QUOTE(tadasu @ May 22 2010, 07:30 PM)
hi guys,

Im currently a DSLR user (40D), been looking at M43 to replace my 40D especially GF-1 because of their much smaller size and portability. Any ex-DSLR users here who regret switching?
*
I'm ex-user of 40d. No need to switch. 40D for serious photography. GF-1 for casual shooting.

Another proof that dSLR user more inclined towards GF-1....

Well, I suppose if tadasu is really after the portability - he can still consider Micro Four Thirds camera. It's not exactly pocketable, but at least it's much lighter and the lenses are also smaller, you are more likely to carry around with you compare to the bulkier DSLR. More importantly, it doesn't shout "Hey look I am a nerd and I got a DSLR with me" - so it's more suitable for casual photography and parties

Quality wise. D40 was entry level DSLR, so image quality wise they aren't that much different. If you talk about cameras for more serious photography like D300S of course there's no match. Sorry misread 40D with D40  blush.gif

And gogo2 - I'm from Sony DSC-T20 tongue.gif
*
lol, d40 and 40d is big different tongue.gif tongue.gif

not sure why, but majority dSLR user opt for Pana... blush.gif

What are the difference between 14-42mm and 9-18mm lens?
Is it suitable to use a pancake 20mm f1.7 lens to shoot for landscape or protrait?
*
9-18mm is wider.... when u go to a party, you can shoot nearer and more people in ur photo...

suitability is different from different person... but as a normal standard:

landscape = wide angle = 7~14mm
portrait = big aperture f/1.7~1.4 (sometimes its preferable to be zoom of 25mm and above (for m43 camera 2x crop))

Definitely 17mm f2.8 is not good for low light shooting unless you got good sensors like the Canon G11. Or alternatively dial the ISO to as high as its available, normally sacrificing picture quality. Or your subject stays stationary, not moving. If you want to shoot in low light, you gotta get a 'fast' lens, look for those lens with lower 'f numbers' like f1.4, f1.1 or even f0.95 now! Beware though, the lower the f numbers, the more expensive they become. That's why for fresh starters/beginners, we always go with experimenting with Manual Focus lenses, cheap and abundantly available. You need adapters though (normally).

[words in red above is nonsense... dun read it everyone!!!]

lol... you're not making sense bro... Canon G11 sensor is the worst sensor among dSLR... because this is PnS sensor...

stop drinking too much beer and inhaling too much drugs... its not good for your body!!!

Fully agree that m4/3 sensor is bigger, no argument there.  but comparing canon g11 and my ep2 mounted with pany 20mmf1.7, as a practical user as i used to own canon g11, i think i am well qualified to say that canon g11 although at f2.8 only, it can handle low light very very well! this is becoz its sensor is improved and its sensor can take in more light than before. i have tried it n i know. however, due to it being a PnS, i opted to go for m4/3 to be able to change lens and use it like a compact n at the sametime behave like an dslr. How i wish ep2 sensor has the same ability.

Its true, i dont mean to belittle out dear oly ep2 as i am an ep2 owner too! trust me, go n try out n you will know what i mean. sorry if i stirred up anything, not my intention all the sifus n taikos here. cool bro.  rclxub.gif  cry.gif
*
we're cool... but the problem is, you don't know what you're talking about here...

How you evaluate whether Canon G11 taking in more lights than Olympus E-P2? How??? Did you check whether you
have the same setting between G11 and E-P2?

QUOTE(bobds78 @ May 24 2010, 05:40 PM)
Ok, i am not a scientific guy, just a normal practical user experience here. I remember using canon g11 taking pictures inside my living room under normal fluorescent lighting and i don't have to use any flash at all and all pictures come out clear and bright, under auto. With ep2, if i set it to auto, there will be some artifacts/noise. I always prefer to use S priority and dial ISO higher to 400 to make sure a clear and bright enough picture. Its my personal experience.

I went for the pany 20mm f1.7 instead of the oly 17mm f2.8 because most online reviews trumped oly 17mm. Look for them then you will see why almost all go for pany 20mm though it costs a lot more!
I am here to share information and make friends along the way. My information may be wrong, correct me if you will. I am cool. There's no need for 'beer' attack or  'drug' abuse, and certainly abusive language not welcome.
*
ok la... sorry about the beer and drug abuse thingy... lolz...

anyway, I believe there's an explanation about what you see.... probably the auto of G11 is better than E-P2?
Or in G11, the picture is bright and clear but due to overprocessing, a lot of detail gone?

Do you still have G11? If have, then good la... you can do some experiment and let us see...

The reason why we are shocked with your finding is because you're comparing dSLR quality camera like E-P2
and PnS like G11 and you find that in low light, the G11 is better... omg... that is almost like blasphemous...lolz

its just that we find it weird that G11 is better than E-P2... as usual, we, as self proclaimed photographer,
will always think that what we bought is the best.. lolz...

Cool Bro. Oh ya, it may sound like comparing ep2 with G11! Definitely ep2 is way way above g11, no doubt! And that's why I go for ep2 and trash G11! But the truth is, I have read some review that I dont remember where that it mentioned G11's light sensing ability has been pumped up and this is proven through my use of G11 for about 3 months. During that time, I was really amazed at G11's ability to handle low light, given its small size sensor. Imagine if they transfer this technology to its bigger brother, those big guns EOS series!  yawn.gif

Unfortunately I have sold off my G11 to upgrade to ep1 and now to ep2. May be I can still scavenge for some G11 photos and post them here later tonite.

cheers
*
yaya, I'm very cool one... as sniper said, that's my style of posting...lolz...

I think you mean, G11 will over expose picture is it?

After my last trip, I realised the importance of having quick access to the controls.
Gatal-ness... I love my S90 but it lacks the detail and depth of field of bigger sensor.

get 550D. I saw the picture at 6400 ISO and it's the awesomeness...

Ja.. I saw the poison as well.. Just that a "proper" dslr doesn't fit into my travel bag.

samurai1337: Can you survive with just the pancake all day?
*
u should ask me...

My answer is, yes, I survive all day with 17mm f/2.8!!! During that travel, I feel my 14-42mm is useless...
maybe I'm not particular in photography... as long as it takes good photo, i will zoom with foot.. tongue.gif

one thing i like about this lens is it is very small... and the focal length goes into 18mm which is useful
in daily shooting.. enough to substitute the kit lens...

So I want to sell my kitlens... anyone interested? cheap cheap..

Very expensive, market price is around 3.3k for EP2, currently deciding whether to get EP1 or GF1  shakehead.gif . I am seriously in love with the olympus styling but why their pancake lens have to suck compared to GF1 20mm F1.7
*
u don't have to buy Olympus pancake. U can always buy Panasonic pancake. tongue.gif Olympus pancake sucks but its half the price... so what you
pay is what u get tongue.gif
