational's madness in a lengthy interview with Rock, Paper, Shotgun this week, discussing the stress to make Infinite perfect and the trials of living in a dream within a dream.

Levine wants the story and AI behind Elizabeth to run so smoothly that players fall in love with her, which means innovating her every motion with a mix of scripted scenes and environment-induced emergence. Levine said Irrational are also taking a psychological approach to the player's relationship with Elizabeth, through the heady ritual of self-sacrifice:

I started thinking about how a very sick patient often rapidly feels an intense bond with their doctor, because they're in danger. The same is true of people in combat. This tuned us to the nature of sacrifice, and to what a character wants and will sacrifice to get it. Elizabeth wants to control her own destiny and she'd rather die than not control her own destiny. We thought that this was something people could empathize with, but we also thought that sacrifice rapidly builds connections between people.

After that, the interview takes a decidedly philosophical "Is this all a dream? Why are we here? Who is the boss?" turn, but if you're interested check out the full interview on Rock, Paper, Shotgun

Personally I'm quite worried that the game becomes too 'scripted' thus making it somewhat linear, anyone else having similar thoughts after watching the latest demo?

BioShock Infinite time rift uses assets from canceled Irrational project

user posted image

QUOTE
The most striking moment of the thoroughly striking E3 demo for BioShock Infinite was, undoubtedly, the moment in which Elizabeth momentarily loses control of her powers, opening a rift to a much, much more modern world than that of the floating city of Columbia. It was surprising, effective -- and it almost didn't happen. In an interview with Gamasutra, Ken Levine explained, "It was supposed to be to this primeval forest kind of thing, and it just wasn't striking or different enough ... but we had assets from a game we abandoned."

Levine added that the development team "made a bunch of changes to really sell it, but we had all those assets just sitting around from a game we never shipped." Well, great. Now we're going to spend the day trying to guess what that canceled game was. Maybe The Lost? We don't know if a PS2 game could look this good, though. Maybe it's something secret, like Freedom Force: Rise of the Multiplex Menace.

No, that's probably not it at all.

BioShock: Infinite to Ship 4.9 Million, Says Analyst

QUOTE
he next game in the BioShock franchise is aiming to push close to 5 million, says analyst Mike Hickey at Janco Partners.  Hickey believes that Irrational is expected to ship 4.9 million units at release.

Coming from a note to investors, Hickey stated that BioShock: Infinite is capable of hitting a grand total of $221 million in overall sales, based on 4.9 million units sold.  Compared to 3 million on BioShock 2, this is certainly a step up.  BioShock 2 was not, however, developed under Irrational.  The first game in the series was able to hit 2.2 million shipped in just under a year, with a grand total of 4 million sold.  BioShock: Infinite is looking to surpass those figures by leaps and bounds if Hickey is on the money.

BioShock: Infinite is set for release in 2012.

Too many chefs: Ken Levine's thoughts on auteurship, editorship, and his work on the BioShock film

user posted image

QUOTE
When it comes to the development behind BioShock 1 and BioShock Infinite, Irrational Games studio head Ken Levine described his role as that of "editor of a magazine ... but I'm also a writer for the magazine," putting things into terms that my word-addled brain could understand. "I believe more in editorship. Auteur sounds like you do everything," he began, making a point to preface his following description with a nod to the other 100-ish folks employed at his Massachusetts studio.

That aside, Levine was clear that his role on Infinite is absolutely that of creative lead, not just creative oversight. "This is my game. And I love the fact that we sit down and chat with each other [Levine and other game devs outside of Irrational], but at the end of the day ... this thing's gotta be my decision."

When it came to the translation of BioShock 1 from game to film, however, Levine's role changed -- even though he had been creative lead (head editor?) during the game's development. "If I were to make a game that was based on somebody else's franchise, you need somebody there who's going to say, 'This is true to the franchise, this isn't true to the franchise.' So that was more my role in the film," he explained.

It's his belief that the film is now in capable hands, even without his direct supervision. "Unless for some reason I decided I'm gonna go be a screenwriter or something, but then that's a particular job and I have a different responsibility there, which is writing a script instead of the guy who protects the franchise and makes sure the film is true to the franchise."

