Hi samurai,
I just wanna correct something, hope you dont mind. In laguna Redang, they do have PADI open water course, but you have to go and register the course at the dive center. normally it take about 4 days to complete the course. I took my open water course license there.

planning to go pulau perhentian.. so i wonder:
1) is it too wasteful just to go snorkeling there only and not scuba?
2) for scuba diving they got provide power mask?
3) been to redang, anything worthy in perhentian?
*
Hi, i notice no one answer you =D

1) 1st of all, i would like to say, Not to say wasteful just to go snorkelling, scuba diving make opportunities to let you breathe underwater and swim with a fishes, turtle, stingray. Its a totally different experience for those that never tried before. what you see in scuba diving doesn't mean that you cant see in snorkeling, but just that, you can see clearly and feel like you are one of them in underwater

2) For scuba diving, some of the dive center provide power mask, if you would like to sign up for the scuba diving Open water course, the basic gear you need to have is a mask and snorkel.

3) Redang and Perhentian is not to say much different. they both have resort, corals, and fishes. and not to be miss (chicks) drool.gif But mostly ppl go to perhentian to relax, or scuba dive. Redang mostly for lepak, and gathering with friends. and also diving.

Thank you very much Juniorkirk  notworthy.gif ..For agent package ,they give only snorkeling and diving package. The Resort not  mentions about PADI open water course. How much they charge you to complete the PADI course.?
*
Hi samurai,
No problem, just my few cents... i dont remember how much i took the open water course already. because i got it directly from the dive center itself. biggrin.gif

For those that interested in taking up diving courses.
there're many institution that provide diving course. PADI, SSI, NAUI, and SDI. Basically PADI is the most known and famous one. but that doesnt mean that other is not good, because most of the institution more or less is the same.

For those who need further information about diving courses can PM me for more advice.

power mask is like contact lens ma... cannot wear same power as your spec one... another way to save money is to bring your own google(swimming one) and u can get the snorkel from them. but u will get water flowing in your nose if you cant get used to it..

the mask that snorkelling use is the same as diving use. so if you are looking for those mask can straight away go to those dive shop and find lor... without power less than 100 got already... For the power mask, they sell by the lens, one lens is about RM 150-200, so with the lens come up about 400-500 so not worth it lor... unless snorkelling is your 2nd hobby. biggrin.gif

those that sold in giant is used to "bluff small kids", maybe u can use in swimming pool, but not in deep sea.(no offence) but if u are looking forward to get into diving, might as well invest in the a mask. not only u can use in snorkeling also in diving. i know one place in USJ they carries a good quality of mask used for diving with a affordable price, i got mine about RM 70, and have been using till now...

My thinking about dicapac, for snorkeling, i think its no problem with it. i've seen many ppl used in redang island before. but if u wish to go into diving, i would recommend that you get ur camera's marine casing rather than dicapac, as it doesn't seem reliable. Just my 2 cents of opinion.

Hi, since there's always been so many question about redang island...
- When is the best time to visit?
- When is the Peak season?
- When is the best weather?
- When is the cheapest?

I decided to share some of my personal experience during my visit to Redang Island last year as a "visitor"

22-24 February 2008 Laguna Redang (1st batch 2008)
user posted imageuser posted image
- 1st batch of 2008 to visit laguna
- merang jetty -> redang island = the strong wave cover our whole ferry(is a good experience u know?, anyone went during the same date?) , baggage infront the boat all wet, ppl in the boat were vomiting badly, air-cond + vomit smell... icon_question.gif and it take almost 1 and half hour to reach u know.
- reach laguna, everyone like sick. the best thing u can get is to check in the hotel right away, cause we are the 1st batch.
- walk infront the beach. please refer to the picture.
- went in the room, bath.. and go diving, the current is strong and visibility is less than 1m, couldnt see anything. please refer to the picture is a turtle tongue.gif
- 2nd day. raining. wasted whole day... hahaha....

2nd visit to redang
20-23 May 2008 Redang Bay
user posted imageuser posted image

- Weather is much more better.
- crowded.
- chicks-a-dees drool.gif
- nothing much, is much many more better than previous trip.

3rd visit to redang
16-19 June 2009 Redang Bay
user posted imageuser posted image

- weather is much more better
- crowded with more chicks
- Best month to come brows.gif

4th and last visit to redang
12-14 July 2008 Laguna Redang
user posted imageuser posted image

- best time to come if you would like a good weather,
- not crowded.

