One thing for sure, any uni you enter. it's based on how you cop with it.

Not to scared you guys, UNIMAS is very strict on education. If you get GPA less than 2.0, you might be stopped for a month, will be kicked if turut-turut for few times, if less than 2.5, your course selection will be limited. nod.gif

yes in english =) basically it's longer because you have 1 semester of industrial training. other uni might make it only 2 months (during semester holiday).. and correct me if im wrong, software engineering in unimas offer more subjects (an advantage).. then you also need to take up 3 elementary courses (from other/own faculty such as japanese language/business/finance/chemistry/engineering/music/hr..up to you) -- another added advantage. you must be glad that it takes 4 years.. uni life is great =D

Hi Hero.

Multimedia will be under FSGK (Fakulti Seni Gunaan Dan Kreatif).

Basically you gonna study things like creating 3D things, Avatar and multimedia related stuff. Well the job prospect is wide, but it's up to your performance, creativity, 99% hardworking spirit.

I personally think varsity is for us to add self value to ourselves such as getting higher pay(maybe), the future is ours. smile.gif

My advice to juniors, do take the generic courses earlier so that you can relax a bit for the rest of the years. If you can manage it.

I've heard about aquatic resources through my lecturer only. There was a guy who graduated from Unimas in this course but cannot find any job in M'sia, but guess what, he is now working in Dubai government. They need specialist to take intensive care of the aquatic and water there. He earns damn good biggrin.gif

There is none washing machine in Seroja Campus but if u are lazy to wash ur clothes, you can always go to the dorby outside of old campus. (just 10 mins walk) ^^

Normally u will met a lot of friend that will be willing to fetch u to airport. haha..
If not, sometime UNIMAS provide transport to airport after final exam.

not compulsory to have one.... but if u plan to apply for ptptn, u have too.... cuz ptptn will credit the loans to ur bank islam account. for ptptn holder,
course fees will be deducted automatically from ur bank islam account. if u're on ur own or other types of loans/sponsorships/scholarships, u have to go to bank
islam and pay.

hi... bunga raya resident here... basically, bunga raya is more like an apartment style. each apartment consists of : -

TWO 2 single bedrooms
THREE 3 double bedrooms
TWO 2 bathrooms
TWO 2 toilets
ONE 1 balcony
ONE 1 kitchen
ONE 1 store room
ONE 1 living room

so.... wat do u expect more??? hahahah smile.gif

as for laundry, there are THREE 3 laundry rooms. EACH have around 3-4 washing machines and 2 dryer machines
RM 3 each time

hi all,

laptop is a must for everyone irregardless of courses. U'll need that for assignments, programming, reading notes (mostly in pdf/powerpoint unless u print it out), entertainment (movies, games etc, will be hell boring without entertainment)....
u can always buy laptop in kuching... or u bring it from ur hometown smile.gif

It is not a must but a laptop is more convenient for students.
Normally first year student will stay in a double room. (2 per per room)

I dont think so for first year student. But u can write letter to office if u are not satisfy with that room or ur roommate. Then the staff will make an arrangement for u to have better stay.

When u move to 2nd year u can choose depends on what college u r in

From few of my friends, it will be more easier to change ur course within ur faculty. I am not sure what other course that ur fac offer. Becuz i m from different fac. U can check it from ur fac and frens.
What my fren did is they study for 1 semester first. After that they write letter to fac to change the course within the fac. Make sure ur pointer is high because it will be more easier to change.

it much depends actually if u wan to talk about the signal /speed/traffic and so on.. cuz it's getting more and more students applying
for broadband... hence, sometimes the signal might be very poor... but so far.. my friends were using digi, maxis and celcom... all also ok ok... smile.gif

for most of the seniors i believe they already done wif their course registration....
as for the freshies.... u have to register for core course first.. followed by the generic courses for instance bm/english/hubungan etnik/titas etc etc
but b careful on the credit hours... do ensure u can cope wif ur studies if u plan to take up to 22 credit hours... happy choosing smile.gif

hihi UPIT test is sor of the computer competency course... it's kinda easy... all objective questions on bacsic computing stuffs.
If u pass the UPIT test, u will be exempted from TMX 1010. HOwever if u fail the UPIT test, you are required to take the TMX1010 for this sem.
U have to keep on trying register for it.. IF realli cannot, make ur way to the office and tell them.