While we were on the subject of films, I prodded Levine for any more info on the infamous "Revenge of the Jedi" scene in BioShock Infinite and its origins in a canned Irrational Project. Unsurprisingly, Ken was reticent to say much. "There's a reason we didn't proceed with it. From our studio's perspective it wasn't the right project for us at that time. And we sort of fell in love with the idea of doing this -- with the BioShock world," he allowed. "But I can't talk about what it is," he concluded with a smile.

Levine dislikes 'auteur' label, "sounds like you do everything"

QUOTE
Irrational Games' Ken Levine declares BioShock Infinite "my game," but he doesn't like being labelled its grand auteur, he believes "more in editorship."

The studio boss loves getting to sit down with his staff to "chat with each other," but in the end it's "gotta be my decision." Levine wants film 'true to BioShock'.

The Irrational founder described his role as like an "editor of a magazine... but I'm also a writer for the magazine," and he doesn't like being thought of as the single driving force behind the BioShock experience.

"I believe more in editorship. Auteur sounds like you do everything," said Levine.

He is absolutely its creative lead: "This is my game. And I love the fact that we sit down and chat with each other, but at the end of the day... this thing's gotta be my decision."

A film of the underwater antics of Rapture is in the works, so what role is Ken Levine playing in its production? "If I were to make a game that was based on somebody else's franchise, you need somebody there who's going to say, 'This is true to the franchise, this isn't true to the franchise.' So that was more my role in the film," explained the developer.

He believes the project is in safe hands: "Unless for some reason I decided I'm gonna go be a screenwriter or something, but then that's a particular job and I have a different responsibility there, which is writing a script instead of the guy who protects the franchise and makes sure the film is true to the franchise." It doesn't get his direct supervision.

Levine: Occupy Wall Street and tea party mirror revolution in BioShock Infinite

user posted image
QUOTE
Irrational Games' creative frontman Ken Levine started Occupy Wall Street in a city in the sky, a year before the first tent was pitched on the ground in Manhattan -- and if his timeline of events in BioShock Infinite is any indication of our own future, we'd better start building some evacuation skyhooks yesterday. Levine draws parallels between the fighting political factions in Infinite, the Founders and the Vox Populi, and the OWS and tea party movements, in an interview with the Washington Post. But it doesn't start -- or stop -- there:

"In this world, we came up with the idea of looking at what was happening at the time of the game [the 1890s], with the jingoism movement and the nationalist movement versus internationalist movement," Levine said. "This was before the tea party, before Occupy Wall Street. Actually, when people saw that demo, they thought we were aping the tea party; they thought it was a hit piece on the Tea Party. But these movements tend to happen. There have been nationalist and nativist movements many times through history.

"As we developed these opposing groups," Levine continued, "the Founders versus the Vox Populi, it was interesting to see this play out in real time, so that the fictional movements we're creating that are set in this heightened past are almost being duplicated in reality."

The polarizing views in the game mirror real-life partisan perception of the BioShock games, Levine said, with people on both sides vilifying them for opposing reasons. Infinite demonstrates a possible outcome of such political extremes, with Columbia seceding from McKinley-era America and devolving into violent drama. "I hope the real-life movements don't head to the same place, though," Levine said. "I'm not going anywhere nice, I'll tell you that much."

Levine: BioShock Infinite won't favor close-range weapons, Objectivism

user posted image

QUOTE
Ken Levine and the team at Irrational Games are switching things up for BioShock Infinite -- instead of being based on the Objectivist society of Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged, Infinite is aiming for more of an Erik Larson's Devil in the White City feel, with a focus on physics rather than gene splicing. Irrational is also switching up some of the most recognizable gameplay from the first two BioShock games, namely the ability to beat them almost entirely with the shotgun and Electro Bolt, Levine told PlayStation.Blog.

"One of the first things we did when we started on BioShock Infinite was to draw a graph with y and z axes, and to say that one of those axes was the number of enemies in an encounter and the other was the range of those enemies," Levine said. "In the original BioShock, the entire game lived in one corner of that graph – few enemies, all at close range - so the Electro Bolt and shotgun were perfect. BioShock Infinite is going to have much greater ranges and, potentially, far more enemies, so we're greatly increasing the spectrum of encounters that are possible, and that requires the player use a broader set of tools."

That sounds like a challenge if we've ever heard one. You're on, Levine. You're on.

2K Australia assisting Irrational with BioShock: Infinite

user posted imageuser posted image

QUOTE
2K Australia, which is based in Canberra, is helping a developer with a BioShock title again. 2K Australia had assisted 2K Marin with BioShock 2, and are now helping Ken Levine's Irrational Games (formerly 2K Boston) with BioShock Infinite.

