1080p requires a huge bandwidth compared to 1080i/720p , think of an economist's point of view instead of an engineer's point of view - it would be pretty expensive to get the cables , equipment and other stuff. Its just a matter of time , in the world currently the preferred broadcast is 720p for sports and 1080i for other shows and stuff

The good news is that SPORTS channel is finally getting progressive scan. Meaning that motion should rapid and it should be pretty good ;P
*
How sure are you sports would be in 720p ? I have a feeling it would be 1080i as well... because 720p requires a lot of bandwidth... and you know astro la...very stingy when it comes to bandwidth... though not to worry my tv will flip if it changes resolution....so i can tell what resolution will that channel be broadcasting =P

yes, component can support analog HD up to 1080p, ask your lecturer surf the internet more whistling.gif
*
oops lol, ok will inform my lecturer about that hahaha... nice read there you've got... but anyhow if u were to use component... will the quality be worst than using hdmi since it has became analog? not to mention 3 cables vs 1 hdmi..... the price will be higher than for a hdmi

Dude , you gotta read up first

720p/1080i = same bandwidth

You can read more about it http://www.highdefinitionblog.com/?page_id=88
Its only 1080p that requires huge amount of bandwidth , thats out of the question for now. It would be stupid if ASTRO broadcasts sports @ 1080i - cause its going to be bit blur

Secondly , every TV is able to tell its broadcasting mode and secondly the setup box can determine it. You should read up on HDMI v1.3 specifications (which I believe the protocol ASTRO would be using). The reason why they want HD broadcasts via HDMI is because of HDCP
*
Aikz... i always feel that 720p would require more bandwidth to maintain the same quality compared to 1080i.... technically 720p has a higher resolution (compared to 1080i or 540p) hence the need of extra bandwidth for 180p? lol

As for this:

http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/global/conte...assetId=3720002

Don't get confused please. 1080p is possible through internet streaming and also background downloading when you standby.

You select a title and it will download to your box. Thus it is called ON DEMAND. See it says "The hottest titles are now available in 1080p on DIRECTV on DEMAND. Experience them like never before. "

It is unlike AOD as AOD use multiple channel to broadcast multiple episode at multiple time. In other word when you want to see an episode, you don't have to wait long.

Direct TV 1080p is not a real time live broadcast.
*
Oh, always thought it was live broadcast, thanks for clarifying that =)...

As for AOD, I have to say I don't really enjoy this multiple channel broadcast. Its very bandwidth consuming... and wth... name it AOD, its not even on demand to begin with, still need to wait a while to watch the ep i want lol...

if u compare to now on the SD channels, HBO is not delayed 1 hour...but maybe at most 5 minutes... same goes to NGC ...not too sure about History. As for sports, when the live matches are by ESPN it will be delayed at most 5 minutes too (why??? to cut off those "illegal" advertisements...eg liquor ciragettes etc) .. sometimes u can see on the soccer matches, suddenly got tiger banner near the score board and suddenly got replaced my maxis or astro's own logo.... those r the stupid things they do lol

My best bet is NGC and HBO might... MIGHT be also following the SD channels time, which is at most 5 minutes delay. You can check the schedule with Starhub, thats what i've always do.... yea it will list the same timing as starhub for HBO and NGC (checked before)... but actually when it really shows, its 4-5 mins late lol.

Which mean if raw video recorded from the recorder, it will show .ts files? hmm.gif

not entirely true, perhaps it will be encrypted due to DRM... just like the TiVo's box, the recorded files are .tivo ... wondering what will the extensions be... perhaps they might even encrypt the hdd to avoid us from retrieving the media

Guys you're jumping ahead of yourself. The b.yond box isn't a DVR. It is s ingle tuner with no hard disk.
They are doing an update later to enable the usb port to take a hard disk to act as the dvr.
*
Yess I'm aware of that, just that I cant keep my itchy hands off the DVR function once it is available.... I want to record out the HD and SD streams and analyze on their quality broadcast... but of course would need to bypass their DRM ... wouldnt it be nice if they just scrape that crap off? lol

yes 720p is well suited for live events, like live concerts sports etc, but im also sure astro would be at most using 1080i for all their current hd channels, it has been clearly answered in the faq's

If my HDTV could de-interlace properly, I would be gladly be using 1080i to watch movies & tv shows.

I have yet to see how Astro Byond is going to handle live events at 1080i but should the difference be minimal, I probably won't care much (also, I hate sports, so I'm less concern about it).

I'm just trying to get some fact straight about the whole 720p vs 1080i.
*
How could you tell if the hdtv couldnt deinterlace properly?

Easy to spot. Just watch at close range for the images to distort. The effect should look like this:

But anyway guys, dont be too happy just yet... some channels in eu that initially broadcast at high bitrate now has dropped to half of the initial broadcast ... and the picture is really flat.... we should start complaining once they do that.... else they would quietly reduce the bitrate and bam we are stuck with "HD" lol

Looks Like it, from what I know here nobody has HD  icon_rolleyes.gif  all awaiting installation.
The other channels on HD is everyone's guess. The next target wld be Dynasty,Metro,News ,Fun & Variety packages Astro wld ensure all packages are subsribed ! vmad.gif

Wikipedia has this

Viewers will only get HD channels for packages that they have already suscribed for. For an example, if you do not currently have the sports package, then you will not be given the sports HD channels. For starters, Astro B.yond offers 5 new channels in HD mainly in 1080i:

Astro Supersport HD - Channel 831
ESPN HD - Channel 832 (Launches 1 January)
HBO HD - Channel 431
National Geographic Channel HD - Channel 573
History HD - Channel 575
Astro plans to include more channels by next year. Some channels that could be added are :

Disney HD
Cinemax HD
CNN HD
Cartoon Network HD
MTV HD

w00t nice pics... but yeah they follow many broadcasters that wants to broadcast in SD as well, so its very convenient for them to just crop it for SD channels... I'm sure you guys have seen ABC and CW, same idea

to be honest it will be really nice to have TVB HDJADE on astro, but don't go on having astro on demand HD....that will be very bandwidth wasting... i've just recently watch Born Rich all in HD, not 1080i, but 720p...its really nice indeed, but somehow too detail until those background setting looked fake enough and the views are easily seen to be posters, lol
