hey there guys...

i find there's lack of a place for saxophonists to gather around here, although i've seen quite a few lurking around.

perhaps we could share pointers as well as help each other out here?

anyway i'd start the ball rollin', perhaps a good start is to share our gear, then we can move on to help each other find parts and accessories that are hard to find in our country!

Horn: Selmer Paris Mark VI Alto
Mouthpiece: Dukoff D8 Metal & Beechler S5S
Reeds: Vandoren Java Red #2.5 & Frederick L. Hemke #2.5
Styles: Smooth Jazz, Contemporary Jazz
Inspirations: Charlie Parker, David Sanborn, Dave Koz, Kenny Garrett, Stan Getz

my fellow saxophonists, report in!

hey there. great to know you're interested with it.

maybe girls would have plus points for guys who can play the sax, but i won't really recommend you to pick up an instrument just to tackle girls, although its a good motivation.

take a listen to some of the sax greats out there, maybe you'll fall in love with their sounds.

i'd say its not an easy instrument to play like the guitar on top of the instrument's high price, thats why there are only a few saxophonists around. but i'm sure once you get playing you'll start to fall in love with it...

I know a bit about the sax.

I've been in a brass band with the sax.

And it needs lots and lots of practice to make a nice jazz sound.

Anyways, can you recommend me some nice Sax artists?

If you dont practise Sax...forget it. Dont be like another 'hangat tahi ayam' case where you only get enthusiastic at the beginning only to 'close shop' and sell your Sax after a few weeks.

Playing Sax is not easy. If you have the time and DISCPILINE....then by all means go for it. If not, better dont bother at all.

that's good.

well your own sound is something you develop over the years. jazz is in the soul, so it very much depends on how the musician expresses it.

anyway back to your question...

it depends on what genre you are comfortable with.

personally i think apart from kenny g who's very much famous with people around the world, there are a lot more artistes you can look up. for instance, i listen to anything from charlie parker, dave koz & kenny garrett to asian artistes like kaori kobayashi & danny jung. put it simply, its up to you to discover these artistes and which of their styles you enjoy listening to!

Yeah sax is very hard to play, I tried it before when I was in a band but I was really a trombone/baritone player back then so am not really that interested. But it was fun though playing Alto Sax biggrin.gif (for Soprano sax , which Kenny G uses I think should be easier hmm.gif , not sure tongue.gif

Is there any band here that has a sax, trumpet and trombone player alongwith the lead, rhythm, bass players and drummer? rclxms.gif

lol. those are saxophonists i usually listen to, well nobody wants to spend time listening to bad music ain't it?

although i have to disagree with your 2nd sentence tho haha, there are many great japanese girls who can play the horn, but we still do have saxophone greats in malaysia as well, it just a little harder to discover them. there are also some great bossa nova and jazz saxophonists very near to us, from singapore! met quite a couple of them randomly...

sax is an easy instrument to learn, but its definitely a hard one to master, not to mention its not easy producing a soothing yet powerful sound from it.

the soprano saxophone is actually a little harder to play in comparison to the tenor or alto, as it requires more precise control from your air speed and embouchure. um, so i would have to say nope, the soprano sax which kenny g plays isn't easier to play than the others. it took him years of practicing and playing to get to where he is today, and still many saxophone players don't really admire his works lol.

maybe you should try looking at yamaha outlets, they should have experienced teachers conducting classes, or maybe they can offer some headway as to where you can find teachers around.

anyway, i remember seeing quite a number of saxophonists scattered around the forum... where have they all been??

stanleyseah999, it's a very good initiative to start a thread dedicated to saxophone and fans alike. i applaud you. hopefully it may help to share more of our knowledge to the uninformed, and help the players exchange pointers.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
just to share my current setup;
HORN : Yamaha Alto AS100
MOUTHPIECE : Yamaha 4C (awaiting new Meyer 5M), standard ligature
REED : Frederick Hemke 2.5
YEARS : 1 year
TUTOR : at Yamaha Subang Parade
STYLE : still student level
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

for curious minds, I've put up a blog discussing my experience from day one of learning saxophone at http://eflatsax.blogspot.com.