Interestingly, 2K Australia had been assisting 2K Marin with the XCOM first person shooter reboot. XCOM has recently been delayed til 2013. One must wonder if 2K Australia is free to work on BioShock Infinite due to the XCOM delay, or if the XCOM delay is due to a prioritization of BioShock Infinite over XCOM.

BioShock: Infinite is due to be released in 2012 on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

2K Australia is 2K Australia again and is working on BioShock Infinite, Levine confirms

user posted image

QUOTE
So we don't run the risk of burying the lede, let's start with the news: MVC Pacific reports that the Canberra, Australia-based arm of developer 2K Marin is once again known as 2K Australia and is now working with former sister studio Irrational Games on BioShock Infinite. When asked for comment, Irrational boss man Ken Levine said, "We had a number of open positions on BioShock Infinite. When we found out our former sister studio 2K Australia was becoming available, we thought they would perfectly fill those roles."

He added, "If every decision was this easy..."

Now, some history. In 2007, after Irrational Games was purchased by Take-Two and just before the release of the original BioShock, the studio was split apart and renamed 2K Boston and 2K Australia. Since then, 2K Boston has become Irrational Games, once again, but 2K Australia hasn't had it so easy.

After working with 2K Marin on BioShock 2, it was decided that 2K Australia would lose its name and become a part of 2K Marin (which is a tad geographically misleading, no?) and help develop the XCOM reboot. Less than a year later, the 2K Australia studio head Martin Slater resigned and just last month it was reported that 15 employees were cut from the studio.

And now, over four years after the creation of 2K Australia, 2K Australia is back and once again working with Levine's team in Boston. We've reached out to 2K Games for any additional commentary on the shuffle and whether or not 2K Australia has any more involvement in XCOM. But while we're waiting, we wanted to say "welcome back" to the team in Canberra. Oh, and enough navel gazing. BioShock Infinite isn't going to make itself.

Bioshock's Ken Levine Calls 2011 'A Year To Be Proud Of'

QUOTE
Though he's working hard on Bioshock Infinite with his cohort at Irrational Games, creative director Ken Levine poke his head up and found himself glad with what he saw. Levine told Eurogamer that 2011 was the best year in the video gaming since 2007.

"I always make time for games," Levine said. "That's important. If you're not playing games you're compromising your ability as a game developer to make good games.”

"It's been an interesting year. It's the best year since - and I'm not just saying this because of my game - 2007. A lot of great games, like Portal, came out that year. It's the best year in a very long time. There have been a ton of games I've been playing. I play more games right now mostly because there's just so much good stuff to play."

This year saw big-name titles like Skyrim, Portal 2, Uncharted 3, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Battlefield 3, Batman: Arkham City, Gears of War 3, and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, alongside portable and indie hits like Infinity Blade II, Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, E.Y.E., Bastion, and The Binding of Issac. Levine said that the industry should be proud of itself.

"[2011] is a year to be proud of our industry. It's a year to be proud of the Uncharted guys. It's a year to be proud of Epic. It's a year to be proud of the Call of Duty guys. It's a year to be proud of everybody because people are delivering this year in a way the industry hasn't delivered in a very long time."

Give yourselves a slow cap, ladies and gentlemen.

BioShock Infinite to include tougher '1999 Mode'

user posted image

QUOTE
BioShock Infinite is gonna hurt you like it's 1999. Developer Irrational Games announced the "1999 Mode" for the upcoming RPG slash FPS this morning, and it appears to go beyond just messing with health stats for a more challenging game experience.

"I'm an old school gamer. We wanted to make sure we were taking into account the play styles of gamers like me," said Irrational's creative director Ken Levine. "So we went straight to the horse's mouth by asking them, on our website, a series of questions about how they play our games."

Levine continued, "94.6 percent of respondents indicated that upgrade choices enhanced their BioShock gameplay experience; however, 56.8 percent indicated that being required to make permanent decisions about their character would have made the game even better."

The 1999 Mode will include unnamed tweaks and features that won't exist in the standard BioSchock Infinite experience. It will also "feature demanding weapon, power, and health management," along with a "Game Over" screen if the player lacks the resources for a respawn. The company is unlikely to cover incidental damages to property caused by playing 1999 Mode.

