The below is LX3 vs Sony DSLR A200 iso test

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

LX3 , f/2.8 , 60mm , iso400 (photoshop reduce noise, still retain more details than a200)A200, f/5.6 , 60mm , iso1600
LX3 , f/2.8 , 60mm , iso400

LX3 can perform just as good A200 in low light, @ lower ISO and bigger apperture.

Rumours of LX3

Lx3 to be discontinue on april 2009 due to economy down.Panasonic aint making money with the lx3 coz producing the best camera out from the company.

http://www.1001noisycameras.com/2009/02/wh...s-in-april.html

LX3 Secret Menu to check camera info and error

To show the logged error codes and also the internal history of counts of camera actions, follow this procedure....

1. Get the camera into an initial state where it can be made to get to those other information displays by turning the camera on in Record mode with the dial at P while holding down Focus and Up (cursor button) buttons. The camera will turn on like normal and tell you to remove the lens cap if you haven't already.

2. Now to get to the interesting bits, press Focus, Menu/Set, and Left (cursor button) all three together. The camera now cycles though three different displays each time you press the three buttons together. Normal > Error Code Log > Operation History Counts > Normal > etc

Power camera off to reset to normal operation from then on.

The Error Codes really are the work of a service person to make sense of, the explanation is in the Service Manual but without spare parts or adjustment procedures then it is a "back to service" job to fix errors that do appear if your camera is misbehaving. Mine shows all zeros at the moment.

The Operation History Count is much more interesting and so far the only one that I know is the SHTCNT: figure, that is the actual shot count of the camera from birth or from last mainboard replacement I guess.

The Operation History Count display on mine shows:

Camera Info
Ver 1.20 : 0000 : 0108 (obviously firmware level followed by ??)
No: xxx (long number displayed, maybe the main board serial number?)
PWRCNT: 1341 (I guess the number of times camera turned on, seems about right and does increment after each turn on/off)
SHTCNT: 4575 (the true camera total shot count, only reset by some internal service operation like replacing parts)
STBCNT: 111 (the flash count, number of shots with flash)
PSVCNT: 1 (number of times the auto power off has actuated)

i like this method. open up ur photo collection in lightroom (or any software that can do non-destructive editing)... pick a photo n experiment with crop n rotate. do this a lot then try to apply it in ur shooting. i know this is vague, but photography IS vague right? tongue.gif

nowadays the fake LX3 "genuine" leather pouch happen to appear in the market.

since it is a fake one, it looks like the genuine leather case and people take it as a real one.

@autobracket

+1 = 3 step extra, -1 = 3 step lower, +0 = normal
Usually I do it when I am uncertain of the exposure, or intend to do HDR

@aperture
big = higher depth of field
small = lower depth of field

exposure = change ISO, apperture, shuttle speed, basically everything in photography is related to it

IINM when setting to auto bracket, u get to choose to use 1/3 and -1/3, 2/3 and -2/3, 1 and -1 and so on until 3 and -3. then the camera will let u take 3 pics.

so lets say u set to 1 and -1, the 1st pic u shoot is normal exposure at 0 EV. after u snap, the settings will automatically change to 1 EV. after u snap again, it'll change to -1 EV. so snap again. all in all u'll snap 3 times, but only have to set the exposure bracket once

im not sure with the order but that's how i remember it. my gf borrow my LX3 for a while so i cant check hehe. IINM after the 3rd snap, it will merge the 3 pics

Essentials about the DxOMark Sensor scale:

DxOMark Sensor measures only the RAW image quality of a digital camera; therefore, DxOMark Sensor is NOT an evaluation of overall camera image quality or performance.
DxO Mark Sensor is a logarithmic scale in which a 5-point increase corresponds to a sensitivity gain of 1/3 of a stop.
Resolution is NOT factored into the DxOMark Sensor ranking.

