Don't you think TM is too much by throttling YouTube connections ?
I mean , YouTube is an awesome site for sharing video's and it's gaining popularity since the day that site was launched.
Aren't we supposed to access these popular sites with ease ? Why cap it at 20KB/sec ? Even direct downloading their videos never pass 35KB/sec.
From what I see now they're like limiting our 'internet freedom' when they throttle the connection.
I'm not gonna mention RS or MU because when you normnally access those sites, you're probably doing *something*
But YouTube is TOTALLY legal to use.
How can they throttle our connection to YouTube ? The only problem we have now is we do not have enough proof to state that TM is actually throttling connections to YouTube.

If some forumers can gather some proofs, we can send them all to CFM , SKMM , MCMC etc.

Yes, TM is the main ISP in Malaysia, and that's the only not-so-but-kinda-big problem why our internet sucks comparing to some of our neighbouring country.

We have proof. Just open utube and it's throttled. Tmnut will discriminate against any application that uses lots of bandwidth even though it is not a p2p application.

Basically they want to maximize profit by minimizing peoples usage of bandwidth, even popular stuff like utube.... which to me is an unfair and illegal practice :/ But what can we do?
*
But what happen if they give lame excuses like "your PC is infected with virus" , "there's something wrong with our undersea connection, maybe eaten by sharks".
I need more... Solid proof that they can't just give those lame excuses.
I don't have the ability to get the proof so I come here and ask for help and cooperation. biggrin.gif

this all happen because malaysian people keep voting for the same gov for over 50 years... tmnet dont have money to buy extra bandwidth because of corruption and monopoly... all the money went to sumone pocket to go shopping in italy with his family...

1. Tell them your friend using P1, Celcom, Digi, Maxis, Jaring can stream youtube no problem and download from rapidshare at 100kBps. They will tell you all kinds of BS excuse.

2. Insist that they fix it for you as this is a TM Net streamyx problem. Refer to 1.

Correction.

1. Jaring can NO longer stream Youtube without interruption like it used to the last time. It's just as bad or worst than Streamyx during peak hours now.
They are now having more periodic outages than Streamyx which occurs at least ocne or twice weekly without giving any proper notice.

I'm not sure if this is the dirty work of TM sabotaging their competitors on their fixed lines or it's Jaring's own fault ever since they went and integrate their equipment into TM's own IPCore.
However, I'm too tired to call up and report this every week especially when I get home from work.

Malaysia government love to compare oil prices with other country but never internet and car prices.

The funny thing is that we got broadband first before Finland but now Finland has at least 22 mbps as average.

And the price per 1Mbps is USD$2.77 in Finland.
Which is RM9.50249 or RM9.50 when converted to the Malaysian Ringgit.

Yes, you noticed that too?

It's(the random downtimes/outages) getting very frequent now.
My place here happens like once a week on weekday nights around 7-8pm for a few hours.

It can't be any upgrades because what kind of upgrade happens every week?
TM is playing with their links. It was nothing like this the last time.

Whenever I manage to call Jaring up and asked whether there's any scheduled maintenance, they do not have any knowledge of it. This gives the impression that the network operator of the fixed line network (TM Wholesale/TMnet) is behind this.
Maybe they are unplugging their cables from time to time without telling Jaring.

I wish Jaring could provide a symmetrical 2mbps service like the SOHO plan they have in Kota Bahru, Kelantan bypassing TM's copper network.

Error 815 has something to do with the exchange side equipment.
Like I said, these downtimes are even not aware by Jaring when you call them up. TM can be playing this behind their back.

I was hoping also that they provide 2mbps FLite Wired ADSL. Why couldn't Jaring offer this when TM can uncap lines to over 4mbps?

I've since forgotten about Youtube nowadays since it's already the same like TM the last time.

My impression of Jaring Wired now is none other than a rebranded Streamyx.
Same old slow content streaming, high pings, heavy peak hours and overpriced. Contract is now over and they are charging RM79 now for 1mbps.