For a look at a roughed up version of Elizabeth from the newly revealed mode, head past the jump.

Levine keeps BioShock Infinite team 'in the dark' on story

QUOTE
Ken Levine is keeping the narrative to BioShock Infinite under tight control in order to observe his team as they come across its twists and turns - a reaction you can't get "a second time."

He admits there's a "frustration on the team" because he hasn't documented the story for them to digest in one go, but he won't do it because it's "not the way we present stuff to the gamer."

In truth such a document would be nothing but a "blueprint for us to build the game story from," not the actual story itself. Large sections of the story he keeps under wraps.

He wants to preserve and observe his team, "so I can see their reactions. Keeping people virgins to that content is really important because you never get that reaction from someone a second time," Levine tells PSM3.

"I think (it's) a frustration on the team here. I don't want them to know the game story, and they want a document from me that tells them the whole game story."

"I'm not going to do that. That's not the way we present stuff to the gamer. We don't ship a document. The story is only relevant in terms of how you present it, not the details of what it is," he explained.

"I don't want to send out a document which is the game story, because to me that's not the game story - that's an outline or a blueprint for us to build the game story from."

BioShock Infinite releases on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC later this year.

In the RPS “When is BioShock Infinite Out?” sweepstakes, Jim Chose Oct 17th, John Oct 18th, Alec Oct 20th, Adam Oct 21st, and I swung in with September 19th 7019. It turns out none of us have particularly well-defined psychic powers, and I was WAY off: mark October 19th down on your calendar as “National BioShock Infinite release day”. Bioshock Infinite’s Motorised Patriot is evil robot George Washington with a gatling gun

user posted image
QUOTE
I didn’t think I’d find myself writing that headline when I woke up this morning. There are big ideas behind the Bioshock games. The wars for Rapture and Colombia are battles between ideologies fought with bullets, each set in a fascinating, twisted dystopia. Never mind all that, though. No matter how smart your game is, there’s always room for evil robot George Washington with a gatling gun.

The “motorised patriot” was revealed on G4TV, with comments from Ken Levine. “He’s completely fearless,” Levine said. “He doesn’t have a sense of self-preservation, so he’ll just keep coming at you and coming at you.” Just like George Washington.

Killing a motorised patriot will drop his massive weapon, called a Pepper Mill, worthy loot for a dangerous foe. “These are enemies that are used to not just be more powerful, but to augment the abilities of the more traditional BioShock enemies,” Levine told G4TV. “You’re going to come across them in certain areas of the game, and they’re going to provide a really unique challenge.”

“Unique challenge” is right. I don’t recall fighting an evil robot George Washington with a gatling gun before, but games are mad, so it may have slipped my mind. Here’s some concept art of the Pepper Mill and, below that, some concept art of the motorised Patriot, which would make a great Doctor Who villain.

BioShock Infinite delayed to 2013
QUOTE
BioShock Infinite will not ship this October as previously announced. Take-Two Interactive today announced that Irrational Games' upcoming first-person shooter will now release on February 26, 2013.

In a statement, Irrational Games creative director Ken Levine explained that the extra development time will afford the studio an opportunity to pursue new game ideas.

"When we announced the release date of BioShock Infinite in March, we felt pretty good about the timing," he said. "Since then, we've uncovered opportunities to make Infinite into something even more extraordinary. Therefore, to give our talented team the time they need to deliver the best Infinite possible, we've decided to move the game's release to February."

In an update to the Irrational Games website, Levine also explained that BioShock Infinite will not be shown at this summer's Electronic Entertainment Expo and GamesCom.

"That way, the next time you see our game, it will be essentially the product we intend to put in the box. Preparing for these events takes time away from development," he explained.

When BioShock Infinite does ship, it will do so with great sales expectations. In August 2011, one analyst suggested the game would be a significant financial boon for Take- Two, saying it could ship 4.9 million copies.

BioShock Infinite is set in Columbia, a flying city in an early alternate 20th century where utopian ideals have given way to chaos in a sea of weaponry, plasmid-like powers, and political upheaval. Into this mess steps the game's protagonist, Booker DeWitt, a former member of the feared Pinkerton National Detective Agency, which was America's largest security company in the late 19th century. According to GameSpot's latest preview, DeWitt will enter a world where steampunk robots have replaced horses and people, and where crazed citizens foment revolution with strange powers--and lots of guns.