At the mode dial there, you can see P,A,S,M modes right?Choose "S" which stands for shutter priority

This will allow you to control only the shutter speed settings. At fast shutter speeds like 1/120 sec+,you can "freeze" a fast moving object smile.gif

I almost never use S mode before, Usually adjust F to achieve desirable shuttle speed, or bump or drop ISO.

Anyone into scenary photography? let's go one place one day =) (like hiking too, so let's make it 2 in 1)

I shot tis one with fast shutter speed wit external flash.

I usually use "M" (Manual). But u can try out the "S" (Shutter Speed Priority), the number show in yellow is actually how many "seconds" ur shutter going to open, if the subject is moving, use a faster shutter so there wont be Ghost effect and remember to get a well lighted place, prefered daylight. if night, u'll need to pop up ur flash, cover it up with some layers of tissue as diffuser.

Ive just tried S mode. Seems good.. HAve yet to explore...
M seems harder with so many modes.. Btw why do we need tissue as diffuser for flash? sorry noob here

Anyway if u guys happen to drop by panasonic booth this saturday can u guys check out if there is any promotion for battery and post on the thread? i might drop by on sunday to buy.. But if its too much of a hassle then its ok..just ignore this =)

Tissue is used to "diffuse" or soften the flash so that it wouldn't be so harsh to your pictures. And it creates shadows too smile.gif

Edit: That's the exposure count.Try increasing/decreasing it .Do you notice that when you increase it, your pictures becomes brighter?Vice versa.

Bounce flash vs normal flash

i feel not diffuse nicer here.. is all the use of flash skill.. but shooting moving pet best is to have flash pop up or external attach.. better lighting and speed also!

Due to popularity of the cameras, it's kinda hard to find a 2nd Lx-3 in the second hand market, unless the second hand unit itself is selling at a price near to retail. My suggestion would to stop waiting and grab one now as god knows how long you have to wait for a decent and cheap LX3 to surface at the market, and even so, whether you have the chance to grab it.

Just bought LX3 (black) on yesterday night.
Wow the manual is about 210 pages.
Cannot imagine how many days are needed to finish reading it.

the LX3 enthusiast gathering at MV today is a big failure and the disappointment is soo bad to me. None of the people in the list show up (Sky.live did came but since nobody is coming, it doesn't happen lar)

Let's hope Sunday one would be better. If not, I'll quit organizing events.... -.-"

Sunday gathering will start at 4pm, if possible, u guys meet up earlier at DCIM first as I'll be coming ASAP from Sepang Circuit. Will have dinner together for sure. My number is 016-3381986. Pls do drop down ur handphone number so everybody can call each others. smile.gif

if the box is sealed, it's new. Panasonic lumix camera has a security seal sticker on the opening of the box. The camera usually comes with the latest firmware, if not just DIY lar. biggrin.gif

there's reports tat new LX3 now comes wit firmware ver 2.2, it started around late April so on.

Don't worry, Panasonic secretly put it in the new LX3 and haven't release the fw update for us old LX3 users.

Wanna ask you guys, how you store / take care of your LX3?
And, can LX3 change sharpness, saturation, etc?
It seems I can't find it in the function menu.

yup i use flash bounce with diffuser from angle, some i borrow other's flash spam, use fast shutter speed of 1/800 to 1/1200, no reflector as its a live event, and most models already has warm studio spot light from an angle, my flash actually acts macam change white blance tone and fill the overal shadow on face, my first time shoot though on portrait, didnt expect to turn out good or not i just keep spamming shots hahaha, me got 16gb + 4gb cards and 2 battery pack hehehe..

I nearly bought Canon S90 when the sales person recommend me to get the Lumix LX3 instead. And after doing some research, its trully indeed a better camera.
I was quoted RM1599 (panasonic 8gb+screen protecter+pouch) at MV. Is this a good price? Not sure to get it this week or to wait for the much anticipated LX4...

Slightly expensive in my opinion, depends on which pouch they gave you. But stock availability might be very limited tho.