As for the car rental. YES. There is such service. There are plenty of car rental services in unimas. As for the charge it much depend what type of car
u want to rent for instance viva, myvi, kancil, proton saga, atos, etc etc..... Pricing depends... they charge by a day (24 hours) half day (12 hours) or by hours... like 3 hours, 2 hours or etc.....

ENJOY !!!!

Car rentals very simple one, just keep all the kereta sewa phone numbers. Sometimes you see their iklan at the kolej wall.
I skip UPIT test last time. What I find is that, TMX 1010 is so boring, but it really helps (depends on people) when i take TMX2. TMX 2 still compulsory right?

Different faculty? Approach office to obtain form to change the course in next year, around march I think, can't really remember.

After filling in, just wait. You will need to attach a few papers but the office should tell you what to attach.

If from different faculty, it will require approval from the Deans of both faculty.

I heard that you need to get dean list (>3.5) to change faculty. Less than 3.5 a bit difficult i guess. By the way, why engineering? smile.gif

Hi to all of you current and future UNIMAS students here. Greetings from an alumni.

I was browsing through lowyat's education threads and found a few threads here on the university.

First of all, like some of you here, I went there alone in 2004, 12 days after I received my letter of offer from UNIMAS. I am from a small town in Perak. It was my first time on a plane, first time to Sarawak, first one from my family to attend a tertiary education, and there to do a course I did not know anything of. I had no idea what to expect or anyone to tell me what to expect.

I couldnt say I wanted to go to a private college since my family had no money to send me there. The PTPTN cheque helped a lot to finance a lot of stuff especially the flight tickets. There was quite the bit of anxiety. But in the end, it all turned out fine. After getting used to the life there and being friends with students who are locals, things got great and I had a wonderful 3 years there.

The whole duration of my studies were at what you would now call the East Campus. The wooden buildings and lecture halls, the old CAIS and Dewan Unimas, the small food court, the simple gym, a field and a basketball court. I still miss the stall near the lake at the back of the campus as I feel they served one of the best nasi lemak I have had. As you can imagine, it was nothing like UM, UKM, USM, UPM or the like with its sprawling campuses and facilities. But that was 7 years ago. I guess the current and prospective students will be able to enjoy facilities that are nearer to those places since the new main campus is ready and with more facilities coming soon. I paid a visit to my lecturers last year at the new campus and it was really a nice and all modern.

But the main thing for students from the Peninsula, I feel it would be best to bring an open mind to Sarawak. It is Malaysia, but a different place and culture from where you came from. Taste the food, learn the difference types of etnicity, and be friendly. You will get an experience your peers would not be able to get from their universities in the Peninsula - a different cultural and character experience

Like many have said, your results in class will help you to get that important interview. A good CGPA MIGHT get your resume through the screening process, especially of a good company since they have no way to run through all the applications they get daily, other than maybe through cutting them according to their grades. But once you are in the interview room, it is up to you to convince them to give you the job. Which is why it is important to pay attention in class and take your presentations and exams seriously. They will be helpful to your job prospects.

But having said that, not getting great results does not mean it will be the end of the world. If you are resourceful, there are always ways and roads you can take. Many made it without a high CGPA too. But one thing is true. English is important. You do not necessarily have to be an A+ user of english (although it gives you an advantage) but, having a passable command of it will help tremendously for your confidence, which leads to better communication and generally the few inches ahead. Most of the students who did well in our faculty went on to be employed in good jobs. Some are in big companies doing good work and making good money, some in sales hitting their targets, and some got jobs in other countries too.

