Craving for more bass?

Don't worry, you're not alone, not everyone are using bassy PC speakers/headphones. Something has to be done to get those thumping bass: keep the bass, reduce the rest, turn it up!

Don't be fooled by commercial software such as SRS Audio Sandbox, SRS Premium Sound, SRS TruBass, Dolby Natural Bass, DTS Boost, DFX Audio Enhancer. They offer you more bass but the mids and highs are squashed and with their poor algorithm your music are going to sound dull the second the beats peak around 0dB.

Don't have foobar2000?

2.1 Speakers - Find the best location for your subwoofer:

Subwoofer performance significantly depends on your room acoustic. If you have not try setting up the subwoofer in different spots / rooms, I suggest you do, so you know your real subwoofer performance .

Just for an example, my Klipsch iFi has been setup in more than 10 spots in different rooms, even at different house. So I know how bad it sounds on my bedroom and how good it sounds at my computer desk. Therefore I use different EQ settings for the same speakers if they're placed in different rooms.

2.1 Speakers - Determine your subwoofer frequencies:
If you have no idea on which frequencies you want to add, watch this video and listen from 100Hz to 30Hz without changing your volume level. Now you have an idea of which frequencies you want to add / subtract.

Enable and configure the Equalizer:
View > Equalizer > [55HZ] [77HZ] [110HZ] [156HZ]

More BASS:
user posted image
Raise [55HZ] slider up and click auto-level , adjust until you are satisfied with the bass.

Reduce some muddy bass:
user posted image
If you feel your subwoofer is a little 'muddy' (Edifier R501), you can try to reduce [110HZ] slider. Next, if you feel your subwoofer is rather boomy (Logitech Z Cinema), you can try to reduce the [77HZ] slider instead.

Headphones / In-Earphones:

f you're using good headphone or high end subwoofer, you might want to get bass lower than the 55hz foobar2000 offer. This is where the VST plugin in foobar2000 is useful. In the previous download link I've included VST plugin, SH-1 Equalizer and Voxengo SPAN.

Enable and configure SH-1 and SPAN:
File -> Preferences -> Playback -> DSP Manager -> Enable SH-1 and SPAN . Once enabled, you can access them through View -> DSP

SH-1 Equalizer:
user posted image
You can increase 30hz , 40hz , and 63hz bar here. Do note that if you increase more bass, be sure to reduce the input level (left bottom corner) so there is no clipping or distortion.

Voxengo SPAN:
user posted image
Use SPAN to check for clippings. Set the audio channels to 2 or Auto (left top corner). Check the clippings value and ensure it is always 0.

Caution: I am not responsible for your headphone / ear damage if you set too much bass or allow too much clipping.

I tweak my cheap system with SRS Audio Sandbox to play my sub at 100hz and it's great.
it's like tweaking foobar biggrin.gif

well this tweak impressed me alot, otherwise i wont even post it twice. lol. i remember my x-fi "bass boost" at around 40hz also gives good feedback. but i dont have any x-fi now.

anyway, this should be great for those who complaints C3 bass is soft.. and, for those muddy subwoofer like M3300 and S330. set the subwoofer to 1/2 and use this foobar. im pretty sure no more muddy bass...

well, i never had an U1. but i do have a X-Fi 5.1 USB before. before i sold it off because of incompatibility issues with my intel desktop. the soundcard gives performance. but i'd rather use onboard since my last speaker wasn't so great. then i upgraded to klipsch ifi. i can hear x-fi is much better than onboard, including the bass. (not very much though).

anyway have you tried the foobar EQ? doesn't it add some bass to the C3? im using it with my R501 (running in 2.1) mode.

yeah.. but i mean the channel mixer's "bass redirection" didn't actually work because of no dedicated subwoofer channel in stereo output. if i send the sub to all channel it didn't sound as good compared to me using 5.1. but in case my mistake, how's your channel mixer settings?

Oh, just noticed, this is for 5.1? I am actually using Logitech Z2300 2.1. Still better than Winamp.

Btw, got tips on how to impove my onboard sound? It really sounds like tin kosong. Even my cheapo netbook sounds better.

yea.. i mean the channel mixer.. for 2.1, i just use EQ and disable the 5.1 channel mixer.. sounds better somehow here..

to improve sound, there are DFX, SRS audio soundbox, ffdshow decoder, TVS SRS (winXP). but in the end i love how foobar2000 pawns all of them.

if u're using realtek, make sure you disable all the unessential add-ons such as:
- dolby headphone
- dolby prologic IIx
- dolby natural bass
- bass management
- environment
- loudness equalization
- room correction

best is (in vista or win7) disable all sound effects. and, for realtek, you must tick "full range speakers" in realtek control panel. otherwise bass is lowered. if you're using winXP u can try toshiba virtual sound which i use on the other XP machine. warning: TVS doesn't work with all onboard sound.

it's : LyricsPlugin from www.lyricsplugin.com

LyricsPlugin is created for the Winamp and WMP series. It search for the song title name and artist name. then it look up in it's own database and display the lyrics. If you do not find the lyrics for your song, you can always click the "edit" button and put it on your own. It also allows you to change the text and background colour.

Note: Lyrics plugin is sensitive to artist and title name. so if your songs title and name are mixed up, it wont find the correct one. since my songs library are quite "neat", i can automatically find most of the lyrics on each song i play.

do try it.. if you're using Winamp or WMP series, just download it from the official website. it's one plugin that is simple yet very useful.

Update on 23th Feb 2010 : Updated foobar2000 to v1.0 instead of v0.9.6.9

hmm well, for soundcard i previously used an X-Fi USB 5.1 but beware, it has compatibility problems with my previous intel motherboard desktop. works flawlessly with other brands though... and i replaced it with X-Fi XtremeAudio which is actually cheaper. sounds good.. are u under laptop / desktop?

-edit: add some more info:

for VIA HD Audio Deck in control panel, make sure u disable ALL Qsound and similar sound effects. plus, in control panel, go to sound, single-click "Speakers" and in left bottom click "Configure". make sure the speakers is set to stereo, next, and tick "Full range speakers". restart afterwards.

Thanks for sharing , does the above setting only makes C3 sounds more solid bass ? Any other thing can tweak for C3 ?

I'm planning to get C3 as R501 is a ill complicated from what you guys are mentioning.

yes, the equalizer from foobar2000 is different from the normal equalizer found in winamp, itunes or windows media player. by adjusting the first slider it would give your C3 more deep bass as it's seriously lacking of bass.

if you're using it for 2.1, then better get C3. R501 is for those who plan to use 5.1 to get surround sound from their games or movies. C3 for music, R501 for games or movies.
