my astro installer didnt change my cables because they are concealed... the signal is at most 195 during the day and 205 at night.... should i call them to come and change the cable? will the change of cable help boost signal strength? ...today it rained and as usual service currently not available.

It's not going to completely get rid of rain fade regardless of the signal level. I would only call if they didn't give you the new dish.
They would have tested the cable and advised you during install if it wasn't suitable.
*
they didnt really test the cable, they just say its still in pretty good shape lol... there was no problem viewing it when it doesnt rain ... but i have a feeling they werent sure about it either.... because when they set the decoder for me, they didnt change the resolution output to 1080i lol...ut was automatically set to 576p... and he said here are the hd channels... then i showed them how to change the resolution and its so much sharper and detailed.... the installer eyes were practically stunned with what he saw lol...

Tried with the BlackMagic Intensity. SD channels no problem. HD channels show picture for 5 seconds then as expected, blank screen with "Copy Protection Failed" error.

*sigh* us Asians got no love when trying to get HTPC to play nice with satellite. US got AverMedia card which is HDCP compliant. Problem is said card only work with p24, p30 and i60 sources. No p25 and i50 support.

The only thing we have is the BlackMagic Intensity which does not support HDCP.

Looks like I either cancel my HD subscription or buy yet another new TV. I dun want HDMI switch, and the Dell is the largest screen in my lair.
*
wow so fast u got that card already? isnt it expensive? like 600 or more?... im quite surprised they didnt protect SD channels....then you can copy them lol

Well, it's RM1050. I got the Pro edition because the regular Intensity is discontinued.

I'm not surprised about the SD channels not being protected tho. Probably because it makes no difference if you plug in a VCR or DVD recorder into composite and record from there or if you use HDMI tongue.gif
*
Well a good tip is set the hdmi resolution to 576i and go record it.... will it record off the original digital stream? and will the file be an mpeg-2 video file? if so you can start to figure out how bad their SD bitrate transmission is lol...

but if you cancel your astro, you will burn rm1050? unless the store accepts returned goods ...

Will see how first. Since my intention, as I said before, it's not for recording (I already have VCR wired to composite for that), it's just that I want to output HD signal from decoder to biggest screen in my lair.

I think the card only act as video capture device, it doesn't read the streams directly to hard disk, it decompresses the stream to YUV 4:2:2 and PCM audio, and let your video capture program of choice do recompression.
*
yeah...actually thats what i've been wondering.... so its kinda pointless to record via hdmi since the output file will be some bigass file and u need to recompress again.... lol... because i forget that the decoder has the decoding properties of mpeg-2 and h264, not the tv.... so yea pointless to record via hdmi...

yup...the main event to wait now will be their recording feature enabled! lol... that will be recording directly streamed digital data~

As for your case, perhaps you might need to buy a new hdcp monitor?... or buy some hdcp stripper (probably cost much more than buying hdcp monitor)

No, monitor is HDCP compliant. Or else cannot even play DVDs tongue.gif (it's Windows 7, who like Vista thinks it owns all my DVDs). Problem is the BlackMagic Intensity itself has very simple HDCP control. If signal is copy protected, just drop video, dun care if system has HDCP monitor or tell windows to refuse recording.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to the recording feature too. However, anyone think they'll be like the US where they charge extra for you to use the feature?
*
lol... solution: hack ure blackmagic so that it supports hdcp ... maybe should start finding forums for that

anyway if it outputs YUV 4:2:2 and audio is pcm... its kinda pointless to add HDCP to it since you are not recording the original broadcasted stream... because at the end of the day... u still need to encode the video to reduce the size drastically... meh

damn...pay extra for recording?... i hope not....

Ok guys!

Astro service partner just came... and troubleshoot the component output problem.

He brought a new box, and tested it, no problem, the moment he does automatic update and halfway through installation, the component output got distorted again. Heh...guess wat, its not the hardware problem, its the software problem... so those who complain about component output problem on your box... you guys need to wait patiently from astro for auto update... bleh

As for why as soon as u plug in got auto update is due to the installer pressing some buttons on the from panel of the decoder... it will auto update instantly... or just let the decoder standby for sometime before auto update occurs.

Composite is ok, as long u turn off the 3D-Com option in your TV menu setting. Component out is still faulty so far. Another thing is those whose currently connect Astro to other display set in others room or hall via RF out, pls think twice b4 you register Byond packages, bcos it wont works with this Byond decoder.

