Probably Astro can make free upgrade for those who are using astro max before they upgrade their decoder to byond. Like me... tongue.gif Although I think, that's really UNLIKELY...

If you want B.yond Max (or as Cam called it, PVR), you probably have to buy it. You don't buy B.yond. You must subscribe to it for 12 months minimum or 24 months for new Astro subscribers. When B.yond Max comes out, you can buy it and upgrade. World Cup is coming and Astro is already busy. If you don't want to miss out on football in HD, subscribe now.

yes, astro now are really busy and they even make special IVR menu for those who wants to subscribe Sports package.... smile.gif

Anybody with the Sports package noticed that ESPN HD is now filled with programming? Not LIVE necessarily, but filled with programming. I guess Astro realizes that a mostly static channel will raise the ire of new B.yond subscribers who paid money to watch the World Cup in HD with the Sports package.
fuad
*
Yes, I also realized that. Before this, they always show the static image (it's dangerous for Plasma user, it can cause Burn-in to their panel tongue.gif )

Probably this is the new Astro PVR feature...

Taken from THE STAR ONLINE, article date : 21 November 2009

Original article link : http://biz.thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?f...mp;sec=business

" The PVR, coupled with an improved electronic programme guide, will help to ensure there’s always something for subscribers to watch.

The PVR has a pause, stop, rewind and forward functionality, and subscribers can programme ahead what TV show to record. Rohana says the PVR has a hard disk storage of 160 hours.

On the differences between the latest PVR system and its predecessor, the discontinued Astro Max, she says: “This will be the first deployment of a new kind of PVR with many of the world’s largest broadcasters to follow Astro throughout 2010. In order to bring this next-generation PVR, Astro has fully licensed all the best-in-class technologies to deliver the world’s best PVR experience. This is a key difference to the Astro Max.”

Rohana says Astro is also working with all its channel providers and “fundamentally shifting its infrastructure to ensure that the PVR accurately records the programmes you want and provides detailed information around them.”

Another difference from the Astro Max system is the push functionality, which can be used as an up-selling tool for Astro.

“If I know you like CSI, I can download on a push basis the whole Season 200 of CSI and put it on your box. When you come home, I can say: ‘Hey, guess what? I have the whole Season 200 of CSI. Do you want to buy it?’ So, either you decide what you want to record, or we intuitively try to cater to what you want,” she says.

Astro is planning a major drive to change its relationship with customers from a transactional relationship to “a real relationship,” she says.

“We will understand what you like. If you like Oasis (an Astro channel with programming catering to Islamic values) and you plan to perform the haj, we’ll download a whole series on ibadah haji onto your box. And there’ll be a message that says we’ve downloaded this series of 12 episodes and asks you whether you want it.”

The HD set-top boxes, to be introduced by year-end, will only be for HD, but an external hard disc for PVR can be added. Next year it will introduce HD/PVR set-top boxes.

I didnt understand this paragraph  rclxub.gif

So, what they told is this year we have to get the HDD addon if we want to use PVR function and next year they will introduce new b.yond HD decoder that build in HDD...
we'll see bout that  hmm.gif
*
From that paragraph, it explains that Astro actually wanna to introduce 2 versions of HD decoder.

First version is our "proud" Byond.., it actually the standard version decoder that can receive HD as well as SD Channels. It can also be functioned as PVR with the firmware update and adding the external HDD (it was not confirm yet whether we can use any external HDD or astro supplied HDD, but from the trusted sources, it can only support WD AV HDD) . But the functions are limited. The great example is Byond can record the TV shows. But only what are you watching on that time. You can't record the one channel while watching other channel. And you actually stuck at that channels. It is because, Normal Byond only have one Tuner.

Second version, yes, this is the "real" PVR. Don't know what Astro want to name it. But many forumers here always said it as Byond Max tongue.gif It was schedule to launch sometimes in June. Probably before the WC kick-off . It will functions really like PVR and has internal HD inside it. It has 2 tuners, whether you can record one channel while watching other channel. One forumer here (if i'm not mistaken, Writesimply@Fuad) said that we can actually record 2 channels at one time. This new PVR can receive HD as well SD. Upgraded version from earlier Astro Max.

All this actually are not confirm yet, no official announcement from Astro until now. But I have read one article from the Star online, that Astro will launch the new PVR on 1st June 2010. I think, someone has posted the article here, maybe you can browse the previous pages.

QUOTE(TallJustin @ May 30 2010, 04:25 PM)

2) is the a new decoder with in built PVR. it's got 2 tuners so allows recording of 2 simulateous shows and if I've got this rigth playback of a 3rd all at the same time. Personally I've not tested this box.
It will require a special dual LNB that naturally have 2 cables coming to the box to feed the two tuners.

The PVR features aren't just about recording I find that the pause live broadcast feature is awesome. My phone rings, my baby craps her nappy or what ever I just hit pause and deal with it and then come back and hit play to take off from where I left.

Another little secret I discovered is that not only can you pause but rewind to watch that goal again and lets say you've been watching a programme from the start and you really get it into it and want to watch it again then just hit record. If you haven't changed channel during the broadcast of the show the HDD will automatically go back and keep the recording of the entire show for you.

The major thing you will find is that you watch TV differently. No longer do you just turn the box on and watch, now you turn the box on and sellect what you want to watch from the recording you have made. Kind of TiVo like.

To make this recording function better then the old astro max we are spending a lot of time improving the quality of the EPG. shortly you'll notice the start times of programmes will be far more accurate. As you know Malaysian law requires that we censor programmes & remove foregin commercials before they are broadcast and we do this in almost all our international channels live with a special delay system that holds the incoming video until it is edited and then it gets published. Problem with a PVR and this delay system is that you often would miss the end part of a show as it ran over the EPG scheduled time. We will be tweaking our EPG to compensate for this.

This is going to be a busy week for Astro and I hpoe you like what is coming.

Sorry I've been MIA on here, working on the data behind the EPG and my new baby girl click HERE (isn't she cute!) has meant that I've been too busy to drop by. Got any questions drop then on my blog. I reply to everyone and I do not censor your comments.

Cheers all
Justin

Yeah! our sifu already came and give very good description about the new astro PVR.. Congratulations for your new born baby girl.... biggrin.gif She's so cute...
Actually, I'm more interested for the new PVR box than connecting external HDD to my present Byond tongue.gif
May I know, is that possible for me who already owned Byond to change to new Astro PVR? hmm.gif
And I need to change the new dish + lnb also?

I didn't surrender it because it cost more than "RM80". Hope this decision are right.

By the way, will Astro remove your Astro Max for waiver of the Installation Fees?

Astro B.Yond FAQ:
How do I sign up for Astro B.yond Box?

Please note that Astro Max will not be swapped out.

*
Yes, I surrender my Max for installation fee waiver.
Because I think, Max will be useless if I keep it.., so I gave up it.
The installer who came to my house to install Byond last December feel really shocked that I'm willing to change my decoder to Byond that did not have any PVR function like Max. ohmy.gif
eh, but I can swapped my Max....

Good to hear. I'll be visiting and asking tons of questions. Hopefully the sales people would know all the details.

This doesn't sound too good. Hopefully tomorrow I can clarify; but then again generally sales people are notoriously forgetful or misinformed.

Hopefully Astro keeps track of their Astro Max subscribers so that they can get B.yond PVR for free, especially for those who had to "surrender" their Astro Max when they installed their B.yond.

If Astro transmits HD at 8Mbps H264 and using 384kpbs Dolby Digital, using a 16GB flash drive you can record 252 minutes of HD, equal to The Lord Of The Rings Extended Edition.
