I'm at SS22/14. Eh, how's the service ah? Boleh pakai? I suppose the IPTV is useless if you have Astro. Which package you're on? They said installation takes 5-8 hours...?! I don't fancy the idea of having TM personnel in my house for so long...
*
Oo you're on the mewah shop side, I'm on the sandy park side lol

Yeah, I'm on vip20.. took them 1-2hours to setup for me since the phone pole is just behind my room. Internet speed is much better than 4mbps streamyx, IPTV is crap.

@moon*

Yeah, I've written the guides to be simple to follow. If your friend can help you, you should ask him. I normally only visit if there's some massive new problem which no one has encountered before, lol

even if they do....u wont benefit from it..coz the total speed they subscribed is already way pass the 20Mb package...not to mention they have 3 lines..one is dedicated.
*
APIIT structure is more complicated than that. ._.

They tell students during orientation that they have >20mbps balanced over multiple lines but in reality we're only allowed to utilize 10mbps at most (probably even less nowadays).. then they have HTTP traffic shaping in place for certain MIME types. There's also the technical staff that are arrogant yet know nothing who work for them. Lol, did you know that 3 years ago in my foundation year, I broke into TECHDC04/05, ZION (old file server) because they enabled remote desktop on every single PC (including servers) and set every TA account to 'Domain Controller' privilege status in active directory? doh.gif They only found out and fixed it because I told them to do it.. can't even set the desktop resolution on those brand new lenovo PCs correctly so I can't expect them to be aware of these things.

These assholes also monitor + log heavy HTTP traffic. One time they captured the HTTP login for my private server and started downloading files from it. Up till today, you can take down their entire network with a single click if you wanted to because their three main d-link managed switches are open for access.

Least they could do for us students is get 2x Unifibiz 20mbps lines and let us utilize it for basic lab work .. but nah, they don't give a rats arse about us <_>

Sorry if you're a TA or something I just bloody hate everything about that uni wink.gif

LOL....wait for the flash to load only, i'm finished with my dinner XD, rizvanrp....if u are free can u ask whether seri petaling with UniFi is next year Q1? or later?
*
What do you mean can I ask :S Can't call TM and ask? I don't work for them or anything, lol

There's like so many people asking when their area will be covered by Unifi. I don't think this is the right place to ask that question, you should call TM's Unifi hotline and ask them + provide the area details.. only they know the rollout plan. If you ask that question here, you'll only get an answer if someone else in this thread has/wants Unifi in that area and has already called and clarified the matter with TM's Unifi staff.

That's the only question we cannot answer in this thread because TM isn't exactly forcing LYN users to dig holes at night and lay fiber optic cabling for them, lul sweat.gif

Hey guys, I'm kinda in need of donations to keep the unifi.athena.my website up and running. Just to pay for webhosting fees -- there's more info @ http://unifi.athena.my (click on Donations). Any amount would be cool and really appreciated biggrin.gif TQ

err u did not do google adsense for it? try advertising.....if i got money sure i donate RM10/year.....40people RM10/year can keep the site running lor XD

btw can u find something that direct connect to UniFi with custom router instead of needing to go through the D-Link?, because i don't want to waste the power of my RT-N16 =D

hmmm....if set DHCP manually in pc in order to access in the VDSL unit, is it possible?
*
I don't really want to place adsense on it.. hate ads, lol. If you're using VDSL Unifi, 76radius says its possible to direct connect without the dir-615. I'll need to confirm this with him .-.

From 22A here. Was offered the trial just before the launch. Have until end of this month to decide. Can't complain about the performance but latency not so good. On the plus side, lightning spikes through copper no longer an issue. This will probably be the decider for me as 2 weeks ago lightning fried my skype phone, burnt 1 NIC in my Shuttle (as good as gone cos can't add NIC though still keeping fingers crossed for USB Gb dongle from China), burnt 1 port and screwed up another on my router as well as my fax. Came through my Streamyx connection. Plus I heard from TM, trial users will be offered 20Mbit at 10Mbit price. Will find out in July. Wonder if there will be any catch. So if downloading then much faster but if latency is what you are looking for, then not so good. Don't forget savings from equipment replacement/repair smile.gif

Ever considered moving to a cheaper hosting company? RM390 sounds expensive. Is it becasue it's a Malaysian hoster?
*
Yeah I'm currently hosting with Exabytes. They charge about RM120/year for the .my domain and RM260ish/year for the actual hosting. I'm using their business package, they have a lower specced one but the bandwidth would get used up pretty fast. Comes up to about RM30 a month but its pretty worth it since I prefer the local connectivity. I'll still keep the site running myself because I have some other projects running on it but I'm sort of throwing away bandwidth for free at the moment. Probably will optimize the site when I have the time, switch over to static pages + offload the images onto a separate host. biggrin.gif

Hey, the D-Link DIR-615 router uses a customised firmware? I'm using a DIR-655, can I set that up and not use the DIR-615 at all? Otherwise my table's gonna be super-cluttered with all the equipment...
*
Yeah it's using custom firmware. No way you can use your DIR-655 alone unless it supports VLAN tagging or you set up dd-wrt on it. In any case you still need the DIR-615's custom firmware for IPTV access.