S90 is comparable with LX3 I would say, but since you asked in LX3 thread off course all of us had made up our mind with LX3 and many gone through stage like you S90 VS LX3

I have no idea where my sister is haha, not familiar with Sabah lately, so much development. I hope Lumix can come out new line camera with the new sensor Sony and Samsung anticipating. Lumix always have so much excitement when it comes to product launch.

I am holding back against the idea of getting GF1 now haha

Me too...was considering between S90 and LX3 before i bought the latter.

LX3 has a fast F2.0,24mm wide angled lens, leica lens thumbup.gif ,HD video recording and the feel is so much better rclxms.gif

http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/17/samsung...culates-a-kore/

Wow F1.8 drool.gif even better for bokeh drool.gif blerk, doubt its Image quality will beat LX3 anyway biggrin.gif

tis is Panorama. You can do it wit any cameras. Techniques is to stitch whole rolls of photos together from left to right, or left to right. smile.gif u'll need a steady tripod to do it.

Added on May 21, 2010, 2:13 pmFor LX3 battery, I recommend u get the Ricoh battery from Yamiya.com.my, best value.

I was shooting pictures during my grandma's birthday. Was struggling with "Manual exposure"...using ISO 200, widest aperture of F2.0 and a slow shutter speed of around 1/12

I wanted a higher shutter speed(photo will be blur due to people moving doh.gif ) but it will be very under exposed and i didn't want to use flash, any idea?Increasing the ISO to aroudn 400 is a big NO because there would be visible noise *sigh*

I think you should try up to 3200 and have a print on it .

It may be obvious on your lcd, but still good for standard size photo print

or try black and white at 3200 , nice pic no blurring more nostalgic and less concern about noise

any way which way you prefer blur or not .........

hmm honestly i see those two pic seems more like influence of the indoor lights colour temp more than effect of flash bounce, imho, i think u just take those with decent exposure and well balance noise/iso, then apply colour filter in adobe or correct the white balance then, snap on raw for better leg room of editing..

actually i learn alot from editing when setting my manual shots now, eg, when u edit exposure or white balance no in a raw pic , write down notes on the everage settings need for shots on tat environment, then next time u can have spot on settings with more exp, i do the same on auto AI shots, snap snap snap, then see exif and from the no: i play around it next time i shoot in manual mode, faster learning process. imho...

I doubt this as well. But he said can provide 1month warranty from the shop. Btw, the price is attractive if it is original. rm 130

just bought a LX3 last week from Sg. Wang CamWorld.

RM1560 with Pana 8gb SDHC & Silicon Screen Protector.

I doubt this as well. But he said can provide 1month warranty from the shop. Btw, the price is attractive if it is original. rm 130

So anyone know the answer?
*
orginal battery for LX3 is Rm130 and it has no warranty from panasonic malaysia.

the shop is giving 1 month individual warranty so that the deal can be easily closed.

Hello peeps!

Just got my brand new LX3 and loving it so much (of course I'm just a beginner so I hope to learn from all the sifu's here).

Bought the LX3 at One Utama (brand new in box not open yet) at RM1630 with 8gb Toshiba SDHC,screen protector and Lumix camera hard case pouch, guess I paid a lil more but most importanty I know I'm getting one of the best camera in the market. yeehaaa! rclxm9.gif

Will start by using IA mode first then slowly will learn how to take manual shots. Looking forward to learn more!

lol LX3 is a compact camera while GF-1 is a micro four thirds system.Of course GF-1 will beat LX3 in Image Quality any time since m43's sensor size is so much bigger than LX3's 1/1.63".
GF-1 has interchangeable lenses like DSLRs while LX3 doesn't have it

But but but...LX3 is RM1.5K while GF-1 is RM3K++ brows.gif Apa lu mau? brows.gif

But better if you try out both and see which you like smile.gif

hmm honestly i see those two pic seems more like influence of the indoor lights colour temp more than effect of flash bounce, imho, i think u just take those with decent exposure and well balance noise/iso, then apply colour filter in adobe or correct the white balance then, snap on raw for better leg room of editing..

actually i learn alot from editing when setting my manual shots now, eg, when u edit exposure or white balance no in a raw pic , write down notes on the everage settings need for shots on tat environment, then next time u can have spot on settings with more exp, i do the same on auto AI shots, snap snap snap, then see exif and from the no: i play around it next time i shoot in manual mode, faster learning process. imho...

well if you REALLY want to learn photography, go for LX3.

the manual settings thingy really help you learn what is ISO, aperture, shutter speed etc.