Congratulations! =D Enjoy ur uni life in Unimas later k. rclxms.gif To get u better picture about Unimas, at here 33% chinese, 20% indians, 44% are malays(+local ethnics) and the rest are international students. Also, lecturer at here are mostly master and phd holder. Lecturing is in English-based medium. Food and Beverages price are cheap and affordable (around RM3 to RM5 per plate). All facilities are modern. (for 1st year, the course subjects will be quite easy, so, the real deal is beginning of 2nd year) =D btw, welcome to Malaysia and feel the "Malaysia, truly Asia~" at here. (check on google, u will understand what i mean) happy.gif

Hi all. I was UNIMAS student graduated on year 2009. I would like to say to students there just enjoy your life and explore their culture and have fun. I enjoyed myself very much there as Sarawakians are very friendly. I' a banana and I got the chance to learn to speak mandarin for 3 years there and guess what...my mandarin are more fluent than canto! Sarawak is a beautiful place and I got chance to visit Bako Park, climbed Santubong hill, Damai Beach and etc. Cost of living there are moderate and I saved a lot since I stayed in hostel throughout my 3 yrs there. UNIMAS was my last choice since my CGPA not that good to apply the course I want so I put UNIMAS and UMS as 7th and 8th choice and I never regretted it! The only con is there u may not frequently bac to your own hometown and I felt happy that I able to spend my holidays with my hsemates, uni mates travel around sarawak rather than going back home. biggrin.gif

Hi, I got offer for Human Resource Development course. To all the seniors, can you give me more details about what to study about this course? May I know more about this University? Can show some pictures of the university environment, campus and hostel? Is there got any shopping center around? Thanks in advance.

Hi, I got offer for Human Resource Development course. To all the seniors, can you give me more details about what to study about this course? May I know more about this University? Can show some pictures of the university environment, campus and hostel? Is there got any shopping center around? Thanks in advance.

Congrats for getting into Unimas smile.gif

What you basically have to study in HRD are the management and psychology. Don't worry you will know more about it soon.

The picture above is one of the hostels in Unimas. There are Giant, Boulevard, The Spring which takes about 30 minutes to reach.

Every uni has its pros and cons. You might be skeptical at first but trust me, you will get used to unimas in no time. That place is huge. Plus, you have an apartment style hostel tongue.gif

You're from West Malaysia?

ohh, really? smile.gif Yup. I have seen some pictures from the uni. It seems that the U got modern building and facilities, is it true? I would also like to know that whether the flight ticket that we buy will be sponsor by government or ourselves? And is there going to be anyone to fetch us when we reach there, like the people in charge or seniors?

Yup. Modern building but lacks of colour.

Nope. You have to pay the flight ticket yourself and yes seniors will be welcoming you in the airport and take you to the uni by bus smile.gif

Yea HR. Up to now, I feel that it is good enough in terms of broadening my knowledge though some subjects you learn might not be relevant to the course itself.

Depends on your lecturer. You can wear baju kurung/collar tee+long pants, no shorts and formal attire during presentation.

Is it necessary to wear collar tee? Cos I've bought quite a lot of non-collar t-shirt.

Hi. I am your senior who have just graduated.

Teaching - Overall, the lecturers are good. I've had no complaints at all, although others might not agree. Bear in mind, we are university students, so be resourceful and don't expect high degree of spoonfeeding. If you take the initiative to look for the lecturers, they are always willing to help you out. In fact, the lecturers are very approachable.

Facilities - We have a computer lab with all the new computers (big screen!) for Mechanical students only. Back in my first year, the computers available weren't that many and new so we always had to wait or berebut so the new students are indeed very lucky. You guys will be having most of your lectures at the faculty's tutorial rooms or CTS's seminar rooms which both are new.

Environment - Very university-like. I never felt constrained or a lack of freedom. Expect many assignments, tutorials and lectures to attend in your first two years. After class, you can play sports or jog or involve in other activities to get to know more people.

I, for sure, am going to miss the wonderful people (esp my lecturers, lab technicians) I have met and the places I've spent the past 4 years.

Hi guys,
I am from KL and I just got international economy in UNIMAS. This is my first time I am leaving outside my comfort zone and I am kinda nervous. So, there is some question I would like to ask.
If I am going there, since we are on our own, is there any particular date? I want to start booking the ticket now, to get cheap airline ticket.
Then, since the attire is quite formal, will there be any restriction when we are in our hostel?
How about the food and student activities? Are we allowed to go out the campus anytime we want or there is a strick curfew?
Finally, the courses will be conducted in English, or Bahasa Malaysia?

