Trying it now.

Update: It doesn't seem as flexible because on the fly kill doesn't really work, if it were to incorporate some functions of ATK into this, I think it would be great. But as yet, ATK seems to give more flexibility in terms of what apps are killed and what can be manually killed.

1699 is with a specific contract, and it is upfront payment. But i think installment is possible? Best to contact maxis or view their website for more info.

what do u mean by reconnecting my internet connection? is it switching the router off?
*
Well, yeah, switching it off will give you a new IP address.
Or just unplug your phone line and plug in will do as well.

On a side note: for people wanting to get battery % indicator on the top bar, you can download battery indicator by darshan from the market. I find this is accurate and it also gives temperature as well for the battery.

can anyone list down best apps. that must have in galaxy s? and anyone knw how to make galaxy s perform faster? icon_question.gif

thanks thumbup.gif

There is no must have apps actually. But what would really suit your specific needs.

What I do recommend is ATK if you can do the right settings.
Handcent SMS , instead of using the stock android SMS system -> You can use ringdroid to 'remind' you that you have unread SMS, which is great.
Ringdroid for people who want custom ringtones/SMS notifications edited from their songs
Some widgets for quick toggle settings from curvefish that I posted earlier
A digital clock and calendar widget
Agenda widget that links your schedule to whichever homescreen you want

And I prefer FXcamera over the stock camera app, and it's fun too.

Android system info for people who want to know what their phone is up to.

Yes you can, when you use it to edit your mp3 to the section you want.

e.g length of ringing and the section of the song, you can save it either as 'ringtone' or 'notification'

Notification can only be used for notification sound, same goes for ringtone.

Try it and if you have problems post here.

For notification sound, i recommend to set it to around 2 seconds or maybe even less.
Then use handcent to set reminder.

Because before I set it to around 15 seconds, even when I am replying the sms the notification is still ringing.
So if you're afraid to miss SMS notice, set the reminder function in handcent.

It is default firmware -> old
You are facing android bug #2207 I think, which is what happened to me.

I solved this by first switching off data
enter flight mode
switch on data
go back online

Then i can see GPRS/3G connection once data starts to transfer.

Accessories wise, I don't see what you need more than a screen protector, case and possibly car charger/car dock, but those you don't need 'official' or carrier stocked accessories.

But what do you have in mind over accessories?
The car charger and car dock can be bought from some guys on the forum for around RM40 delivered for both items.

Hi all,

I'm planning to get my 1st Android phone but I'm not sure which to get, the HTC Desire or the Samsung Galaxy S. I've heard many different things about both phones. Just want to get some advise.

Thanks.

Try both and pick the one you like, do note of the existing limitations of both and possible issues.
There are videos on youtube that depict examples from both handsets.

But regardless of what you go for, as long as it's an android we're all using the same system. smile.gif

And no regrets on the galaxy S. It exceeded all my expectations.

Using ATK you can free up more by pulling your security setting to low, you will see a lot of extra stuff on the screen.

I moved all the things that I usually want running to the ignore list and also the services as well.

Then used auto kill set to every 30min. Try it and let us know what you think.

to disable stock messaging system:
1) Go to default messaging
2) press left button
3) Select settings
4) Scroll to the bottom until you see notification, untick that

You mean the contact list inside handcent itself?
I don't think you can select that, you can only change the display contacts based on the 'Contact' icon.
From there, right click, display list, select the list you want.

For quick sending of SMS, go to contact list, search for contact, then swipe left, it will open up message app.

Mine shows phone contacts, you might want to try setting your contact list display list and then kill handcent and restart it to see if it appears.

weird... how come mine show sim card contacts? dont know how to solve... experimenting!!

Have you done the settings I explained in the contact list itself?
From there you can toggle.

I moved mine to not show gmail contacts and it didn't. Meanwhile all phone and sim contacts are listed in handcent.

It's good if you need to know a place and how to get there, not so much a driving aid.

No garmin for android yet.

Battery life for me is great. I only charge once in 2 days at most.
Now 24h unplugged and only down 20+%.

Well, for one I set my screen to dimmest, because it's the device that eats up the most battery.

Next what I did was i used the lockpattern widget so I don't have to keep punching in the pattern when I am at home, only when I am out.

Next I put the screen timeout to 30 seconds, which is a good inbetween for me. 15 seconds is too quick for my liking.

I am only on 2G network because frankly speaking, maxis in my area has terrible 3G connection, and having it cycle between 2G and 3G will only eat my battery.

Although some have advised not to use task killers, I still used them.
I set it to security level low
Moved all the core apps and background running services to ignore list
Moved all my frequently used apps to ignore list

Then set it to auto kill every 30 minutes

The screen is the thing that burns the most battery from my experience. And I have the habit of manually turning the screen off before waiting for timeout.

This works for me, and may not be applicable to everyone but currently it's down 24%. Unplugged 25h.

I also turn off my data connection because some apps turn it on and send data automatically.

In addition, I use wifi sporadically when I need to download stuff from the market or check out some stuff.

And I only turn bluetooth on if I need to use my handsfree. Nothing out of the ordinary in terms of usage, but old habits die hard and my old HP phone was a battery drainer so it conditioned me to 'save juice' by using similar steps.

And I forgot to mention, the first 2 times I charged my phone when i got it, it didn't last this long.

I've had this phone for more than 3 weeks and I've charged it less than 10 times. Average is 3 days per charge now.

Does it happen all the time? or is this the only time?
Have you restarted the phone and turned on wifi to see if this happens again?
