Apple has just announced the new iPhone on WWDC 2010 (around 1 AM June 8th Malaysian time). And boy does it look gorgeous!
Available in 16GB or 32GB, black or white.
The new features:
FaceTime - basically videocall, but between iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 only for now. Also for now, only by using WiFi. The reason is because AT&T will struggle to support the bandwidth, but we'll see if Apple and Maxis can arrange it for us here
Also, this is an open standard, so we can expect phones from other manufacturer to support FaceTime as well. Both front and back cameras can be used.
5 MP camera, LED flash, Backside Illumination Sensor, Front Camera - you should probably know more megapixels equals more noise, but the camera sensor in iPhone 4 has also been increased as well, and paired with backside illumination technology. BIS and LED flash should result in better low-light photos. Front camera can also be used for easier camwhoring!
HD Video & iMovie for iPhone - self-explanatory
Retina Display with IPS technology - our beloved 3.5" Multitouch display now has a resolution of 960x640 (4x iPhone 3GS), so that's a stunning 326 pixels per inch! 800:1 contrast ratio and oleophobic coating for both the aluminosilicate glass screen and back panel. Also, IPS technology gives better colours and viewing angles…should beat AMOLED anytime.
Gyroscope - iPhone reinvented mobile gaming with the accelerometer. This is the next invention.
Bigger battery - Hey, it's Apple.

Some countries only sell locked versions. For example, AT&T is selling the 16GB for $599 (~RM2300) without commitment, but this doesn't mean it's unlocked. (thx to tinkerbel)

Unlocking your iPhone
From 10 November, the iPhone can be unlocked for O2 customers in the UK.
Pay Monthly customers
Your iPhone can be unlocked at anytime free of charge. If you unlock your handset and place a non-O2 sim into it, you will still have to honour the remainder of the minimum term on your contract.
iPhone Pay & Go customers
Yes, you can unlock your iPhone for a one-off cost of £15. You'll pay for this from the money topped-up on your phone.
But if you unlock your iPhone less than 12 months after you bought it, we'll take off the free Web & Wi-Fi Bolt On (that we added for the first 12 months). You can buy a Web & Wi-Fi Bolt On for £10 a month when you fill in the unlocking form. Find out more about the Web & Wi-Fi Bolt On here.
What do I need to do?
Firstly, complete the unlocking form - it will take up to 14 days for the iPhone to be unlocked and we'll text you to confirm the unlock request. Then place a non-O2 sim into the iPhone and connect to iTunes via a USB cable. iTunes will confirm that the iPhone has been successfully unlocked.
The needs to have been purchased from O2 and at the time of receiving your request to unlock, you need to have an O2 sim in the phone with £15 GBP credit and the iphone needs to have been used within the UK to make calls.

the unlock will definitely come sooner or later. it's just matter of when. but being frank, after 2 years being with a locked UK O2 set and the trouble to wait for unlock every single FW update, it's not worth the fuss unless the price difference is really significant. plus, u will have to take into consideration on the warranty side. iPhone parts aren't cheap & unless you can find a way to send it back to UK when issue arises, you'll paying a hefty sum of money for parts replacement.

For AT&T, the prices for iPhone 4 is the same as iPhone 3GS when it was released. So you can expect the next line-up RRP to be as below:
- iPhone 4 32GB, RM2990
- iPhone 4 16GB, RM2490
- iPhone 3GS 8GB, RM1990
Similarly, the rate plans are likely to be the same. Here's the current rate plans for iPhones from
Maxis and
Digi to get a rough idea. Again, I'm not saying these are the definitive prices, but it shouldn't be far off.
Yes, it's $199 and $299 in US. With a 2-year contract with AT&T. So you can't compare with that.
4. But wait, iPhone 4 uses microSIM?! How long do we have to wait to have this in Malaysia? Any news from Maxis, Digi or Celcom?

Maxis already have microSIM, for both voice and data. You can bring your current SIM and exchange for a micro SIM for RM25.
Digi will surely have microSIMs available if they will bring iPhone 4. No word on Celcom, but rest assured. Our local telcos aren't stupid enough to bring in a phone that can't be used on their network.
Else, you can always cut a normal SIM to the size of a microSIM, since the chip is exactly the same. At your own risk, of course.