Note: Picture are taken by the date of the trip. Not i purposly show the best picture. can check the date using EXIF viewer(if u are free). Just to show u guys when is the best date to go, based on my personal experience.

dear samurai...............
will u suggest a resort for me.........

1.  prefer quiet place......but not too quiet.....hows the disco at holliday villa?.......is it too noisy......?read some good review about the resort but the disco make me think again coz i will bring my 6 month old child along........what about laguna garden view........can we hear the disco from the room......?
2.  easy to dine.........which one will be easier....ala carte or buffet style....?...........
wanna go there as my last year plan had to cancel due to my wife pregnant.............
*
my 2 cents...
the best place is the holiday villa, if you notice, its located at the other end of the long beach, while redang laguna there is the another end.... but sometimes its too quiet, so why not u find some resort that is located in the middle? such as redang bay, pelangi.. and etc etc.

About laguna, laguna disco is indoor disco, not like redang beach where is open beach disco. about laguna's garden view room. most of the room are garden view, except those that is in front of the sea(sea view), swimming pool(pool view) other is garden view, while standard room is on top of dive center. smile.gif

so if you would like a more quiet environment. i would suggest you ask your travel agent to request for quiet room...that is located at further in, but cons is that you have to walk a pretty long way... when its breakfast, lunch, and dinner. imagine walking with a empty stomach sad.gif ....

normally redang's packages comes along with foods... drool.gif Laguna is everyday, every meal.. buffet style. unlike other resorts, they have normal ala carte type lunch(bay)... normal dinner, and bbq dinner(they cook u eat). that includes that laguna have bbq buffet also... but food wise... i would rate Laguna redang as 4 star. one of the best in redang... anyone would like to share some of their experiences of foods and drinks in redang?.... but the best ice kacang in redang is redang bay. the best fried chicken is redang reef...

come ppl come... share more about your personal experience.... brows.gif

Hello,
I'm planning to go to perhentian besar for 3D2N (between 2nd-6rd march).
2 person...
Trying to get free & easy package(excluding meals)..
Sea-view, aircond chalet..
Coral view is 1 of my choice.
shallow beach..
can i just go there and take a room, or should i book now..?
Mr. Samurai, any recommendation?
I planed to drive from KL at midnight, so can reach Kuala Besut in morning(dun like bus T_T). Is it a good idea? Some ppl advice me to stay at a hotel in terengganu, so i can drive in daylight.. But that will take more $$$ from my dompet..zzz
and most important thing is the costt? including gas from to KL, accommodation and all..  My bugdet is not more than RM1500...

hope u guys can help me smile.gif
*
Hi,
Just a rough one from me...

From KL - Kuala Besut

Gombak Toll - RM 5
Bentong Toll - RM 3
Karak -> Kuantan exit - RM 19.60

Toll about RM 28
Petrol about RM 160
Parking about RM 5-10/night, park at mr.samurai's place FOC icon_rolleyes.gif
-------------------------------------------

From KL - Kuantan - Coaster Road - Kuala Besut (this is my usual route)

Night drive - Within 6-7 hours u can reach, including tea-break, toilet break.

Day Drive - About 8 hours, daytime lots of lorries, truck & car using the coaster road.

Both also depends on your driving. you can even reach KT in 4.5 hours (proven by me)
--------------------------------------------

Distance about 700 KM, do your kilometers calculation and then you will know. If you using gas, hmm.gif maybe need to refill about 4 x RM 9 (13 litres of NGV), there's not many gas station available on the way.

--------------------------------------------
My personal advise, if you are used to drive at night (long distance), then go for it, because for some part of the road is in totally darkness, with no vehicle at night, advantage of driving at daytime 1) lesser traffic 2) shade from hot sun. 3) no speed trap rclxms.gif ... doens't mean you can drive fast ok ? normally there're about 3-4 roadblock at night.

Just my 2 cents... icon_rolleyes.gif

The resort will charge RM50 for 1 trip snorkeling trips. But its depends which resort you staying.

There no Town or City or Metropolitan at Redang Island  tongue.gif ..just a small kampong with small airport,Police Station,School,Restaurant and jetty. The island have 24 hour electricity and clean water from Mainland.

Coming soon..i will going to Berjaya Redang  smile.gif

Boat transfer from Syahbandar Jetty to Redang Island.Return fare RM110.00 per person

By calling small airport really a joke to me.. laugh.gif ... It don't even worth a small for me... Let's change, redang's airstrip... sound nicer right? tongue.gif Building jetty in redang is illegal... but somehow, somewhere, someplace... whistling.gif

electricity from mainland? not from generator kah... brows.gif
