lol..if u really want to compare world rankings..

monash is at 45 while nottingham is at 91..

according to times higher education rankings for 2009...

but of course..both uni have their respective strengths and weakness. smile.gif
*
There are other rankings indicating otherwise. That's why i mentioned, "is a strong contender". Hehe. Can't really compare, coz as you've mentioned, both have their respective strengths and weaknesses. I guess the major consideration students in Malaysia have to make when choosing between Monash and Nottingham is the study environment. One is a modern and classy complex, the other is more of the outdoors, greens, sprawling park concept.

I read somewhere that say the standards in M'sia campus (MBA course, IIRC) is higher coz our students are too competitive. They had to lower their passing mark (or some other indicator) in UK Campus to compete wit M'sian campus students. Forgot where already.
*
Oh wow. But If I do go for a MBA, I probably would seek other universities, since my first degree is from Nottingham.

i don't know how notts msia operates, but if you attend any of the unis in uk or oz, you will have 2 sessions of contact per week, a lecture of usually 2 hrs (not compulsory to attend), and a tutorial/practical of 2-3 hrs conducted by tutors, who are advanced students (compulsory with attendance marks given).......

the lecturer shares his knowledge at the lecture, it provides a frame work, and a direction for that particular topic, you are expected to do research yourself, and the tutor will help if you still have problems, on a one to one basis........

if you still cannot understand, maybe they have chosen the wrong student for the course........
*
That's exactly how it operates here too.

But you can't get ALL of the students emerging from 11 years of schooling based on a teacher-centric classroom to adapt almost instantaneously to this delivery method, can you? Well, those who adapt fast are among the brightest ones.

Anyhow, that doesn't change the fact that the lecturer should be an able communicator. An able communicator is able to get his point across and share his knowledge with the students efficiently, and effectively. He can be a great researcher, but what I'm pointing to here is communication skills and method of delivery. Some lecturers are just great, while some are on the other end of the scale, but generally, they're OK.

Probably those who can't understand are the ones who're more proficient in their mother tongue, or who are still very much tied down to the teacher-centric style. [Give them time to adapt] But it doesn't really matter whether you fully comprehend (although comprehension would be a bonus), 'cause in the end, you're supposed to spend all and most your time on self-reading and research.

Hehe, but of course, I'm not encouraging, condoning, or in any way saying that their status is excusable.

Students in this kinda state have to catch up, and not just sit blindly doing nothing. That "tidak apa" mindset has to go.

Take the initiative to open up to the world, constantly challenge your beliefs and thoughts to ensure they are enriched. If you ever feel that you're superior, comfortable at your current level, or smart enough, then you obviously have stagnated and failed to progress. Buck up and restart your pursuit of higher achievements.

May i know do we need to pay for parking fees if we park our car inside the university? Forgot to ask this question during the open day...haha
*
No Fees whatsoever.

Added on July 11, 2010, 5:37 pmThe only other thing you need to do is to go to the security office at the ground floor of the yellow building, aka the Student Association, or more commonly known as SA. You have to get a car sticker from them, as well as your student ID.

I see. Thanks.

Is there any fees i need to pay to SA in order to get the car sticker?

And i remember the senior who brought us for campus tour that day told us that we're not allowed to park in certain parking slots, can you tell me more about this? cos if parked wrongly, fines will be imposed on the car owner.
*
Oops. I have to clarify, you don't pay fees to the Student Association (SA). I meant the Yellow Building can also be called the Student Association Building.

The security office is located within the SA building, on the ground floor.

For the car sticker, you don't have to pay anything.

Yep, you should never park in slots for disabled students. Also don't park at the slots for staff, unless it's after office hours.

Some places, such as next to junctions, where you will make it difficult for cars to make the turn, are to be avoided too. Actually all these are just plain common sense.

Added on July 11, 2010, 5:53 pmSo in addition to my comments above on parking, the rule of thumb is to always locate a valid parking slot first. If you can't, next step to do is to park along the yellow line where many other cars are parked. But make sure you adhere to the rule above, i.e. not to park near main junctions, because that's where you kena clamp.

haha alrites.

So there will be signs indicating the which slots are for disabled individuals and which are for staffs only rite? If yes, then should be ok, dont have to worry of parking in wrong slot.  biggrin.gif

I see there are alot of parking space near the chemical engineering department, is it ok for other students (not chemical engineer) to park thr?

Added on July 11, 2010, 5:57 pm

Ok noted. But park along the yellow line wont kena saman? lol
*
Yep, you can park anywhere you like but not in staff and disabled slots. You see a lot of parking there, but wait till sem starts, it'll be full tongue.gif , as well as most other places. Usually you'll have to park near the sports building, or even further. Real long walk, probably 10 minutes, but what's that compared to exploring each floor in MidValley eh?

Private property, how to kena saman? Kena clamp only. lol

I don't get it either, till the engineers enlightened me about it. I find it pretty screwed up. You don't do 4th year, it won't be recognized here. Like wtf.
*
But is the 3 year programme recognized in the UK itself?

I think it is recognized..
All prog in Nott is being recognised by UK board, only Malaysian board does not..Kinda protective I guess?
*
In this forum, in another thread that sprung up after that news was announced, I remember someone mentioned that Malaysian board follow the UK board style.

But since you say that the UK board recognises the degree.. then which is correct?

Or rather, what is the difference between the above statements?

some UK unis offer a foundation programme..
And A levels are Pre-U,so shouldn't be accounted for 4th year.

@entryman:I am not sure though but the Director of Studies told us that our degree is being recognised in UK,in fact most of the places in the world.
*
Oh yea, as pointed above, accredited and recognised are different.

So, it's definitely not an issue about the recognition.

The only issue to consider is, is the 3 year programme accredited by the Board of Engineers in UK/Europe?

And even if the accreditation is present, how long has it been accredited? And were there any hot debates/challenges regarding the accreditation? Or is it widely accepted in the UK that the 3 year programme is of considerable standard?

Added on July 19, 2010, 4:13 pmAnyway, this is the link to search the UK engineering council.

http://www.engc.org.uk/registration/acad/search.aspx

I placed a search, and Nottingham MALAYSIA has only 16 courses accredited by them.

Some are 3 years, and some are 4 years.

Go check em out.

And in the end if you find out that it's really a problem with Malaysia's council, then I say that's one more reason for you to expand overseas.

There's no need for accreditation for other courses that is not engineering right?

--

There are accreditations biggrin.gif

For business programmes, there's the AMBA (Association for MBAs) for the MBA programmes, and EQUIS (European Quality Improvement System) for the management programmes, etc.

Sadly, Electrical Engineering isn't in the list of BEM accreditation either. I wonder why it is not in the list, do they miss it out somehow?
*
This is the list. I see Electrical Engineering in there.

http://www.bem.org.my/v3/body/services/acc...n_list/UNIM.pdf

All the accredited ones in the list are 4 year programmes.