Thanks in advance.

You're encouraged to wear collar tee. It's not a must.

Did you read the buku panduan? It's stated there.

Then, since the attire is quite formal, will there be any restriction when we are in our hostel?
You mean in the hostel compound? For guys, I don't think so. For girls, you are not allowed to wear shorts.

How about the food and student activities? Are we allowed to go out the campus anytime we want or there is a strick curfew?
There are cafes in every colleges. Yes, anytime you want. You have to be back by 12am or else the guards will ask for your details.

Finally, the courses will be conducted in English, or Bahasa Malaysia?
English.

Thanks in advance.

Hope this clear your doubts smile.gif

You're allowed to wear jeans to class but during your orientation week, you need to wear formal (blouse, slacks, formal shoes + black socks or baju kurung).

During orientation week, usually you only need to wear formal in the morning. In the evening or night, you need to wear semi-formal which is collar tee, slacks and formal shoes/sport shoes.

Don't worry. I'm sure they will inform everyone on that day

In the buku panduan, it stated that we need to apply 'dokumen perjalanan terhad' from Jabatan Imigresen Malaysia. What's that? Btw, do we need to do passport?

compare to first year, is it like 2 times harder than first year subjects? or is it because the students don't really have interest in it, so thats why they said its tough? notworthy.gif

I would say maybe they lack of interest, coz in IR, you've to think wider than usual, one needs to be critical in thinking. unfortunately, there're numbers were offered (aka lelong) and out of their 8 choices. read more before going to class. smile.gif dont worry smile.gif

I did not wear formal last time. Just a simple tee and long pants. Maybe that clinic sets the rules that way?

Hm, never heard of that rule. Any slacks is okay even ada/tanpa poket luar.

Newbie here! I got Cognitive Science! ..but I have some noob questions : icon_question.gif
1. how to book for hostel? There's no need to book for hostel. You will register for it when you reach.
2. since registration is on 1st & 2nd sept so is it okay to arrive on 2nd sept? ( im from west msia) Yes it is but you're encouraged to be there on 1st Sept cos there will be activities at night.
3. seriously there's gonna be ppl waiting at the airport to take students to uni? Yes. No worries!
4. is there alot of kes curi? (since some of my seniors from other unis told me about common kes curi laptops in their unis ) Depends. Nobody can curi your stuff if you keep them safely.

first time travelling to east msia  rclxub.gif BLUR.

Feel free to ask if you have more questions. Good luck! biggrin.gif

I'm wondering the same thing! In FSS, we called it communication studies, I believe its the same thing.
Yes. You can wear anything you want. Just no shorts and sleeveless. And wear formal during presentation!
Yes on saturday but not on sunday.
Nope. FSS usually finished earlier than other faculties. It can be 15th? 17th? We never know, have to wait for the final draft of exam schedule out first.

Yea. Your hair must be black during MAP. I heard that if you have your hair dyed, either you dye it back to black or you wear tudung.

Not that strict. You can just bring normal collar/non collar tees and jeans. Just a couple of formal attire.

There are cafes in each kolej so no worries. You have to bring your clothes to the washing machine downstairs to wash for RM3. If not, you can always hand wash smile.gif

You need to pay the fees first then only you can register because you need the reference number.

Internet - Wifi Available
Food - Available in every kolej-es and throughout the campus
ATM - RHB

Sha91 can give you a good tour around Cempaka biggrin.gif

I heard someone calling my name hmm.gif

register as student? you meant online registration? I couldn't remember how sweat.gif I think I paid the registration fees first .

Internet? Are you a guy or a girl?
It depends on where your room is located.

Food? We have ermm, burger stall, roti canai, chicken rice, some cucurs in the evening, and those lauk-pauk at both cafes ( cafe lelaki and cafe perempuan). you can go either one lah don't worry. Price? Some say its quite expensive, but to me its cheap ( as I kamceng with mak cik canteen brows.gif ) and actually depends on your lauk too.

Don't worry you can go to Lake View or student Pavilion for variety of food.

