The Emotional Highbury and The Grand Ashburton Grove

Highbury 1913-2006

For the majority of their time in south-east London, Arsenal played at the Manor Ground in Plumstead, a three-year period at the nearby Invicta Ground between 1890 and 1893 excepted. The Manor Ground was initially just a field, but the club installed stands and terracing in time for their first Football League match in September 1893. They played their home games there for the next twenty years (with two exceptions in 189495), until the move to north London in 1913.

Arsenal Stadium, widely referred to as Highbury, was Arsenal's home from September 1913 until May 2006. The original stadium was designed by the renowned football architect Archibald Leitch, and had a design common to many football grounds in the UK at the time, with a single covered stand and three open-air banks of terracing. In the 1930s, the entire stadium was given a massive overhaul, with new Art Deco West and East stands constructed, opening in 1932 and 1936 respectively; in addition, the North Bank terrace had a roof added, which was later bombed during World War II and not restored until 1956.

At its peak, Highbury could hold over 60,000 spectators, and had a capacity of 57,000 until the early 1990s. The Taylor Report and Premier League regulations forced Arsenal to convert Highbury into an all-seater in time for the 199394 season, reducing the capacity to 38,419 seated spectators. This capacity had to be reduced further during Champions League matches to accommodate additional advertising hoardings, so much so that for two seasons (199899 and 199900) Arsenal played Champions League home matches at Wembley, which could house more than 70,000 spectators.

Final moments - the emotions run high in Highbury

Ashburton Grove 2007-present

Expansion of Highbury was restricted because the East Stand had been designated as a Grade II listed building and the other three stands were close to residential properties. These limitations have prevented the club from maximising the revenue that their domestic form could have brought in recent seasons. After considering various options, in 2000 Arsenal proposed building a new 60,000-seater stadium at Ashburton Grove, since renamed the Emirates Stadium, about 500 metres south-west of Highbury. The project was initially delayed by red tape and rising costs, but construction was completed in July 2006, in time for the start of the 200607 season. The stadium is named after its sponsors, the airline company Emirates, with whom the club signed the largest sponsorship deal in English football history, worth approximately 100 million; however some fans refer to the ground as Ashburton Grove, or the Grove, as they do not agree with corporate sponsorship of stadium names. The stadium will be officially known as Emirates Stadium until at least 2012, and the airline will be the club's shirt sponsor until the end of the 201314 season.

Regarding the poll options, there's a limitation of 15 options only. So I just put in those who has played more (according to http://www.arsenal.com/first-team/first-team-stats )

Voted for my RvP in the poll, lethal, can create and score goals, fiery and passionate..the only downside is he was always cursed with unlucky injuries.

The match was just superb! It's been a while since we last trash opponents by 5 goals margin!

Off topic-was going to buy the Arsenal away jersey later on,between Vermaelen and Nasri which one is a better choice to print on ah?Kinda torn between them..or maybe I just put another RvP..haha!

His quick feet and pinpoint accuracy rocks.

Arshavin - 3 assists. No doubt of his top class anymore
Nasri - ZIDANE is in ARSENAL NOW!!!
Bendtner - Although his goals are a simple tap in, but his position is top class
Eboue - I thaught he were very calm in front of goals. Hope he stays next and man coming seasons.

I think Arsenal had the right time to hit form. Win the remaining games and Arsenal will clinch both of this title laugh.gif

Ramsey sure had fun in that game haha

Wenger's faith in Bendtner pays off as Dane sparkles

QUOTE
Three days can be a long time in football as Nicklas Bendtner proved Tuesday.

Saturday against Burnley the gangly Dane's finishing prowess was distinctly Sunday morning pub league standard but on Tuesday it was worthy of the Champions League as his first Arsenal hat-trick helped power his side into the quarter-finals.

Bendtner, an industrial presence in a team full of artists, divides opinion at The Emirates like no other.

Willing worker though he is, he can on occasions look a little out of step with the silky movements of those around him.

He is an easy target for fans' when things are not going well but manager Arsene Wenger has always stood by him since spotting him playing for FC Copenhagen.

"It shows you how football can change very quickly," Wenger said of Bendtner after his side's 5-0 thrashing of the Portuguese that sealed a 6-2 aggregate win.

"It can go quickly up and quickly down. It shows that he had not lost his confidence and he came back with a good focus and belief, that's one of his strengths, his confidence levels remain relatively stable.

"He has the size and presence that we need because we are normally a very short team...he helps us offensively and defensively."

While Bendtner grabbed the match ball with two routine finishes and a stoppage time penalty, Wenger was quick to praise the impact of Samir Nasri and Andrei Arshavin whose pace and trickery tore Porto to pieces on the slick Emirates carpet.

Such was their impact that the absence of captain Cesc Fabregas went almost unnoticed while Nasri's exquisite solo dribble for Arsenal's third goal was sheer class.

"Nasri is developing very well," Wenger said. "What he showed tonight he shows in training and we expected that to come out in the games.

"He is a player with talent and he showed that tonight like he did Saturday and he has started to be efficient now. Tonight he made the first goal and scored a great goal. Great players assist and score goals."

Arsenal's thumping win finally allowed them to overturn a first-leg deficit in Europe for the first time since they beat Hajduk Split on away goals in the 1978-79 season.

"The statistics were against us," Wenger said of the nine subsequent occasions that Arsenal had failed to recover from a first leg defeat. "But historical statistics don't mean a lot if you have a good team on the pitch."
SOS

That why I love Arsenal very much. Principal is above all thumbup.gif

din manage to watch the game so seems like i missed alot.
Will look forward for replay in Astro.