If TM allows you to use your own router w/o DIR-615 as a VLAN bridge in the future, why would your dual band router not be compatible anymore?

The problem right now is that they've made it so you need the DIR-615 to push your PPPoE traffic from the dual band router onto a special VLAN in order for it to connect. If they ever make it so that its not needed, you will just need to remove the DIR-615 and it will still work.

This is however.. unlikely to happen. They've already ordered the DIR-615 from D-Link and its required to access the IPTV network.

There's no commercial router intended for home users that I know of which can support all of this by itself. You'll have to buy a special router and configure it manually (see RouterBOARD RB750G) to have IPTV + internet access without the DIR-615 (being used at all).

Thanks for the info, so i guess i should just proceed to get my new router, really can't stand the DIR-615.
Can you please recommend me a good simultaneous dual band router that has a very good firewall / security ? I am doing a lot of work on sensitive info and need my network to be very secure from the internet and WiFi.
*
I can't really recommend a good dual band router since what I normally do is setup a wired router + firewall (pfsense running on an old laptop).. wire that into a switch and from the switch I wire it into a wireless access point (wifi g/n/whatever). This way, all my components are separated and I have much better security and control over my network.

You can look at : http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/component/o...art/Itemid,189/

.. if you're looking for some high performance all-in-one wifi routers.

I would rate Linksys the highest, then netgear/dlink.. and belkin would be the worst IMO. Never had any firmware issues with Linksys.

Right now I'm on pfSense and its pretty much impossible to overload it with this 20/20mbps connection. Running @ 10 days of uptime with no network downtime despite its 9000+ connection bittorrent load.

In terms of NAT routing performance, the DIR-615 does lock up occasionally. People complain about the wifi signal because its really weak. Someone even had their DIR-615 constantly dropping wifi connections and breaking his VPN links. Then the port forwarding doesn't seem to work properly for some users either. Then there's the SSH daemon which cannot be shut off from LAN access and a 15 session max limit on the HTTP server. Connecting to the web UI on the dir-615 15 times simultaneously will cause its http server to lock up temporarily. I mean.. if thats the state of the other features on the router I can't really be sure what to expect from the SPI firewall lol

Hahaha... Got your point. I guess i better go get a new router ASAP. Seriously no idea what to get.
Just done some read up on 5Ghz Band, seems not able to support longer range then a few meter.
Perhaps i should just get a decent replacement with strong firewall will do. My concern is only security.
Anything to recommend me on that ?

Thanks !
In terms of security, home routers normally only offer SPI firewalls. They normally come with some simple rules to detect port scanners, block ICMP packets along with various VPN protocols and prevent fake LAN IPs from sending data in through the WAN interface. This combined with NAT gives your home network a decent level of security. As long as you don't misconfigure your router or setup port forwarding to services on your internal network which are insecure.. you should be fine.

Corporations which are using Unifibiz with static IP addressing will normally go with a hardware firewall/router combination. They need features such as connection logging, intrusion detection, etc. Home users can afford to just disconnect + reconnect their PPPoE connection if anyone tries to target them.

Nowadays, you're more likely to get 'attacked' by downloading a program with a password stealer attached to it.. this is something a basic software firewall such as Comodo or ZoneAlarm can protect you from.

hmmm means FTTH is not possible, so should we wait till they release their configuration in order to use custom routers to connect?
*
Custom routers will work now if you have VDSL Unifi, a smart switch with vlan tagging or you use the DIR-615 as a smart switch by putting it into VLAN bridging mode. Fiberhome can't support custom routers.. I tried to get it to work but all it could do was untag traffic.. couldn't re-tag it.

Hmm so does this mean I can't use my Linux box router anymore?
*
Linux boxes will work as long as you have the 8021q module loaded + vconfig installed.

I'm not going to pretend that I'm a pro at this but I'm not sure if my Linux based router box is capable. I'm using Mikrotik's router protocols.

Also, this means I have to flash the DIR-615 router still?

What hardware and OS are you using exactly?

We should start up a channel that just shows pictures of lolcats 24/7. Call it LULZHD and broadcast in 1080p. It would be 20x better than their current channel and VOD selection.