Atm? RHB at BHEP ( Bangunan Hal Ehwal Pelajar) and Bank Islam at Student Pavilion. I was damn happy when my friend said Maybank is going to open too but then, its nowhere to be seen. Soon, maybe. I saw the 'Maybank' thingy already.

Are you active?
We have 2 basketball courts, 1 netball cum futsal court. Stadium is like 1 minute walk from Cempaka. We have 1 olympic size swimming pool, about 4 to 5 tennis courts, around 6 to 8 badminton courts, about 6 squash courts etc etc all of these are situated at one place, which only 3 minutes walk from cempaka?

Done registering with the e-daftar, confirmed to go "oversea" to UNIMAS at 1 Sept (Excited).

Any senior can give me any information regarding the civil engineering course and the faculty of engineering? Really appreciate some early information.

And how's Kolej Allamanda looks like? I went to UNIMAS official website to have a glance but I was hoping to see more pictures of it.

Welcome to the Faculty of Engineering.

I can't comment much on civil engineering as I came from another department. But from what I noticed, civil engineering is relatively easy to score (despite the hectic-ness) so make sure you do well in assignments and tests.

About the quality, I must say very subjective. But as far I know, there are real good lecturers in the fac. there are numbers of MSc student in the fac as well smile.gif

Last year, the registration was based on first come first serve basis which means you and your friend need to register together if you want the same room but not sure about this year though.

Hello, I'm from Perak. Does anyone know whether my family members (accompanying me to UNIMAS) need to make their own Dokumen Perjalanan Terhad to enter Sarawak? And do they allow small rice cookers in the dorm? Thank you. smile.gif

when is the pendaftaran? on the 1st and 2nd? are you alone? because few unimas buses will wait for the students until the very last flight. so there's no need for you to come earlier, unless you want to jalan-jalan with your family nod.gif

haha I'm from kch, so I went on the registration day of course. reach earlier is ok as long as you register on the registration day laugh.gif

so you did this already, right? https://estudent.unimas.my/eDaftar/semakan/index.jsp

then what about this?
https://estudent.unimas.my/eDaftar/semakan/index.jsp

yes do it online. you should be able to do the pendaftaran by now. since the registration for college is just around the corner.

just isi sampai habis, once you have printed the slip, you're done.

Hello there. Which kolej you get? Cos the system is different for every kolej. But im sure that bumi will stay together with non-bumi but I have seen a few apartments which consist of only bumis so it depends. It doesn't matter actually, everybody is just the same whether they are bumis or not smile.gif

In Allamanda, the occupants of each apartment are always consisted of different races - Chinese/ Malay/ native Sarawakians. Sometimes a non-bumi student (Chinese/ Indian) will have a bumi (native Sarawakian) roommate. Nothing to be worried. It's all about tolerance and understanding.

Allamanda staffs are friendly. That kolej is meriah at night, you will see students hanging out under the trees/ on the benches bersembang unlike BRC or Cempaka which seem a bit too quiet for us.

You can refer to the Allamanda photos in FB group (link I posted in one of my earlier posts)

No, they don't provide iron/ kettle etc because this is not a hotel.

You can always buy them once you reach Sarawak. There is a koperasi in Allamanda (the prices are more expensive, I normally avoid it at all costs) or you can go to nearby Samarahan town to shop for the necessities. Or upgrade your luggage to more than 20kg.

i also get the offer for this special intake,i getting ekonomi perindustrian.
3. anyway,i just prepare a white shirt without any style on it,just like our secondary school shirt with long sleeve,i think this white shirt is only for the Majlis Inkrar Pelajar.after the majlis,we can wear any colour and style of shirt to classes,as long as "formal".
4. the 1st sem you only need to pay rm1530.the balance (2xxx-1530) pay on 2nd sem.
anyway,i got a question, izit the medium of instruction in unimas in english?
where is your kolej kediaman, mine one is kolej Kenanga,to senior, how is the environment over there?

searching all over the web,PALAPES stand for Pasukan Latihan Pegawai Simpanan, what is that???
maybe becoz we get the offer later than others,so that we are getting kenanga.

searching all over the web,PALAPES stand for Pasukan Latihan Pegawai Simpanan, what is that???
maybe becoz we get the offer later than others,so that we are getting kenanga.

