The Emotional Highbury and The Grand Ashburton Grove

Highbury 1913-2006

For the majority of their time in south-east London, Arsenal played at the Manor Ground in Plumstead, a three-year period at the nearby Invicta Ground between 1890 and 1893 excepted. The Manor Ground was initially just a field, but the club installed stands and terracing in time for their first Football League match in September 1893. They played their home games there for the next twenty years (with two exceptions in 189495), until the move to north London in 1913.

Arsenal Stadium, widely referred to as Highbury, was Arsenal's home from September 1913 until May 2006. The original stadium was designed by the renowned football architect Archibald Leitch, and had a design common to many football grounds in the UK at the time, with a single covered stand and three open-air banks of terracing. In the 1930s, the entire stadium was given a massive overhaul, with new Art Deco West and East stands constructed, opening in 1932 and 1936 respectively; in addition, the North Bank terrace had a roof added, which was later bombed during World War II and not restored until 1956.

At its peak, Highbury could hold over 60,000 spectators, and had a capacity of 57,000 until the early 1990s. The Taylor Report and Premier League regulations forced Arsenal to convert Highbury into an all-seater in time for the 199394 season, reducing the capacity to 38,419 seated spectators. This capacity had to be reduced further during Champions League matches to accommodate additional advertising hoardings, so much so that for two seasons (199899 and 199900) Arsenal played Champions League home matches at Wembley, which could house more than 70,000 spectators.

Final moments - the emotions run high in Highbury

Ashburton Grove 2007-present

Expansion of Highbury was restricted because the East Stand had been designated as a Grade II listed building and the other three stands were close to residential properties. These limitations have prevented the club from maximising the revenue that their domestic form could have brought in recent seasons. After considering various options, in 2000 Arsenal proposed building a new 60,000-seater stadium at Ashburton Grove, since renamed the Emirates Stadium, about 500 metres south-west of Highbury. The project was initially delayed by red tape and rising costs, but construction was completed in July 2006, in time for the start of the 200607 season. The stadium is named after its sponsors, the airline company Emirates, with whom the club signed the largest sponsorship deal in English football history, worth approximately 100 million; however some fans refer to the ground as Ashburton Grove, or the Grove, as they do not agree with corporate sponsorship of stadium names. The stadium will be officially known as Emirates Stadium until at least 2012, and the airline will be the club's shirt sponsor until the end of the 201314 season.

Sleepy head reporting in. Will be a long day today.

I've read a number of comments praising how great we are in this game, who, who and who has superb performance. Really? really we play well and created many chances? We had our good normal smooth play?

Our becoz we finally win- and to a "TOP FOUR" team?

We won because just a glimsp of brilliance up front. Other than that, we do not really create many chances. For those few we created, be blew it, wasteful as usual. AA, Rosky just to name at least 2.

Our back 4, + 2( diaby - song) has done pretty neat. But then again, we are not facing the strongest liverpool side. Maxi had few chances, but if drop the foot of torres- it could have scored. Kuyt- not at his best. Ngog- well, just No GO.....

On the other hand, i see many AA's first touch which fails. Cesc also not at his best, partially those around him not moving/creating enough space. Bertner still not match fit- but he will never going to be as agile as we hope to see. TW14, much has been said.

A win still a win, it is still 3 points and 3 point gain to the leader. Cheers and i do feel the histeria as well.
Yes- we have hope as most of difficult game are over. My view is those remaining- it is only up to ARSENAL to make the game easy, or difficult.  [city with exception, they can go crazy and rampant at time] In situation like this, it is better to focus on ourself in winning most of the remaining game.  No point to wish other team lose/draw, but we ourself can't pick up the 3 points.

6 points- different, 36 out for grab. How many can we afford to drop?
I recockon if we can get 30 out of 36, it will be a close fight. Any less - we are gone.

MY MOTM = GALLAS!!!

