Hi...

I'm new to photography and all. Lucky to have found and bought a a300 few months back.
But now I finally think it's time to get an all ranged lens.
Was hoping you guys can recommend me something that covers from 18mm to 200~300mm?

I've been reading on SAL18250, and other equivalents. But everywhere I go seems to have mixed reviews, both positive and negative. The more I read, the more undecided I got.
Instead, I was "almost" determined to get the Tamron 18-270 Di Aspherical something-something-something (Too long of a name), until I found out that it doesn't fit A mounts. Lol.

So I'm kinda hoping anyone here has hands on experience and can fill me in?

Thanks in advance!

hi blur, congrat on getting A330 and welcome to the orange world.

may i know what is your purpose of getting an all range lens? smile.gif i used to think like that too, one lens, cover all. but didnt i realise that, a lot of shoot are done with dedicate lenses. there are a lot of lens to consider.

to cut it short, SAL18250 F3.5:6.3 is the lens u are looking for, RM1999 from sonystyle, but can get a little cheaper on the street. and since u are new to photography, i would give u an advise, dont get desperate to shoot at night, the 18250 F6.3 is very 'dark'. if possible, i advise u to do a little research on flash too. (or skip everything and mark my word, grab F58, no turning back)

ier, all ur fault la....i at the shop look look for 16-105 then suddenly duno y play the a550 aiseh.......yaa now i shooting at iso1600 and f4 indoors and its almost like iso200 on the a350 ehahehae.....shiok le....
somehow the interface very messy la...(in liveview)

dont wanna get the 55-200, I sold it off last time cause I didnt utilise it..was hoping for a wide + slightly range(16-105) was good....I am hoping if sony or sigma create something like 13-140 would be nice range(not so greedy on the wide and not so greedy on the zoom)

err now for new lens would have to wait till next year angpau lo.....my budget blow kau kau........anyway once i get to shoot something i post here...one thing good is the dro+5 (no chance to try the hdr yet, hope it can turn out like photoshop'ed combine hdr quality
*
@.@ my fault? cry.gif cry.gif cry.gif sorrrrryyyyyyyy.... but it was good poison bah... tongue.gif

well, 55200, bring to sepang is ngam ngam to shoot girls and everything else. 55 can shoot 3 girls together. and it has better bokeh then any 70mm to 105mm at F5.6.

13-140 design is too complicated. because anything bigger then 18mm is already troublesome to design. so we must be thankful that sony able to come out 2 16mm-??? zoom lens, both are superior lens.

A550 worrrrrrrrrrr.... ISO1600 worrrrrrrrrrrrr.... the speed gain is soooo much, easy easy shot nia at low light without flash, summore the processing, made the photo very bright and sharp one.

Wow! Thanks for the swift reply IeR and laszlo. Edit: and ahchew. Lol. Didn't even see your reply yet when posting this.

It's a300 by the way, not a a330. Xp

I actually bought a F58AM not long ago. tongue.gif And a 50F18 recently.

Then using the 50mm I realized it's too much of a zoom for me. And I want to get something with better f rating. The 1870 just doesn't satisfy anymore.

So "basically", I'm just looking for one more lens to fill the gap the 50mm can't. With better aperture rating.

Although, after reading more, I'm also contemplating to get a 17-50 and a 50-200 instead now. Lol. Seems like both ways will achieve what I want and with "almost" similar cost. But going 2 lens allows me to have better aperture at the lower mm range.

Sigh...
Back to Windows Calculator and more browsing. Lol...

Do advise... Thanks!

yup, u are on the right track, on other hand instead of 55200, u may wan to reconsider beercan for it's F4 constant smile.gif

since u got the 50 F1.8, u should know how aperture helps in low light shooting, and 1750 is the right way, else, like achew said, 16-35 F2.8(although 35 is limited)

*edit: doubleposted.

wa lau, i still dont know to be happy with my purchase or cry..the a550 dual colour design is not easy to hide and if my gf/future wife knows I sure die la since we were suppose to save money for wedding.......

anyway i tried some sample test shot to tweak a nice creative setting, does it looks funny? i notice also don't trust liveview 100% i think the lcd got some tuning problem, when i switch to vivid creative setting everything look so saturated like +10 everything....but when review on computer, looks ok..

below shot (to try tweaking out the nice vivid colour)
Dro(lv3) vivid=contrast+1/saturation+1/sharpness+3
F4 1/40 Iso1600(auto) No Flash Fire

shoot one with DRO off , DRO auto, and DRO level3 / 5.... choose the one u like smile.gif not everyone like the heavy dro

Porkchop: try find the glass type screen protector, it protects really well, wont get scratch like hard plastic, and its 100% see throught, and best of all, soft wipe can remove oil. summore it's harder to crack too

ier, how did u like the DRO on this?? it's Level 3

I cannot tahan DRO level 5...i look at it somehow the colour too vibrant make me feel pening...........DRO off also cannot (probably cause in my A350 I am used to DRO+)  DRO Auto - normally sticks to level 1, so kinda not so nice

most probably i will stick to DRO 3 or 2
*
sigh, i type a long reply then my IE crashed. forgotten what i type.

