I used video call to talk to my GF. Then we broke up last year, then I never use video call again.

As you may have been aware, I was at the Nokia Connection 2010 event in Singapore early this week, courtesy of Nokia Malaysia.  Now, you may not be aware, since the US online press does not really cover Nokia because of its low market share in the US, that Nokia is stil, by far, the largest manufacturer of phones in the world, and that they command the biggest market share in the smartphone segment of the mobile phone market.

So, here are a couple of facts and figures from the event that may be of interest to you, and that you can rattle off in the pub next time someone tries to tellyou that the world nowadays is all about the iPhone and Android:

1. sold 432 million devices in 2009, more than top 3 competitors combined.

2. 12th consecutive year as the world’s top phone manufacturer.

3. 1.2 billion people in the world with a Nokia device – Nokia has largest customer base for any consumer durable in the world.
  
4. Ovi Mail, targeting first time email users, has 10 million subscriptions globally, adding a million subscribers each month.
  
5. Indonesia, Bangladesh, Thailand and Vietnam are top 10 markets for Ovi Mail worldwide.
  
6. Ovi Maps was made free for pedestrian and car navigation in January.  Since then, it has been downloaded 10 million times.  It is available in 70 countries and in more than 45 languages.
  
7. owners of Nokia handsets can also download mobile versions of LonelyPlanet and Michelin travel guides for free.
 
8. ITU (international telecommunications union) estimates that mobile subscriptions globally will reach 5 billion this year – more than two thirds of the population is covered by mobile telecoms services.
  
9. according to a study called “Smartphone 360″, 62% of smartphone owner’s time goes into activities called “connecting people” – accessing social network apps, voice calling and SMS.  12% goes to entertainment – games, music, video, pictures.  4% goes into life management – calendar, alarms, sports tracker.  9% is used up for browsing the web.  The study included 4,500 panellists who all own Symbian phones, with the Nokia 5800 being the most popular model.
 
10. Online Ovi Store opened a year ago.  Globally, it has 90 million users.  The store averages 1.7 million downloads every day.
 
11. Comes with Music, Nokia’s music offering, has more than 10 million tracks in its library.  It is available in Western Europe, China, India, Russia, Middle East.
 
12. Nokia Life Tools, aimed at developing countries by providing agricultural information, educational services and entertainment has attracted more than 1.5 million paying subscribers in India and Indonesia, in less than one year.
 
13. Nokia has now segmented its offerings into just 3 key areas – Series 40 phones, Symbian smartphones, and Meego mobile computers.
 
14. According to Gartner, Nokia 44.3% of the market in the first quarter of 2010, and is poised to retain this leadership position.
 
15. Ìndonesia will be the first country in the world to get the new Nokia X5.
 
16. As part of the new Nokia N8’s launch, customers in Malaysia and Singapore will be amongst the first to enjoy a service called webTV (which you can find described rather prominently in the N8’s specifications on the Nokia website).  webTV is an internet streaming TV service, and will be launched in partnership with 8TV, TV3 and Virtual Malaysia in Malaysia, and Channel News Asia and Makansutra (a food channel) in Singapore.  Nokia is currently working with the celcos in each country to work out the data implications of webTV and hopes to announce some good deals for subscribers soon.  Watch out for another post where I shot a short video of the Makansutra channel in action on the N8, connected via the HDMI port to a high definition LCD TV.
 
17. On the new Nokia N8, the owner can record his/her own voice to be used as the navigation voice, using a feature called “own voice” – this is available only in English, though.
