wah azxel, you tested the fiesta. the golf, both are double clutches. So what exactly are you looking at. The golf is a totally different level here and Polo and fiesta probably not side by side either. Cheapest is fiesta. then polo and then golf. this is also what i had in mind. but by stages. Fiesta first, get poison with double clutches. Then from polo 77kw 7 speed dsg to a whopping 1.4 golf 118kw. and ultimately the 155kw golf GTI. but by then im too old for a fast car like Golf GTI. Afraid that might end up in a passat or a peugeot 508
*
lol... not sure what I want yet... that's why still looking around la.. for a replacement for next year tongue.gif

I like how the Fiesta looks but not really impressed by it's driving experience. I think that the Golf is way much better in terms of overall driving experience.
Gear changing and smoothness definitely much better on the Golf but as someone pointed out (think it was in the autoworld forum), 160k for a hatch is kinda steep so that's why I'm gonna test out a few more first sweat.gif I also heard about the Fiesta's delay in car delivery.. they're pushing their nationwide launch from this month to next month as well...

We're never too old for these cars (not sure how old you are tongue.gif ). The Passat most certainly looks like a great car. It's another car that'll get you a lot of speeding fines on the highway. Problem is I like hatches or small 4-door cars but the gf already has a Mini so getting a proper sedan like a Passat, 508, Mondeo or 3 series would make sense.

Yeah I asked for freebies as well but hard to get them. Usually the freebies come from VW Group itself hence the dealer only sells them on behalf of VW. I wanted a shirt tongue.gif

I think would wait a bit before deciding... not really an early adopter as I've had countless bad experience with a lot of 1st gen stuff I buy sad.gif
Will want to check out and see what problems folks face as well...

On the bright side, this really isn't the 1st gen, here maybe but it has been out for almost a year already in other countries and Singapore. Hopefully we can learn from their experience as well

I missed the September batch hence it should be here in October. Yes, I chose white because I drive on the highway 80% of the time so any other collies and the front bonnet paint chips due to the small stones and pebbles are very obvious. I wanted red initially but the red for the Golf didn't seem as nice as it looked on the MkV GTI's. The dealer mentioned that it is a different shade of red and not the tornado red.
*
haha. yea the red looks kinda awful. my test drive unit was the red... sweat.gif i hear the black also not nice unlike the GTi's black which has red trimming and lines around.

Is this golf Tsi is really worth to get? The dsg transmission seems to be abit different from normal AT transmission, when shift to D,the car won't move by itself,we need to control the pedal to move the car right?
*
worth to get or not it really depends on your needs/views/opinion...

With a lot of features that rivals (and is much more than) the already feature packed Peugeot 308THP which is priced at RM130+k plus the new Golf TSI has
- 7 air bags (safety wise, I think not many other brands at this price range can rival this)
- 7 speed (100km/h+ @ 2k rpm kinda blew me away)
- really really really smooth gear change
- gorgeous headlamps that moves / follows your steering wheel

Besides being almost silent (I thought I was driving some hybrid car), on 'D' the car won't really move much by itself (it will still move though but just a bit).. you just tap a bit and it moves.

The Pug 308 Turbo is RM113,888 BTW. I was seriously considering the Golf but at 160k it would stretch my budget to the max so I decided to go for the Pug instead. At least have some spare cash left for mods and upgrades laugh.gif

If you have the means to fund the Golf and enjoy spirited driving, you can't go wrong with this car rclxms.gif
*
ops.. the GT is the one that's RM130k+ right? doh.gif
The 308 is a much bigger car I think and the rear aircon vents should be a bit higher too I think

Umm... when I test drove it the sound insulation was considered below par. from what I gather the GTi should more or less be the same but just that the GTi has a got a different sound (which would be the engine - exhaust) to listen to compared to TSi (which engine - exhaust is pretty much silent therefore you hear a lot of other 'sound' / noise).

Come to think of it, I can't recall hearing heavy rain noises in other cars (Alfas, BMWs) I've driven before either sweat.gif Guess, its not something people often pay attention to because when it's raining heavily, its usually very noisy laugh.gif

Actually there are 2 different types of head units for 2 different Sciroccos:

Scirocco 2.0 comes with the RCD 510 touch screen which doesn't come with the GPS navigation. Only the RNS versions has navigation.

Scirocco 1.4 comes with the RCD 310 monochrome screen.

thanks for the info Mike... from that I gathered that Malaysia is so backwards that we don't have any cars with built-in GPS yet.

Getting traffic report on the built-in display while in the car is much better than hearing on the radio too late...

QUOTE(forextor @ Sep 28 2010, 02:09 PM)
10 days? That is fast!.. I am torn between a brand spanking new Golf 1.4 TSI or a used Mini Cooper S.. the Mini Cooper can be had anytime once loan is approved.

Mini is small but its cheeky look is so appealing and will never become out-dated. Wife prefers the Mini but being a second had car of course it does not come with 5 years warranty like the Golf! My only gripe of the Golf is the interior is so unexciting, the Mini interior on the other hand always makes me smile..
*
It depends on what you want... Normal city driving or long distance?