Hopefully it is of useful assistance... (apologies for 'hijacking' a little of your thread stanleyseah999)

I'm currently playing the Soprano Saxophone and I'm interested in forming my own Saxophone Group which consists of:

1) 1 Soprano Saxophonist (that's me)
2) 1, 2 or 3 Alto Saxophonists
3) 1 or 2 Tenor Saxophonists
4) 1 Baritone Saxophonist

To those who're playing the saxophone and is interested in forming a group (quartet, quintet, etc), feel feel to reply here. Or if you know of anyone, do direct them to this thread.

Location: Klang Valley (for a start)
Age range: Doesn't matter
Skills required: Good playing skill & Good sight-reading

The rest of the information shall be discussed when the group is formed.
Thank you and looking forward to positive responses. :)

Hello guys! I am new to the world of saxophones.
I have read that the alto saxophone is more suitable for beginners.
I have been searching around and found two basic models namely the YAS 275 as well as the YAS 475.
The prices:
YAS 275 - 99,800 yen or RM3800
YAS 475 - 142,000 yen or RM5400

Hope to have feedback regarding the price and models from the sifu sifu here. Thanks!

almost same as piano. depends on your teacher and ur skills. location also another issue for cost. if you're going to the teacher's home, then it'll be cheaper. usually music centers are more expensive because they will take a percentage of the fees and the rest is for the teacher.

Awww~ Hahah. biggrin.gif That'd be awesome. xD LOL. I was thinking of involving myself in a sax ensemble after i'm done with school, be it a quartet, a nonet, etc, but my first priority is to get an instrument first. (x I've yet to get one of my own, and even if i could, a tenor and bari would be a little too out of my budget. :/ I'll only be more thorough after school since i've got different priorities to meet now. xD

I saw an ad on mudah.my where the owner is selling his/her tenor for 1.2k. It's really cheap for a tenor, but it's all the way in Penang... ): I can't travel that far or i'd certainly buy it. Tho, the ad was posted up back in February 9th, so i'm not sure if it's still available... Here's the link if you wanna check it out just for the sake of doing so >>> http://www.mudah.my/Tenor+saxophone+like+new-8538750.htm . (:

Not yet.. :/ I simply don't have the time... :/ And as much as i want to play among strings more often, saxophones aren't orchestral instruments, so i don't exactly have a spot in an orchestra unless they need a saxophonist for certain songs. I've played the tenor once with PJ Philharmonic Orchestra, but that's about it. Unfortunately. ): I'm on the lookout for symphonic bands now so that i can join one after i leave high school. But i've only come across one so far... :/ PJ Youth Symphonic Band. Any other recommendations? Anyoneeee!? D: D:

Any of you played in MPYO before? They don't have saxes, but they do have clarinets.

If any of you are in Bukit Jalil / Sri Petaling, give me a ring, we can jam.

Awww! So far. :/ Gotta wait till i finally get my license. Gahh.. =_=
I really enjoy playing, but the people whom i know don't like jamming on the sax as much as they do with acoustics, basses and drums~

It's hard to get a good mic for less that a lot of money.

I made my own performance clip on mic from a goos quality china condenser, DIY required. So now for performances I have wireless mic system.

Greetings to all the sifus!
I'm planning to buy a YAS-275 saxophone soon.
As a beginner, I still dunno much about the purchasing process.
Got a few questions that I would like to ask.
1. When checking/inspecting the new saxophone, what are the things that I should look out for?
2. What type of reed and blowpiece should I choose?

Thanks for the help!

Do you have a teacher? it's hard to test these things by yourself. OF course, paying $$$$ for a Yamaha is supposedly buying peace of mind.

As far as reeds and mouthpiece are concerned, again, your tutor will know best.

Hi all,

I've always wanted to play the Sax since 6 years ago. and I finally got the chance this year. I am getting an Alto this month but I'm still not sure which to choose. My tutor is unable to help me and I'm not sure how do I 'test' when I don't even know how to play a Sax.

Any cheap Alto sax that you can recommend for a beginner?
Reed and mouthpiece can be a hard decision to make too.

there are saxophones in silver-plated too..
perhaps gold-plated looks more attractive?
well, take good care of it and the color normally wont fade..
it's just that black spots might appear out of no where :/

If you wipe down your sax with a polishing cloth like once a week, and be careful not to knock it around, the finish will last decades.

