Haha, looks like you've reeled in your nephew into flashlights! Nice DIY. I see there's a transistor? How would it know to terminate at 4.2v ar?

EDIT: oops, the handphone charger meant for 3.7v (4.2v) right.. ok.. blush.gif

Haha, don't expect someone actually interested, attached is the simple drawing.

I used the 7805 regulator , the output is always fixed at 5V (regulated), and it can take input from range of 6-10V++, so most HP charger should be in this range. If it rated 5V output, then it can be used, because usually their unloaded voltage is 5.5V and above.

Then from the 5V, I uses a diode 1N4001 to further reduce the voltage to about 4.2-4.3V. guys, no fix here (its depends on various condition), so I recommend to use a protected li-co, unless you do your know timer and DMM to check lar.

I tried to use a zener to limit to 4.3V, but result not good, will try improve if have time.

Actually there is an IC LTC4054 to charge liOn battery, but in low volume its priced at RM15++, but my idea is to minimized the cost. Or you can use those universal cellphone battery charger, they have the circuit inside, quite good. But I can get it around RM10, and need more modification.

I tested, it will charge real slow to 4.2V, it means the charger no need to hold at 4.2V and detects the current drop like those intelligent rapid charger for termination.
Specs say if you slow charge to 4.2V, its full when it reach 4.2
It may go slightly higher than 4.2, but it should be ok, and the protected lion should cut if its triggered.

Hey thanks for the info and specs! thumbup.gif

It looks like different battery (with different internal resistance) might be terminated at different voltages from your explanation. Perhaps your nephew should use the same type of batteries for this charger since it is terminating at 4.2v safely?

EDIT: If reduce to ~ 4.15v also still better i think hmm.gif

haha, i re-attached the drawing, 1st 1 failed but i didn't notice.

Yeah, it could mod to charge up to 4.15V, but it won't full charge then.

Where's my car when I need it...now have to wait 2 days....darn it.
Thanks Mr Susuman!

Ps: Should be an XP-G in it. Either that or the XP-E R2. Dealextreme isn't really noted for it's consistency. I remember when I ordered from you it was stated XP-G, now suddenly XP-E. I don't think XP-E's have r4's.

Mini US Shopping Spree quick update....28 March 2010

old newspaper: all items arrived !
Chieftat : all items arrived !
damonlbs : all items arrived !
LightJunk : all items arrived ! *
polkiuj : all items arrived !
jwyj : all items arrived ! *
GW2U : all items arrived !
Proclaimer : all items arrived !
MiniMoke2927 : all items arrived !
eow1973 : items finally shipped out by UPS and expected arrival date on 30th March 2010 thumbup.gif

* based on the tracking info as my agent has not updated me on the actual items received.

All items is scheduled to be ship out to us on 3rd April [ Saturday in KL, Friday in Woodstock US ] . Why 3rd April? Cos it's every Friday is his off day and that's the only day he could drive to post office and get it deliver to us....

Shipping Method : USPS Express Mail.

Why Express Mail ?
- safer cos it has tracking no. until it reach my doorstep....
- shipping cost is about the same with Priority Mail and i guess it was faster too.... laugh.gif

Here's some real example of shipping cost of USPS Priority vs Express Mail....[ my wife just bought her Coach's handbags & wrislets again sweat.gif doh.gif rclxub.gif moneyflies.gif ]

Parcel Value : USD 700
Weight : 10.2lb / 4.6kg

Shipping using Priority Mail with Insurance = USD 75 + USD 9.5 [ Insurance ] = USD 84.5

Shipping using Express Mail with Insurance = USD 82.5 + USD 3.55 [ Insurance ] = USD 86.05

So the differences is only USD 1.55, so i guess it's definitely more advisable to use Express Mail right? biggrin.gif If there's any objection, please let me know ya icon_rolleyes.gif

Oh, XP-G changed to XP-E???? Huh shakehead.gif
I just checked, the original invoice says "SKYRAY S-R5 Cree XPG-R4 5-Mode 320-Lumen Memory LED Flashlight (1*18650/2*16340)"

XPG-R4, if they shipped the XPE, then can claim them, problem now is I don't know how to differentiate XPE and XPG?? (that is why they had a backed order?)
The drop-in has a print ( Super Bright R5) on it , though. laugh.gif

Anyway, the light is brighter than the twin sister LF Seraph 3 Mode 4.2V (single cell).
Tail cap tone is slightly brighter than the body, its ok if you are surefire fans (most surefire head/body/tail has different tone) like me.

Head and tail cap is compatible with the LF, but SS Bezel are not 100%.
Reflector is smooth and nice, beam seems very good too, smooth hot spot.

QUickly come and claim your new baby!! tongue.gif

Hi susuman, there's a way to tell. For XPG, the die in the dome is larger, almost leaving no space inside the dome. But for XPE, the die is smaller and there's some space you can see in the dome. Compare it with your Preon XPG and Mini 123 neutral white, XPE Q3.