I recently upgraded to 2Mb due to persistent breakdown of the internet in the past 2 months. And this is what I get after the upgrade: 7.4 KB/sec. Well, at least the internet hasn't disconnected today and left me dangling for 2-6 days like past few weeks.

I'm not really free now, but I can provide you some info.

Direct download normally spins between 90KB/sec to 109KB/sec. (full speed for me)
YouTube spins between 176Kbps to 365Kbps (from what I see in the bandwidth graph)

1Mbps package, registered on 2007, Merdeka package.
Actual speed - 0.88Mbps, never pass that speed because port is capped dead on 1024Kbps.

You just check if other ppl everywhere in malaysia also slow in youtube while faster in other website like thestar.com.my or other local. Or you want this kinda beyond normal user capability proof http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2339772,00.asp, like maybe something as big as microsoft only can research on.

First it was Rapidshare. Now it's Youtube. I noticed the drag with YouTube in the couple days before Christmas, guess I'm not alone. My friend connection is even worse - he can't even open GameTracker anymore. Monopoly is very bad for the consumer. In some area in Sabah, there's even the "catuan tenaga" thing going on whereby there will be no electricity for an hour or two, pretty consistent I noticed prior 25 December.

<Tumpang bebenang>Anyhow I've tried out the "Pathload2" as linked by Diiimn, and I got something like the pasted below - FYI my package is the typical 1MB RM88 per month with modem. No modification whatsoever - install plug and use. </Habis Tumpang>

Click "Start New Measurement" to run Pathload2.

Network setting - everything normal, using Google's DNS.
OS - Win7 Build 7600
No changes were made.

Downstream Margin: 31
Upstream Margin: 20
Downstream Line Attenuation: 34
Upstream Line Attenuation: 12

My line is perfectly fine but only slow for YouTube.
*
Seems normal, yeah, I can see your locations only capable speed only at 1Mb by referring your line attenuation. Its true then youtube is being throttled by TM Net just what happen to rapidshare before... the best way only complain to CFM and MCMC.

For Linux only, if the test were done by using Linux but still youtube buffering, then its true TM Net limit bandwidth per user to youtube.

You mean cheapest within Malaysia right??  hmm.gif

Well if you compare with many other countries, the price we pay for 1 mb, we could have gotten a better broadband package elsewhere.

So in fact, if we compare against broadband on an international level, Malaysia broadband is quite expensive >->; probably on par with those African nations lulz  doh.gif

You mean cheapest within Malaysia right??  hmm.gif  well that is true... so yes get tmnut ...for now... since we are stuck with them as the best choice at the moment....

HOWEVER if you compare with many other countries, the price we pay for 1 mb, we could have gotten a better broadband package elsewhere. It is only when you do international comparison did you realise how bad our internet is.

So in fact, if we compare against broadband on an international level, Malaysia broadband is quite expensive >->; probably on par with those African nations lulz  doh.gif

I think africans are in fact having a better ISP than us. Thailand also has 10 mbps at rm 144(rounded up). This means its double the price but 10 times the speed compared to my "ONE" mbps "connection"

You know that which nameserver you use to resolve stuff has just about nothing to do with your download speed right?

I read one line. His broadband is up to 4mbps but they get 1.5mbps local and 1mbps international. Also, if you use too much bandwidth (not stated), the ISP has the right to cancel your contract.

Worse than in Malaysia.

Hey y'all, today I've encounterred numerous problems.
Either good or bad, it's both.

The good thing is, youtube streams smoothly for a 35mb video, wait it to buffer for just a minute.
But when I try direct downloading it via IDM, the speed is just like what TS said, doesn't get pass through 35kb/s. I find it rather odd.

Then I used a proxy site to access YT (hidemyass.com|kporxy.com)
Stream improved a bit and direct download is maxed out at 120kb/s.

As for now, miraculously, the ddl speed improved. It's excruciating. DX

Btw i've seen some relation to the dl servers too
IE: http://r4.hkg1.c.youtube.com
The one bolded is different one in a while. I think that affects too.