If u guys saw the counter by Liverpool where Ngog was ahead of both of our CB without being offside and i thaught damn is going to be 1-0 down.Vermaelan tried to push him away buy failed but just right before Ngog shot on goal, he made a superb back tackle to bring the ball away.I was like omg wtf how did he do that man.HIs clearance etc all was perfect today.

Now,back to title race so soon yea Arsenal tongue.gif

QUOTE(tenno @ Feb 11 2010, 09:03 AM)
Finally.. something to celebrate. Great win.

But I'm totally, totally mad by Fabregas' actions in the final minute. Getting booked & then (dun tell me it was unintentional) raising his arm to hit the ball from Gerrard's freekick. We were extremely lucky that the referee decided to end the game & lucky again that he was standing on the line. On any other day, maybe our unlucky day, it could've been a penalty & we could've seen all the efforts in 90 mins of football blown away just like that (& maybe another Gallas outburst). What was he thinking ? I thought we only had 2 madmen in our team (Lehmann & Eboue), maybe Fabregas wanna join the club.

I dun care what y'all think about what I wrote, Fabregas had no business getting booked that way & raising his arms like that. Good win nevertheless.

QUOTE(rich8610 @ Feb 11 2010, 09:05 AM)
lol..dia by by score le..so rarely he can scores.hehe..zz..Mu still can draw even red card. Both mu and chelsea must lose 2 more games oni arsenal got chance to title race.. everton so geng.zzzz..
*
QUOTE(Phalanx @ Feb 11 2010, 09:13 AM)
Considering our morale was at a low after we had the back to back defeat, I'd settle with a win to boost our morale even though we may not necessarily put up a dominating display.

Against Man Utd, Chelsea and Liverpool, the chances to score will definitely be few and far in between given that their defense are tight - don't forget that Liverpool have kept 6 clean sheets in their previous 7 matches. The difference between the matches against the top two and this is that we converted our chance.
*
QUOTE(WallaceZai @ Feb 11 2010, 09:17 AM)
Good job done by gunners and glad to see Nani sent off rclxms.gif
*
QUOTE(ESLord @ Feb 11 2010, 09:23 AM)
Agree, agree.

There for what I say is : Good result. Not really good game/good play.

also bravo for the Gallas' superb pin point challenge on Ngog. that is very bold as any mistake = Penalty.
*
QUOTE(Kimie @ Feb 11 2010, 09:24 AM)
Arshavin - thought that can goal but thru to net... sweat.gif
Rosicky - Damn lar why did't try that ball some more wanna touch2 in penalty box.. otherwise sudah goal doh.gif (luckily you & Bendtner made a great move that let Diaby score ... rclxm9.gif )
Gallas - Superb beb your tackle  sweat.gif (AW renewal his contract please)
Fabregas - He seems not 100% like so tired edi... his cross damn not as usual

Most of all Gunners had wake up from their bad dreams....yeay!!!
*
QUOTE(sakaito @ Feb 11 2010, 09:31 AM)
well, Arshavin better quickly find his scoring boots again. it's getting closer and closer but no end product yet. haih...

I think with Bendtner in the game, AA got more movement and it's like a bit of weight been lifted from his shoulder.

Nasri broke his jaw is it? argh.. damn it.. just when he was getting into the groove of things.

all in all.. like some said, not really dominating game but just good enough to win. That's what we need.

Now, Rosicky please shoot!

anyway, we won't be having any games this weekend until next mid week vs Porto. Good la... the players need some rest after the gruelling 4 match.

as AW puts it clearly;-

Nobody realises what it is to play Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool on the trot. Physically and mentally it is very demanding especially with the two massive disappointments.

i didn't watch the match (had to get enough rest cause gotta drive back to hometown tonight), but i'm really happy that we've managed to win ugly. just wanted to request that we do not goad about the victory and incite other forumers who do not share the same view with us. regardless of how different our opinions are, we're still arsenal supporters. let be gracious to each other. =)

anyway, wishing all those who celebrate CNY gong xi fa cai and to those who will be driving back to their respective hometowns, do drive safely and be courteous!