It's like your car paint: how well can you take care of it?

For waxing with lacquer polish, do that once every few months, and never rub too hard.

P.S: I have a silver Yamaha YAS-25 for sale.

China Saxophones are not as bad as you think. They have come a long way and improved since the 1980's. Go to mudah.my and check it out. There are plenty of used Saxophones for sale. Bring a good unbiased Saxophonist to test it out for you and hear what he says.

Most Entry to intermediate level Saxes are now made in China anyway. Its not like we have much choice, do we? Unless you are willing to pay premium price for high end American Saxes then it's different la.

My sax is from Taiwan and so is my teacher's. So far it's been performing well and no problems yet.

But maybe its because I bought a good quality one.

What mouthpiece are you using now?

to just try different openings, you can try the Yamaha series. different number on the mouthpiece means different openings.

Go to ebay and buy YAmaha CUSTOM Mouthpiece...which is the intermedaite to high end MPC from Yamaha. This is not the common '4C' beginner mpc.

There is the word 'CUSTOM' engraved on the MPC. This is made of ebonite. Its sound is round, focused and sweet. If you are lucky...you can buy one for less than RM200 inclusive of shipping to Malaysia!

Empire is right about the CUSTOM mouthpiece...

There are a lot of mouthpieces on the market though. Try before you buy.

Please note though, of the law of diminishing returns...

the difference between an RM150 and RM500 mouthpiece is perhaps 20%...and beginners most likely will not be able to produce a different sound.

4cm means it is CUSTOM mouthpiece which is an excellent mpc. 4C means it is the cheap plastic mpc for beginners.

It starts with the player 1st. No point having the world's most expensive sax if the player is only at basic level.

Great thread on sax.

I bought my first alto sax on 2003. It was a Yamaha student model. Sold it and bought a Yamaha tenor. Traded that one for a Selmer tenor Super Action Serie II. By then it was 2007. I now have a Super Action Serie II Alto, Selmer London alto, LA Sax soprano, and two other sopranos. My favorites are the Selmers.

Apart from Yamaha mouthpieces, i have Selmer mouthpieces for both alto and tenor, and a tenor Berg Larsen.

I am self taught and play for fun with some bands and midi backup.

Whenever i gwt the chance, i would perform at gatherings and even at hotel lounges, if they let me.

My question is: Do any of you play alone any without rhythm backup? Does it sound OK? I am told that we should NEVER play sax alone by itself.

Continue with the good forum. Cheers.

The teacher at chambers music I think is Mr. Bohari, and he is a very experienced teacher, been teaching more than 20 years. Not sure if they have a new one though.

However, the rooms there are very small. And Bohari teaches Classical stuff only.

The thing about playing solo without backing, is that you have to be supremely confident about your tone. In the end it's all about that beautiful saxophone tone. Only if your tone is perfect can your solo performance sound hauntingly captivating. :-)

To get better tone, you'll have to spend a lot of quality time with your sax, playing only long notes and scales....until you and the saxophone understand each other.

How to know whether you've got it? It's when it feels effortless to get the right tone. :-)

finally i can back online for so many month....hahaha
seem like alot being ask the same question...

where to get cheap sax?
1) Mudah.com
2) CHina made brand.

where to learn?
1) ask brien here...hahaha
2) still got alot place to be ask....no harm walk in to big yamaha shop or or other music store they can arrange one for you.

how to produce good sound(tone)?
1) this question always ask by beginner....stick to your effort in playing long tone and scale...why becoz IT WORKS!! i hav been playing since 12yo untill now 30yo....i`m still doing this nonstop...but now added with circulation breathing.
2) no matter how good the sax is even from kennyg brand...if you did not practice in long tone and scale...the tone still same like normal cheapo sax.

Solo with your sax....
1) practice make perfect....
2) is a loud instrument but once you master it.... even you blow so loud your neighbours will love it...( happen to me...)..hahah

If any of you are looking for a really cheap and good (tested) saxophone, please let me know.