Yeah, but still Malaysia have only one ISP manage all other ISP by giving them wholesalescontract. If TM Net change single terms and conditions, it will effect other ISP as well, who knows...

I have my support for you fabianz03! Maybe you just collect daily streaming speed(for a week and different time) then screenshot and send to CFM and SKMM?

Another thing is that, 1 or 4Mbps users have the same streaming speed on Utube.

Hi there Chyan,

But YouTube is TOTALLY legal to use.
How can they throttle our connection to YouTube ? The only problem we have now is we do not have enough proof to state that TM is actually throttling connections to YouTube.
*
This is my testing to show what happens. I have checked on this many times over many days and the results are reproduceable.

Last test I did was today around 3.30pm.

Step #1
Two files are uploaded to a local web server.
First file is v10.zip.
Second file is v10.flv.
Both are 10MB in size. .
v10.zip is NOT a real zip file.
v10.flv is NOT a real video file.
Both are the exact same text file with different filenames.
Running MD5 check on each file produces the same checksum string indicating the contents of both files are exactly the same.

Note #1
Using a local server eliminates any international connection or congestion issues.
Using the same text file eliminates any filtering based on actual file contents such as zip or video file header identifiers.

Step #2
Using IE7 browser, each file is downloaded using http method (direct download).
Each file is downloaded one at a time.
No other downloads are running at the same time.
No download managers etc are running at the same time.
No proxy server is being used.
A 1Mbps Streamyx connection is used.
A 1Mbps Jaring connection is used for comparison.

Note #2
Using direct download eliminates any other factors that may influence the results.
Using a Jaring connection as comparison eliminates any problem with the local webserver.

Results
v10.zip download rate is approx 100KB/s using Streamyx.
v10.flv download rate is approx 25KB/s using Streamyx.
v10.zip download rate is approx 105KB/s using Jaring.
v10.flv download rate is approx 105KB/s using Jaring.

So its only with the Streamyx connection where there is a difference in the file download speeds. The downloading can be repeated again but the results are the same.

Step #3
v10.zip and v10.flv are downloaded using a FTP program using streamyx.

Note #3
Using FTP and getting normal speeds eliminates any connection or congestion problems with either ISP networks or the webserver hosting the files.

Result:
All FTP downloads are at approx 105-110KB/s irrespective of file extension.

Comparison testing:

Step #4
Video files (.flv) hosted on a local server are streamed using HTTP progressive download method using a embedded flash player. These video also do not play smoothly using the Streamyx connection due to the constant play/stop/buffering cycle. However, the videos play smootly using the Jaring connection.

Note #4
This eliminates that it is only YouTube video being throttled. The same slow down also affects other video streaming.

Conclusion:
Nothing to do with YouTube network or servers.
Nothing to do with Streamyx users side.
Nothing to do with local network connection or congestion.
Nothing to do with international network connection or congestion.
Nothing to do with DNS or routing etc.

So, TM is throttling http download and video streaming speeds for .flv file extension?

Remarks:

1. There are times where the v10.flv can be downloaded at full speed of approx 100KB/s like the v10.zip file. It is dificult to determine exactly when and under what conditions this can happen. At that time, YouTube video seems to stream smoothly as wel.
Perhaps at those times the throttling is removed or there is some sort of random throttling going on.

2. An additional quick test similar to listed above using a v10.swf file also downloads at approx 25KB/s. So .swf are also being throttled.

3. Using a proxy, the videos stream smootly, again pointing to throttling on TM side for direct Streamyx connections.

4. The low rate at which the throttling is set to is not acceptable as you can hardly watch videos with constant pauses for buffering every few seconds. At the very least, the rate of throttling has to be increased to maybe 40-50KB/s (not sure exactly) for smooth playback.

5. If TM is using file extension to do throttling, this is not a good method at all. It is not only YouTube that streams videos. There are regular websites that may have videos too to promote their own product and services. These will be affected too.

Can others comment on the above? Is there another explanation? What else apart from throttling can cause such a result?

First of all I would like to thank you for spending your time on this. I really appreciate your work.
Well, if we put throttling aside, the problem maybe bad routing. And currently the AAG cable is down.

