I'm a beginner alto sax player for a few months now, and have been taking lessons with a guy called Brien. He's pretty good and I recommend trying him out smile.gif

hi guys, i'm tempted to learn sax. alto to be spesific. given that i dont have any musical related background, is it a good idea to sign up class at yamaha? or do u guys have any any suggestion i.e trainer/class/self-learn?
and also, do i need to get myself a sax before anything else? any sax to recommend for beginner? and of coz money is a concern smile.gif

I was thinking of starting at yamaha myself too, but then I found this guy who teaches part time at his place and decided to try him out. Reason being classes can be flexible, not rigid like a music school. He is a young guy and very talented and friendly, he used to teach in yamaha too.

Yes you really need to get a sax, I bought a used yamaha, still a little pricey but yamaha's are known to produce really good quality sax's, perfect for beginners. Best if you seek advice from the teacher for the recommended sax.

If you're interested to try him out, let me know I'll pass you his contact.

Contacted him and apparently, he can teach despite that i cant read much of the music notes already. You took his class right? how was he?

He's good, friendly chap. Speaks very well, and explains any stuff that you ask him.
I have not experienced classes at a school like yamaha, so I can't really compare him to others.

Aaah... I have 2 choices now. It's either brien or another guy at Ampang

You can ask Brien for a free trial class, but if you're staying nearer to Ampang then that would be the better choice I guess.