I have Xing Hai Alto sax for RM1900. Sounds perfectly in tune, action is also precise.

Hi. May I know whether there is any teacher here for Soprano Saxophone? I have been learning that (self-taught) and would now like to learn some of the techniques properly. Thanks so much!

By the way I live in Sunway, and quite flexible with location as long as it is not too far.

Thanks!

Soprano is the hardest cos the lipping is very sensitive due to its small MPC. Sikit2 wrong lipping...you will sound flat or sharp...and sound really bad.

Thinking of changing my reeds to "traditional vandoren" to test out if it's gonna b easier to play or sounds better than d current normal rico no. 2 tat m using laugh.gif
Managed to get most of d altissimo notes now (till high c with octave key, managed high g without key but damn hard to get consistent high a without octave key) but hav probs with d tones' control...no soul or feel in d music at all sweat.gif
Think that d reeds shud help a lil tongue.gif

Think u can send it to Bentley for service or maybe Woh Fatt (same row with McD Jalan Silang) or do what my frens used to do when we were in band. Buy teflon tapes (the one used to wrap around pipes) and wrap it on d neck tongue.gif

Bro, U can actually learn how to play on ur own smile.gif
M doing that myself but kinda stuck after being able to play a freaking basic song LOL
Kenny G's songs r outta d question except for Wedding Song tongue.gif

Anyway, try to learn from youtube first, if still can't play, better go to yamaha music center's website to look for sax teachers smile.gif
have been playing mine, average less than 30min a day since i got it smile.gif u'll need to practice smile.gif
Use reeds #1 and #2 to play to at least learn how to play, once u r able to play properly, u can change to harder reeds...for myself, m fine with rico #2 but struggling like crazy on vandoren java #2.5...well, as said, it's all abt practice...

I juz hope that the sax experts in LYN visit this thread more often to provide guidance to us, newbies laugh.gif

Cheap but branded? Tough luck, bro. You want Branded..you pay BRANDED PRICE. As simple as that.

Prices there are a lot lower than sold here. Even after paying tax in Malaysian customs...they are still cheaper.

I think the so called branded that u r referring to is a Yamaha and Kenny G's as compared with a Selmer type or do u consider Jupiter a branded one as well?
Jupiter 547GL (500 series - beginner) cost about RM3k-ish if i remember correctly. I bought a 700series - intermediate for RM4k at Bentley Music. Supposed to be okay price for not so branded. Yanagisawa, Selmer, Yamaha will cost more than RM8-9k for one intermediate one, i think laugh.gif

RM3k's just a bit more expensive than a normal Iphone5 or Samsung S4 and i would say it's worth more than a phone.

Good luck and cheers bro thumbup.gif

I dont like EWI> it is nothing but a glorified Keyboard in the shape of a blowing instrument.

All the sounds are from a sound module....which means it is no different from a Keyboard sound.

It is just like playing a Keyboard...but without a Keyboard.

DUKOFF MPC is damn geng! Brilliant projection...super powerful tone.....used in many well known Recordings.
Many songs you hear since the 1980's that feature Sax use DUKOFF a lot. It is an expensive MPC of course....and is regularly mentioned whenever the toop MPC's are discussed by Pro's.

My Female Saxophone Player also uses DUKOFF. She has 2 DUKOFF mpc....and she is considering selling one of them since she only has 1 mouth and cant use 2 at the same time hehehe.

PM me if you are interested. It will be a lot cheaper than buying from elsewhere.

She is in Kelana Jaya area.

Whilst this sounds cool .... imagine, after all the heavy rehearsals practising all the parts....and writing down all the parts...you will hear the dreaded ' Sorry....I am not free for the 3 shows this month' from one of your band members...and all your hard work goes down the drain.

I am someone who has been there...done that for 20+ years... and lived to warn you of this. You can thank me now

Hi guys, I have recently tried learning the saxophone by my self online and interestingly enough, my guitar is like collecting dust now. I want to ask, are there any saxophone classes where I could sign up besides yahama music school around subang/pj/kl?

So far from self thought I can play and finger only a few notes, can play happy birthday song, already happy, but i got problem with the embouchure and some problem keeping the stream of air smooth. Like if I play "A" note is fine but once I play "G" note, like I cant suddenly jump to the "G" note.

