What is the difference in benefits between a narrow-stance push-up and a wide-stance push-up?

I'm not sure what's the term used for the two styles of push-ups,
but the narrow-stance is the one where your elbows are facing backwards.
While for the wide-stance, the elbows are facing outwards, which is I guess is the more common method.

What muscle group does the two different styles work more, and which is the more effective in chest muscle training?

I'm trying to increase my chest muscle size, and especially the inner chest muscles (where the left and right chest muscles meet in the middle).

Help is much appreciated.

HEH??????
Using energy doesn't cause increase in chest muscles. If that's the case, office workers would have chests the size of Mount K1

Narrow stances gives more emphasis on the triceps and reduces the amount of load on your shoulders. It's also consider "safer" according to industry standards and preferred compared to the wide grip

Wider = chest activation
Narrower = triceps activation.

Added on November 12, 2009, 11:39 pmbut then I only do push ups at the end of my chest day training, just to squeeze the final drops of energy out of my chest.

For me, what I do is, since energy levels are at its highest before you do anything, so I take that opportunity to do the heavier lifts first during chest day ie incline press etc, then after the training, to further destroy the chest I'd do some minor work, like push ups.

there is no damn thing as "outer pecs" or 'inner pecs' since the same fibers at the outside are the same ones on the inside. They run HORIZONTALLY. cry.gif

it's like this.....narrow push up will work inner chest more, you'll feel it.
BUT because your chest consist of 1 piece of muscle. the whole chest will be trained....
same like......there's no spot reduction. u can't exercise just to lose fat on ur butt cause it simply cannot happen >.<

Finally! The truth! I really don't understand why people keep on insisting that there is an inner chest etc.

If you're not the pro one, then why are you giving advice. Advice is supposed to be given from someone who KNOWS their stuff.

When you're sick, do you ask your friend who just 'googles' stuff or do you go see a professional doctor?

When you need to get your taxes done, do you 'google' and find out how to do it or do you go to a professional accountant?

What if the information you got over the internet was a mistake?

I may have a fair amount of knowledge about weight training itself, but if anyone were to ask me for advice on Olympic Lifting, I would probably say 'I am not sure' and check with Pizzaboy or my other weightlifting friend.

If someone asks me on nutrition, chances are I would forward the question to someone like ken86 instead because he knows his stuff.

Now why do I trust them? Because they have been there, done that, and have had way more experience than I do.

Information you get on the internet is not always right, so if you don't know, then don't give advice. At the very least say "I think wide grip pushups does XYZ" and admit that you're not knowledgeable.
