Just curious, bro Jchong.  Why not go for SB13+ instead?
*
After having listened to some ported vs sealed subs I think ported subs have better performance/value ratio for HT use. For HT use I think slam and impact are key to a fun HT experience. Yes, you can get that also with sealed subs but you'd need to spend more relatively. In terms of output I don't think the SB13 will outdo the PB13. To have higher output maybe the SB16 will do, but the price for that is shocking.gif

The other elite uncle said that it is better than a RM15K 13" sealed sub that is available locally for music and even movie.

Was he referring to F113?

Glad to know your poison is expanding. Good for biz.

I hv only heard one sub that I think can match the PB13U. I wish I can test one out for music.

Which one is that?

Submersive. It can match in output but the tactile feel might be different.

PB13U setup correctly, IMHO running in sealed mode shd get u close to the Submersive. The oppposing driver design reduces distortion even more so in my opinion and reduces the need for further isolation.

But then as mpwy said, its a different price range. I really also agree that at the PB13 price, its really difficult to beat. I wonder if running 2 in sealed mode would be even better.
*
Yeah, I thought you were referring to the Submersive smile.gif Based on my brief listening of it and the PB13, the feel is different. However, I've come to learn that placement and room interaction is very important and can greatly affect how a sub sounds.

From all accounts PB13 in sealed mode loses a lot of output and won't be close to the Submersive. Of course having 2 would be a diff story, not only in terms of output but also bass smoothing.

Hey, anybody here used a PB13 with a Auralex Gramma pad before?

I find placement and room setting is very important for a sub to perform well.
*
Very true. I've listened to same sub in diff rooms and the sound can be quite different. Sometimes I wonder "Eh same sub ah? Why sound so different here?". Must be the placement and setting up.

Only thing with something like the PB13, because it's so big the placement options are more limited (unless you have a big room).

I am using Gramma for my PB13-Ultra. It helps to minimize vibration. This makes the bass a bit tighter with better definition.
*
Great. I'll be experimenting with the Gramma this weekend. Not looking forwarding to lifting that PB13 and moving it around smile.gif But I'll be looking forward to the results!

You mean in your room not many choices for sub placement?

Dual sub tryout...

Experimented with dual sub setup today. I had previously run Audyssey with the PB13, but I just wanted to do a quick and easy dual sub experiment so I used a Y-splitter and hooked up the F15 as well. Unfortunately I don't have a SPL meter now so both subs are not level matched. And the F15 has also not been EQ'd by Audyssey (but the PB13 is).

First impression is there's a lot more bass (too much actually). Naturally since adding a sub would give you 3-6 dB boost. So then I turned down the sub trim by -4 dB. Ah much better now - a more balanced level. My first observation is that the bass is more evenly spread through the room. Previously with the single PB13, there was less bass to the left of the center and more bass to the right. This is after running Audyssey. So bass distribution was uneven. With 2 subs the distribution was better, still not exactly even throughout but better.

I also noticed more mid bass impact - more of that 'hit you in the chest' feeling. Using the skidoosh scene in KFP the pressure waves are more felt, more enveloping (compared to single PB13). So preliminary impression is that 2 subs are an improvement. thumbup.gif

Yeah for multisubs there are some who suggest asymmetric placement.

In any case it's a fun experiment. 4 subs should be excellent.

Yours is the only dedicated sub showcase at KLIAV right?

Let's hope I can make it this year. Missed it for a few years already.

do PB12-NSD have it own sound volume?

Most subs have their own volume control, including the PB12-NSD.

I doubt it can be compare to 15" HSU ULS-15.

Anyway, I had found out why my sub is bottoming. Turning out I run the sub 10db too hot. It seems that audyssey and AVR test tone using SPL meter show correct level but when using REW graph, it's running too hot. Maybe the test tone emit the tone somewhere near the dip which cause this problem.
*
pierreye, can u post the REW graph for your sub's raw freq response (meaning no Audyssey or EQ on). Best if you can bypass AVR completely and hook up the REW to your ED.

I did some charts for my sub (in 3 diff positions in the room):

user posted image

None are ideal and show a dip in the mid-bass region. Still have to experiment with some more placing options.

Here's the chart after using REW to tune in the sub with main speaker. Audyssey is off and no EQ. Definitely need an EQ for the sub to dial in the response.

JChong, can you redo the graph at standard 75db? This is the normal listening level and will reflect the actual scenario. Also note that the higher db you go, the waterfall chart will show RT60 increase due to more energy reflected in the room.

Thanks for the charts. I'll try to redo the graph at 75 dB later this weekend.
