For the long run, take a good care of your harddisk health by
1. Provide adequate cooling 2. Stable power supply 3. Don't force it do heavy task to frequently (or too much) such as defrag and benchmarks. 4. Don't move it too frequent like external HDD. If possible try to avoid 3.5inch HDD as external drive 5. Never thrust cheap HDD casing/enclosures. Cheap adaptors (that can't stand power surge, unreliable power supply), poor cooling/ventilation and lousy circuit can kill your HDD faster. 6. Keep far from other electrostatic, electro magnetic, humidity or vibration source. 7. Manage your files: Create partitions for programs and backup files or better use dedicated HDD. 8. Place it horizontally or lying flat is better than vertically to reduce bearing wear. My HDDs (Samsung, Maxtor, Seagate and WD) can reach 1-2 years and currently the oldest HDD in my PC is a Seagate 320GB SATA bought in 2007. I change harddisk because of capacity upgrade, not because of replacing dying harddisk. The oldest is a Maxtor 80GB SATA since 2004 still running in my brother's PC. |

Getting better and better ...
QUOTE Seagate to acquire Samsung's HDD unit, 'strategic alignment' planned Seagate Technology and Samsung Electronics have just announced the signing of a major deal which will see them collaborate on multiple storage-related fronts. One major part of the deal will be Seagate's acquisition of Samsung's hard drive business for about $1.375 billion (50% cash / 50% stock). Beside the HDD unit buyout, the deal inked by the two companies states that: - Seagate and Samsung will extend their existing cross-license agreement - Samsung will supply Seagate with NAND Flash memory for its enterprise solid state drives (SSDs), solid state hybrid drives and other products - Seagate will supply Samsung with hard drives for its PCs and consumer electronics - the two will work together on developing new enterprise storage solutions - one Samsung executive will join Seagate's Board of Directors Due to the part-stock purchase agreed upon, Samsung will end up with a 9.6% stake in Seagate. According to the companies, this move will allow them to 'accelerate time-to-market for new products' and to 'better address rapidly evolving opportunities in markets including, but not limited to, mobile computing, cloud computing and solid state storage.' The transactions mentioned in the agreement are expected to be closed by the end of this year. Source: http://www.tcmagazine.com/tcm/news/misc/37...ignment-planned |