I'd like to think that it was because of the single player were done.

Or maybe because Ken Levine gonna retire after this game is out like Bioware's founder & Cliff Bleszinski did, so those guys didn't want to stick with Irrational Games.

That would suck, seriously, if Ken Levine gonna leave after this. 2K might as well be dead then.

I think Cliff Bleszinski left because he didnt really like Epic going towards making game engines more than making games, while the doctors are getting really stressed up with EA and TORtanic's failure. One of the doctors opposed since the beginning on the idea of making TORtanic a free to play.

Not really, 2K games still have MAFIA series, and I am really looking forward to MAFIA III.

But if you were referring to Irrational Games, then perhaps you are right.

Better delay than releasing broken game right. This is their second delay and still bug fixing i believe.

bug fixes b4 launch is better than bug fixes after launch or day 1 patch which most AAA title does nowadays.
i support their delay to have less bug during launch.

can't wait to get this beauty of floating island.

Delayed to March? sweat.gif I was just telling myself February isn't that far... sleep.gif

Just heard about the no MP news, nearly a month old news. Respect! Bioshock 2's MP was so unnecessary. It was put it because there had to be MP, just like other games.

The last time I played a 'big' game with no real MP is "Metro 2033".

PC SPECIFICATIONS FOR BIOSHOCK INFINITE ANNOUNCED!
January 15, 2013
Fifteen years ago, Irrational Games got its start making PC games, and the PC gaming experience has always been near and dear to our hearts. But it’s been a long time since we released the original BioShock, and PC gamers have come to expect a lot more for their money. So it’s understandable that you might be wondering: Will BioShock Infinite treat you right? Read on to find out what’s in store for the PC version, and you be the judge.

Controls

One of the big differences between PC and console gaming is the availability of a mouse and keyboard. You expect it, so we’re happy to confirm that the PC options screens let you remap all the default action bindings, with both primary and alternate bindings available simultaneously. Speaking of mice, we’ve made sure not to alter the sensitivity of high-end gaming mice by applying artificial mouse smoothing, and you can control sensitivity or toggle mouse acceleration in the options screen.

What’s that you’re mumbling to yourself? You prefer a console controller? Don’t worry, traitor, your secret is safe with us. There are three separate controller layouts (Default, Marksman, and Retro), each of which support loads of configuration options. You can tweak aim assist, sensitivity, vibration, and look inversion. Are you a left-handed player? Go ahead and revel in your genetic superiority because all controller layouts support multiple analog-stick configurations: Default (Look on right stick, Move on left), Southpaw (opposite of Default), Legacy (for those GoldenEye fans), and Legacy Southpaw. And for those who truly yearn for an old-school feel, or who use special controllers for medical reasons, we even let you swap the left or right analog stick with the D-pad.

All UI's in the game are controllable via either keyboard and mouse or the console controller, and you can switch back and forth between the two input paradigms without ever pausing the game.

Graphics

I know, I know. Why discuss Controls first when we all know that Graphics Options is the first place you’ll be visiting? Because patience is a virtue. And it’s worth the wait.

This time around, we’ve fully embraced widescreen gaming. With our implementation of “horizontal plus” widescreen support, the wider you go, the more you’ll see of Columbia’s gorgeous vistas. And for the true aficionado, we support multi-monitor gaming with AMD Eyefinity, NVIDIA Surround, and Matrox TripleHead2Go. You’ll also have separate controls for aspect ratio, resolution, and display mode (fullscreen, windowed, and fullscreen windowed).

We have six different graphics presets, from “Very Low” to “Ultra,” providing a wide range of quality-versus-performance options. Gamers who want to tweak those further can switch to a Custom configuration, which gives you control over anti-aliasing, texture detail, texture filtering, dynamic shadows, post-processing, light shafts, ambient occlusion, and object level of detail. Many of these options have setting levels that are only available under DX11.

That’s right—BioShock Infinite is a DX11 game. Though you only need DX10-compatible hardware to play, having a DX11 graphics card gives you access to contact-hardening dynamic shadows, diffusion depth of field, high definition ambient occlusion and optimized antialiasing. Each of these features was developed in close collaboration with AMD’s graphics experts to take maximum advantage of modern DX11 hardware.