Caught a glimsp of highlight in 811 this morning- both Arsha and Nasri dribbles makes the Porto defence like crown.
Really pity them when they return home.

On Favorite players... i won't vote- cause i love all of them!

i damn emo men, among all match i miss a 5 goal match thriller
....suicidal
but base on how you guys comment from the last thread and this fresh thread
the boys must be godly tonight.
especially bentdner, he definitely heard our call laugh.gif
gotta see nasri solo goal effort!

neways for the poll, i would have voted RvP
instead i went for Vermy
simply because RvP is injured.

first team into the Quarters, cant wait to see who is our next opponent gan jiongness.

With this form, I can see why AW wants MU/Chelsea.

Not to dampen the mood here but as mesmerising Arshavin is today attacking wise I'm not the very least impressed with his sloppiness in our own half which could have presented Porto a goal. A better side would have made us pay and I hope its just a one off.

I'll be skipping this poll this time around. Simply because I don't have a favourite apart from Fabregas and Fabregas isn't my favourite either. As long as you wear the red and white then you have my support. A more general poll next time would be better IMO.

bentdner goal was relatively easy. probably the first one needed that extra effort,im glad he converted those chances this time
but the architecht arshavin, was good. involved in the first, setting up the 2nd and 4th
midget power!

on nasri goal,
the idea of him dribbling well yeah it was good
but the bomb was his finishing
but to drill the ball hard, low to only 1 angle which is straight direct across him and from a tight angle.... rclxub.gif
that 1 quite difficult

the counter attack was damn nice, im not sure bout you guys, but its been a while since i last saw a good CA from our team
credits to Arshavin for crafting it and more importantly,to Eboue for making the match winner-runs.

bentnder penalty was kinda cool, he kept it low, wasnt that fast but it was curling away from the keeper.... thumbup.gif

aite, enough of this team self praise
some fan from the red jersey side also claimed porto was a pure noob this morning. just like how they claim when we beat milan
id like to see how they fare againts them today. id like a surprise buttseck for them.

samir nasri was impressive when there is no fabregas.
because he can play in his favourite position, in the middle.
nasri loves to run and beat defender, while fabregas use his intelligence and vision for killer pass.
but when both on the field, nasri seems isolated a bit.
thats just my opinion.

i am in total agreement. although we totally dominated the attacking portion of the pitch, we were defensively naive, surprisingly. sol campbell didn't have a night to remember... his shakiness caused us some heart stopping moments. vermaelen had to be an absolute monster (his super tackle towards the end of the game was just class. pure defensive class) to cover for him and also campbell's lack of pace and case of the jitters.

clichy was good, but his one schoolboy mistake where he total mistimed a routine clearance header could've cost us very dearly. similarly, song was good, but there were a few times that he got sucked into the attacking momentum and then he ended up losing the ball, leaving a huge gap in the middle. so again, it would seem like concentration and discipline is something that the arsenal players must focus on.

and like sigheart mentioned, the hero of them all was arshavin, doing all kinds of needless stunts and skills in our own half which wasn't the best thing to do. a couple of times he misplaced his passes very nonchalantly in the first half and it returned the attacking impetus to porto. so yes, the short one needs to buck up defensively. and that miss for what would've been the 3rd goal, that's almost unforgivable. =) aeroberg messaged me to wonder whether arshavin would get the same kinda condemnation bendtner would've received if it was bendtner who missed that chance instead. i guess i know the answer... =)

but overall, let's not take the gloss of the game. bendtner silenced his critics just like how walcott did by proving it on the pitch. i thought his penalty was absolutely beautiful. with penalties like these, even if the keeper can guess the right spot, he can't reach the ball cause it's right at the side. arshavin was tormentor in chief on the left and an attacking performance from him like that has been long overdue.

my favourite player: vermaelen. his contribution has been immense not just defensively, but scoring 8 goals for a defender during his debut season is really impressive. he doesn't talk big, just keeps his head down and gets the job done.

Actually, what we had last night (with Fabregas' absence) was something we experienced before in Henry's absence.

Before this, Henry's absence left the team with no clear focal point of attack or passes. Everyone was not pressured to pass the ball to him, thus everyone was more daring to try out what they wanted.

Yesterday, we noticed that without Fabregas, the passes were distributed quite evenly to the attackers (Nasri, Arshavin etc). I have no comment if this is always good but once in awhile, it does change the game we play.

I also agree that we didn't do well defensively. Luckily Porto players were not effective in front of the goal.

Considering our below-par and missing some key players in defence recently, I would prefer facing non-EPL team. The other 2 teams' strikers would have scored those chance Porto players had rclxub.gif

I like your analysis...Sometimes Fabregas should be on the bench if there is too many midgets on the field. This team is pretty balance.

For our 2nd goal, Porto players were too mesmerized by Arshavin's dance in the box that they simply didn't care about Bendtner positioning himself for the kill tongue.gif

Our boys are clearly brimming with confidence. The way they run at defenders, the way they take their chances... reminds me of our first game at Everton.

