i saw someone selling in garage sales some SATA3 6Gbps cables. Are they really different compared to SATA2 cables, in terms of performance?
*
Current transfer speed is bottleneck by HDD max ability.
The max HDD speed is roughly 150MB/s, which nowhere near the SATA 2 max capacity.

Sata 2 & 3 make no difference for HDD, may be applicable for SSD only.

i never bought a desktop hard disk bfore n really wanna buy one...noob question, do i have to buy the SATA data cable separately or included in the hard disk purchase?
*
You only get HDD, no cable, be it Sata or Sata power cable.

how much HDD and RAM related.. i mean .. i used to have like 250gb hdd and 2gb ram.. it have smooth reading, copying, pasting

but recently ive add another 1 TB hardisk and the RAM still 2gb ,and sometimes the reading become slow, when i open a folder,it stall for 1,2 second before opening. does this mean i have to add more RAM? or RAM doesnt have to do with this at all
*
Not related.

Your 250GB highly is 7200 rpm or blue version (if WD)
And 1 TB mostly are green drive now, which is slower one than 7200rpm.

I think the higher platter density of the green drive should make up some of the performance loss from the rpm.
*
My green drive always goes to "sleep" one. biggrin.gif
Wake up need 1-2 second lag, which the symptom that the forumer complain.
Has nothing to do with read, I think.
More like the HDD being idle and park its head.

thanks for the feedback guys smile.gif ..i was about to add another RAM if its related somehow... is there any action i can make to make that 1TB hdd read faster
*
On the power option, set high performance option, don't let "HDD off".

The rest, you could do nothing except changing HDD (non-green drive) or change to SSD.

Strange enough why people even bother buying 1TB nowadays when the 103SJ is RM20 extra.
*
Apart from lowyat, outside of KL, sometimes, the availability of computer hardware is rather optionless.
Shops generally do not have many stocks or have lot of option especially for small town.
Take it or else go far far away to buy.

yesterday viewnet priced samsung sata 2TB HDD at RM329

seems like they keeping old stock to force price go up to maximum
*
When ask, most said may out of stock due to Thailand flooding.

When ask how much now, and agreed on new price, no problem to get it.

Now 1TB is RM280~ Almost RM100 increase! Kinda like day light robbery... but external HDD price still remain though (same or cheaper than internal)...
*
Then dismantle the external, sell off as internal, still can make extra profit... tongue.gif

I don't understand, how can external price remain the same, while internal one shoot up near RM100 per piece.

As most stocks available are still the old batch.

If internal price increase, so does external one.
They are using the same HDD.

Yes, I know current HDD price increase due to potential short supply, but external should follow suit as well.
How come external still remain roughly the same, while internal increase so much?

I feel March 2012 is a very optimistic estimate...I estimate could take 3-4 months extra cuz March is the time when they can start clearing backlogs in orders...
*
It is about expectation, speculation.
Just like currently, there is no shortage on HDD across, just some business expect/predict new supply will be disrupted and less, people start jacking up price.
And most shops current stocks are old batch and cheap one.

If 1-2 month later, Thailand flood receded and factory going to start back the production, you can see price start to soften.

Added on November 6, 2011, 12:25 pmBut no one knows the severe impact of the flood yet, as there is no clear sight the degree of damage.

Why mechanical-HDDs that are advertised as SATA2 3Gbps devices don't actually perform at that rate? I tried duplicating a file in the same drive and it was copying at 40MBps;
3Gbps is 375 MBps !

Its connected to my sata3 6Gbps ports - don't think this matters anyway
*
Sata 2 spec is the interface of the HDD, not the ability of HDD physical write or output.
