Sifu Sifu sekalian,
i've been a silent reader and saw that the lx3 was highly recommended, but somehow i didn't notice there's someone mentioned about the nikon coolpix model. So here i am having dilemma which cam is better. rclxub.gif
p/s : I did tried out the LX3, and damn it was good, but didn't try for the nikon.
Nikon : P100 and P90 (RM1499) and L110(RM898) price display
Lumix : LX3 (RM1599) included 6gb card.
*
nikon makes good DSLRs but sadly their compacts doesn't shine as much sad.gif

P100, P90 and L110 are all superzoom models, shudn't be compared to LX3. the lumix FZ35 would serve as a better alternative if u want the huge zoom range

as long as it produce good image, i don mind if it able to zoom either.
scene, potrait would be my primary selection. wink.gif
Guess that LX3 still is the overall king isn't it? brows.gif

actually zooming from far can create pretty nice portraits smile.gif

yes LX3 still overall king haha

Some people ask me to go for Canon 550D. Got HD video capabilities there. Any feedback on this?
*
good is good, but if u wanna make good videos then prime lens would be very beneficial. need to stretch a bit ur 3k budget to get a 550D + 18-55 + 50mm f.18

Thanks DJFoo000 replied..

I have a question, LX3 have 1cm Macro mode, while Canon SX200 have 0-2cm Super Macro mode (see here). I wonder what's the meaning of 0-2cm?

Thanks
*
sometimes these 'feature' names are quite misleading/confusing. normally macro mode only lets the lens to focus nearer (1cm for lx3) when it's on autofocus. manual focus also can focus at 1cm without a 'macro setting'. not sure what canon mean by 0-2cm though... how can focus at 0cm +_+ maybe u can try at a shop see how close the canon can focus?

of course this is not that important lah. if i set to focus at 1cm on my LX3 and shoot my notebook screen, can almost see individual RGB pixels tongue.gif not useful, but fun i guess? hehe

QUOTE(chelseafanz @ May 10 2010, 02:29 PM)
yup...i already try google and now the major dilemma are to buy either Tamron AF 18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 XR Di II or Sigma AF 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC or Sigma AF 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC OS. Cause with OS, it need more around rm600. Don't know is it worth to pay extra rm600 for the optical stabilization or not. Will it give big difference?
*
i recommend the sigma 18-200 OS. it feels solid to me, and OS helps. at 200mm indoors also quite hard to take photo with OS on, i cant imagine how if no OS tongue.gif

Hey guys, need help here...

Type of camera/lens/accesories : Digital CAMERA
Budget : ~RM 1.5k
Your Location : JB
Preferable brand : anything which is good
Type of photography u want to do : protrait, landscape (to capture all the nice shots! for travelling purpose)
Any specific models in mind? : LX3 or S90 (2nd hand) or any other recommendations?
Any specific features u want? : I've already have a old canon A70 and A550, wanted to invest a better point & shoot camera.
-love neck strap, as i think it's more convenient when i want to shoot, fast enough to capture the shots i want, image when upload to computer/ after developed is same with the lcd on camera, EASY to use as i'm a newbie in photography world, just know how to snap with Auto mode!

thanks dear sifus for ur advices!  notworthy.gif
*
LX3 lcd is a bit too bright and saturated. u'll notice ur pics are a bit underexposed after u transfer to ur computer sad.gif but can adjust laa. dunno how the screen compares to S90 though. LX3 comes with a pretty nice neckstrap too.

QUOTE(Lynixx @ May 11 2010, 03:22 PM)

wk1168, good explanation but consider his budget lar..

krayden, on top of fast autofocus, another factor is the camera+lens has to be fast enough to capture the kids' movement. this means you need to be using a fast shutter speed. there are two ways to achieve this:

1) u need a DSLR that can do well at high ISO, like 1600, 3200 or 6400. but DSLRs generally do this better compared to compacts, even cheap ones

2) u need a fast lens. a "fast" lens would be those rated with F1.4 to F2.8, the lower the number, the faster it is. but fast lenses that can zoom can be very expensive (the 70-200 f2.8 quoted by wk1168 is around rm7k). fast lenses that cannot zoom (called prime lenses) are cheaper.

for ur budget, i'd recommend Nikon D3000 with 35mm F1.8G lens, ~2.6k (for this price u'll get a general-purpose 18-55mm lens too, but it's not helpful to capture fast movements). ISO performance isn't much (still better than compacts) but the fast F1.8 lens would let u capture movement better. if you could increase ur budget a bit, go for Nikon D90 with 50mm F1.8D, ~rm2.9k. the D90 has better ISO performance. both 35mm and 50mm lenses are prime lenses. also, dont get the D3000 with 50mm f1.8D, it won't autofocus

not much difference.. d40x got more megapixels and faster fps but the flash sync is slower.

ooh okay, in that case D90 suits ur budget. 3k can buy d90 body n 50mm f1.8. 50D body need to top up a bit i think, not sure if got price cut or not. can consider canon 550D too, + 50mm f1.8 also still under 3k

Hi all,

I think im going to get flamed here but what the heck i'll ask here first laugh.gif

what's the difference between DLSR and a normal digital camera? (Open for fire lolz)

Also im trying to get my hands on a first camera too.