Finally, to show off all of that glorious PC pixel-pushing power, we’re shipping with unadulterated, full-resolution textures right in the box. You may not enjoy the three-DVD install, but we hope you will appreciate the jaw-dropping detail our amazing team of artists lavished on the game.

Gaming Wherever, Whenever

So you have a sweet gaming rig at home, but what about when you’re on the road for work, taking a break between classes, or visiting your relatives? We know that you appreciate being able to bring your gaming with you and may not always have a beefy machine available. We’ve worked hard to include graphics options that scale both up and down, so you can play BioShock Infinite even on less powerful setups with integrated graphics.

Speaking of bringing your gaming with you, did I mention that the game is on Steam, with Steam Cloud support? You’ll be able to get your BioShock Infinite fix no matter where you are, and your saved progress travels with you.

Likewise, if you just bought an 80-inch TV and prefer to take your PC gaming to the couch (or is it a “love seat”?), we’ve got you covered with support for Steam’s Big Picture mode. Heck, with a wireless controller and a good insurance plan, you can even play from your Jacuzzi.

Requirements

Will BioShock Infinite run on your gaming setup? We certainly hope so! So, without further ado, here are the PC requirements for BioShock Infinite:

MINIMUM

OS: Windows Vista Service Pack 2 32-bit
Processor: Intel Core 2 DUO 2.4 GHz / AMD Athlon X2 2.7 GHz
Memory: 2 GB
Hard Drive: 20 GB free
Video Card: DirectX10 Compatible ATI Radeon HD 3870 / NVIDIA 8800 GT / Intel HD 3000 Integrated Graphics
Video Card Memory: 512 MB
Sound Card: DirectX Compatible
RECOMMENDED

OS: Windows 7 Service Pack 1 64-bit
Processor: Quad Core Processor
Memory: 4 GB
Hard Drive: 30 GB free
Video Card: DirectX11 Compatible, AMD Radeon HD 6950 / NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560
Video Card Memory: 1024 MB
Sound Card: DirectX Compatible
OTHER REQUIREMENTS & SUPPORTS

Steam account required for game activation and installation. Initial installation requires one-time internet connection for Steam authentication and Platform Update For Windows Vista (KB 971644 required on Vista only for DirectX 11); software installations required (included with the game) include Steam Client, Microsoft DirectX Runtime, Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable 2008 SP1, and Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable 2010 SP1.

Conclusion

If I have any regrets, it’s that there are always more features that we wanted to add than we had time to implement. For example, some of the most requested PC features these days are in-game V-Sync and FOV adjustment controls. Unfortunately, given our tight sc—wait, never mind. We added those too!

Still have questions? Then send them to community@irrationalgames.com and I'll have answers in a separate post next week!

We’re incredibly excited about the quality of BioShock Infinite on the PC platform, and we can’t wait for you to experience it for yourself on March 26th. Secure your copy at www.preordernow.com!

BioShock Infinite character 'highly altered' after the religion talk

Though Irrational Games co-founder Ken Levine says he isn't a religious person, he takes religion's place in Bioshock Infinite seriously. During development, his conversations with religious employees at Irrational created a major shift for one of Infinite's characters.

"One of the characters in the game was highly altered based upon some very interesting conversations I had with people on the team who came from a very religious background, and I was able to understand they were kind of upset about something," Levine tells OPM.

"What I said to them was, 'I'm not going to change anything to get your approval, but I think I understand what you're saying and I think I can do something that's going to make the story better, based on what you said.' So I did that, and I'm grateful for them bringing in their perspective. The last thing I wanted to do was change something because it offends somebody, but the thing they pointed out was making it a lesser story."

Infinite offers an intriguing blend of religion, philosophy and science, as we discovered last year. The city of Columbia is presented as a real-world heaven and its founder is a God-like prophet. The entire game hinges on the philosophy of objectivism and it addresses the pseudo-science of "the ether" and resurrection. That leaves plenty to talk about, religious or not.

The religion conversation for Infinite mirrors one Levine remembers during the original BioShock's development. "I think that we had a similar conversation about Bioshock 1," Levine says. "It involves infanticide, I don't think there's a larger taboo in the world. There were people who were very nervous about that. We didn't have that because we thought it would be cool. My feeling was if it's not just there to be exploitative, if it's true to the story and you're telling something that you think is honest, then everything has a place."