Oh and im playing an Alto Sax.

Not sure if u need to attend a class for sax, u can search in youtube for classes like Harvey Pittel's, MrVSax etc to learn smile.gif or just using keywords like embouchure smile.gif if u really need to attend class, think yamaha music school's website did indicate shops that teach how to play sax.
I learn how to play on my own, with just basic instruction from fellow bandsmen back in school days + vids from youtube smile.gif By d way, u might have the same prob like me, difficult to loosen up d embouchure for lower notes tongue.gif i can play high G without pressing d octave key than playing D or low C tongue.gif struggles like crazy to play notes that are lower than G doh.gif
Good luck, it's a damn tough instrument to play LOL

smile.gif can anyone recommend a good teacher. I played tenor in the school band 30 years ago and just bought a clarinet to see whether I can remember playing and since its cheap rm700 I would not waste a lot of money. Well its kinda tough... without proper teacher. Difficult to hit high octave. Squeking... low no reed is easy but cannot hit high notes.

Maybe uncle empire can become my sifu

Not sure if i m right about this but smaller mouthpiece means more difficult to play according to my friends back in band days, but i kinda find it the opposite, smaller mouthpiece makes it easier for me to play (mid range notes, not higher altissimo) doh.gif both trumpet and soprano sax are easier than Eb horn and alto sax's mouthpiece tongue.gif

For saxophone lessons, I've had 2 teachers before, one is with Mr Bohari at Chambers Music, Sungai Wang Plaza, I took the saxophone grade 5 exam while learning with him. (This is few years ago, I'm not sure if he's still teaching there.)

Here's another saxophone teacher I've learned with few years ago too. I learned more to performance and improvisation stuffs from him, Mr Thomas.

Just bought the Neptune. Not been played for a year and I notice on of the flat key is stuck. Got to yank the pad to open it. Some pads got sticky sound when opening. Like pulling a cellophane take. A bit only lah. But the pad opens and closes normally. Is this normal.

Can anyone be my situ?

Yes...common probs cos it has not been played regularly. Play it for 7 days non stop... and it should be better after that.
If the pads are sticky....pry them open gently with your fingers...and press the keys over and over again to rid the stickiness.

Is it ok for beginners to get Tenor sax rather than Alto sax? I recently watch some vids on youtube. The alto tends to get mosquito-like sound while the Tenor has masculin sound. (sorry for my bad english)

Of course it is ok. ALTO is too common. 9 out of 10 Sax players play Alto.
Tenor on the other hand....is for people who really want the sexy Tenor tone.

I was thinking of starting at yamaha myself too, but then I found this guy who teaches part time at his place and decided to try him out. Reason being classes can be flexible, not rigid like a music school. He is a young guy and very talented and friendly, he used to teach in yamaha too.

Yes you really need to get a sax, I bought a used yamaha, still a little pricey but yamaha's are known to produce really good quality sax's, perfect for beginners. Best if you seek advice from the teacher for the recommended sax.

If you're interested to try him out, let me know I'll pass you his contact.

you can get special paper that cleans the pads so that they don't stick. Pads stick because they have become old or have been closed for too long. if you want a DIY solution, put a bit of baby powder on a cotton bud, and rub the pad and the metal hole the pad sits on.

*
There are certain training that you can do to fix the quality of air. Remember, good quality air = good quality sound.

I'm assuming you play A and G on the lower octave. If you squeak or lose the sound when changing between notes that are next to each other, you're embouchure is unstable and perhaps you're not yet used to the setup of your saxophone. Try practicing long notes and then change only when the first note is "solid".

Saxophone (or any instrument) is like a lady. Treat her well, and she'll do most of the work for you.

QUOTE(rasha @ Dec 3 2013, 09:30 AM)
smile.gif can anyone recommend a good teacher.

*
Clarinet is one of the toughest instruments to play. It's prone to squeaking because of the position of the thumb octave key and the 4th finger holes are a bit big and often leak air if your finger seal in not tight.

To improve high notes, play long notes, and maybe start practicing from E down or up, because it's the easiest to blow. Respect the high notes and measure the resistance in your mouth to the sound.