Type of camera/lens/accesories : Beginner so its either a entry level DSLR
                                                or a digital camera.
Budget : Depends on the camera is DLSR i guess the min is around 2k
right? I'll put it at RM2k Max
Your Location : S/Alam
Preferable brand : Nikon D3000 (it seems like a entry level DSLR)
Type of photography u want to do : all purpose (indoor, outdoor, travel),
                                                    night shots
Any specific models in mind? : None
Any specific features u want? : Videos if possible

In advance I'd like to apologise if this is a noob question and secondly I'd like to thank in advance for any recommendations ^^.
*
yes u will get flamed for asking that. go search around this forum, can easily get an answer.

QUOTE(louis6 @ May 16 2010, 11:24 PM)

I think this is a good read for people who looking to their 1st buy dslr...

- Low-end consumer. The winner here would have to be the Canon T2i. This is the category where Nikon seems to have lost all reason. They've simply taken a D40x and iterated almost nothing meaningful on it for two more generations (D60, D3000). Nikon's product feels outdated, out-of-place, underspecified, and unremarkable compared to the competition. This is a trend that has been continuing for some time. The T1i started to move the bar significantly in Canon's direction; the T2i put some real space between the Canon and Nikon products.
- Middle consumer. Nikon wins in a default. Canon doesn't have a model between the T2i and 50D, Nikon has a model between the D3000 and D90. But Nikon's D5000 is a bit idiosyncratic. It tries a little too hard to be different than both the D3000 and the D90, creating a bit of buying confusion in the lineup.
- High consumer. A tough call. There are things to like on both the 50D and D90, but both are a little long in the tooth and need updating. Based upon sales figures and customer satisfaction, I'd have to guess that the D90 won the race up to this point. Still, a close race that will be renewed shortly.

... and these are his opinion.
*
actually i agree. D40x, D60 and D3000 are very similar. hopefully the D3000 replacement will at least come with CMOS sensor. or just phase out the D3000 n price the D5000 at ~1.7k-2k instead. then introduce something to fill the ~2.5k gap.

im under the impression that the canon 50D is a middle consumer camera. most of the specs are slightly above D90, but hard to beat D90's price.

high-end consumer, it's pretty hard to beat the value of the 5D mk2.

im back, after a while research..and comparing and hitting..i think..im going for canon eos 1000d. since im mainly focus on DOF based, macro, potrait and not really to landscape + building, i think this the best.

I hold already the 1000d..so light, and easy to use too..

BTW, final question..

Nikon D3000 not in my list anymore but if anyone have any thought between sony a290(or 390,they are the same anyways) and eos 1000d, based on my need here :
-DOF based
-macro
-potrait
-outdoor (but not really far one, maybe like watching people play table tennis, not soccer)
-low light situation (attic area,ur own room at 7.30 pm)
-night

-not landscape and buildings

i need the live view for ease of use and i like to use many many angles..

which has more value for my bucks? budget still <RM2000
*
budget rm2k, then 1000D with 50mm f1.8 only. covers ur DOF, portrait, low light and night dy smile.gif for macro, get raynox 250 later (i dun think can fit in ur budget now). for table tennis, or any sports for that matter, need more expensive lenses to avoid blur pics

oh ya...forgot to ask, for future upgrade, what 3rd party lense will compactible with eos1000d? i noe tamron..and if like older lense( as example, the kit lense 1000d) can use ar with another canon eos type without losing any of it functions? like..eos 500d etc..

and, do i need hood and uv filter ? i didnt think i need it but if it will boost the contrast etc, is it alright? any big significance with kit lens?
*
uv filter doesnt boost contrast...it's only meant to protect ur lens from scratches. u need to buy a good one, cuz cheapo uv filter will actually degrade ur pics. so if u dun want to buy expensive ones, better dun buy at all. not sure about hoods

for canon system is pretty easy. u can use any ef-s lens smile.gif for 3rd party ones like tamron, sigma etc, u juz have to make sure the lens is a canon mount, not nikon or sony etc