Haha . Common' , not every game I watched , Arsenal lost , don't be that superstitious to left out a Gunners fans not getting to watch his match . tongue.gif

I think I've watched most of their games this season except the game last night and the 4-2 against Bolton . No matter its a winning or losing game , I'm still watching the Gunners . smile.gif

17 min highlights... long enough?
1st half : http://www.mediafire.com/?wt2gh5jby03
2nd half : http://www.mediafire.com/?mj5nmkvzmyt

Quick one liners:

1. Porto's defence was shambolic, even worse than Burnley's.

2. Nasri... Hleb who?

3. Sol was quite shaky but Vermy verminated everything in his path.

4. No capi, no problemo.

5. I love Nicklas Bendtner.

Anyway... don't like the poll... it's assuming that everybody's favourite player is Fabregas. tongue.gif Mine will always be Titi and Bobby; but for this current team I love them all... equally... maybe a bit less for Silvestre due to his MU history. whistling.gif

1st hattrick for Nik, hopefully many more to come. The last European hattrick we had was probably Titi's one man show vs Roma.

Come on... Gallas deserves 2 years... enough with the 1 year extension for >30 yr old players.
If this is the strictly the case and Gallas chooses to leave, I don't think we can blame the player. I am sceptical about JD being able to slot in immediately after being out for a whole year.

Dunno. I remembered it was a big match lulz.

Anyway, MOTM for me is Arshavin, deadly on the left, created alot of chances for our attackers and did well trying to dribble towards the box.

again, without fabregas the team shows more flair and share more responsibility.

They're more daring and gets more chance on the ball compare to usual days.

nice team i would say. It is now more sustainable with/without injuries of players in Arsenal team. With 2 key player out, we still manage to cope with the pressure and share responsibilities. Not to mention, producing some greatest flair so far in ECL matches.

his positional sense has improved a LOT!

that's exactly what Arsenal needs

eduardo had the finishing skill but just wasnt there at the right place, right time.

Bedtner deserves the same praise that is given to other players such as Song, Diaby and ... umm the whole team.

Such tremendous improvements is obvious compare to the last season. And not to mention, it doesn't take that long time either. To develop regular youngsters to a world class footballer who fight for top spot in one of the hardest league in the world. Definitely worth waiting for

Bendtner is an average striker, he just got lucky yesterday nite. He cant dribble much in the penalty box. He still not an replacement to v. Persie. Somehow i hope to see Pavlyuchenko wearing Arsenal jersey.

i wanted Paly too but not at the expense of Bendtner.

We'll see how RVP comes back from his injury. I really hope he'll be out of WC this year and concentrate on getting his fitness back for next season. Build up from now... be the star of the tourney in 2014. wink.gif

AW will have to think long and hard about our keeper and CB position.

anyway, unsung hero of last nite...

ROSICKY! rclxm9.gif rclxm9.gif

QUOTE
Wenger kept his faith in Rosicky and even gave him a new contract. And we can all thank him for that. With his experience on and off the field he is one of those players whose contribution goes further than just his performances on the field. He is one of the players who can help those magnificent 6 young midfielders I mentioned before to become even better. He also can show them how dark the night may be sometimes, at the end the sun will come back to shine. He was one of the leading persons in his national team and I really think he is more than just a player for Arsenal.

So I like to salute Thomas Rosicky for his hard work on and off the field, and I know he will give us something extra in the weeks to come and all this with a friendly smile on his face and in the knowledge that he beat the injury demon and you see the joy on his face when he is playing. Maybe even he never expected to be out there again so you can see he enjoys it and a player who is enjoying himself is a player that is giving his best.

but paly is from out direct rival club. Plus redknapp have a real good relationship with man utd.

+ he won't come cheap, and there's no guarantee that he won't spoil the dressing room atmosphere

Still, i'm looking forward to AW's surprise in transfer market, buying some unknown player and shock the premier league of a big gem, which is yet to be polished. Song, Denilson, Vela, Eduardo is now starting to shine after a brief polishing. Hope to see more of em soon smile.gif

Good, but Arsene has yet to finish polishing this diamond.

If you look back at Nik's Arsenal career you will see how much he has improved. He was merely a battering ram in his early days, then during the Carling Cup games he established an orthodox number 9 position with Dudu being the number 10 but he proved to be more than that. The way he dropped deep and attempted passes showed us that he is developing another side of his game. His best position is pretty much still CF but as shown in the early games he is willing, and quite comfortable on the right and interchanging with Robin.

For those who've been here long enough would have seen me referring Nik as the blonde Anelka.... I actually retract that because his pace has not improved as much as we hoped. Nevertheless, his positioning is so much better now and with his tall, lanky posture he is actually more van Basten. His heading ability is probably the best in the team along Diaby, with Robin coming close too. Our wingers/fullbacks suddenly know how to cross now, and that can only be a good thing.

Will he displace Robin in the striker position? I'd say "complement" rather than "displace".

QUOTE(lauyah @ Mar 11 2010, 12:52 AM)
Bendtner is an average striker, he just got lucky yesterday nite. He cant dribble much in the penalty box. He still not an replacement to v. Persie. Somehow i hope to see Pavlyuchenko wearing Arsenal jersey.
*
I don't get it. A hattrick and people are still doubting him? Pavlychenko has done nothing to suggest that he is better than Nik; and Nik is the one who has more room to grow.

I wouldn't swap Nik for anyone in the world.

Comparing NB to pavly-dunnowhat-ko is simply a no brainer.
1st of all, Pavly...ko will be 29 this year, there's not much years left for him. Actually there are lotsa ppl still unconsciously forget that most of players are just 21-25. NB is only 21 & developing pretty well and getting rid of him is just like 'throwing $$$ into the sea'... laugh.gif

For the moment, most of the players + AW are overconfident after the win over porto. It's porto that was pretty dreadful. Just like before the 1st loss to MU & Chelsea. Hopefully AW will be able to develop a plan B rather than just stick to the current formation since it's proved ineffective against MU & Chelsea..