Long TONE is the 1st key to a solid tone. If you refuse to do this exercise everyday.....pls dont blame anyone if your tone still sucks. there is NO short cut to good tine.

YOu HAVE to do the boring LONG TONE exercises...no matter what.

Need to seek answer from the masters around here. I recently bought a second-hand soprano saxophone (Jupiter) from my friend. Everything looks fine except when I play it, it sounds more like a trumpet than a soprano saxophone. Am I playing it wrongly or the mouthpiece is not good?

FYI, I learned alto saxophone in the past. I am just starting to play soprano saxophone. Very hard to find method book for soprano saxophone. Any idea where I can find a good soprano sax teacher in Cheras?

So many reasons why it would sound like a trumpet (meaning you got a sound thats more like "peeeeeeet" rather than "duuuuuu" or "piiiiiiiii" right?)

Mouthpiece quality, embouchure quality, reed quality, all may contribute to that trumpet like sound.

Good way to remove it is to try and blow with less air and bite a little bit harder. It's not so simple in real life (there's a reason why good tone takes years to develop), but yeah...can't tell you much else without actually hearing you play.

Good luck!

If you're into pop music, one thing that everyone wants to do is improvise.

If you're just starting to improvise and play something different ffom the main melody, you need to keep the 3 dimensions of improvisation in mind:

Dynamics, articulation, Notes.

Changing any of these will count as improvisation.

Best to start improvising on one note!

If you're learning a specific song...always keepin mind some simple rules to make practice more efficient!

1) most songs are repeats...focus on learning particular phrases properly, and repeat throughout the song!

2) only certain portions of the song are very technical....always practice that first...never a good a idea to practice from beginning to end.

3) Memorize whenever possible...and focus on details!

4) Listen to the song as much as possible...

5) Don't try to do anything funny like twisting the sound or improvisation until you got the original notes or tune right...after mastering the original, then you have the technical ability and confidence to do the rest.

good luck and have fun!

Not sure of that brand, but at the moment buying a sax less than rm2000 is risky. You'll be able to play alone, however there's a risk of fundamental tuning issues that make it difficult to play with other people.

Hi sifus. I know this is a dumb question, but, I started the sax instrument quite late, at form 5. At that time, my dad bought me the china sax for rm1.5k. And, I've been practising off and on, and at one time didnt hold my sax for a year. Anyways, my question is, should I stick to that sax, or should I get a selmer as500 or yamaha y500?

better to continue to hone your techique first. a Better Sax does not mean you will be a better Player. It starts with the basics first.

ahh ok. btw, could you recommend some great exercising tips to strengthen my embouchure and improve tone quality?

This is my sax routine daily. Spend around 2-3 hours daily (though I feel is still so little).

1. Warm up with long tones, normally the first octave(s) of F, E and D.
2. After warm up, do about 5-6 major scales by slurring.
3. Then, each scales I do like long notes on each notes, till the 3rd octave, up and down.
4. After that, I'd do tonguing.
5. Then, arpeggios.
6. And end again with long notes.

Any other method of practice that would actually improve my tone?

Stick to the same sax and get some practice back. But since you haven't touched it for a year, perhaps get it checked out for leaks. Minor regulation will make it sound good as new. Let me know if you need to hook up with a repair specialist.

yamaha has beginner sax but can be pretty costly...
Anyway, u watch kaori playing Nothing's Gonna Change My Love For You is it? she uses tenor for this
What type of sax are you looking for? alto, tenor or soprano?

Go and google for sax forum and youtube to find out which one do u like the most, soprano is a Bb, Alto is a Eb while Tenor is also a Bb but one octave lower than soprano...
Majority of the ppl started with Alto so, you might wanna start with that
for learning purpose, plenty of youtube video to learn from

You can ask the sifus ere for places that teach u how to play sax ere

No prob..this thread is not that active...

This is just my noobie 2 cent worth of advice that I can provide:

If you want a yamaha, you can go for it or like me, i bought an intermediate Jupiter brand soprano at 4k when I started, which is slightly more expensive than China brand like Antigua etc, around 3k-ish...An intermediate Yamaha soprano should priced around 10k

Am happy with the Jupiter brand though...it sounds much better than those alto and tenor sax that Jupiter produce back in days when i was in school band as Jupiter's quality has improved a lot since the 90s...