BioShock Infinite will be preceded by an ebook called Mind in Revolt, intended to offer greater detail about the world of Columbia and its inhabitants before the events of the game begin. "After reading the e-book, players will have a better understanding of BioShock Infinite's world, the struggle between its factions, and the motivations of key characters, like rebel leader Daisy Fitzroy, without spoiling the mysteries of BioShock Infinite," Irrational's Joe Fielder, who wrote the book with creative director Ken Levine, explained in the announcement.

The ebook will be released February 12 for Kindle, priced at $2.99. Amazon pre-orders of BioShock Infinite will be entitled to a free copy. All pre-orders worldwide will also get the in-game Industrial Revolution Pack, with in-game gear, currency, and the Industrial Revolution puzzle game.

Freebie for preorder Pipu

i love the original clothes. this is juz like a schoolgirl clothes doh.gif

seriously, ppl should take this things lightly. its juz a game and its not real and it wasn't meant to be aligned with real worlds.

Alot of games are ruined by these fanatics that everything must be covered up and only revealing the eyes. Otherwise we will be accused of branding woman as sex symbol. They are more concerned about cleavage and tits than gory, exploding head and shooting.

nope, never heard of it.

but i do know they changed some character models a bit and some background stories (especially the ones concerned with sensitive religious thingy)

in fact, PC version's game file size will have extra 10GB or so to accommodate high res texture. smile.gif

BioShock Infinite Season Pass Announced

user posted image
QUOTE
While you're probably not shocked to hear it, Irrational Games has today announced that production of DLC for its forthcoming BioShock Infinite is already well under way and that the BioShock Infinite Season Pass is a thing that frugal fans should be aware of.

Basically, the in-the-works-DLC includes three all-new add-on packs that will provide "hours" of additional gameplay and continue your journey in Columbia with new stories, characters, abilities and weapons.
The BioShock Infinite Season Pass will be available on March 26, 2013 when the game is planned to launch, and provide nearly $30.00 of add-on content for $19.99 (PSN, PC) or 1,600 Microsoft Points (Xbox LIVE) – a savings of more than 30%. The Season Pass will include all three add-on packs, and can be pre-ordered today through www.preordernow.com or at a participating retailer.

As pointed out by Irrational, those who purchase the BioShock Infinite Season Pass will also receive the Early Bird Special Pack for free. This pack contains four pieces of exclusive gear, a Machine Gun Damage Upgrade, a Pistol Damage Upgrade, a gold skin for both weapons and five Infusion bottles that allow players to increase their health, their shield durability or their ability to use Vigors by increasing the quantity of Salts they can carry.

In addition, those who pre-order BioShock Infinite itself will receive the Industrial Revolution Pack for free. This pack grants exclusive access to three in-game gear items that boost combat abilities, $500 bonus to in-game currency, five lock picks and the Industrial Revolution puzzle game, which unlocks stories of Columbia and allows players to pledge their allegiance to the Vox Populi or Founders through Facebook.

So, basically, even though you can't start playing BioShock Infinite until the end of March, you can start spending your money on it TODAY! Check out the latest "Lamb of Columbia" for the game above before hitting up the comments to let everyone else know what you think about the game's approach to the Season Pass.

blue coins is like a currency you can use to purchase on GG. everytime you purchase a game on GG, you will get blue coins and the amount is 5% of current purchase.

from what I see, if you don't have the 20% discount for GG, better preorder from GMG. $44.99 + 2 Steamworks game + $19.99 for season pass on Steam. some of GG bonus games is not Steamworks.

but the GMG offer is valid until 25 February (the 25% off offer, not sure about the free games).

Current conversion is not $1 = RM3.10? Calculated should just be RM189... Wow RM so small already  sweat.gif. Or is it any other changes? tongue.gif

3.10 is live rates.

local bank credit card will charge a bit higher than the live rates for profit.

The Steam offer is only good if it hits the third tier with a free Xcom game. What does the Season Pass gives? DLC for SP only right? Cuz this game only has SP campaign, like Bioshock 1

Well i for one like SP games more than MP. I like MP games mostly like DOTA2 but only if you are playing with 5 friends against other teams. It's darn stupid to join a random game. You get pwnz becos your random team consists of not so experienced players against a team of good players.

