Buyers cry ‘fowl’ over Ramadan price-gouging
August 11, 2010

user posted image

ALOR SETAR, Aug 11 — Muslims who start fasting today to mark Ramadan are left fuming as traders resort to profiteering by hiking the price of chicken.

A Bernama check at the Alor Setar central market and Jitra wet market today found that the price of chicken had been increased by 30 to 50 sen per kg.

Saniah Ahmad,42, who was met at the market was shocked by the big increase in the price of chicken.

“The price of chicken has increased from RM6.50 to RM7 per kg. I find this increase way too much,” she said adding authorities should act fast to protect consumers.

Another consumer Che Pi Hamid,46, urged authorities to monitor the price of essential goods to protect consumers against unscrupulous traders. He said traders usually come up with a host of reasons to justify the hike in price of essential goods during festivals.

Meanwhile, chicken seller Abdul Shukur Darus,33, said he had to hike the chicken price by 30 sen per kg as suppliers had done so.

“I don’t have much choice and have to sell chicken at RM7 per kg although the price is high,” said Shukur.

Fellow chicken seller Wan Ahmad Fauzi Wan Ismail,35, said it was normal for the price of daily goods to cost more during Ramadan.

“We are still selling chicken at RM7 per kg but some traders are selling them at RM7.50 today,” he said.

A check at Jitra market found that the chicken price had increased from RM5.70-RM6 to RM6.50 per kg today.

Kedah Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry director Salleh Ma’amor said chicken was not a controlled item and its price was based on supply and demand.

“We expect the price of chicken to increase by RM1 per kg during Ramadan. Chicken will be made a price controlled item two weeks before Aidilfitri,” he added. — Bernama

this is true, but only until certain extent. the way i see it, the supplies are controlled by a certain group of people. it's not like during ramadhan suddenly supply shrunk, or demand increase exponentially. as a matter of fact, demand should be reduced since people are eating less... so price should go down... it's well known that cainis always look after their own, hence the reduced price during CNY. as for puasa & raya? well, all excuse will be thrown about for the price increase. after all, people will still buy, right right? business maa... ada can get more untung, of course people will do it

pasar ramadhan panggang ayam percik like nobody's business. plus you can't control the supply of chicken per se in the short run. stop killing your chickens and let them age? freeze the raw chicken meat? no profit in that. it is called demand-pull inflation for a reason. remember the population demand too, chinese only make up 20% or so during cny compared to the 70% during raya.

i'm not gonna retract from anything. if you guys go to the pasar/hypermart often enough to notice the change in price then you'll see as I see. I got a relative supplying ayam also. that's how I know it la. ayam the main supplier is the cainis. they control the anak ayam supply, the food, and the borong for the adult one. haish people should only talk if they know about them, if not make yourself look rather foolish smile.gif

nope, chicken seller plenty of meleis, but rarer/supplier = majority cainis.

and pleaselah, why so fast to tag people with racist tag? i've been saying as it is since my first post in this thread. some of you are implying wrongly. i didnt imply anything. I say it as it is. it's not my fault if my knowledge extends to those things beyond your comprehension/experience

see you imply that i said cainis is taking advantage on maleis.....

what i simply mention there is during raya & puasa the supplier (which are cainis in majority) will jack up the price. so basically you want me to omit the word cainis there and simply say

supplier will jack up price for raya & puasa?

Chicken Among Price-Control Goods for New Year
MALAYSIA - Live chicken, standard chicken, super chicken and chicken eggs (grade A, B, C) are among eleven products listed as price control goods for the Chinese New Year celebration from 10-21 February.

The price of live chicken was set between RM5.85 to RM6.10 a kilogram in the peninsular, RM6.30 to RM8.70 in Sabah, Sarawak and RM6.30 in Labuan, while Standard chicken prices range from RM6.90 to RM7.20 a kilogram in the peninsular, RM9.30 to RM10.30 in Sabah, Sarawak and RM9.30 in Labuan.

Pork was also among the products listed, Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced Wednesday.

According to Bernama.com, Ismail Sabri said it was the first time pork was listed under price control goods.

"The price of pork has been set as RM14 in the peninsular, RM10 to RM16 in Sabah and Sarawak and RM20 in Labuan," Mr Sabri said.

He added that since pork was included in the list for the first time, pork sellers must get a special licence issued by the ministry, for free.

have you actually been to the pasar/hypermart on weeks heading to CNY? what is written on paper is one thing, the other is to experience it yourself. on second thought, have you actually ever buy raw chicken yourself?

Yes, I have. Do you have any evidence at all that it's at RM4-5 besides your allegations?

I think it is just a supply and demand issue.

In big towns and cities nowadays the non-Muslims also like to visit the Muslim stalls. You don't have the same thing for Chinese New Year.

Also one very major difference to note, the biggest event for Chinese New Year is the reunion dinner. Usually there is chicken served.

There might be higher demand for chickens but it is only for one dinner.

Compare that to the demand for chickens for an entire month of Ramadhan. And the open houses.

Chinese open houses during Chinese New Year usually have servings of tidbits. Whereas Malay open houses.....wow...so much food. Satay, curry ayam, rendang ayam, lemang, etc. etc.

dagnarus, I think what you say doesn't hold water.

— Bernama

Ex-Farm Prices of Broiler in West Malaysia

The farm prices for broilers during CNY 2009 was RM4.40 starting from Jan 16 2009. I think CNY was around Jan 29. Prices dropped to RM3.80 after CNY ended on Feb 11 2009.

Hari Raya 2008 was end of Oct 2008. If I average the cost of the listed price for the month of Oct, it's around RM4.47. Ranging from a high of RM5.10 starting early Aug, with the price being reduced in early Oct to RM4.30 and dipping to a low of RM4 in the middle of Oct.

You can compare the prices during each holiday season and see that there is no conspiracy to lower the prices for CNY.

Oh well, I've said what need to be said from a consumer point of view. Anyhow, thanks for all the links soothsayer, and for being civil throughout too. I guess by these evidents, my accusation of a lower price for CNY do seem unjustified. All I can say is, just wait for the next CNY and keep an eye on the chicken sold @ hypermarts, just for the lulz....

Just saw an advertisement in the star yesterday that Tesco (I think) is selling whole chicken at RM5.69 per kg, and I was at Carrefour yesterday and they were selling whole, dressed chicken at RM5.25 per kg but with the head and feet attached.

Not too bad considering that the prices for food have inflated like crazy these few years.

Added on September 8, 2010, 1:07 pmGiant's advertisement in today's Sun lists whole chicken at 4.89 per kg.
