QUOTE(ryuuzaki @ May 18 2010, 05:47 PM) use a partition manager like EASEUS Partition Master. copy the entire partition of your HDD to your new SSD. That's an option to go for but I can't guarantee OKR will work after you copy the recovery partition to SSD. Btw you can't clone a HDD if your target HDD/SSD has less capacity afaik.

That'll become a rather complicated task, not recommend since it's not a sure win situation too. So the best thing for you to do would be: -Burn the recovery DVD -Copy the partition with ryuuzaki's recommend software to SSD -Install OS like usual on SSD w/o touching recovery partition -Pray your OKR works after that

QUOTE The touch recovery system should work like this: press recovery button ----> 3 options available, System Backup, System Recovery and Creative Recovery Disc ----> select system recovery -----> reboot system into recovery mode which is inside the OEM recovery partition, if you've re-format/Clean/Delete your HDD, then you'll get an error during rebooting system since recovery partition is gone. I've answered it long time ago so you can refer it.

@gstoh How long since you entered the extended warranty key? 2 weeks? 4 weeks? @whispars I would advise you to read thru this thread. It's a bit long but you'll find a lot of infos on how to maintain your laptop's temp and tweaks/tips on this laptop too . By removing the bloatware it'll reduce a few processes on the background, hence less work/load on system so it'll create less heat. I just don't know how the idle temperature would be compare to my entirely re-format OS Y460. So if you would do an experiment about it, that'll be great!

@whispars
Just normal format, no other tricks. As undervolting would be an option, change your CPU management thru Lenovo energy management is an easy yet effective solution.
@ryuuzaki
It might seem right on what you've written, but copy/re-assign a partition with system/OS and MBR doesn't usually work especially on 64bit and win 7. If you said about the recovery partition and drive with data, then I'm ok.

The recovery disc is essentially for you to re-install/format your system in case you have a bad HDD so you replace a new one; recovery partition corrupt; you don't know how to use OKR or OKR can't find your recovery partition. My OKR still able to locate my recovery partition so it's good but I've cloned it in case things happen.

Nope on D:\ and recovery partition, and you can forget about recovery partition since you've burned it on DVDs.

Thanks unknownhammie for informing us about the new BIOS ver . Did flash mine last night too and I'm surprised to find that the ATI GC kept maintaining @ 300/300(rather than 450/800) even my powerplay setting was the usual maximum performance. Idle temp on ATI GC is 52-53C while CPU is 49-50C, no changes when using Intel GMA. I'm not sure the old BIOS have this but there's an option there for you to choose between switchable graphics or discrete graphics at all time. Aside from that, I'm keen to see Lenovo update the ATI GC's software, if possible, please include overdrive!!

I've played game for >2 hours after I flashed. 300/300 because you want to lower your GPU load hence less heat. It'll switch to 450/800 if you're accessing browser and video/movies iirc then when you stop, it just falls back to 300/300. The game part is a bit skeptical as I only did once, the game lag or rather stop during gaming in 1st few minutes, then amazingly it went really smooth after that. Max temp recorded 73C, Ave 68.5C on GPU-Z.

If you guys are not confident to do the BIOS flash, go to Lenovo SC and let the technician do it as it'll be safe + it won't void your warranty. @Mie131085 If it happens all the time when you wanna play a game, I can say it won't be a good experience. I rather use back the old version instead if can .

That's considered unlucky and flashing BIOS does have risk involved. It would be better you send your laptop to their SC at Subang when you're free just to flash the BIOS.

Played my games for >1 hour just now. Max 70C and Ave 66.9C on GPU-Z. Do note that these few nights are quite cold. The lag thing didn't happen this time so I assume it's fine now . @samlee860407 Works fine on mine but using USB only. @fishysjj No. @synz Thought you live near Subang since you said you went there to do warranty hehe.

Current Y460 doesn't have rapid drive technology(no ones knows when it'll come out). The HDD+SSD combo is just a "maybe" answer of what's Lenovo rapid drive is as we don't how the technology works. There is an extra PCI-e slot which you can add a mini SSD but no one tested whether it works or not, plus I don't know there are any mini SSDs selling in M'sia.

I'm skeptical on your post. If possible, do show us proof like pics so we can look at it. If it's true, then you're the only one who has it.

@unknownhammie
No offense on you but I've searched through China, US, and Europe forums on people who bought their unit recently, STILL no sign of the new rapid drive technology. Potential buyers of these forums also keep calling Lenovo for the whereabouts these few months on when it'll come out. Of course it'll be out, but when?? And it's only applies on certain Y460/Y560 models and the price won't be 3599/3299 since there's an additional SSD inside.

QUOTE(synz @ May 21 2010, 04:54 PM) wtf is that fair? or lenovo encouraging customer to buy later btw do we need to run the rapid storage technology at startup? I can safely say the rapid drive version won't arrive in M'sia mainly because of price range. Lenovo did say Y460 does have rapid drive technology, but only a certain models which we won't know unless it's out which is why I'm skeptical on the bro's comment in the 1st place.

Hmmm... Interesting question for you guys. Because we are using switchable graphics and if you download the latest driver from ATI, it won't run. What if we switch to discrete graphics only on BIOS? If you guys are using your lovely Y460, do try now and let me know if it allows to run/download the latest driver

QUOTE(gstoh @ May 22 2010, 10:57 AM) just buy a PCI-E ssd to plug it in and it works! O_O, of course you need a compatible driver to make it work The tricky part is even it's working, does it work like what rapid drive does or just a normal HDD+SSD combo? Too bad not many resellers selling PCI-e mini SSD...if not, I might give it a try

Interesting... Seems like there are a few lucky owners on China. The TSI technology which they confirm is the rapid drive technology really amaze me as you can see the EE sticker doesn't have the rapid drive word rather than the TSI sticker. Anyhow, now we all know how rapid drive works(just mSATA SSD+HDD), maybe we can try to look for parts!! This post has been edited by jotaro12: May 22 2010, 01:32 PM