But, it's always wonderful to watch the lads to play the way they want to play and hopefully the ladyluck will stay will us.. thumbup.gif

i agree bendtner can get better n better with age and experience....we don't need to get rid him....seeing him at 21 coping with severe criticism and having a high confidence that he can be a world class striker just shows there is more to him....i also believe bendtner in the future will do something great for Arsenal and write his name in the history of the club....

Well, somehow people have unrealistic expectations of him... maybe they're expecting him to score a hat trick of RVP-ish stunning goals rather than fox in the box-ish goals. And to think that people were creaming their pants when we bought Eduardo because of his fox in the box style.

I seriously think that a lot of gooners are pampered by Thierry, RVP and Dennis's quality goals for so long that tap ins are like lesser goals to them.

a goal is a goal... like i gonna care how it went in... doh.gif

NB did a fantastic job to GET THE JOB WELL DONE... how many times can u see goals got in the back of the net in the style of Nasri or Henry? shakehead.gif

some of u just dun understand the advantages of NB's height and body size... he can langgar huge size defender to fight for the balls, he's tall and eventhough he's not some sort of super world class striker that might score all the time, but opponent defenders won't take chances of not marking him and that gives more rooms to others to storm forward like arshavin, nasri and fabregas...

a pure striker CF does not need to assist ppl... they are there in the right position to hack the ball in, be it softly, noobly, stupidly, dumbly or wateva way u wanna call it... his finishing still need brushing, no doubts, but he certainly played a vital roles in the team in order for everyone to be able to push forward...

Did anybody noticed the similarity between Adebayor and Bendtner. NB is not like player like Henry and Torres. With his physical appearance, when he was given enough chances. He will score.
But I believe NB is more than that with his age. Very bright future ahead of him I would say.

Never regret to support him since his days from the reserve

It's a rather graphic demonstration, too, that if you support a player and give him your trust, rather than turning your back on him on the basis of a bad day, he will repay you - so to all of us who gave him what was, in my mind at least, a heartfelt standing ovation on Saturday, I say well done.

No-one would argue against the fact that with Madrid topping the Spanish league and players like Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka in their team they looked a decent chance of winning the competition this season. No one is hailing Nik as a world class striker... in fact it is pretty much what Laudrup mentioned - Nik still needs to improve on his first touch. Whether he's consistent or not remains to be seen. He hasn't had enough consecutive starts in his preferred position for us to make a decent judgement. Even Robin required a fair amount of games in the CF before he truly integrated into our gameplay, let alone a Nik who is far less experienced.

Unlike certain players in our team who can do no wrong in many fans'/pundits' opinion, Nik is often being misquoted/misunderstood as being arrogant and talking louder than his actions. I see otherwise; all great strikers have an attitude, an aggression which makes them lethal in front of goal. Again, people forget he's still only 22... and the fact that he was Denmark's national team striker before he even reached 20.

The thing is that he has all the quality to be a top striker, now just to need time to show it off. I like his sense in front of goal, everytime he was at the right place and right time, that's what a striker need the most IMO.

Some update for the upcoming Hull game. No good news unfortunately.

Cesc will most likely miss the match. Gallas' status is still unknown and fresh doubts for Sol and Sagna.

QUOTE
Cesc struggling for Hull, two more doubtful

By Richard Clarke

Cesc Fabregas is highly likely to miss the trip to Hull on Saturday while Bacary Sagna and Sol Campbell are considered to be "doubts".

The Arsenal captain sat out the midweek win over Porto due to a hamstring injury and afterwards Arsène Wenger classed him as "50:50" for the game at the KC Stadium. When the manager spoke to TV Online on Thursday morning, his odds had got slightly worse.

"It is a little bit more than 50 against now," said Wenger. "That means he will be very short for Saturday. We will assess him today. He is starting to run now but we think it would a gamble to play him on Saturday.

"Apart from him, we have an uncertainty with Sagna on his ankle. We also have a problem with Sol Campbell and how he will recover. He finished the Porto game with cramp. They are ‘doubts' not ‘big doubts'. But we have to refresh the squad a little so we will see."

Ahead of the Porto game, Wenger admitted the calf injury that had kept William Gallas out for the past month was "back to the starting point". On Thursday, the manager did not know how long the Frenchman would be absent but he was starting the job of finding out.

"I don't know [about William]," he said. "Wednesday was a day of rest and recovery for the players so we have to deeply examine everything to see where we go."

The thing is that he has all the quality to be a top striker, now just to need time to show it off. I like his sense in front of goal, everytime he was at the right place and right time, that's what a striker need the most IMO.

yes very true .. he has that striker instinct hasnt he? just need more games to polish his finishing and pace .. hopefully he can be our `drogba` huhu

so sagna and campbell out? unleash walcott and eboue then! biggrin.gif but i think drop Song to partner Vermy instead of vermy/silvestre. midfield should be ok. I'm thinking something like this :-

-almunia-
-eboue-vermy-song-clichy-
-diaby-Nasri-Rosicky-
-walcott-bendtner-Arsha

subs : denilson, sol/silvestre, sagna, fabi, vela.

suddenly spoilt with choices... whistling.gif i believe this our strongest lineup. rosicky has proved that he still got it. He is industrious as well as no nonsense in defending. putting him behind Arsha would allow arshavin to stay up and link up with bendtner. Diaby patrolling just in front of the back 4 and eboue overlapping with walcott. woot! woot!

come on u gunners!

