Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that new signing Bebe will compete for a berth on United's wings, but insists there is no rush to throw the 20-year-old into action.

Echoing David Gill's sentiments that the youngster's talent needs honing and refining, Sir Alex is keen to initially focus on Bebe's assimilation to English life. With a variety of established and promising wingers already in place at Old Trafford, the United manager is happy to take his time.

"He's quick, two-footed, raw material but I'm sure we can work with that," Sir Alex told his pre-Newcastle press conference. "He doesn't speak any English so we'll provide him with a language teacher.

"The most important thing is to settle him into the club. We don't need to rush him because we have plenty of players in his position like Nani, Valencia, Obertan, Cleverley and Giggs."

The signing of the almost unheard-of Portuguese striker stunned football, and Sir Alex has confirmed that the deal was struck largely due to the impulses of United's scouting network, allied to growing interest in the player from other major clubs.

"Normally we'd assess a player over a long period but we have a good scout in Portugal and we trust his impulse," admitted the manager. "Other clubs were starting to hover so we decided to go for it."

Sir Alex Ferguson says it could be a blessing that United's first game of the season against Newcastle is on a Monday night, as it will give his players additional time to recover from the midweek internationals.

Several players were on international duty in midweek, including Ji-sung Park travelling to Korea, Javier Hernandez playing against Spain in Mexico, and Rafael travelling to the USA for Brazil's friendly match.

All three players have returned to Carrington with their fellow international Reds and will train with the rest of the squad today. But Sir Alex has made clear to his men that it is imperative that United are quick out of the traps.

"The game being on Monday is a blessing after our players' midweek travels," the Reds boss told reporters on Friday morning. Javier Hernandez was over in Mexico, Ji-sung Park in Korea, Rafael da Silva in the States for Brazil, Jonny Evans in Montenegro, Nemanja Vidic in Serbia. They’ll train today.

"In a normal situation, you’re wondering how they’ll be when they come back and you’re having to wait until the Friday morning to see how they are for the game on the Saturday. But now we’re not playing until Monday, it gives us a couple of extra days to prepare. So I think it’s a bit of a blessing for us."

LONDON: Manchester United star Gary Neville became the laughing stock of onlookers when he had diesel put in his luxury petrol-driven Audi Q7.

According to The Sun, Neville, 35, pumped 60-pounds worth of diesel into his 100,000-pound Audi Q7. When he tried to start it near his home in Bolton, Lancashire, the engine cut out.

Neville called his dad Neville for a lift and phoned the recovery firm.

An onlooker said: "Everyone laughed because Gary has a reputation for being serious and he was left looking dozy."