This iPhone is sometimes called as "iPhone 4G" as in 4th-generation. iPhone 4 does not support 4G cellular network.

So far there have never been a price drop for iPhones until a new model is launched. Look for special plan offers from carriers, instead of a price cut of the iPhone itself.

That's the price you have to pay to be an early adopter. That person has to account for a lot more charges like shipping, taxes, etc. You either pay the price, or just wait for it to launch locally. Please do not flame those sellers, they are trying their best to bring in the latest gadgets.
10. The iPhone 4 is a disappointment. When will a new iPhone be released?

Apple typically announced new iPhones in June every year. If you bought an iPhone 4 a few months before iPhone 5 (or whatever it shall be named), please don't go complaining about Apple making your iPhone 4 "obsolete". Most people could not afford having the latest and greatest all the time.
For example, the Motorla Droid/Milestone was the king of Android smartphones, only to be surpassed by the Nexus One and HTC Desire after a few months. After a few more months, both are old news compared to HTC Evo 4G. At least you'll know that your iPhone 4 is unlikely to be 'outdated' until June 2011.
11. I heard there's a rumour about a new version of the iPod touch. Is this true?

This is very likely if not confirmed. Ever since the first iPhone was launched on June 2007, a new iPod touch will be announced around September during a music-related Apple event. This goes on every year, so you can expect a new 4th gen iPod touch, probably similarly designed as iPhone 4, to be announced around September 2010.
So if iPhone 5 will be launching on June 2011, you can expect a 5th gen iPod touch on September 2011.
12. I just bought an iPhone 3GS. Is it worth it to upgrade? Can trade-in?

Obviously this depends on the individual. About trade-ins, no word on that yet (AT&T has an upgrade plan for 3GS users). However, iPhone 3GS will be much better with iOS 4.
That being said, the 3GS is still one of the better phones in the market right now. Nothing wrong buying a new one since it's cheaper now. But keep in mind that one day the 3GS won't be enjoying every new feature of future iOS updates. If we follow the current pattern, the 3GS won't fully support iOS 5 and would not be eligible for iOS 6.
13. Can I edit my own ringtones in iPhone? Even my old phone can do that!

No you can't, but it's obviously not a hardware or software limitation. iPhone can even trim movies. The reason for no ringtone editing is because there's a market out there for ringtones, and apparently it's a big business that Apple may have no intentions on ruining it.
However you can trim any songs you like on your computer and transfer it to your iPhone. Even iTunes can do it.
14. Why no AMOLED screen?

The known weakness of AMOLED screens is that it's not really good under sunlight. Apple claims IPS technology is better than AMOLED, although this is debatable especially when compared to Samsung's new Super AMOLED screens.
15. What is Retina Display?

It is just Apple's fancy name for a high-resolution screen. The 960x640 resolution certainly isn't HD (which is at least 720i), but it's higher than any phones in the market right now. It has a pixel density of 326 pixels per inch, which Apple claims is higher than the limit of what the human eye is able to perceive at a distance of 1 feet.
Wired magazine said that the technical 'human eye limit' would be closer to 477ppi, and that the name 'Retina' display is misleading.

iPhone 3GS will have all the new features of iOS 4. iPhone 3G will miss out on a few new features, one of them is multitasking. iPhone 2G (the original iPhone) won't be getting the update at all (don't fret! You're one of the first iPhone users!)
Similarly for iPod touch, the 3rd gen (32GB and 64GB only) will get all iOS 4 features (excluding those iPhone-only functions of course, like calls, SMS, cameras, etc). 2nd gen iPod touch (including the current 8GB model) won't be getting all new features like multitasking, similar to iPhone 3G. iOS 4.0 is not available for the 1st gen flat-backed iPod touch.

The Golden Master version was successfully jailbroken on an iPhone 3GS. Although the method is quite complex, expect a simplified iOS 4 (final version) jailbreak (also for iPhone 4) sometime after June 24th.
