But can't deny, just take for example mechanical ranked by guardian is 2nd in UK. Meaning, anytime better than 3 quarter of the world.

so means only mechanical engineering is the course worth going in Notts?  hmm.gif

No la, just the best example.

Many of the others would be top 10 and also top 15 in UK.

if we have on campus accomodation, are we allowed to have friends overnight?
*
According to rules, no more than 1 person is allowed to stay in the room. Coz it's single occupancy.

But similar to hotels, people just do it hush hush. No one's there to check.

Hotel situated at the nearby town.

Either 5 km, or 10 km away.

Hey zstan makes me feel like I should have chose Monash over Notts back then. lol

But not really. I'd prefer the UK system over the Australian. Australian for me would take longer in terms of accomplishment.

And hey, Notts is one of UK's top 15 universities, and some of its programmes are among the best in the country (based on rankings), e.g. the Mechanical Engineering is 2nd place in UK.

With the top 15 universities, and compared to the top 8 universities, it really doesn't matter much. If we were to compare every single thing, I'd even say holders of UK degrees will possess more recognition in the international corporate arena if compared to an Australian degree. But it doesn't really matter very much when the universities are among the popular ones in the country, you can say it's on par, and what you've just gotta do is obtain at least a distinction/second class upper. You can say there's a difference if you take ANU and compare it with Notts though, if the course years being equal, I'd go for ANU. Sometimes it's the prestige that matters.

do u have the link for ARWU?

Added on July 31, 2010, 4:18 pmyeah it made me question the reliability and the validity of the published ranking in newspaper.

Added on July 31, 2010, 4:18 pmbut didn't care much cuz as long as u get a 1st class honour. ranking somewaht plays very lilttle significance.
*
The newspaper ranking, do you mean the Setara ranking? If so, Monash & Nottingham are in Tier 5, and are only in the list based on alphabetical order.

and if notts uk is ranked higher in UK, does it matter to malaysia campus'?
*
Yep. Because we're being awarded the same, identical degree.

To further confirm it, (at least for the business school) EQUIS and AMBA accreditation of Nottingham UK take into account the programmes delivered in Malaysia and China.

not only times.

entryman has posted few other ranking bodies in his previous posts and monash outranks nottingham in general.

But I do hope you get the idea that a 2nd tier university will always possess the good of a 2nd tier, and never a 1st tier.
2nd tiers are usually on par in quality and prestige (overall), with some societies favouring one over the other.

Is Monash Tier 1?
*
I wouldn't say so.

I would say.. Imperial is.

Simple, take our results for example, for your undergrad you could have got into Monash/Nottingham, but not Imperial.

And you wouldn't want to go to Curtin/Swinburne.

And after you have obtained your undergrad degree, and got at least a second class upper, and in many instances a first class, only then are you considered into places like MIT/Imperial (1st tier) for graduate studies.

(just making a general assumption and comparison of "tiers" here).

who classify them into respective tiers? hmm.gif
*
In terms of general consensus on the respective "place" and "prestige" in social system.

Let's say, in the UK is would be something like..

Oxbridge/Imperial/LSE/ Warwick/UCL/etc.
Durham

Bath Loughborough
Nottingham and the likes
etc.

Nottingham Trent
Oxford Brookes
etc.

Not exactly sure about the above accuracy of placings, but it's something similar.

Not only that. Some jobs, in fact many jobs that you may have not heard about, only take in students with degrees from "top tier" universities. Nottingham/monash also very tough to get in, if it's even possible.

Ah I thought a good analogy. Tier system is much like the social class in society. It's not official, but it's just taken as it is.

But locally, Nott and Monash graduates are considered competitive candidates, right?
*
It's not official. But it's in the life and blood.

What else can be better, locally?

not really as well.

after your first/2nd/3rd job... nobody will ask where did you graduate from anymore...

Well, it definitely is important too.

Think along the lines of recognition, prestige, and the multiplier effect and trust/favouritism people have on you.

for the september intake foundation programmes, if i completed until spm (11 years) + another year foundation in another college, does that count as 12 years of formal edu?

Should be alright. Why don't you just give them a call, takes only a minute to answer your question.

Can't verify for you as I don't think anyone in here went into the Sept intake. I was in April intake.