Interesting article regarding Woj. Great prospect.

Apparently he's earning big praises from the Bentford camp. BBC did an interview with him in Bentford:

The (same) youtube video is longer. Dunno if it was posted before

FYI Song will be suspended against Hull. Serving the 2nd of his 2 match suspension after collecting 10 yellow cards.

Tomas Rosicky has been added to the list of ‘doubts' for Arsenal's visit to Hull City.

On Thursday morning Arsène Wenger told Arsenal TV Online that Cesc Fabregas (hamstring) would probably miss Saturday's game while Sol Campbell (fatigue) and Bacary Sagna (ankle) might not make the trip.

"We have a little doubt about Rosicky, but we will check that tomorrow morning," said Wenger. "Nobody else is back, but we will lose Alex Song, because he is suspended.

"Everyone else has recovered quite well from Tuesday night. Campbell looks better than expected today. Sagna has an ankle problem but we will assess that tomorrow.

"We will see how it develops and who is available, who I can play. We know we have 48 hours to prepare for this game and it is quite needed.

"But [Fabregas'] chances of playing are 0.5 per cent - that means unless a miracle happens, he will not play. At the moment, he is out of Saturday's game."

adebayor suited us before but his off the field antics especially with his agent and also his locker room clique made AW decided to let him go.

Same thing with Hleb. Also Toure.

So, AW has made an example of these players and the current crop will have to think twice before they start flirting with other clubs or involved in off the field antics. I'm sure bendtner got his hari dryer treatment from AW when he was caught pants on the ground... pants on the ground... looking like a fool with your pants on the ground... eh... nyanyi plak. heheh

U see this year, there's no news about our players other than their performance on the field. Occasionally Barca DNA news will come out and that also turned away professionally by Cesc.

Now news mounting about Gallas leaving for Roma. I think that'll continue until May if Gallas still didn't sign anything with us.

other than that, no news at all regarding our players antics, in the locker room or outside. No ice cream... no 'my phone wasn't online", nothing. that shows u the solidarity and the unitedness of our current players. Everyone goes out and fight for each other... for the team... for the club. notworthy.gif

I don't think Bendtner will go. He'll be around with RVP and will spearhead us the next 5 years at least.

At this rate, I think AW will sell Denilson and maybe another player. With our current financial state, I think AW won't be force to sell any of the impact players.

Eboue might get a 2-yr extension. His current deal runs out in 2 years.

The way i see it, Denilson is the one we can afford to lose. Gallas might walk on Bosman and Sol too. however, i think Sol will think long and hard if AW decided to hand him a "pay as you play" contract ala Owen. Senderos also will have to think hard this coming summer. His contract will run out with us and he didn't really break into the 1st team at Everton after 1 1/2 months there. Maybe Everton will sign him on Bosman too.

other than that, nothing much really. Hopefully Djourou will return to action before the pre-season.
also... we might sign Chamakh on a free.

Fabianski (blunder king)

Bendtner

Almunia will stay on for at least 2 more years.

To be fair to fabianski, he needs more time on the field. He got the talent just lacking the experience and decision making.

Bendtner? i don't think so. RVP maybe... something like how we sold Henry.

I believe that fabianski will replace almunia just like how almunia replaced lehmann.
we all know they are not the top class keepers available but top class keepers are just hard to get, as many mentioned before
bendtner is the one for the future, he's already got physical advantages which can't just be trained, unlike those technical and tactical attributes which can be brushed up and improved

The one i see can be out of Emirates this summer should be Senderos, if Gallas relunctant to renew the contract, he is another one, this depend on if we win anything this season. Almunia no, Fabianski also no, not need mention about Bendtner, a huge NO unless he wants to go. I don't know why people dislike Bendtner so much, he is only 22 years old and to play like this level with his age, it is understandable and reasonable, he will only get better and better.

Anyone think Wenger will sell Eduardo? After the horrible injury, he is not the player he used to be, what a pity, you can feel that now he avoid the challenge and sometimes even afraid to take the ball. I hope same thing won't happen to Ramsey.

For Chamakh, ahem.... anything can happen, he is still not a Arsenal player, let's just focus on current season first.

Almunia & Fabianski - Agreed
Senderos - He's already one foot out of Emirates

Denilson - Keep him. Useful squad player who never makes noise about not playing. Why the heck would you want to sell a player like that?

Bendtner - Must keep. He's the only one that offers something different in our attack. Yes, if he arrives, Chamakh would also give us the aerial threat, but I feel Bendtner has other elements in his game other than his size. Based on the positions he's been getting in in the past few games, I'd even go as far to say that he's the elusive Fox in the Box we've been looking for.... Er.. just that this Fox needs to start scoring more.

well i think vela would be the next player out of our club...rumour has it that, the reason he doesn't get to play a lot is because of his partying life....wenger really hates players going to party a lot...he made fun of cesc about it on the "cesc fabregas show" 2 years ago...so if vela doesn't get his act right...he will be on the way out....

The Gunners are currently level on points with Chelsea (who have a game in hand) and are two behind leaders United, having won all four Premier League games since back-to-back defeats at the hands of their rivals.