I dont mind SP only games as long as it's good. Like Bioshock 1. But the way the publishers are pushing pre-orders on this game is a telling sign about something.

very tempting pre-order offer...but there's one thing i would like to confirm, if there's anyone who can let me know...

from this website: http://steamdrm.flibitijibibo.com/index.ph...he_Big_DRM_List

I can see that bioshock 1 is using secuROM (inert) and bioshock 2 is still using secuROM, so is this means that secuROM will still be installed if i select to pre=order from GMG?

planning to get pre-order from GMG but not sure if which game should i choose for the second free game...

blame the A:CM incident. bcoz of that, many people avoid preorders altogether, so they need to re-attract their potential customers to preorder the game.

yup, still use Securom. but GMG copy can activate on Steam, so it will have 2 DRM, Steam and Securom.

LOL it's either this or Tomb Raider.. But TR gameplay seems bit short.. Still a gamble. It could turn out Bioshock Infinite suxs? tongue.gif

$44.99 sure tempting.. but I would order it directly if they give me the Season Pass. Don't mind bout the free games :S

Err.. so i registered on GMG.. but someone mentioned can pre-order Season Pass with discount? How?

i was surprised that the promo is still on too...shouldnt have to rush to buy it that day...

also those on windows 8, you may or may not experience the same problem as i do when playing bioshock 1...

after the initial cut scenes, there's no more sound effect, then i sort of like got stuck in the "capsule" after going under water, the place where something suppose to attack the capsule...

will try again tonight if i still get stuck, but the sound problem seems to be persistent...checked online, they suggested updating to the latest realtek driver, while some solve the problem by just plug in a microphone...

Quite disappointed by the fact they aren't bringing in any. No love for diehard fans. Ah well, I'll just go buy the art book then.

I hope so. Though as far as I remember, only 1 game didn't manage to complete all the tier rewards.

It's actually about the same length as the original Bioshock. Also, it is open-world just not "GTA-style open world"

That's really sad.. fortunately i have room limitation and not really a fan of physical stuff. Still not too late to get it for $44.99 from GMG with 2 FREE games.

Man.. i'm kinda itchy on getting the "season pass". 20% off from $19.99 with these:
QUOTE
More Game, More Guns, More Power!

Extend the narrative and adventure with the BioShock Infinite Season Pass.

Receive three add-ons for the price of two

Get Day 1 bonuses with The Early Bird Special Pack, only available to Season Pass holders

    New Stories

    New Characters

    New Weapons

Continue the journey in the sky-city of Columbia, with new locations,  new characters, and new weapons. The instant bonus includes four pieces of exclusive gear, weapon upgrades and skins, and five Infusion bottles.

It's south american prices. They get some games cheaper---notably if published by 2K or Capcom.

And I'm pretty sure RU version is cheaper.

You are buying 3 DLC for price of 2. It's story content DLC. I'd say buy now to support them. Only $16 after discount. If cos u can always buy years later.

yeah, i know.

the thing about sequel is that, it tends to get pretty boring if you're revisiting the same setting especially when the sequel is released only a year or two after the original.

good thing irrational changed the setting to a sky city with a brand new storyline.

Yeah. That's the thing. It gets boring if they don't come up with something new or innovative. Being underwater and now the sky is a huge difference. Ken is pretty imaginative.. I used to dream playing a Might and Magic game in the floating city of Archangels tongue.gif

Unlike AC.. they literally milk the franchise dry and it's really boring. Wonder what's next for Irrational team. Probably multiplayer? They have yet to do any games with that if not mistaken. But if that's their direction.. well i can't say i'm interested though.

Darn.. i can't preload sad.gif. GMG site having issue:

QUOTE
Site Issues + Key Distribution & Order Processing!

Hi all,

Due to the huge demand for Bioshock infinite over night the site is currently as of 9AM 23rd March having some issues processing orders as well as some other stability issues. Rest assured we are working our hardest to fix these problems, and we'll send out an alert just as soon as we have.

Please note:

- Key distribution for Bioshock Infinite will unfortunately take a little longer than expected, do not worry; your key will be delivered to you as soon as possible!

- If you have made an order and you are stuck on processing screen, leaving the page is fine; your order will still be processed.

We thank you for patience while we resolve these issues!

Best Regards,

GMG Customer Service

Steam russia? RM80? while that is tempting but i wouldn't take the risk. region and currencies always have advantages. i'm not sure how you purchased it.. previously i had someone try purchasing TR for me on steam but they can't buy as gifts..

yeah, some games (if not most) are region restricted, so its a pain in the arse to play the game back in malaysia.