Just got the LX3 2 days back. It was once my dream compact camera and i decided to give it a try.

Because i am still new in it, i cant comment much on it yet on the performance (which should be good). But i thing for sure is that i am kinda regret getting it and keep thinking bout the S90. It's much compact, and much flexible.

The problem is i already have Alpha with me. So i don't need those kinda hot shoe thing (which sorry to say...it's meant to be "compact", so big flash and convertors will only go to my Alpha). And this is just a daily second camera. Am i making the wrong choice? Maybe it was a horrible rush choice..Not to say the camera is bad, just not really fit into my purpose..(looking for something more compact yet feature rich)

I think i will sell it within 1 month and get the S90 instead... sigh..

I think i will sell it within 1 month and get the S90 instead... sigh..

If you are still worried what flash to get, get the nissin di466 m4/3 version.

Got it for rm360. Very hassle free and point and shoot. Still playing with the bounce flash though. Always getting dark images >.<.

Working on both my e-p1 and lx3

Mind posting some pics of the Di466 mounted to your LX3 here?

Is it swivel head type?

hello smile.gif I would like to know which Aperture mode settings do you guys use for bright colours with a tad of contrast. as we all know the flash of the LX3 can be abit too bright and it really white-washes all of my pictures.

I actually thought of sticking a small piece of scotch tape to diffuse the flash lol.

You could try dynamic mode, mine is vibrant tongue.gif Anyway, you can set the saturation/contrast/sharpness for each setting

How about film can diffuser? For me, i'll use tissue paper and wrap it around the flash laugh.gif

Well my friend asked about the LX3 and i think the deal is quite good:
RM1599+goodies like leather casing, discount card, 4+2GB memory card & camera stand. Anyone knows where I can get such deal???

Thx!!!

The deal is only good because the leather casing is provided.Otherwise, you can pretty much get the standard package with 4GB SHDC for RM1480 in LYP/BB/Sungei Wang.

Don't worry,Panasonic Malaysia will surely offer this deal again in the upcoming events.Last time, they told me that the leather casing offer is only exclusive to PC FAIR deals, but it surfaced again during the recent DCIM 2010.Now, it's back again in the Mid Valley promo biggrin.gif

True.. I'm in that dillemma also and while I understand compromises.. it's really hard to justify lugging a "bridge" camera if already using a decent compact.

Di466 seems to be able to work.I did ask a few shops, but not too sure about Di622.Di622 would be a very good flashgun as it can compete with the likes of Canon Speedlite flashes and when you upgrade from your LX3, you don't need to get another flashgun rclxms.gif

*sigh*

You can also opt for a Falcon Eye flash from our fellow forummer laichong smile.gif

@xdeer The trick to get a nice shallow DOF is to use the widest aperture possible, which is F2.0 on our LX3,coupled with a high shutter speed like 1/80.You'll notice that there's more bokeh smile.gif

they are changing to whole lens unit which cause round RM600 to repair..
my lens got problem once (lens shutter/aperture unit wont open when i turn on, so all i see is black)..they changed a new lens unit for me and the lady at the centre said it's worth RM600something..
i would still recommend you to go back to panasonic as they are "trained" in repairing panasonic items.

Last time I also face the same problem when I accidentally drop my LX3 and then its lense won't open. All I can see at the back is a black.
But after a week, it get back to normal...phew..save me rm600.00.

they are changing to whole lens unit which cause round RM600 to repair..
my lens got problem once (lens shutter/aperture unit wont open when i turn on, so all i see is black)..they changed a new lens unit for me and the lady at the centre said it's worth RM600something..
i would still recommend you to go back to panasonic as they are "trained" in repairing panasonic items.