They bounced back to beat Liverpool and having been much further off the pace earlier in the season, Wilson says this campaign could well follow the same pattern as that famous Double-winning year 39 years ago - right down to a crucial game at White Hart Lane, where Arsenal head on April 10.

"Ok after the Man United and Chelsea games, it was a huge downpoint for the club, the team and for Arsene," he said.

"But I was lucky enough to see him a couple of days later before the Liverpool game and I reminded him just how good his team were.

"I said then there are 13 games left, the run-in I think, is as good as you could wish for and I would remind you that 39 years ago, we'd just been beaten really badly by Brian Clough's Derby side - this is our double side of 1970-71 - and we had 13 games to go.

"I think we were 11 or 12 points behind Leeds United and everyone said we were out of it, that Leeds might as well start celebrating and we might not even finish second.

"But we won 11, drew one, lost one and won the championship by one point. What I am saying it is absolutely feasible, because if we did it these boys can do it as well."

QUOTE(super messi @ Mar 12 2010, 01:06 PM)
well i think vela would be the next player out of our club...rumour has it that, the reason he doesn't get to play a lot is because of his partying life....wenger really hates players going to party a lot...he made fun of cesc about it on the "cesc fabregas show"  2 years ago...so if vela doesn't get his act right...he will be on the way out....
*
I've never heard of news regarding Vela being a party animal... but quite a lot for Pedro though.
Vela has been injured/unfit due to the long travels for Mexican NT games, and with so many players in front of him who are in better form he will struggle to get chances. Nevertheless, if he is impatient and chooses to leave, he may potentially end up like many others before him.... Bentley, Pennant, Quincy, the list goes on.

Not too sure they have team like MU and Chelsea which could go on rampage form if they need too.
That's comparing to Leeds which drop like 15 points in the last 10 games back then?

Denilson oh Denilson... i thought he was another Gilberto in the making last season ? He was everyone favorite back then right?
Now he status was going to "Eboue" like ... The weaklist link in the team (count Silvestre and Fabianski out) ohmy.gif

This week game... sigh... late kick off again.
Sunday gonna be ZZZZZZZ.....

At lease Eboue and Gilberto have been performing well before where the former is getting better again.

Denilson...looks like take things for granted, lack of passion (no matter winning or losing looks the same for him), lack of progress, etc. He can be kept by the bench but i think let other youngsters to have a shot even better.
Last season we're arguing that his short passes were important thus he's spared. But it seems this season his performance really disappointing and he's no where developing into an attacking minded midfielder nor a holding midfielder.

As for Bendtner, he's gel-ling into the team now and ARSENAL is among the best teams in the world with world class development facilities, ect. why would he walk anelka's old path?

The poll is out when little Arsha has just pulled some magical tricks on the pitch. On other days, he won't get as much vote. There are some other consistent performers who deserve better votes me thinks.

I'm not a bendter hater but i really hope he won't get carry away with his hattrick.

BENDTNER QUICK WITH IDOL BOAST

part of the articles :-

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger hinted Bendtner’s ego can get the better of him when he said: “I hope the hat-trick will not give him too much confidence. I hope it gives him the desire to work even harder.”

Too late. Having blanked the English press who had rightly criticised all his missed chances against Burnley on Saturday, Bendtner was telling Denmark’s journalists that he will score more hat-tricks, that he belongs in the middle of Arsenal’s three-man attack and he is sure his club can win the Champions League.

No thanks to Wenger for sticking by him in the face of all the jokes and sneers, no thanks to Emmanuel Eboue and Andrey Arshavin who put in the donkey work for his treble, and no mention of getting his head down to become better.

Poor old Denilson... play also kena hantam, didn't play also kena belasah. With Eboue/Nik/Song/Diaby as previous examples, who is to say that Denilson will not come good?

People tend to forget that early in the season, our best and most balanced midfield combination was actually Denilson-Song-Fabs. For now I will say Diaby fits the bill better as he has slowly matured into the gladiator we hoped him to be, but with our injury-prone squad it would be best to keep everybody in the team. Why the heck should we ponder selling him (or Vela or Dudu as suggested in previous pages)?

We're keeping everybody... and hopefully Gallas stays too.

Denilson needs to take care of his back spasm. I think he still got some pinching nerves back there which limit his movement. I don't think he is not good enough but i do think he is a liability rite now to our title ambition. fingers crossed that he'll come thru ok. If not, he seriously needs to up his game.

Funny stuff. Particularly liked these

6. From Ctepan
Hi, Andrey, I want to play like you.
Arshavin: Play then.

14. From lambada
Hi, Andrey, in what order would you place the following animals: a tiger, a cow, a pig, a horse, a sheep?
Arshavin: A pig - it will always get the last place! A tiger, a cow, a horse, a sheep. And I’ll repeat that a pig is always the last one, because it is a pig.

16. From samara4ever
How do you see yourself in 50 years?
Arshavin: 78-year old man, with aching legs and a glamorous walking stick smile.gif

He is an asset to the team, not a liability.... until he cocks up like Luk did in Portugal. He hasn't really cocked up big time yet. Based on form and abilities plus our current game style, players like Nasri, Tommy, or Diaby would be a better bet to secure the final CM spot... but if they are not available I'll probably be more comfortable with Denilson than Eastmond (or even Frimpong/Coq) who hasn't really gotten enough top level experience.

What I notice you never follow Arsenal really much . We've been winning since Liverpool game . Although we lost the 1st leg against Porto , overall we still won . So that makes 4-5 wins in a run .

