Well, it's been 4 months I learn gu zheng. Already upgrade from beginner to grade 1. Recently I learn 'flower finger'(花指), up/down bending (上/下滑音). But I still can't get the bending note accurate everytime, maybe I'm not used to the bending strength especially the down bending (left hand press down the string first then right hand pluck).
If you did not write the chinese word I dont even know what is flower finger. Hahah the funny thing is when Empire said glissando, I had no clue what he was talking about until he showed me.
Bending drill for you below laBella
练习一
12 23 35 56 61 play in 1/16 time (the one with double underline in chinese notation).
练习二
1bu = play note 1 and bend up
1bu, 2bu, 3bu, 5bu, 6bu in 1/8 time (the one with underline in chinese notation).
Lesson 1 and 2 should sound the same. The thing is 1bu =
12. So 2bd(bend down) =
21. To learn bend down use descending notes for lesson 1 and 2 above.
These lessons may not relevant for you because you should already know how each notes sound since you had been playing the guitar some time. Maybe your teacher did not explain what is the proper requirement. He just listen and say it is not right. I had the same problem too. When I read from a DIY book it is spelled out clearly 1bu =
12. That means when you hit 1 you should press it until it goes to note 2 in half the note duration. And when you reached note 2 stop pressing and hold it at the note 2 for the remaining half of the note duration.
In the case of bend down, lets say 1. You should press string 1 to get note 2 before plucking. Given practise you will know how hard to press. Then pluck the string and release pressure gradually until you are no longer pressing at all. This must be done in half note duration so that the note 1 will sound for the remaining half note duration.
Since you know music theory, I think you should know what I am talking about. But if you are still blur just ask question and I will try to rewrite the in from another angle.
If you remember I said the most important thing in getting a guzheng for beginners is long sustain sound. Bending is the reason for its importance. Most student without music background will get to this chapter on bending after a year thus the saying entry level guzheng can only last at most 2 years because entry level guzheng are not design to give so much attention to the nitty gritty of higher level lessons.