Added on January 6, 2010, 1:54 pm
just tested at 1:50pm lah, component out still don't work.  top 1/2 section screen picture distorted.  my byond s/w just updated this morning at 12:20 am and running with system version Dec 23 2009.
*
hi,,, what is 3D-Com option? I'm not sure where to turn it off... using a panny here

But I'm still having the same problem because the newer decoder box also is giving the same problem...after update, it becomes distorted.... lol

note: i didnt change my decoder box, because since the new decoder also give the same prob after updating, the service fella suspect is the software causing the problem already...

Apparently.... the only version working is when the box is in mint condition, that is no software update at all... before 17 oct and 23rd dec software update...

So you're saying that HD in the US (Dish/DirectTV?) is of lower quality than Astro with 8Mbps of H.264? If this is the case, and if one transponder can handle about 30Mbps, that means at maximum four HD channels can be used per transponder.

I'm surprised that Astro is also transmitting the stereo channels since 5.1 can be folded down to stereo.

*
Yep... for directv the resolution broadcasted for one hd channel is 1440x1080i lol and the bitrate is around 6Mbps average using h264.... someone able to hack their encryption and recorded the digital video streams... amazing... i dont know how he did it, but i did see a few of his captures.... its sharp la...but pixellated... meh!

They should also include RTM HD in the list. At least one HD channel for people who don't subscribe to any of the packages laugh.gif
Looks about the same, but as I said before I'm not using HDMI at the moment.
*
RTM HD is on? I thought its off since olympics 2008 are done....

Dunno. My AVerMedia STB detect still got signal. I think it's HD because the STB show "HD Transmission not supported" when I try to tune in. Maybe they transmitting SD signal in H.264 and the STB has misleading error message tho.

Haven't use my PC's digital tuner card for a while already. Should check it out again, that one maybe can support.
*
let me scan it now with my usb tuner!!! =D

what frequency is it? if you can tell then its much easy for me...rather than scanning the whole spectrum =__=

We'll never know, anything can happen. Bolehland is full of uncertainties sweat.gif

For example, my mom bought me a Pontus DMB-T digital portable TV from China as a present last year. I told her it would be useless since Malaysia going for DVB-T, not DMB-T. Mana tau, suddenly TV3 doing DMB-T testing in Damansara area, and now RTM doing DMB-T testing Klang Valley-wide. Can watch RTM1 and RTM2 on the thing, plus TV3 if I'm in Damansara tongue.gif
*
oo i didnt scan for a while, what is the frequency for tv3?

aikz..nvm i just realise is dmb-t.... lol...wait till i get one ^^

Not very sure, the DMB-T receiver not helpful. Only show a progress bar and how many channels it finds. Plus, you must be in Kota Damansara area to receive (actually, I'm not very sure of exact coverage, last I checked Giant Kota Kemuning can receive, and KLCC in the convention center can receive). I'm currently in Kota Kemuning and can only find RTM1 and 2.
*
im living in kl...so it wont be a prob to me...and i want to listen fly fm live!!!! not via internet, if via dmb-t can record lol.......now i need to hunt for one of these...sigh.... where to get them in lowyat/digital mall? doh.gif

Idk leh, my mom brought this back from China. Maybe can look in eBay?

Methinks Malaysia will end up like Korea. Korea currently using both ATSC and DMB. Although according to what I read, gomen is thinking of using DMB-T for radio. The fact that DMB-T can use for TV as well is an added bonus to them.
*
yeah ebay only 1 seller.... singapore got hauppauge dmb-t usb stick.... but i think buying it now is not worth it... perhaps should wait for dmb-t dvb-t hybrid usb stick to come out first... too early to get one now...

Agreed. Plus, wikipedia sat they test for two years first. No guarantee that they're going to continue beyond 2012.

Btw, I made mistake earlier. I said Giant Kota Kemuning. I meant Giant Kota Damansara. Kota Kemuning no Giant tongue.gif
*
hahahaha yea kota damansara is quite near to sri pentas tv3.... i was wondering whoa...kota komuning also can get... not bad

1080i

if you set 720p or lower, you can easily spot resizing artifacts on the fonts... it will have slightly jagged edges and with the previous picture post and info from a forumer here, it has been confirmed all hd channels broadcasted are in 1080i, so yeah stick to the native resolution to get the sharpest picture =)

astro is still watchable
none of the "service is not available" msg popped out
and i'm still using the old dish
*
mine did.... just a little heavy rain where my old decoder and dish can stand, now it cant...i suspect it is due to the cables not changed...the installer coming to replace all the cable for me tmr....lets hope it solves the annoying problem sweat.gif
