QUOTE(automan5891 @ Aug 11 2010, 04:21 PM) http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/malaysi...-price-gouging/ Haahahahahahahah!!Buyers cry ‘fowl’ over Ramadan price-gouging August 11, 2010 ![]() ALOR SETAR, Aug 11 — Muslims who start fasting today to mark Ramadan are left fuming as traders resort to profiteering by hiking the price of chicken. A Bernama check at the Alor Setar central market and Jitra wet market today found that the price of chicken had been increased by 30 to 50 sen per kg. Saniah Ahmad,42, who was met at the market was shocked by the big increase in the price of chicken. “The price of chicken has increased from RM6.50 to RM7 per kg. I find this increase way too much,” she said adding authorities should act fast to protect consumers. Another consumer Che Pi Hamid,46, urged authorities to monitor the price of essential goods to protect consumers against unscrupulous traders. He said traders usually come up with a host of reasons to justify the hike in price of essential goods during festivals. Meanwhile, chicken seller Abdul Shukur Darus,33, said he had to hike the chicken price by 30 sen per kg as suppliers had done so. “I don’t have much choice and have to sell chicken at RM7 per kg although the price is high,” said Shukur. Fellow chicken seller Wan Ahmad Fauzi Wan Ismail,35, said it was normal for the price of daily goods to cost more during Ramadan. “We are still selling chicken at RM7 per kg but some traders are selling them at RM7.50 today,” he said. A check at Jitra market found that the chicken price had increased from RM5.70-RM6 to RM6.50 per kg today. Kedah Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry director Salleh Ma’amor said chicken was not a controlled item and its price was based on supply and demand. “We expect the price of chicken to increase by RM1 per kg during Ramadan. Chicken will be made a price controlled item two weeks before Aidilfitri,” he added. — Bernama |

Ex-Farm Prices of Broiler in West Malaysia
The farm prices for broilers during CNY 2009 was RM4.40 starting from Jan 16 2009. I think CNY was around Jan 29. Prices dropped to RM3.80 after CNY ended on Feb 11 2009. Hari Raya 2008 was end of Oct 2008. If I average the cost of the listed price for the month of Oct, it's around RM4.47. Ranging from a high of RM5.10 starting early Aug, with the price being reduced in early Oct to RM4.30 and dipping to a low of RM4 in the middle of Oct. You can compare the prices during each holiday season and see that there is no conspiracy to lower the prices for CNY. |

Oh well, I've said what need to be said from a consumer point of view. Anyhow, thanks for all the links soothsayer, and for being civil throughout too. I guess by these evidents, my accusation of a lower price for CNY do seem unjustified. All I can say is, just wait for the next CNY and keep an eye on the chicken sold @ hypermarts, just for the lulz....

Just saw an advertisement in the star yesterday that Tesco (I think) is selling whole chicken at RM5.69 per kg, and I was at Carrefour yesterday and they were selling whole, dressed chicken at RM5.25 per kg but with the head and feet attached.
Not too bad considering that the prices for food have inflated like crazy these few years. Added on September 8, 2010, 1:07 pmGiant's advertisement in today's Sun lists whole chicken at 4.89 per kg. This post has been edited by thesoothsayer: Sep 8 2010, 01:07 PM |
