come on..nobody are pro when they are born..even they wanna learn, there must be someone to teach them...
i admit i am still new and noob about dslr...so teach me about it??
*
hehe kesian. but i understand how aperture can become confusing

lower number e.g. F3.5 is "high" or "big", higher number e.g. F22 is "low" or "small"

actually i think the more accurate term for lower F number is "wide", and higher F number is "narrow"

Hey guys, I have a d40 and wanna learn how to i change focus points when i look through the lens. I wanna know how to change the red glowing lights to left, right or center. Thanks
*
1st u need to use the correct AF mode. hit the 'i' / 'zoom in' button, n scroll down to the 2d lowest icon on the right. hit OK and select either the middle (better for moving subjects) or bottom one (bttr for static objects for some reason tongue.gif).

now u can change the AF area by pressing right or left. u can see the red lights change as u press

Can any 1 introduce me some nice and cheap zoom lens for d3000?  quite confused after searching in google..and nikkor lens price is like wtf?
*
how cheap is cheap? google quite hard to find...i just look at yamiya.com.my. go to lenses n accessories > lenses > nikon or other brands. knock urself out smile.gif

nikkor is just branding my fren...got cheap nikkor rm400 only, also got expensive nikkor up to rm30,000, even more i think. look for sigma, tamron or tokina brands too...they make lenses which are cheaper than the nikkor equivalent (in terms of range n speed), but most of the time the quality, build n performance is lower

oh one more thing... since u're using D3000... u can only use lenses that has autofocus motor. which are more expensive than the equivalent lens without motor tongue.gif

noobie1,  i am using the 18-55mm VR lens which comes with the d3000 when i bought...

Erm.. actually i am very noob at lenses, i want a lens that can zoom far to take nice potrait pic...
If possible, around 1k lah... but over oso nvm.. =D
*
lol sorry i replied after u posted the above msg tongue.gif 1k can get 55-200mm lens as suggested. if over a bit can get 18-105mm...benefit of this lens is u dun need to switch between ur 18-55, but the range is less than the 55-200. yes it's slightly more expensive than the 55-200, but since if u get the 18-105 u wont need the 18-55 anymore so juz sell it tongue.gif

Thanks, searching it now....
but 1 thing ... lens like Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm f/1.8D  << means that it have only 1 focal length and cant zoom in or out right?
*
this one is good for portraits but remember, the cameras of this thread (d40 til d5000) all need AF-S lens. can use AF lens but need to manual focus, which for me is a PITA lah haha

oo... so AF-S and AF are 2 thing lah.. will take note from now.. tq =D

But the focal length factor... its based on lens? or based on the camera body 1 ah.. quite confused on this thing...

Tamron and Sigma lens quality acceptable ?
*
PITA = pain in the... guess urself lah ehehe

yeap AF-S and AF is different. n yes we can use the AF ones with manual focus...but obviously it will slow u down = u take less pictures = less good pictures. also it makes u worry too much about focusing, while u shud be thinking abt composition

oh ya...the crop factor is based on camera. our camera is 1.5.. so any lens u want u need to multiply with 1.5. dun worry abt this lah, we wont know the difference unless we use film or fullframe hehehe. juz that lets say some photography article recommend 18mm lens, meaning u need to get 12mm lens not 18mm lens

'acceptable' is different from person to person tongue.gif no need to listen to other ppl...juz try the lens... n see if it's acceptable 4 u or not. haha

as*.... right? =D

I just quite scare it will "rosak" fast mah... but after reading some article about lens... How do you differentiate about a lens for portrait?

Some of the article say wide angle lens will  make the picture stretched? and while some tele-lens make the picture become compressed abit... Confused.. sifu please explain =D
*
right hehe. about rosak im not so sure lah, but generally all lenses have very good built..juz take care of it.

normally for portrait is a lens with wide aperture.. maybe F2.8, 1.8 or 1.4, because these lens can give nice bokeh (the blur background thing), which usually makes for a good portrait shot. the range shouldn't be too near or far... 35mm, 50mm n 85mm are pretty good range. as u said, if too wide the face can become distorted, making the subject look fat. if too far, hard to get a clear view of ur subject in public places cuz ppl always crossing by hehe. also u cannot use in small rooms

the stretching thing is true. u can see some samples online, most lens review websites got show the distortion. this is only important for certain types of photo lah, e.g. got a lot of straight lines, because it will be obvious when it's distorted. for others, like landscape, etc, shud be ok. fyi all lens got distortion, some worse than the other, but can be fixed in photoshop

hahah it's a poison all of us kena biggrin.gif

the aperture written is the maximum (smaller number is bigger aperture)

maybe juz use kit lens 1st? its a pretty good lens already. maybe for portrait can get tamron 17-50 but it wont help much for landscape lah. if u want to take nice landscape pics, bttr spend money on travelling biggrin.gif

I see I see. But IMO, since you got 18-55mm, getting 18-105mm is gonna be a waste. Why not 55-200mm?  brows.gif
*
dun wan to change2 lens tongue.gif

QUOTE(noobie1 @ Mar 20 2010, 10:26 PM)
it's not a waste...u can buy 18-105 and sell off ur 18-55..tongue.gif

exactly heheh

QUOTE(zellleonhart @ Mar 20 2010, 10:48 PM)
i would suggest keeping your kitlens and get 55-200mm =D
cuz if you're like me u need the short MFD of your kit lens to shoot figures =D
*
i dun have any figures to shoot sad.gif

but then i decided to save up for KK trip later instead of new lens. after trip think again lol

QUOTE(jiayong @ Mar 21 2010, 12:36 PM)
hi to all dslr users here,

I am beginner, actually not yet own a dslr..
can anyone tell me wat model is for really beginner and user friendly?
and wat is the price? plan to get in this two weeks time, and for your opinions, should i get a 2nd hand 1?

Thx a millions
*
some people are okay with 2nd hand stuff, but some people really avoid it. if u dun mind... around rm2000 can get you a D80, rm1300 or so a D60, n for a D40 u can get less than rm1000. nice thing about 2nd hand is that u can sell it later for around the price u bought it when u decide u want a better/brand new camera tongue.gif provided u didnt wait too long la hehe

for me, the beginner dslrs (d3000, d5000) and intermediate ones (D90) not much difference in user friendliness. it's more about learning photography, not learning how to use cameras. anything newer than D40 is pretty much user friendly enough for a beginner. so if u can afford D90, get D90 tongue.gif

apart from the external conditions (scratches, dents, etc) and warranty, other stuff u shud note is the shutter count. need to ask the seller about this. it's something like the mileage for cars. if under 30k shud be alright i guess.

Hey, im still new in photography and like to ask

White Balance: How should I set it? Follow the lighting, or just leave it at auto?
*
i leave it in auto most of the time, n yes i shot JPEG only. later in PP i decide whether i warm the pic to be warm or cold. dats y i use auto, so i'll get the 'middle ground' hehe. if i set at warm, then suddenly wanna change to cold, not that nice dy unless i shoot raw

Hello all PROs n sifus out there, I juz bought my D5k, and I'm new to DSLR.... Can I know wat software should I use for editing the image taken? Coz I think the bundled Nikon View NX can't do much editing job like the Capture NX2, any suggestion or advise>? Thanks.... =)