I went for a decent intermediate coz i know i wont spend a lot on a good intermediate level sax from good companies like Yamaha, Selmer and Yanagisawa until i am very sure that i am at "proper intermediate" level...

Other than practicing to improve your tone, you can also buy mouthpiece, reeds and ligature that suits ur playing style...reeds wise, majority will recommend vandoren n u can also use rico brand (which Kenny G still using, i guess, obviously sponsored LOL)

My current setup for my soprano is a Yamaha 4C mouthpiece, single screw Rovner Dark ligature with a normal size 2 Vandoren reed...Yamaha's 4C mouthpiece are meant for beginners but some experienced ones still use it as they can produce good tone even using a "basic" mouthpiece. This setup does gave me much better tone than than the stock Jupiter setup with normal Rico reeds (not even Rico Royal but can't complain coz it is easy to play and got it for free)...

You can google for d china sax in Mudah or can PM me for a shop that sells cheaper chinese brand sax (not sure abt quality of sound though LOL)...just to clarify, I dun sell sax ya, i gotta know tat shop coz was looking for Vandoren reeds for my soprano instead of buying online tongue.gif

Best bet is to check out Bentley Music shop which is nearby Ikea...I got my soprano there and there have a lot of musical instruments to choose from as one of d largest musical instrument supplier in Malaysia

If you dont mind paying for shipping fee, you can also check out SML Paris, which i personally think produces good saxes...it was a damn good brand back in the 80s or was it 90s and the brand is now revived...not that sure if it is related to the original SML but the tone quality it produced on a stock mouthpiece n reed is pretty good for an amateur like me... http://www.smlparis.com/ They r selling decently priced sax..an intermediate aka 600 series alto sax is priced at around 900euro

Do more search online to find choose ur sax, budget and types of sound that u wanted... good luck in hunting n seriously, u need to visit Bentley Music smile.gif

for me, i will put a tshirt into the bell part. it will reduce the sound by a lot, but it's harder to play the lower notes. and try to control and play softer.
also choose the right time to practice, don't clash with Muslim's prayer times, don't practice after 10pm, don't practice before 8am.

there's another option, you can buy a saxophone mute. saw a review on youtube that it really reduces the sound, and you can still play the lower notes.

do you guys have any good source to get music notes for chinese songs? (pop/oldies)
its always a turn off for me when i came across a song and wanted to play it, but couldnt find music note for it. i'm a newbie, so play by ear doesnt really works for me..
*
There are books that have the notes for it. I have one that's from Rhythm MP.

Actually you can just get any music book that has piano notes. Just play the melody line.

Hope that helps.

Grace notes are easy to practice, not difficult to put into the song...what you can do is perhaps put in an embellishment (grace note, turn, etc) whenever you begin, or end, a run of notes.

I have a used Yamaha for sale, RM3000 negotiable. I think a new yamaha now is going for about RM6000...due to our weak ringgit.

If you switch the a better mouthpiece...the difference is IMMEDIATE.

The mouthpiece is the most important part of a saxophone...invest in a good one.

a basic Yamaha 4C, 5C, or 6C is actually pretty good...definitely better than those crap chinese ones, and not too expensive. If you want to try one, let me know.

You can probably buy online, and they can ship to you. I supply to my students a Hercules saxophone stand, which you can add attachments for the soprano sax as well, if you need in the future.

saxophone stand can be dangerous. I saw a kid running near the stage and knocked the saxophone stand WITH the Saxophone on it! the Saxophone suffered a dent.... and the Player was so pissed. The kid's mum refused to pay for the damage and walked out of the hall.

The safer way is to put the Saxophone top of the hard case....with the Sax sleeping on its side.

Hello Sir,

I just bought this sax and received yesterday. He asked for 3.5k and after nego.. he let go 3k. Made in Indonesia. Sax very new and clean, pads are good and no dent. This guy own a music production company and this sax he bought last time for teaching for a short time. Tried it last night and works fine. He showed me the original price he bought around 6.7k last time.