Why sell Denilson? 1 question. Who will replace him? Craig Eastmond? the injured Ramsey? or the unproven Diaby?
Diaby is good for the moment but he still need time to prove he is better. Where is the team without Denilson last season? Don't compare Gilberto and Denilson. They are different.
Bendtner's miss against Bunrley still haunts me. To me he might be another Adebayor. A player goes with form.
Clichy and Sagna still a concern. They are not performing. Lastly, goalkeeper. Speechless.

They are so many thing to bash but why Denilson?

i think the right question is where is the team WITH Denilson last season. i am quite sure he was a regular features in our midfield last season and i don't think it's that hard to see that dis-functioning midfield was the main reason for our really unsatisfied season we have last year. it is funny when you said Abou is unproven, yet using Denilson as some kind of superior comparison. both performances last season play major role in us not competing seriously for titles. differences being that Abou had stepped up a gear to date but i don't think the same can be said about Denilson

i support whoever wear our color. heck i was very supportive of Silvestre whenever he played. but in the days where other frustrated (to the fans) players i.e. Manu Eboue, Nik, Theo, Abou and Alex Song clearly stepping up a gear (or few gears in the case of Alex Song) this season, it is very easy to notice that Denilson is still not upping his game to the standard that we all hope he could reach

and last but not least, Bak and Gael are a concern? i mean seriously?

man.. all this title talk kinda jinx the moment. the pundits were just waiting for "same old arsenal... faltering at the end" moments. So, Gael Clichy, please shut up. in fact all the players should shut up. don't say anything remotely close to "we gonna win the league" or "we're better than invincible". I hope AW will send them straight. Focus on the game at hand. I love this by AW :

my thoughts exactly. its kinda like a bad omen when players talk too much. just look at Milan and Madrid in the Champions League, both had players saying their respective teams we're gonna win it. Madrid were even worse, i think it was Sergio Ramos who said Madrid will beat Lyon 3-0. its not just these games, we've all seen in in the past, some player goes about saying how their team will beat another and lose in the end. reminds me of what Robbie Keane said about Spuds being better than Arsenal earlier in the season, we all know what happened next lol.

A goal is a goal regardless of whether it's a deflection or a tap in or a 40 yard volley.... I don't understand why people just want to dig out whatever faults just to bash Denilson; like Nik in the past.

For those that have been with Arsenal long enough, knew that NB is 1 of the hottest prospect since his Birmingham days. His goals while playing for Denmark are quite spectacular yet some gooners not aware of that. I think some critized him out of frustration i.e failed to convert easy chances.. tongue.gif

The main thing for Denilson is not his faults being magnified, but rather that the other players progress making him looks 'static'. Since Arsenal have been producing Gem after Gem and we can witness such in making again in Song and Diaby. Song has been progressing steadily while Diaby turned to a new man only after his injuiry at the early season. Because of such good development from players, those progressing/developing too slow are easily spotted.

Actually i dont think mostly insisting to sell him but rather whether can we 'live' without him. On the other hand, whether Fabianski should be on the bench is also quite questionable. He may be talented but he's really cant cope with it mentally. After years with Arsenal he's still got cold feet and that's quite worry.. sweat.gif

I don't think Arsene Wenger is going to be sacked anytime soon. So far, i can only see Pep Guardiola is the only one who's capable of replacing him. With the current crop of players, given mourinho in Arsenal team he might not even be able to reach anywhere near top 3.

formation wise is up to Wenger to exploit. It's very much up to the player's adaptability and opponent's weaknesses. with so many unexpected injuries, formation change could sometimes be the answer

consistency

Too much money unspent??? are you kidding me?? lol!
1. We have to finance the new stadium debt, and mind you, when the pound is dropping it's definitely not going to be an easy task.
2. There are already so many signs that clubs are heading towards the financial hell hole, and you're saying we should spend more and not saving?
3.our squad is actually big enough and the subs are all capable of competing with 1st team regular, i don't really think there's a need to bring a big name player, which will indefinitely influence the dressing room morale

players are too young?? see where we're heading mate, top3-4 every season! and tell me why is young players are bad? Be realistic, this is not Football Manager game where buying leads to winning. This is the team of the future, and mind you, we're not looking at 1-3 years ahead, but further than that. We can't just buy players every season. With such young players can enter first 11, where do you think the future talented young players want to go in the future? They're all lining up at the Arsenal's youth academy!

Dont get me wrong, I want Plavy, but not to replace NB, just want to see him pairing with Asharvin. And we lack of striker as well. IF NB and Asharvin is injured, then we dont have much choice. I always love NB more than Adebayor since he came into the squad. He improved but still need to do more on that. His hattrick doesnt means he is really good. What bout his performance before that with Burnley? We need to see more consistency. Dont judge base on one game. duh!

We had some tall player, but somehow we cant head in some goals.

Yeah, I have to agree, i am too pampered with the like of Henry, Pires, Ljunberg, Dennis, Overmars, Petit or even Wiltord.

Cool down. I'm not complaining in (1-5). I was just listing the possibility of reasons for some fans belittling the players, in response to SG question.. They perceive Arsenal has the money to buy but AW is too stubborn on his youth policy, therefore costing Arsenal silverwares all these times.

I, for one, put the financial report at 110% importance while table position at 80%.

Did some of you guys even bother to read sample of my previous posts here?

Wrong. I guess it should be the opposite. We show everybody that we can play good football even by spending less.

