in malaysia, the rankings don't really matter.
people are more concerned about the price, environment, and where their friends are going to study.

QUOTE(rubrubrub @ Jul 31 2010, 12:49 PM) no more like just where their friends are going to study. hmm... it is? why is notts ranked lower than monash? i though notts has more money poured into research and better facilities. bro..when we talk about this ranking thingy.. we compare internationally..go and have a look at notts in uk and monash in australia.. if we wanna look closer here in malaysia, you can easily see who has more financial backing. nottingham's campus is big, no doubt about it, but where is it located? compared to monash. the difference of land prices in these 2 areas are certainly very big. QUOTE(eXPeri3nc3 @ Jul 31 2010, 12:57 PM) me too.going monash all alone. |

QUOTE(exzau @ Jul 31 2010, 04:35 PM) link to arwu: http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2009.jsp lolz. that survey is 100% based on academics which is unfortunately not quite suitable in todays world.this is how qs-times calculate their rankings: http://www.topuniversities.com/university-...simple-overview this is how arwu calculate it: http://www.arwu.org/ARWUMethodology2009.jsp compare for yourselves we are talking more about graduate attributes, about high employment rates of students who graduated from that uni. not how many Nobel Prize winners that uni has. 20 marks for this criteria. astounding. having a Nobel Prize winner does not guarantee quality education for the students. * For institutions specialized in humanities and social sciences such as London School of Economics, N&S is not considered, and the weight of N&S is relocated to other indicators. see, these rankings dun even cover those aspects. what? means LSE is bad because it does not have scientific research? on the other hand, if you wanna look at research and work in the acedemic field for the rest of your life, then yes, please follow that arwu rankings. having Nobel prize winners and whatever award holders as your lecturers will certainly make a lot of difference in your thesis and research work.. Added on July 31, 2010, 5:18 pm QUOTE(exzau @ Jul 31 2010, 04:15 PM) you are probably referring to Times-QS ranking where monash is ranked at 45 while nottingham is at 91 (http://www.topuniversities.com/university-rankings/world-university-rankings/2009/results) but this ranking is misleading as it focuses heavily on surveys and peer reviews (fake) not only times.ARWU ranking is more established and accurate as it focuses on research output and quality of professor. Here, nottingham is ranked at 83 while monash is at 201-302. entryman has posted few other ranking bodies in his previous posts and monash outranks nottingham in general. QS-Times and Arwu are the two most popular rankings that are mostly reffered to. what have got against students from africa? those who managed to got into those top uni in UK and australia are even better than you and I. producing creative & innovative students doesn't mean they will succeed in the working world. QUOTE(DJFoo000 @ Jul 31 2010, 06:41 PM) aiyo, in the end of the day, a degree is to cari makan ma. Can cari makan enough lo. who classify them into respective tiers? *takes cover b4 anti-IPTA come shoot me* @zstan, no, the 'tier' thing in Setara is terbalik from what is the norm in international standards. So, internationally, Tier 1 is like the elite schools. UNott is considered Tier wat ah? Nottingham Trent is Tier-3, right? |

QUOTE(rubrubrub @ Jul 31 2010, 08:23 PM) yeah agree a degree is to cari makan. it doesn't entirely define who u are and if u really wanted to gain more knowledge. There are ton's of cheaper means to do that. anyway i've checked out monash and nottingham. I'm going to enrol to nottingham this september in social science department studying applied psychology with management studies. not really..graduating from a prestigious uni gives u an upper hand when u apply for MNC.. quoted from entryman |

QUOTE(DJFoo000 @ Jul 31 2010, 10:23 PM) Ah I thought a good analogy. Tier system is much like the social class in society. It's not official, but it's just taken as it is. not really as well. But locally, Nott and Monash graduates are considered competitive candidates, right? after your first/2nd/3rd job... nobody will ask where did you graduate from anymore... |

QUOTE(Cenarius @ Aug 5 2010, 08:28 PM) went to nottingham today to apply. weird though, maybe i went on a wrong timing, but the whole campus looks deserted. i swear the number of students i saw were less than my total fingers. it's SUMMER holiday broooooo~~ btw, anyone heard of applicants facing rejection from the institution? the office guy told me that successful application is based on the results and how strong my personal statement is. my results are mediocre, not sure if the statement will propel me forward.. |

QUOTE(tanjinjack @ Aug 15 2010, 07:28 PM) I have been thinking this question for two years. Too hard to build a room in a forest I guess. Added on August 15, 2010, 7:29 pm465 is two people share one bathroom where it's one door away from the toilet, and it's by Pioneer (slightly nearer to campus.) 435 is few people (4?) share one bathroom, two doors away (your room door then the toilet door), and it's by Perintis, further a bit lo. one door away means? if few doors away then cheaper? this is an individual unit or a whole hostel building? |

rm465 is cut throat la...
especially so when its in the 'forest'..but usually students who can affords nots are from above average to well to do families and they are taking advantage of this.. my previous hostel at ucsi..2 person bedroom..full furnished with a big cabinet and shoe cabinet..bed..table..all in all rm420 per month..although we need to share the toilet.. however the toilet is cleaned every alternate day by a cleaner...there's a pantry with microwave n fridge..and laundry services is included.. and i thought mine was expensive. |