the photo is nice, the vividness looks good on my pc lcd. (achew, what u think? u using a mac tongue.gif)

the DRO, usually works better in the daylight, because the sun and shed have huge diff in highlights and shadows. so that is where DRO5 kicks in best. but while indoor, DRO dont do well, because of the minor difference in highlight (shadow all stay darks)... DRO5 will make the shadow area look wierd. so low DRO is recommended at lowlight shooting, so there is no one DRO for all, it's like u have to set it everytime u shoot on diff light situation smile.gif (ohhh that why they include AUTO... hahah use it! the same reason DRO1 kicks in for night shot... daytime bigger DRO will kick in, dunno true or not, that is my experince from using A550, maybe sifu albnok going to shoot me for misguiding ppl again.. hahaha)

have u tested the HDR? damn SUIIII i tell u. for night, use around 1ev,.... daytime/light, use 3EV to get the max output.

Added on November 6, 2009, 11:50 pmi DIY my strap...how? RM15 + few riggit will do. RM15 for a guitar strap. few riggit for the keyring and hookclips. walaaa... comfortable long strap...

loud? i think is fast, not loud? i love the sound, to me is softer then my A300 which sound like a whole spring is trying to attack the mirror. lol

oh i recall what i wan to ask u to do,....
shoot one DRO off, one DRO auto, one DRO 1 /3/ 5 then compare side by side, daylight and shade, and indoor. u'll get the general idea which DRO to shoot at ur preferences.

*edit: i didnt use padding, the strap is long and big, A300 is not that heavy and the weight is divided anyway biggrin.gif summore my strap soooooo colorful, everyone always look at me when i walk around... lol... i might wan to find those 'scout' pin to pin the strap.. and maybe blink blink my camera (gf's idea).... like stealth... LOL,... so next time ppl wont dare to ask, what camera model u using? ( i'll gonna BLINK them blind)

john, nice toys! and niceee color!! 50 F1.8?? nice bokeh too.... catching up really fast biggrin.gif

porkchop: well, if u know my story, i just brought A300!... okay joking,... i am unlucky that i brought a bad calibrated body. send to sony twice, they never did any calibration. so i took the case onto my own hand, open it up and calibrate myself(friends from miri, if u wan me to check ur calibration, come nudge me) now my camera got calibrated properly, now it focused really sharp, really really really SHARP, that it's like a new camera, and so it's like a new limit to be break or discover.... so it kinda kept me busy and anti poison is good. tongue.gif

but i did went to my local sonystore to molest the A550 kaokao... hahaha, but molest until forgot to take photo of it... hahaha, but still, A300 is just nice...

(food for thought: i walk around the street of photographer, infact, most of them are semi pros, they shot marvelous photoes... then i wonder, what body they are using. they are using 20D, 30D, 350D, D70, D40x, D200, all of them are older body and has terrible iso passing 400, but how did they creates the master piece?)

albnok and tanjq87, thanks for the teaching and now its time for me to find the remote!! anyone selling??, I only got the A550 for one day and somehow too many new functions from my A350...need abit more getting used to
and YES I forgot I had the High ISO NOISE REDUCTION turned on, so for all of you all this might not be a fair example but it could be the "worst case" example of how bad you pics can look in high iso (can rite?)
*
erm... the noise reduction algorithm is better then any existing alpha. use it! hahaha, u cant say its fair or not, because, every camera on the market, they use noise reduction also anyway... so let the noise reduction kick in and do his job smile.gif wont it be nice to know that the high noise reduction did such a great job in cleaning the 3200/6400/12k iso? biggrin.gif

A300 is Off, DRO, DRO+

rumor is rumor, wait till the official announcement. biggrin.gif

JAG: welcome to alpha community. i cant help much, but as far as i know, 28-75 definately cant compare to CZ lenses. but it is a decent for fullframe i guess, you'll get what u pay. sigma and tamron in other hand, i never seen the sal2875, but i suspect that it is a copy of tamron 2875, need albnok to verify. smile.gif

is it normal for a300 to take 3-5 seconds to process the image after i snap? and does the macro filter actually useful for macro shot?

Thanks!
*
i think u shot at iso above iso800 and activated the NR on high iso, thus it delays about 1-2 maybe 3 second on saving.

marco filter, not really, marco adapter like raynox, great. but best and superior still the whole lens itself.

Poadster: 50mm F1.8 is contrastier wide open, focuses to 34cm instead of just 45cm close, has cleaner bokeh, but SAM is not nice for A700 because AF/MF button is made useless.

achew: Nice warm feel for the reprocessed shot!

However your bokeh rain shot er... the bokeh is sharp and prickly while she is soft and portraity.

hokc77: I love how your shots are getting more classy!

porkchop: No shit, there was another guy using a 135mm? yawn.gif