But do we play better football if we spend? It will always be a question. biggrin.gif

After years with Arsenal he's still got cold feet and that's quite worry.. sweat.gif
*
Can we live without Denilson? Absolutely... We've survived the departure of Paddy and Titi who were the spine of the unbeaten team, and most recently we've thrashed teams without Fabs. The drastic improvement of Song and Diaby definitely makes Denilson seem mediocre, but again different players progress at different rates. Denilson, like him or not, was still one of our most consistent players last season and I personally don't think players become poor overnight. Diaby was appalling for more than 2 years after his fracture; while Denilson has just recovered from a vertebral injury (?fracture) less than half a year.

Again, if Arsene believes in him, he will keep in for long and continue to give him chances. Song and Diaby repaid le Boss's faith and I think Denilson will eventually do so, the issue here is when.

For Luk it's understandable that people are doubting his quality. It's unlucky for him to suffer several injuries during his relatively short Arsenal career, and the fact that he seldom gets regular games doesn't help him to achieve consistency or even improve. With Vito and Woj seemingly more assuring in goal it seems that Luk may eventually end up like Manninger/Taylor before him.

Plavy? I presume you're talking about Pavlyuchenko who has worse scoring feats than Nik. I agree that one hattrick doesn't elevate Nik to a top class level striker, but the same can be used on Pavlyuchenko who has done nothing to suggest that he will do better with Andy than Nik can. I admit I'm biased towards Nik here, after all Pav is a Spurs player, but we simply don't need to spend on someone who is unlikely to improve the team.

Assuming that Chamakh will be arriving this summer, we'd have Robin/Dudu/Nik/Chamakh/Theo/Vela as our strikers, with Andy/Tommy/Nasri all equally likely to start in the attacking triumvirate. I see no spot nor need for us to get another striker, unless it's a top class, proven hit man like David Villa who is unlikely to come anyway.

that's exactly what i'm trying to say. I'm not saying that we should sell Denilson but if we had too, he is the one we can cash on... and i think we can live without him. However, if he can pull something like what Diaby and Song did, then there's no need to replace or sell him then.

I'm not complaining about his lack of contribution the past few games because believe me, a back injury is as worst as breaking a leg. 1 moment u feel ok, then next u can't move. That's why i say he needs to take care of his back injury and comes back stronger. At the moment, like SG said he's not a liabity but i think he is not an asset either. However, he is a good squad player to have to give some breather to our midfield/defence.

I think he needs to regain his confidence back and play more horizontal rather than vertical. pick an area about 10 to 15 meters and patrol it left to right. throw in some tackles when needed and mark your zone. Too many times we've seen him in no man's land this season. I'm not quite sure why this has happened. Last season, Denilson is one of our core player and his contribution was very good. This season, he seems to lost a lot of steps and a lot of confidence. huh?

well.. we could've use Paly this year if we got him in the January transfer window. A 6 month loan should be just what we need but to buy the player outright, i don't think we need to. Just like u say there, we got abundance of talent on the striking department. if we assume chamakh is coming, then i think he is technically better than Paly.

Denilson has the least number of games this season compared to our Fabs/Song/Diaby. With a fairly long term injury disrupting his season, how is he able to prove himself? Rambo for some reason just doesn't get the same stick as Denilson, despite the fact that both of them tends to lose possession in vital areas of the pitch.

Arsene decided not to get any strikers in Jan because he knew Nik is coming back. And I would say that despite his misses vs Burnley, Nik has done exceptionally well. 2 in 2, then one international goal, and now a hattrick... the only thing I'd ask for is for him to score tonight.

It is quite fair i think to criticize Denilson so far since he is responsible for soe game we lost and at the same time won and score some important goals for Arsenal.

I personally think Denilson is still very young. He have lots to improve and do still. Anyway the i think if we start criticizing him somehow later he be the best midfielder in Arsenal. (after all we criticize Diaby,Song,Eboue and then they are the best players in Arsenal now.)

Still a very very strong squad despite missing some of our best players and fully capable of getting the needed 3 pts IMO.

Agree with commentator, Hull's pen looks soft... And he's spot on about the players looking irritated. Someone needs to tell the lads to calm down

yea now hull will return with a new plan for a 10-man team. bendtner has been really quiet, eboue has seen lots of action. the right flank is very bbusy today. how about introducing walcott there and eboue dropping a bit

1st half over...

overall the team looked a bit jittery and the flow seems disrupted by hull physical play. the penalty really soft and i thought it was offside. ref had some interesting decision early on but really appreciate it when he started to take control towards the end of the half. Boateng gone... Hull will be all men behind the ball in the 2nd half. time to unleash walcott.

hull are trying to use rough house tactics to break the arsenal rhythm. again, i cannot understand how punks like mendy and fagan are still in the match without a yellow card. those fellas are just fouling our players time and again. hesselink was offside before the foul and even then the penalty was absolute crap. to add insult to injury, later on, bendtner gets a yellow card when it was boateng to struck him. boateng should've received a straight RED card for striking another player. clichy gets tackled in the box, no penalty. bendtner gets choke slammed to the ground, no penalty. he may have sent off boateng (way too late for me), but the referee has been absolute rubbish besides that.

having ranted about hull and the ref, arsenal aren't as fluid today as well. not really happening for us. i think walcott would be a great player to bring on and terrorise the 10 men, wear them down so that we can bang in as many goals as possible and thoroughly punish their sorry @$$e$.
