I've just received resume checkup from Jobstreet. According to the consultant, if I have certificate, diploma, degree, and master. I only have to highlight the degree and master only. Should I?  hmm.gif
Yup, just University's Name, Degree, and Graduation Year will do. HR is not interested in the courses/projects you have done.

HR simply makes its assessment by those 3 factors? does not make sense. enlighten me plss..
i thought courses/projects kinda show strength/add relevance to the job applied
It is sufficient for me.
1) Is there a difference if a graduate comes from unknown university and ivy league university?
2) Without job experience whatever projects you have done in university will render you a noob.
3) Many things can be know from the year you graduate for example how long you had taken to do it.

We are graduating in half a year and one of my guy friends is starting to worry that he has no impressive resume. Other than having a CGPA >3.00, he wasn't that active at all with student activities. He didn't hold any important post in the swimming club he joined, he didn't represent the university in tournaments, he didn't volunteer in any charity works.. so needless to say, there was no award or achievement for him. Here comes the question - how is he going to polish up his resume? sad.gif
For me there is no diff from one fresh grad to another. What matters is how he present his resume and how he sell himself on the cover letter.

The thing is, there is nothing much he can sell himself.. since there was no active involvement in any student activities or social works, what is he going to brag/ talk about? Of course he can point out that he is diligent, outspoken etc but he can't back it up with any cert or evidence.
Not every fresh grad knows how to sell himself. The one who does will stand out. People here had give you some ideas you can take to your friend. Keep in mind also other also have almost the same thing. The key is who you can convince people to give you an interview. This kind of things is not easy to teach.

Hi all, may I know should I include irrelevant working experiences in my resume. It is a short term past time job.
I am a fresh grad and do not have any relevant working experience.
Or should I just leave the working experience blank?  unsure.gif
Thanks!
*

Too short term it best to leave blank as it does not help you.

Btw, is it necessary to put referees in the resume?
For me I dont care if a person has referees on the resume. They are bias anyway since the candidate themselves listed it.
Do you include referees? Yes, for the brainless HR people who go by the book.

I am not sure if they will exclude candidate who omit expected salary.
Those whose expected salary are too high get a call. If they are chosen for the job, negotiation begins.

hi just wanna ask

how many pages are resumes in malaysia? i used to work in an ibank, we are strict with a one-pager resume

is it any different here in malaysia? 2 or 3 pages perhaps?

thanks

I dont see anything wrong with one page resume. Back in the 80s, I believe I was the only person that do resume in 1 page and it always managed to get an interview.

should a resume include the professional logo in the heading if someone has attained the designation? will this get more attention from potential employer?
*
Provided your are entitled to use a professional logo, you can use it to your advantage.
As I know it, you can use the professional initials after your name but not necessary the log because you don't represent the professional body as a president or committee for official purpose.

I've been RIF/layoff by the company recently, so I am looking for a new job now, stick for a same company for 6 years has made me forgot on how to write a resume, anyway I just updated mine and put it online here:

http://azmawee.com/resume

I need someone to give me feedback of what do you think of my resume, need advice if something wrong and/or can forward to some company that have opening.

Thanks.
*
Impressive, your resume is good to go.
The only problem is why have you been chosen to RIF. This one doubt in prospective employes mind may cause you to lose point. You should address this doubt in your cover letter.

I think it would disadvantage you for reason you had mentioned yourself. I am sure you would like to bring it up to show you have some experience. I suggest you go around it. You can mention it is your dad's business and you help out daily. That paints a dutiful son image smile.gif
QUOTE(Striker07 @ Dec 4 2012, 11:04 PM)
I'd been freelancing as a graphic designer on and off during my student years. I also started a side business selling and designing shirts. My question is will including these two "other" experiences in my resume give me an advantage, or put me in a disadvantage?
What I'm worried is that the company will think that I might be prone to take up side jobs when I'm working for them.

Also, is it good practice to include an OBJECTIVE section in the resume? Many U.S. based websites encourage this, but I'm wondering if it's same for Malaysia.
*
Yes, objective had been an essential item for resume in Malaysia (long before your were born) since very early 1980.