Not sure about it but it is some kind of traning for students. Udara and Darat. It is not compulsary to join Palapes. Yes you need to do the medical check-ups before going to unimas cos it is compulsary for you to compile all the documents when you register.

askar2 thingy. its weird tho you guys have been offered kenanga college. maybe too many students. heard that its about 5 thousands of students for this september intake. or maybe medic student will be joining you guys sampai MAP then only they will be moved to kuching campus. then only you guys will be placed dekat cempaka, bunga raya etc etc?

er strict or not I have no idea.
ok its like this. you know kadet polis in school right? PALAPES (Udara&Darat) and SUKSIS ( this one is polis lah). Something like kadet polis in school, you will berkawad weekend and will be given allowance and you stay in kenanga until you finish your study. unlike cempaka, brc etc, if you're not active ( in college activities ) you will be kicked out. thats why I wonder why you guys will be placed in kenanga as kenanga college is reserved for PALAPES and SUKSIS.

which residential college then?
I heard that allamanda really strict. a friend of mine punya kawan, their house kena baling tahi I think, even though it was not their fault, pun kena kick out because got kesalahan haih. maybe due to too many students this september intake. even my friend kena kick out, she's from february intake. if cempaka, you can stay for 2 sem.

For Allamanda, once u are denda, u can kiss goodbye.  tongue.gif BUT there were many instances where students were forgiven after they merayu (especially guys).. I still think Allamanda was lenient. I don't know how things are now with the new pengetua though.
*
is it?but totally unrelated la my denda...i got my summon when i was not a resident of alamnda(during 1st sem)...but coming to 2nd sem i kena terima masuk alamnda...then becoz of my previous settle penalty i kena goal kick hrmmm...

the new temp pengetua is strict ooo

btw, im not sure whether its six months...but my seniors said it...actually my practical covers 1 sem = 12 credit hours....im from FCSIT

Iron yes, not sure about hair dryer though. If you're not active in your kolej activities then you can stay for one sem. If you're active, you will probably be able to stay till you graduate smile.gif

you still need the formal attires during the orientation and other activities. New student always wear smart but after awhile, they tend to follow the seniors wearing jeans to classes. lots and lots of them... brows.gif

Orientation week is the most tiring. You will only get to sleep for about 3-4 hours but that's ok-lah. What you usually do is walk, listen, do and sleep. In the morning till maybe about 2-3pm, the freshies need to walk to DeTar which is a big hall for ceramah (as usual). I fell asleep most of the time laugh.gif Then in the evening, you will have your kolej activities such as practicing cheers for competition, malam rumpun budaya etc. Btw, which kolej you get?

Yea you will be divided into groups then every group gets a chance to perform during mlm rumpun budaya. Not a must. Formal attire will do. Cempaka is the newest kolej and located in a strategic place. Can wake up later for class.

Be prepared for it. Not to scare you but I always heard from my friends that they could not cope with it so some of them tend to switch from Cognitive Science to HR. But fear not! Uni life is fun minus assignments, of cos smile.gif So no worries there pal.

Cognitive science is about how you use computer such as programming to learn about human body in terms of psychology, for instance, attention, by using FMRi technique, the computer will know what will happen to the blood flow of your brain when you look at different things.

You need to have a pure psychology undergraduate degree to pursue Clinical Psychology at the postgraduate level.

Not a senior for the course but then, I know quite a few lecturers/ex-lecturers from the place. It's called FEB. Faculty of Economics and Business. From what I know, all the business subjects will be taught in English. The lecturers emphasize strongly on English, including in the exams.

Job prospects? That is for you to choose. Finance, Sales, Marketing, Events etc etc.

Is UNIMAS Accounting course good?
I checked online, it has only four acca papers exemption and it does not have the privilege like other public unis to become a member of MIA after 3 years working experience. Do they matter?
Apart from that, can someone tells me what is the advantages and disadvantages to study Accounting in Unimas?

*I am helping a friend of mine to ask about this! Hopefully someone can give us some opinions! Thanks*
