There are few possibilities.. could be the mother is in stress condition (most common causes as glider will do ANYTHING when they are stress).. could be the mother is not getting sufficient nutrition to support the joey (but normally they will reject the baby instead of killing it, but it's possible).. could be someone handled the joey or the mother smells different scent attached on the joey (she feels threaten..)..

So, you should ask your friend what happen..how many glider in the cage? is the female glider first time having baby? what size of cage is he using? what diet is he feeding?

Stress, not enough food, handling the non/joey too much, presence of other animals...
many factor could contribute to it actually...

Hurm....what i know from my friend is,there is just another single female glider where place beside this pairing cage which just a feet gap.

I had read few articles in glider forum when a female felt stress also wont turn into cannibal killing joey worst to worst also just reject only.

Just as normal routine food feeding.

He say this is their 1st joey so didn't handle or touch before (1st time had joey by the female)

Could it cause by the female cage which put beside the cage?

the joey been eaten inside the cage.

only female and male inside the cage.

the single female separated due to young and waiting for another candidate to make pairing.

mattemily_85,

Maybe u can suggest your friend to join this forum as well? Or he can add any of the members here in facebook or chat messengers to explain thoroughly the situation.

Take notice that if the mother is still young, under 1 year old, due to inexperience, cannibalisation can occur - it is natural for mammals. And if it is her first joey, she may not have the confidence yet. Another situation is the mother notices a defect and her natural animal instincts forces her to kill the newborn.

Anyway, your friend needs to give more details coz many other factors involved - what food provided, what house provided, was one of the parents taking care of the newborn while the other went out for food, what is the room environment like... etc...

I guess the mother got threaten by sg next cage due differ smell, so if the newborn joey is sick or weak mother will eventually kill them as to prevent other predator approach oso protect her colony.

Based on the last line, your friend is trying to homebreed his gliders? (because it sounds that way)

The joeys born, were they the first joeys? Did he bought another new female glider or was she a part of the other 2 as a colony? If she was a part, her smell won't cause stress to the pair and in most cases in a colony, other gliders would help care of the joeys born.

i'm feeding slurp
i give 1 dubia(large juvenile) per glider...every 2 days..i alternate with mealworms and sometimes crickets...and also yogurt drops...can say eat 3-5 times a week...

for hpw diet which said to be high in protein i dunno how much insects hpw users feed...from what i remember they feed a lot less coz hpw got sufficient protein adi..but i think it contains soy protein if i'm not mistaken and also got egg protein..
