nah, azazel's point is totally legit.

it is much more convenient for keepers to just release animals into the wild rather than face legal consequences. plain and simple.

if they (wildlife people) had any idea on the real issue at hand, they would've figured out that much by now.

besides, who cares about some kids making RM10 out of a boxie when it can save their asses thousands of RM?

CITES, for most part, is overrated. yniphora is critically endangered, yes, but not because of pet trade, but rather out of shrinking habitat.

if not for those so-called smugglers and self-funded illegal breeders, some of the world's most endangered species would've perished in their own native range due to development, deforestation etc.

that is a fact that perhilitan could never understand, given their rate of failure in ex-situ breeding and their lack of interest to initiate any serious one with the reptiles, even with government funding.

guys, please. profanity is not tolerated here.

username jamestan had posted WTS/WTB posts 3 times in this thread and all those posts had been deleted out of necessity.

wpp188's question is discreet enough, it's not an advertisement. general questions like recommendations for sellers don't fall under the WTA/WTB/WTS rule. in fact, we can all freely discuss sources of good pets, good supplements, etc as long as they do not involve advertisements.

fyi and thank you.

the common diet i see after reading this TTT forum from V1 to V5. kangkong, kacang panjang & sawi.

*
that's the common wrong diet LOL

beans contain too much protein, which would cause abnormal growth of shells and keratin parts (beak, nails). there was one sorry SOB from back then who intentionally fed his tortoises with beans just because he likes pyramiding.

ideally, they should be fed with high-fibered plant parts - grass, hibiscus, opuntia (go for spineless/glochidless species such as cochenillifera, ellisiana etc or those with few spines like ficus-indica, robusta, reticulata etc), dandelion, clovers etc.

since most keepers are too busy (read: lazy) to provide those, they improvise by providing mixed market green. adding some hay to the mix would be most beneficial. grass, any kind/mix would be ok as they are naturally grazers (just avoid alfalfa sprouts).

and of course supplements - calcium, D3 (depends on exposure to sunlight/uvb), vitamins etc to compliment their diet.

hideout is for the pleco, not the res.

anyway, don't take tolerance between animals for granted - those animals can hurt one another, by intention or by accident. and plecos are known to be such nuisance - chewing off cables, suction-cupping the underbellies of companion animals, etc.

saying all that, you can try whatever you see fit, at your own risk.

so just wanna know whether anyone else here who has the Malayan Box Turtle, maybe i can learn few additional stuff?

officially, it's a CITES II animal, which means that special permit would be needed to keep them under INTESA.

unofficially, besides that caresheet, try reading other caresheets as well, especially entries on lighting, UVB, parasite treatment for wild caught turtles, captive stress etc.

1stly, give the previous owner a spanking

as for the question, try introducing new food (in this case, hay) to its diet bit by bit - e.g. 30% chopped hay mixed (important!) with 70% bean for first meal, 40% chopped hay, 60% bean for second meal, and so on in small increments.

as for its preference for bean, don't give it a damn.

QUOTE(SAMPERTH @ Jun 11 2010, 01:02 PM)
Is there a haul recently in KLIA or LCCT ?? Just read today in my local newspaper the said haul include
- a Yniphora
- a dozen or so Spider Tortoise
- a few hundred Radiated

Most important of all in that piece of news mention about the 28th June thingy
- They the wildlife department says its the 29th
- That certain mentioned tortoise sp ie Indian Star , Radiated , Angonoka will be confiscated upon declaration NO LICENSE will be issued !!

Any one can verify on whats allowed and whats not upon exposing ourself to the department ??
*
I can verify that State Directors, who are supposed to issue the special permission letter, do not have any clear directives from the Ministry of Natural Resources. So far, they do not know what to do upon receiving applications (format of the letter, etc)

As for the animals, they will be examined before any special permissions are issued (husbandry, conditions, etc). And strictly for private keepers, not traders. What's allowed and what's not allowed eludes me, except the fact that everything that falls under Act 76 and Act 317 won't be issued any letter as they are bound to the age old rules.

Sam, do you have the news clippings/links to said news? I saw the confiscation thingy yesterday but am not aware that Indian Star , Radiated , Angonoka will be confiscated upon declaration NO LICENSE will be issued !!. thanks.

Can these people actually raid our home? Let's say they ring on bell, we go quickly hide the animals, will they turn our whole house upside down, or will they just storm into our home? What rights do they have to do that? They need to get a search permit, get the police, etc etc.
*
according to Article 24 of Act 686 (damn.. so long to type) enforcement officers can ransack our premises without warrant. sounds too extreme, right?

Few have read these :

Good luck keepers. Think its time to pick up everything and tie up the loose ends? The hobby is in dire need for a vocally talented politician.  flex.gif