I've a Mini Cooper (gf's one actually but I drive it most of the time... not the S version though) and
- it's not as comfy as the Golf
- the ride is rather stiff (even stiffer than my Alfa)
- get your wife to test drive the Mini first and see how she likes it driving on our M'sian roads and over speed bumps
- the steering is much heavier compared to the Golf
- overtaking trucks or getting overtaken by trucks can be quite scary cos you're in this little car (though not as small as the old Mini)
- used Mini (depending on which year), you may encounter the steering wheel problem where it fails and it becomes so hard/stiff that a girl won't be able to steer it at all (even I found it hard to turn left or right) and this failure can just happen like that.. imagine what would happen if you're driving and about to take a corner and the steering fails
- no iPod connector for the 2005 model that I have
- it's basically a 2-seater but can carry another 2 for emergencies (the 2 at the back will suffer)
- boot space fits 2 medium-sized bags
- the Mini though used will have better re-sale value compared to the Golf
- FC isn't that fantastic but it's ok
- the one I had doesn't come with rear parking sensors
- the main windscreen chips and cracks easily
- the driver side aircon vents are kinda blocked by the steering wheel.. well, good for those with sweaty hands.. hehe
- wind noise at 140km/h above but how often does one drive that fast right...? right??

btw, a new range of Minis will be out next year and it will have 4 doors!

azxel,

care to share the info for this new (4dr) mini? my, erm, someone likes the look of it, but given it's targetted market i honestly don't know much about mini, or its variant. anywhere i can know more about the specs sold here? both AP & imported.

sorry out of topic, tongue.gif
*
LOL.. off topic here a bit ah... tongue.gif

I dunno much about, just saw the papers that day and I didn't even notice that it had 4 doors (it was the gf who said "it's got 4 doors!! but defeats the purpose of it being a Mini" laugh.gif )

From the looks of it, it feels like it's made to grab the VW Golf's market share

QUOTE(forextor @ Sep 28 2010, 05:05 PM)
Hi thanks for the detailed info of the Mini.., yup I have driven Mini Cooper S and I know the suspension is rather stiff (good for 'rempiting' though.. lol).
My wife also has driven a friend's Mini and she also complained of the stiff suspension and the heavy steering.

I will test drive the Golf 1.4 soon and lets see how it goes... probably I will go for the Golf as it has 5 years warranty... but wait until I test drive it first.. :-)
*
Oh I forgot to add

- Golf has much smoother gear change (super duper smooth that I was quite shocked) compared to the Mini which very often you'd feel the jerk especially when you can't go fast... it's not a car for driving slow or on roads with heavy traffic

QUOTE(phas3r @ Sep 28 2010, 09:34 PM)
you'll be hitting above 140 very often in this golf i'm sure. doubt it will have any wind noise issue
*
bro.. I did test the new Golf before and I found the road noise kinda irritating (especially when I was sitting behind)... However, sitting in front, not much.. didn't go 140km/h during the test drive (only hit 120km/h to see how many RPM was 110km/h) was the roads were quite heavy with traffic

Anyway... the new Golf. Not a perfect car but plenty darn good in many areas if you ask me. That's why I'm kinda waiting for the new Alfa Romeo Giulietta to compare (once an Alfisti, kinda hard to not drive an Alfa) brows.gif

actually i find the car's sound insulation from outside is super good. u can't hear the other cars / vehicles but the only complain is internally u can hear the engine and road noise. but on the RE050 seems ok tho still new and of coz a bit louder but i expect the sound to go down after the tyres are run-in proper.

Before buying the 1.4TSI i went to test drive the Alfa 159. Very gd handling and comfortable but dun think is my type of car, very jerky esp when u wanna hav a "shock" boost..  SA explained to me that it's coz it's like a "manual" car just it auto-clutch for u .... haha... if u can understand wat i'm trying to say ...

loving the DSG dude... hit 180km/h easily ..at between 3k-4k rpm i think (if not mistaken) .. had a short burst of speed yesterday ard 2am along nkve...lolx
*
Oooh? I didn't hear any engine noise when I test drove the Golf (even could barely hear the signal indicator tick!) and that was what impressed me.. hehe

Was wondering if a change of tyres would help with the road noise or not..

I think the 159 is still using selespeed which isn't very smooth... the new Guiletta uses dual dry clutch (thinking of getting the manual as I love driving manual cars) brows.gif

I gotta agree with you that the DSG gear box is ultimate man!! nothing (so far, the cars I've driven) comes close! thumbup.gif

beetle - 2 door slow poke.. hehe

the DSG I tested (not got!! tongue.gif ) was actually the new Golf's 7 speed

QUOTE(phas3r @ Sep 29 2010, 06:00 PM)
^all DSG for golf 1.4 is 7 speed mr.dupe  whistling.gif
that's what i thought, how can azxel said it's hard not to go above 140. plus the speedo on VW cars are a bit on the high side, you can confirm by GPS readings.
Alfa 159 is a nice car, there's 3.2 V6 version available for below rm300k  drool.gif but rule for alfas : buy first, think later
so you got the RE050 for your 17"? it's not the quietest of tyre from what i've heard, michelin PS3 / GY f1 ASY handles road noise better
yeah i think the engine noise is quiet too, for GTI the exhaust makes it louder, but i enjoy that  brows.gif
the smoothness of DSG can't quite match normal auto/cvt ones, but it's better than selespeed or bmw's SMG
*
cruise control la on the highway!!! ( I believe I did mention that this car will get you a lot of speeding tickets a few weeks back when I test drove it tongue.gif )

Alfa 159 sedan la... dun quite like.. I like hot hatches brows.gif that's why the Guiletta is in my sights...

I'm also a bit not used to driving quiet cars.. hehe... always thought that cars should have a bit and nice balance of engine and exhaust roar to enhance driving experience thumbup.gif

I thought that the smoothness of this new Golf's DSG was much better than any CVT or CVVT engine car (those jap cars) that I've driven before leh blink.gif