Lastly I will keep your work for future refference.

As I tested on a local server, this is not international routing. Unless TM own local network has problems. But I don't think so. There is no problem when I test the route to the local server. Also, from the same server, one file can download without problem, but another cannot. So its not routing.

AAG does not come into play. I don't even think that the AAG link is being used for us as I don't see the tracerts have changed recently to show this.

Again, as I tested, this is not only YouTube. I just ran a quick similar test from an overseas server. Nothing to do with YouTube. The .zip file downloads as per normal speed, the .flv downloads at approx 25KB/s. This is http direct download. Not even streaming video. Just speed difference based on file extension.

I also tried a .swf and its approx 25KB/s. But a .mov downloads at normal speed. All this within a few minutes testing.

What else can you conclude if not file extension filtering / throttling?

I welcome anyone to try similar testing and post results as well. This sort of controlled testing takes time. I only posted to let you all know. I really hope some others can also test and post here.

Yes, I did not take screen shots. But you know, that also can be said to be false and it is still our word against theirs. When I spoke to customer service about YouTube being slow, I did mention to them that I can show them what is going on.

Thanks, from what I see YouTube is being mirrored locally now.
The latency are too low for international routing.

Which leads to a conclusion that chances that TM is throttling YouTube is high.

Evidence or not, we still have to report en mass to MCMC before they will take this matter seriously otherwise they will just dismiss it as typical difficult to please user problems.

This matter is really really serious.
Even the govt have their own YouTube channel. As well as our Prime Minister Dtk. Sri. Najib.
How can we, the people watch these videos when YouTube is throttled ?

Nope, I am not supporting either of them but for the sake of the supporters, they can lose votes !

I read one line. His broadband is up to 4mbps but they get 1.5mbps local and 1mbps international. Also, if you use too much bandwidth (not stated), the ISP has the right to cancel your contract.

Worse than in Malaysia.
*
Actually True offers up to 16mbps (for the equivalent of RM220/month). I've used it, it works as well as Streamyx or better.

Their 4mpbs package is RM90/month.

http://www.trueonline.com/en/package.aspx

Most of the complaints in Thailand are about TOT, the incumbent former government monopolist (that is, the equivalent of TM). Unlike in Malaysia, the market was opened up by a government more interested in long-term benefits than short-term payoff, and True showed up offering fixed-line service that blows TOT away.

Thanks, from what I see YouTube is being mirrored locally now.
The latency are too low for international routing.
*
No, that is not local mirror. It is probably Google's POP in India. Google / YouTube etc use a CDN. It is not always necessary you will get the same server when you ping youtube.

The YouTube website itself has no problems loading. It is the video streaming part. Why is it that the website loads ok, the searches returns results fast, all the thumbnail and the comments on the pages etc load ok. But the video streaming itself is slow?

I see but it's hard to tell if their service is better. Like ours we have fake broadband because bittorrent is throttled, youtube & similar throttled, rapidshare throttled (recently removed). In UK it's UP TO 8mbps but most users only get 2mbps.

*
Here's a suggestion.

Those of you who knows this forum administrators should request they setup a similar test as I did on the forum server. It will take up some bandwidth so maybe limit the testing to a couple of days or to a selected group of forum users.

Then different users can run the test at different times of the day and report the results. Extra info such as IP range, package type etc etc can also be provided. Ten we can all get a better idea of what is going on or see a pattern of this problem.

So, who knows the admins to make this request? Admins, if you are reading, what do you think about this?

First of all I would like to thank you for spending your time on this. I really appreciate your work.
Well, if we put throttling aside, the problem maybe bad routing. And currently the AAG cable is down.

Lastly I will keep your work for future refference.
*
Yeah, that are highly labeled on my old reply before, bad routing is the reason why you seeing high pings and not so good and no so stable speed and connectivity...

*
all those organizations you mentioned are bloody corrupt. they won't do a thing even if you send proof.

During peak time we cant determine correctly either it is throttle or not, because that time our internet and intranet are traffic jam.