Some cheapo Cybertik brand, but costs rm500 and fires pretty powerfully and allows full manual control over power and zoom plus swivel and rotate! drool.gif

How much you got your nissin? Got mine at DCIM for rm370. 400 plus for the white model but I didn't care tongue.gif.

Without the swivel kinda makes it hard to do proper flash bounce besides using the built in card.

Overall, Cheap flash and better then paying RM400-500 more for the Olly FL50

yeap the cybertik is practically the same thing, cept that i got the Canon version and TTL doesn't work which means full manual at all times. And i've also bought a 3-years extended warranty coz apparently according to the salesman, 3 out of 10 of these units comes back for warranty for zoom stuck problems. ANd i'm already starting to experience it. Occasionally, when you turn the camera on, the zoom will get stuck and make a lot of scary mechanical noises and refuses to let you use it until you turn it off and on again and hopefully it won't get stuck during its test-zoom phase. rclxub.gif

Yea, the headphone is awesome laugh.gif

It's a darn good camera to learn in my opinion. Leaving it at Auto is just fine. Finding the use of the different format ratio is great. Learning to use its low light function and buying an external flash makes you a pro tongue.gif.

In short, perfectly fine for beginners who wants to go pro. But if you are more into travelling, I suggest the TZ10 camera with 10X. LX3 only has 2.5X

Last I saw was about 1450 on some one else thread here. Try iamsobloodysick thread.

Anyway on to bigger news, the LX5!

Almost solid news here

I was hopping a Lumix version of Leica X1 (APS-C sensor in a compact). The news read its a compact (unknown size) with a electronic viewfinder capable of tilting.

QUOTE
Very important: The Panasonic LX5 is not the compact Panasonic camera with FourThirds sensor we told you about yesterday! It is a different compact camera with small sensor (we don’t know yet the exact size of the sensor). Trusted sources told us the Panasonic LX5 should be announced before Photokina. A source just sent us following infos about that camera:

“The viewfinder is electronic and you can tilt it 90 degrees. it’s pretty small, so it doesn’t suddenly make the camera too bulky. It comes with its own small pouch you can attach to the cam strap if you want to. On top of 2:3, 3:4 and 16:9 the lx5 will also get 1:1 aspect ratio. The lx5 is coming soon. panasonic just finished designing packaging etc.”

The current price of the LX3 is $400 (on Amazon)

If you know more about the LX5 and/or other cameras feel free to send me an email at 43rumors@gmail.com. I keep you anonymous. You can use the form on the right sidebar without sending me email adress or name. If you want you can create a new email account using fake names. That will make it easy for me to answer you!

Thanks!
Ale

Also, thought the name will be LX4. I guess GF1 is really the official LX4 model haha.. Can't wait to see it launch est July.

Well, it is rumours but so far the news are almost right on. Even though not always the product item we thought it was (case in point, the "E-P3" actually came out as E-PL1)

Also if you really have read through the website, its focusing more on tech and reviews on micro 4/3 lens and bodies.

LX5 news !

http://43rumors.com/ft3-the-panasonic-lx5/

QUOTE
“The viewfinder is electronic and you can tilt it 90 degrees. it’s pretty small, so it doesn’t suddenly make the camera too bulky. It comes with its own small pouch you can attach to the cam strap if you want to. On top of 2:3, 3:4 and 16:9 the lx5 will also get 1:1 aspect ratio. The lx5 is coming soon. panasonic just finished designing packaging etc.”

O wait, wrong thread laugh.gif

shimiad: it's not consider as "NEWS", and it's just a FT3 rumor, which is still quite low from "really confirm" biggrin.gif

flash photography was definitely allowed tongue.gif as it was more of a historical site/tourist spot rather than a place where people go to pray tongue.gif
